Cassidy Reveals First Look At Remade Forward Lines

All eyes were on the forward groups as each of the three “teams” took the ice on the first day of Training Camp. Around 9:00 am when the first team kicked off the day, Jack Eichel was matched with Ivan Barbashev and Victor Olofsson. A few hours later, William Karlsson skated next to Mark Stone and Pavel Dorofeyev. Then, in the final session, Tomas Hertl was flanked by Alex Holtz and Nic Roy, while Brett Howden centered the final line with Keegan Kolesar and Tanner Pearson.

After months of contemplation, and admittedly “a lot” of playing around with line combinations over the summer, Bruce Cassidy revealed his first choice solution to what will likely be a season-long puzzle.

Barbashev-Eichel-Olofsson
Dorofeyev-Karlsson-Stone
Holtz-Hertl-Roy
Pearson-Howden-Kolesar

He explained the thought process allowed him to arrive at this mix.

Jack and Barbashev have played well together, so ok who is the piece that might be best suited for them. Olofsson, he’s played with Jack, so let’s see how that looks. Karlsson has played with Dorofeyev, so now we’re looking at Stone over there because he lost his centerman that he’s played with a lot. Tomas, we don’t know. Where does Holtz play, right or left, he’s played both. And then Pearson’s in, we gotta take a look and see. He hasn’t played a lot of hockey the last little bit, so we’re not sure if he’s a complementary guy. -Bruce Cassidy

McCrimmon Shares Insight On Variety Of Topics As Training Camp Opens

The Golden Knights are officially back on the ice! 137 days after their season came to an abrupt end in Dallas, Vegas is ready to make amends in Season 8.

General Manager Kelly McCrimmon spoke to the media before camp and touched on a number of topics including Robin Lehner, the team’s health, opportunities for younger players, preseason plans, and much more.

On team’s health entering 2024-25 season

Main camp will begin today with 63 players in three teams, it’s a similar format as we’ve used in the past. From a health standpoint, we’ve used our offseason to rest and recover. We’ll have all veteran players healthy and participating in camp. We have a couple of players that were involved in rookie camp or even prior to rookie camp that are nursing some injuries that won’t be part of camp but the veteran players will all be here. -McCrimmon

On expectations going into the season

We have very high hopes. Training camp is a little different this year in that there’s going to be a little more competition for jobs. Last year we were the Stanley Cup champions returning our entire team. This year is a little different which brings extra importance to camp and extra importance to preseason. And there’s an excitement that goes with the evaluation process in determining what the opening lineup will be on October 9th. -McCrimmon

On Robin Lehner

Robin will not be reporting to the club this year. He continues to be unfit to play. There are unique circumstances surrounding this situation that the NHL, NHLPA, and our club are currently working through. Collectively we are assessing our next steps and when we have more to say we will. There will be nothing further until then. -McCrimmon

On where the team has improved since last year

I sure hope the answer to that question is better health. That’s really the main thing for me. Everyone knows that guys aren’t playing and everyone says ‘jeez they had a lot of injuries’ but I don’t know that you can ever properly equate it to what the team maybe looks like on the ice or what it could look like. So my hope is good health. If we have good health, I like the makeup of our team. -McCrimmon

Who Are The Kings Forwards?

The Los Angeles Kings are not built like the Vegas Golden Knights when it comes to forwards. Vegas has a top six that generate much of the offense for the team and they rely on the bottom six to keep the pace of the game high, create chances, and wear down opponents. The Golden Knights are at their best when all 12 forwards are active in the game, allowing them to come in waves at the opposing team.

The Kings are much different. Instead, the Kings have three elite players that carry a majority of the load, they have a little group of offensive-minded players that chip in by essentially complimenting the stars, and they fill the rest of their roster with role players. Some are defensive-oriented, others are there to win face-offs, then there are the grit and toughness guys, but all are mainly specialists.

So, I sat down with friend of the site and host of the official podcast of the LA Kings,  All The Kings Men, Jesse Cohen, to figure out, who exactly are these guys and what do they do best?

Anze Kopitar – Hart-trophy winning defensive forward who just flat out does everything well.

Jeff Carter – playmaker that is dangerous every second he’s in the game. He scores, he creates chances for others, he’s an elite skater, he wins face-offs, he’s simply an offensive weapon.

Dustin Brown – Having a tremendous offensive year and tends to be a player that imposes his will all over the ice while having the skill set to finish chances when they arise.

Adrian Kempe – Has a dangerous wrist shot from 30 feet out but seems to rely on it heavily. When his game is activated and he’s in on the forecheck he’s a disruptive and dangerous offensive weapon. When it’s not he has a tendency to disappear and rely on his skating and shooting. High ceiling, middle output.

Tobias Reider – Speed to burn with offensive upside that has still yet to fully develop. Can move the puck and his feet quickly.

Trevor Lewis – Defensive specialist having a career year offensively. Penalty killer that can play center or wing but it mostly deployed at wing.
