Recap: The Golden Knights were looking to wrap up their quarterfinal series against the Winnipeg Jets with a Game 5 victory at home. Vegas immediately attacked Winnipeg’s zone and scored :50 into the game. Chandler Stephenson tapped in his third goal of the series off a great feed from linemate Mark Stone. After the opening 20 minutes the home team led 1-0.
Vegas’ offense heated up in the middle frame, receiving three goals in the first eight minutes of the period. Stone doubled the score :42 seconds in, William Karlsson scored his fourth goal of the series, followed by a second goal from Stephenson. The Golden Knights took a commanding 4-0 lead into the second intermission.
In the final period the Golden Knights protected their four-goal lead and continued to frustrate the Jets offense. Winnipeg broke the shutout, but Vegas killed the clock and sealed the series with a 4-1 victory.
The Golden Knights clinched their first-round series with a 4-1 victory over the Jets. Vegas will now rest and prepare for the winner of the Edmonton-Los Angeles series. (Recap by Jason)
Analysis: Vegas has been in the situation of being up 3-1 in a series many times before. They haven’t had a ton of success in it. It seemed like they were aware of that history tonight and were willing to do whatever they needed to in order to avoid the slippery slope that comes with losing this game. They came out on fire with the forecheck completely eating the Jets alive from the very first shift of the game. It was only 1-0 after one period but the dominance of the 1st was just foreshadowing for what was to come. VGK’s best 30 minutes of the series saw them officially ground the Jets (or cut them in half, as I prefer). (Analysis by Ken)

I think Bowness knows he is probably gone, and just let it all hang out. He played the VGK 8 times this year, and is 1-7. Pretty clear who the better team is, regardless of effort.

yes John W. not only that but the SN crew after the game ( one of best in business, ESPN is crap) suggested that with so many big name players on JETS roster reaching UFA status next year it is likely that JETS will lose these players and enter a period of re building. They lamented that fact that part of this due to “Canadian teams being unable to sign top notch free agents”. Alluding to the FACT that CANADA is scumbab high tax socialist state in which small market teams like the Oilers, the Jets, and the Canucks can not compete in Bettman’s NHL. THEY SAID IT , right there on the air. For all to hear. The implication is clear. If you have a problem with that, then bring it up with Elliot F. Kelly Hrudy, and other two SN commenters.
You can tell by the body language of Bowness after the game that he was deeply, deeply disappointed and truly sad. He is friends with VGK coach John Stevens. Maybe the both of them will work together again some time in the future ?

it was the ZOMBIE GAME, both teams had key players out; yet the depth of VGK was better. Pachal, Carrier, and even EF HUTTON stepped up to the plate.

We may or may not continue to win but make no mistake we have the best defense in the NHL. McNabb, Petro, Martinez, Theadore, Hague, and Whitecloud there is no other team that comes close. Not to many teams can roll out 4 lines of quality players so we may not win it all but I’ll guarantee you one thing all opponents will be worried about us more then I’m worried about them. Home ice throughout so lets take advantage of that.

If EDM, the way you stop that top line is to take the body every time and as early as possible. The Defense has to stay well in front of that line and not allow them to get even close to parallel or they are going to skate circles around them. That means the Forwards are going to have to be very quick to clog up the neutral zone and take away any neutral zone cross ice passing. VGK is going to have to get sustained offensive zone presence against EDM.
Once they are in place defensively in their own zone they have to keep the potential shooters well outside and take away the gaps.
On the power play, the VGK passes the puck a lot, but they rarely use their feet to open up potential lanes. That’s got to change.
On the PK? Just don’t commit penalties because the result will almost always result in an Edmonton Goal.

can’t do that on PP, it puts the rest of team on four on three situation on the PK not a good set up. Plus on home ice, the home team gets final match up and often times
their top line is out there against a line that doesn’t have the ability to “take the body every time”. Especially if you have players like Smith, Stone, no. 20, no 22, no 81, no. 27 matched up who are not great body checkers.
