As the Golden Knights head towards the most important part of the season, they’ve been doing a lot of winning. 17 wins in the last 22 games has to have the team feeling great about the state of their game, but the head coach still strives for more.
We can tidy up a lot of different things like getting more consistent, getting out of ruts quicker, just getting closer to a 60 minute effort but there’s no one part that’s horrible. All parts of our game can all be solid they just aren’t always solid all at the same time and that’s what we are trying to get to. -Bruce Cassidy
They’ve been outshot in 11 of the last 14 games, have allowed more expected goals than they’ve generated in 14 of the last 17 (including six straight), and are seeing 43% of their in-zone faceoffs in the defensive zone.
It hasn’t always been pretty but the results have been there throughout.
We’re not where we want to be exactly but we find ways to win and I love that about our group. It’s not like if the power play doesn’t score we can’t win or if we give up too many penalties we can’t win or if we don’t get great goaltending. Whatever is needed that night we seem to find a way to get to the finish line. -Cassidy
It’s often said that a mark of a good team is whether or not they can win when they don’t have their best game. The Golden Knights have been elite in that category because, as coach said, different areas of the game can pick up the slack.
That being said, the Golden Knights haven’t been inconsistent in all areas. When asked about the areas in which Vegas has excelled most this season, Cassidy highlighted three.
I think our slot coverage is very good. We rarely break down there over and over. Our reloads have been really good this second half of the season. Our forwards’ determination to get back into the play has been excellent as well. And our rush game has been good all year, we can really score off the rush. -Cassidy
With the playoffs looming, the Golden Knights will need to continue to be excellent in those areas while also adding to the parts of the game that have slacked at different points. All the pieces are there, it’s just going to be about bringing them all together for long enough to get the job done 16 times when it really counts.

The VGK postseason hopes completely depend on one of their 428 goalies getting hot (assuming Cassidy plays the correct goalie) and providing enough to get them through.
I am a completely neutral observer. I don’t care if they win or lose. I just find the situation they are in to be completely fascinating (as well as unprecedented). They are a fairly decent, but not great team in a very weak division. Very inconsistent, but generally decent. Ok so far so good and not that interesting, but their goalie situation is what throws them over the top.
In the playoffs goalies can be huge, literally winning a series on their own. They can also be relatively insignificant. Yet good teams can win with just ok goalie play.
The Knights have a little bit of everything. Their skaters are extremely inconsistent. They can beat anyone only getting decent (but not great) goalie play. They can also lose to anyone even getting great goalie play. That is just the skaters.
Now throw in the fact that they have a bunch of unknown goalies whose individual play has ranged from meh to pretty good.
Overall it leads to lots of unknowns. VKG can lose in the first round going out feebly due to both poor goalie play as well as inconsistent skater performance. They can also go to the finals based off of great goalie play and timely and dominant skater performance.
Anything in between is a possibility.

I don’t think goalies will have any thing to do with winning or losing in the playoff just as they really haven’t all season, minus a game here or there or a great period here or there. The defensive system in front of the goalie has proven to make all 5 goalies playable. To your point though, if 1 or all goalies can stand on their head and keep VGK in it when they really can’t score then I would say yes it depends on the goalie. To me they need to shore up issues like lapses in defense, because that is their bread and butter. Cassidy’s system. Lock down defense can/will lead to their scoring chances, but make no mistake scoring is going to be their weakness in the playoffs. I don’t see that any different than with PDB the last few years. More physical, tighter locked down teams is what they will get. How they score thru that is going to be the great decider. Scoring with this team is surprisingly good at times, but surprisingly bad as well. This team doesn’t pass well and that is especially true during the PP. Their ability to get to the net and park has improved 10 fold from last season. That is one hope I have that they will be able to score more dirty stuff in the playoffs than the PDB years. That in zone passing though, ugh!
Hey I am just happy they are where they are. Seriously, I didn’t have high hopes this year and they absolutely proved me wrong and Cassidy gets alot of the credit and kept this team together thru alot of injuries etc. First round exit, second round exit, win it all, I am just glad they are going to provide the opportunity for me to have some butterflies in the gut watching them try.
