Recap: The Golden Knights hosted the Washington Capitals for a Sunday evening home game. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring with his 864th career goal. Midway into the period the Capitals doubled their lead to 2-0. Vegas’ Brett Howden cut Washington’s lead in half before the break.
Quickly into the middle frame, the Capitals regained their two goal advantage. Five minutes later Keegan Kolesar got Vegas within one. However, Ovechkin scored his second of the game to give his club a 4-2 advantage after two periods.
Vegas had several chances in the final frame but former Golden Knight goaltender Logan Thompson got it the way. Ovechkin added an empty netter to complete the hat trick and help the Caps seal a 5-2 win.
The Golden Knights record drops to 11-5-2 falling to the Capitals 5-2. Vegas will hit the road for a five-game road trip beginning in Toronto on Wednesday. Puck drop against the Maple Leafs is scheduled for 4:30 PM. (Recap by Jason)
Analysis: Slow start again for VGK as they fell in a two-goal hole. They got a late one in the 1st and then played a solid 2nd but Logan Thompson was strong all night. Vegas peppered the net with shots but aside from the second goal, they really didn’t generate enough in second chance opportunities. Two games against their former goalie, two losses. VGK doubling down on Beer Leaguers Hertl and Hill doomed this team.
Hertl can play at a C3 level on 5v5. There was a nice article showing how useless Herlt is 5v5 and how if you’ll take out two of his best games, his contributions are mediocre for the salary he makes.
Meanwhile Adin Hill can’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag.
Glad to see Ovechkin ripped a new one on home soil to VGK again. He is clutch at the Fortress
I think this team could have been great but the Hertl and Mantha trades were such a terrible move.
McManagers got lucky in the expansion draft and now think their farts are golden.
Glad we won that cup while I was at TMobile but I don’t think we will be anywhere close to a cup run with all these bums.

They refused to shoot the puck…put pucks in the direction of the net too many times during the first 2 periods….’settling’ for a pass….a ‘perfect’ pass….Eichel was a prime contributor to that tonight as it led directly to Ovechkins snipe from 10 feet away….of course he was not the only one turning the puck over as plenty of his teammates were guilty of the same…regardless of #8 hat trick the game was probably decided on his amazing defensive play against Barbashev…if not for that its a brand new game tied at 3…sadly it was not the case!

In the Pacific Division there are 8 teams, 6 of those teams are within 5 points of 1st place. The battle for a playoff position looks to be a tough one.
-To say that Mark Stone, the Captain isn’t the stick that stirs the drink is an understatement. The top line looks mediocre without the Captain on that line with Eichel. Whenever Eichel has the puck he creates opportunities, but there’s no one skilled enough to play with him out there. This is one of the major reasons why the Golden Knights are slow to start and in a panic to finish.
-Dorofeyev is doing okay. He has 12 points in 18 games, not close enough to be considered for a top line winger role. Both Dorofeyev and Cotter had 12 points each going into tonight’s games.

My dog of the game is Ivan Barbashev who blew a pass in front of a wide open net. Thompson wasn’t even in the crease. A complete flub on a sure goal. Score that one and maybe this game heads in a different direction.
I think Thompson has proven who is the better goal tender.

I think we can honestly all agree that the McManagers have mishandled the goal tender position since Fleury. Be glad we won the cup 2 years ago, I don’t see us getting close to another one unless this team finds its identity.

LT had already proven he was the better of the two before he left. FO refused to admit they made another mistake – slow learners after the elite (what a joke that was) Lehner fiasco – That said Vegas played a lot of the game this evening like they had lead feet and helped the Caps do the scoring. The next road trip will determine what this club is made of – they need to take their “A” game up a notch or two or the result this evening will be duplicated over and over. It’s one thing to lose when they give it their best – but not so, if that is not the case.

Thank you, I stopped posting in here a few years ago due to all the haters and the politics. Your comments on the mismanagement of the goalie position by our management are 100% correct. The entire fleury – Lehner mess didn’t teach them anything. They were dazzled by an incredible once in a lifetime short term run in the playoffs by what was then our 2nd backup goalie. So they stuck us with another overpriced 5 million dollar contract. Before you all come back at me with your hatred. Put the lifetime records of Hill and Thompson side by side and decide who is the better goalie.
I am not criticizing management over their handling of skater contracts and trades, I disagree with a few of them but overall they have made a lot of good choices Other than taking Fleury in the entry draft their major goalie decisions have been terrible.

Hill came in and won a Cup when Brossoit went down. That is impressive. Basically nullifies the Lehner misfire. LT wanted to be traded and they honored the request. Unfortunate in retrospect thus far.

Hill came in when the team was ultra healthy and playing at an elite defensive level. LB was amazing too before he got hurt. Hill was the lone survivor at the right time and he did well, obviously. But if that team was playing like this team he would look like he does now.

The VGK’s puck management had put them in a hole once again, but this time, they couldn’t climb out of it. They better take the next couple of days and work on skills. they need Stone and Olofsson back in the lineup, and they also need a trade for another winger like maybe JJ Peterka from Buffalo. Their forward depth right now is abysmal. using dmen on the wing.
and they need to use Schmid more. he was good for the Devils 2 years ago when they had a weak defense, and he was fine in the only Vgk action he has seen so far. He has the ideal size and walrus style that the Vgk system seems to mesh with.
one of the best goalies in their entire system is Lindbom, who is small but good. he still needs lots more minor league experience.
