What Bruce Cassidy And John Hynes See As Their Opponent’s Biggest Strength In First Round Series

On a nightly basis in the NHL, most teams and coaches are uber-focused on playing the best style for themselves and almost ignoring the opponent. In the playoffs, teams still want to be true to what they do best, but the concentration level of what makes the other team good is brought much more to the forefront.

With puck drop a little more than a day away, the Golden Knights and the Wild have been preparing for each other. The coaches recently shared where they feel their opponent in this series thrives.

First, the Wild’s concerns about the Golden Knights.

They’re a pretty strong defensive structured team and they have one of the bigger D corps in the league. When you look at their defensive numbers they’re a team that is responsible with the puck. -John Hynes, MIN head coach

Not only are the Golden Knights ranked in the top five in goals against, but they are well regarded as one of the most difficult teams to generate offense against. Vegas’ zone defense keeps teams away from the “house,” the easiest place in the rink to score goals.

To be able to get to the inside is where you have to score this time of year. We’ve got to skate and we’ve got to play fast in the O-Zone. It starts with a shot mentality and strong puck retrievals. You have to play direct, you have to deliver pucks to the net, you’ve got to have shots, shot attempts, rebounds, check it off of sprays. Now they have to get out of some structure, and then you have to attack quick. -Hynes

The Wild are one of the lower shot volume teams in the NHL, especially among playoff teams. However, they’ve upped their numbers recently as they’ve been fighting for their playoff lives the last few weeks. Hynes believes the way to get to the front of the goal against Vegas is by shooting the puck there rather than passing it. This is not a tactic they succeeded at in the regular season against VGK. In three games, the Wild generated just 20.7 shots on goal per game and 45.3 shot attempts. Hynes believes these numbers must be significantly higher if they are going to score goals in this series.

Finally, Hynes sees the key to his team slowing the Golden Knights down as limiting forecheck and offensive zone time.

From an offensive perspective, they have high-end talent. They can hit you in multiple ways. They can do some things off the rush but I think their forecheck and offensive zone presence is something that’s effective as well. They’re just a good strong well-balanced team. When you look at their lineup they play a good strong game. Collectively as a team they play the game that most nights is required to win. -Hynes

This will likely mean a stacked-up neutral zone defense from the Wild that will force the Golden Knights to throw pucks in deep and fight to retrieve them. This is unlikely to be a high-scoring series, so discipline and patience in puck management at the offensive blue line will be key against a Wild team attempting to play low-event, boring hockey.

Bruce Cassidy’s first thought about the Wild’s primary asset is similar.

Team defense. I think they are good at keeping the puck out of their net. That’s usually a product of not allowing the rush game to get going. They are very good at suppressing rush chances and not giving you odd-man rushes and easy opportunities. You’re going to have to get inside, you’re going to have to work to create your offense through O-Zone play. Get on the power play, that’s an advantage (for us). They’ve given up some goals on the PK. -Bruce Cassidy

Cassidy will likely preach to his team the need to work for offensive zone time rather than trying to force it. He often uses the phrase “take the ice that is there,” meaning when teams have good gaps at the blue line, the open ice is behind them and the puck must be dumped in, while it’s only when the opponent sags into the zone that controlled entries are available.

Forecheck will be important. O-Zone puck recoveries will be important. When we do get time and space in their zone we need to make sure our spacing is good. And if it opens up then convert on the rush. -Cassidy

There seems to be a confidence from Cassidy, and a concern from Hynes, that if Vegas can indeed establish the cycle game, good things will happen. The Wild are likely going to wait for the Golden Knights to make mistakes in order to bring the puck the other way rather than trying to force the issue as we’ve seen from a team like Dallas.

Offensively, Cassidy’s eyes are set to the same area of the ice as they always are, directly in front of Adin Hill.

They’ve got a good low-to-high game. Their D are mobile and get their shots through so they are good at rebounds and deflections in the O-Zone. Because they’re not a high-risk team, they tend not to have a rush game themselves. That’s the part of their game that tends to be a little more “half-court”-ish. -Cassidy

In other words, for the Wild to get odd-man rushes or much of anything in transition, it’ll have to come from Vegas mistakes. Take care of the puck, and Minnesota won’t threaten aside from somewhat of a spray-and-pray technique.

All in all, both coaches are expecting low-scoring, low-event hockey where the puck stays away from the center of the ice for the majority of the game. The team that sticks to it longest is likely to come out on top. Typically, that’s been the Golden Knights, and there’s no reason to expect anything different this time around.

This highlights the importance of finishing 1st in the Division – home ice advantage against a wild card team. An almost free pass to the 2nd round.

    • Rashaad

sb, I think they will win but calling it almost a free pass to the 2nd round is very disrespectful to Minnesota. This is not San Jose or Anaheim. Minnesota has qualified for the playoffs being in the top half of the best hockey league in the world while being without some of their best players for long periods of time.

I learned thst the Wild do very well on the road..Their away record is enviable. Let’s hope we change the Wild trend and dominate on home ice.

Interesting how weighted the Hertl line is to goals vs. assists. Sort of like relying somewhat more on the D’s to set them up than each other. Three shoot first players that works so far.

    Saad: 6G/8A
    Hertl: 32G/29A
    Dorofeyev: 35G/17A

We can see this holds true their careers though Dorofeyev is a smaller sample. Hertl is a bit more assists-weighted but even his points are .46 goals which is high.

    Saad: 266G/263A (.50 goals)
    Hertl: 252G/297A (.46 goals)
    Dorofeyev: 55G/30A (.65 goals)

    • Pistol Pete

Should have included their career goals per 82 games. While at it here again are for all the forwards. Olofsson may be a bit of an eye opener. Worth noting Howden’s average belies his big uptick this season and again the Dorofeyev sample is small. Roy’s is higher than I might have thought. And look at Pearson that old veteran (my presumed scratch)!

      Barbashev: 18
      Eichel: 32
      Stone: 27

      Saad: 23
      Hertl: 26
      Dorofeyev: 30

      Olofsson: 23
      Karlsson: 20
      Smith: 20

      Howden: 12
      Roy: 15
      Kolesar: 9

      Pearson: 17

  14. Pistol Pete

My thread today began with the McCrimmon presser well with the listen imo and the revelation the Hertl line is more than 50% goals. A novel observation imo and one that will be appreciated by sincere VGK fans here including Ken though I dare say he may not even read his own board due to the ridiculous off-topic and derogatory stuff PO posted ad nauseum including more of an effort to ridicule the fans than contribute to the VGK discussion. No biggie that is for sure. Let the playoffs proceed!

    • Rashaad

The way I look at it is the more Pistol Pete posts the better because the team is going good. If we here from Deez Nutz who only posts when they lose then the team is in trouble.

      • Pistol Pete

Thank you Rashaad. Pistol Pete does acknowledge a tendency to repeat points previously made, however it can be human nature to “toot one’s horn” especially when it comes to points the thinker has made he/she consider novel and thus worth repeating. In fact some readers don’t spend a lot of time here and may have missed the previous go arounds. The career goals per 82 games is a case in point. Pistol Pete does not want to boast and claim he originated the method but it is the only way to reconcile games missed to injury with a fair per season performance. We all know a 20 goal season is a benchmark. Besides this and again not bragging but Pistol Pete is not aware of anyone else introducing this method at least not here at SinBin including Ken himself.

In fact when posting above Pistol Pete even acknowledged he has posted the goals per 82 game stats previously.

“While at it here AGAIN are for all the forwards. “
Clearly sitting here ready to begin the playoffs is an appropriate time to revisit the matter, in fact 66.67% of our forwards are 20 goal scorers. Pistol Pete will try and remember to compare the rosters for the upcoming opponents and report back.

Also: the notion career stats are “in the past” and have no bearing on the future is, well, never mind…

        • TS

HUH?? OK, so now I’m confused

  16. Pistol Pete

Applying my career goals per 82 games method MIN has 5 out of 12 forwards with 20 goals or higher compared to our 8 of 12. Kaprizov is a sky high 48 however, much higher than #9 and #16. If I remember correctly Cassidy had something to say about Kaprizov yesterday.

I must say EDM is loaded with 20 goal scorers. 9 of 12 with a number in the high 20’s plus of course the big two. Worry about them in round two maybe.

      • Klayton Dodds

I’m going with LA in 6, but if it follows the last 3 years’ trend it’ll be a Edmonton sweep so what do I know. I truly think we’d be better off playing EDM if (and when) we get through MIN In five. Watching the playoffs preview the other day on the NHL channel really surprised me that the past two playoffs were so high in away victories. I think ’23 even tied the record.

  17. NAM

I really like the lines this team has built. 3 out of the 4 lines are *very* good defensively and the 1 has become passible to even good with *great* offensive upside. Ever line can score too. I think with the details being worked on for months now, playing to the system regardless of line is the key. Marchessault said in an interview a couple of days ago that Cassidy is the best coach he has ever had and praised him for adjusting to the game with an unbelievable hockey mind. I feel like the players are in place to run the game Bruce wants to run and change up if Bruce needs to change it up. Sprinkle in some health and some luck, I like our chances. We will lose some games, but this team is built to win series.

    • I truly believe we have an excellent chance of a deep run in these playoffs, even as a first place team flying under the radar in the eyes of many.

My 2 concerns are will we score enough as the games get tighter and tighter, Im still of the belief Howden should be on the line with Karlsson and Smith with Olaffson being the odd man out and Pearson being on the 4th line.

My other concern is can the Power Play be once again rekindled with all the pieces back in place, again I think Hanifin should be on the first unit as he has more of a shot mentality than Theo has, while Theo brings a different element due to his shiftiness, his prone to fumbles at the blue line sucks momentum at the worst possible moments.

      GO KNIGHTS GO!!
