Praise Be To Foley, Vegas Golden Knights Hockey Website

Recap: The Golden Knights hosted Pacific rival Vancouver Canucks for a late season divisional meeting. It didn’t take long for Vegas to generate their offense. Deadline acquisition Anthony Mantha gave VGK a 1-0 lead 1:37 into the game. Jonathan Marchessault added his team-leading 41st goal of the season five minutes later. Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin wrapped up the 1st period scoring for Vegas, as they carried a 4-1 advantage into the first intermission.

Again, Vegas scored in the opening two minutes into the period. Vancouver recorded their second goal of the game but trailed Vegas 5-2 after 40 minutes of action.

Vancouver cut Vegas’ lead to 5-3 early in the final frame. Brett Howden tapped in a one time pass from Keegan Kolesar moments later to regain VGK’s three goal advantage. The reigning champions finished off the Canucks for their sixth win in the past seven games.

The Golden Knights record improves to 42-25-8 defeating the Canucks 6-3. Vegas will take a short flight to Arizona for a Friday night matchup against the Coyotes. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: The Golden Knights used a dominant 1st period to jump all over a Canuck team that did not look ready for them. From there, they were able to hold strong enough and respond every time the Canucks generated anything. This version of the Golden Knights is finally starting to look like the one that one that Cup last year. (Analysis by Ken)

Jack Eichel Is Playing Far More Than William Karlsson, That Must Change

Latest Round Of Power Rankings Ignoring VGK’s Past Success

  1. Pistol Pete

    Last dozen = 9-2-1
    3-4 = clinch
4-3 = 100 pts (would be third time in five non-COVID-shortened seasons)

I have absolutely no idea why the statistician did not award Dorofeyev an assist on the Mancha goal. After the goalie stopped his breakaway he clearly shoves the puck back out to Mantha. Other time he got stiffed was early in the season against LA when his pass from behind the net did not get the assist it clearly earned. Anyways the importance of the win takes precedence over any matter of whether assists earned are rewarded. Team effort is all that counts!

    • Pistol Pete

Karlsson should have gotten an assist as well for it was his pass that set up Dorofeyev’s breakaway.

      • Pistol Pete

As a matter of fact it appeared DeSmith trying to clear the puck from Dorofeyev was the one to direct the puck to Mantha. Still though, Karlsson and Dorofeyev set the goal up. Guess because the goalie was the last to direct the puck, it negated the actions of Dorofeyev and Karlsson and it became an unassisted goal on paper. Oh well.

        • Pistol Pete

So when the goaltender touched it became change of possession negating the actions of Karlsson and Dorofeyev. Learn something every day! That could have explained Dorofeyev not getting an assist in the Kings game last fall. He passed the puck and it made it to the front of the net for the goal but went through the possession of the goalie in getting there.

        • Who cares – they won and everyone contributed. Why bother to pick fly shit out of pepper. I know you’re an avid supporter of Dorofeyev but leave this to his agent to shove down everyone’s throat.

    Game 75 Analysis VGK 6 VAN 3

    VGK records now stands at 42-25-8, 92pts .613, +25 GF/GA

What wasn’t there to like about this game other than the double minor to Theodore? Eichel also put in 4 more minutes TOI than any of the other forwards (>21). The VGK dominated the first 20 minutes of this game. The 2nd period was fairly evenly played. In the 3rd period Vancouver made a push but the VGK defense and goaltending was very solid. I liked the VGK response to every VAN goal. Great energy, physical and getting to the net. Was it a complete 60 minutes? Pretty close. One stat that jumped out was that Petro/Martinez were -2 this game. Hanifan and Hague look fantastic as a team.

1st Star – Jonathan Marchessault with 3 pts
    2nd Star – Anthony Mantha 2 pts
    3rd Star – Jack Eichel 2 pts
4th Star – Noah Hanifan with 24 minutes of ice time, and a PPG

There are 7 games left in the season. The VGK must go 3-4 in order to reach 98 points. The lead over the Blues and the Wild is pretty much insurmountable. The only chance they have to reach the postseason now is to overtake the Kings who have a 3 point lead over the Blues and a 6 point lead over the Wild. The Knights likely have locked in their playoff spot. Edmonton has 95 points with two games in hand and are just 5 points behind Vancouver for 1st place in the Division. This is the time of the season when teams need to amp up, and that is exactly what the Golden Knights have done.

Next up is a road game in Arizona on Friday (7pm) against the Coyote 31-38-5 67pts, .453 -22 GF/GA.

The VGK could be fighting for 2nd place, or solidify its spot as 3rd in the Pacific. Overtaking the Canucks is currently a pipe dream, but still not mathematically out of the question. The VGK has to win out to reach 104. 99 or even 100 points looks like a more realistic finish.

R-R looks like Hertl plays in Arizona. Saw him practice today. He can really skate!

      • Pistol Pete

Also R-R now two pts ahead of the Preds who were previously ahead of us as the #1 WC.

  3. Pistol Pete

At their best this team is hard for ANY team to play against. That is their identity. Roll four lines. Three equal D pairs. Five man defense. Hertl will fit in very well. He likes to defend. Saw him practice today. Excellent skater.

    • Pistol Pete

With Hanifin the D corp is all the more solid and offensively dynamic. They can retire Martinez and replace him with either Whitecloud or Korczak. Hague looks good with Hanifin. Are we looking towards a postseason where Whitecloud remains scratched? Unbelievable.

      • NAM

Whitecloud and Korczak are RIGHT dmen and Martinez is a LEFT dman. Not a replacement. Hutton is, or could be anyway, a replacement. Whitecloud scratched is not unbelievable. If Hague wouldn’t have found chemistry with Hanifin, playing his opposite side (I guess he played opposite side in junior) he would be the other scratch, because Hutton was playing really well in place of Petra. Next year will be a new ball game. I bet Vegas moves Whitecloud or maybe even Theo over summer. Depends on the playoffs I guess. Someone has to go as the room is crowded and cap space is critical (next year).

        • Pistol Pete

You’re right about the how the D men are handed I tend to overlook that. What I meant about it being unbelievable Whitecloud is scratched is it shows the depth they have at D where they can scratch a SC winner. I see Petro and Whitecloud are the only two right shot. With Whitecloud out two of the pairs are both left shot. Korczak you say is a right so he would be a replacement for Whitecloud. I could see them trading him with Korczak as his replacement. Though not as heavy he’s a better skater with possibly a higher offensive ceiling and close to $2m cheaper.

          • NAM

Yeah up till this year I never thought about right or left D. Cassidy is such a teacher of the game in his interviews. At one point he was talking about the advantage of having the correct handed dmen. Not that I remember what he said, but he made me more aware that there is right vs left and how it affects who he plays for injured players or why he has to change the lineups if someone gets injured and the guy coming in isn’t a direct replacement.

  4. Rashaad

    • Pistol Pete

Rashaad I would expect to see Hertl at C. He can play wing but has been mainly C for a number of seasons and consider next season Stephenson is likely gone so C depth will be Eichel/Hertl/Karlsson/Roy (excellent).

      With Stone:

For 2024-25 I am not expecting to see Martinez, Stephenson, Carrier and Amadio. Not enough cap space after signing Hanifin, Marchessault, Dorofeyev and carrying Hertl’s $6.75m.

      • Pistol Pete

Howden appears to be an viable replacement for Carrier on Cassidy’s all important 4th line. This should carry through to next season. Stephenson and Amadio gone will require Cotter or Brisson taking a full-time spot on the 2024-25 third line with Denisenko as a wild card. I think the 2024-25 second line might be Dorofeyev-Hertl-Stone. I remain bullish on Dorofeyev. He’s going to keep getting stronger and more impactful. High hockey IQ.

        • TS

How is it that we would keep Cotter, a mistake- prone player, yet trade Stephenson, our workhorse? Yeah, money talks. But I believe Chandler stays.

          • NAM

Nobody would trade Stephenson. He is UFA that is going to cost Vegas an *additional* amount of *millions* next year. You have Hertl now at 6.7 mil and Marchessault will probably be more than that. Someone has to go. It might be Marchessault even, depending on the number he wants.

Cotter, I agree shouldn’t take a spot for someone that is simply better.

          • Pistol Pete

TS not enough cap space. Hanifin, Marchessault, Hertl and Dorofeyev is close to all there is room for on the salary cap. Stephenson, Martinez. Carrier and Amadio are all on expiring contracts.
Adding Hanifin and Hertl is why there is so little space. Just enough to sign Marchessault, Dorofeyev and little else. Sadly, Stephenson, Martinez, Amadio and Carrier will be gone unless Marchy walks and that would only add around $6m in space.

          • NAM

Pete do you really think Marchessault is going to sign for 6 million? You keep throwing that number around like you are sure of it. Have you looked at what other 40+ goal scorer make? Looking at the current list Marchessault would be comparable to Filip Forsberg at 8.5 mil or Brayden Point at 9.5 million. He would really really have to like Vegas to pass up 2-4 million dollars a year for a few years. I could see 7-8 million range if he really wants to stay here and VGK won’t/can’t budge.

  5. JB

Nice solid win. Butch said Hertl will probably start out on wing. The final 7 games will be used to see just where he fits in best. More than excited to see him play, hopefully Friday. The boys are rolling at the right time.

    • Pistol Pete

So Rashaad it appears you could be spot on starting Hertl at wing at least for his first game. Did not hear Cassidy indicated that. Pretty sure he goes to C down the road though.

  6. TS

Fun game to watch! The boys had high energy, speed, they were clicking on all fronts. There has definitely been an uptick in intensity– the guys found that extra gear needed for the playoffs, and are playing a complete game at last. Looks like they did indeed save the best for last!

  7. A really solid effort overall, things ‘trending in the right direction’ to quote coachspeak.

Power play showing signs of life… the pieces on the chessboard of hockey were actually active…passing was crisp.. and amazingly enough shots were put on net!!

A special thank you to Bruce Cassidy for finally listening to me and putting Hanifin on the first unit PP! We have never had a D man who can skate like him and instinctively join the rush, I know we have Shea but he is a distinctly different type of skater!!

I still believe we are likely to face the nucks in the first round as the oilers will complete their pretty incredible turnaround with a first place finish, time will tell I suppose.

    • Bolts1

yes, I noticed that the PP looked much better with Hanifin at the point, and Theodore sitting on the bench.

The difference is that Hanifin moves the puck much quicker, skates much better, and is quicker thinking and reacting, knows his options, and does not have to dust it off and think about it before passing it.

also, if it gets by him out to the neutral zone, he gets there in a hurry to recover it, and does not get rattled and turn it over to a chasing opponent.

no question, the addition of Hanifin, Stone, and Hertl on the PP will eventually mean a better PP for the Vgk.

      • Bolts1, i obviously agree and concur with how you further embellished my thoughts on this subject.

  8. Tim

High energy about time don’t you think. All year Ive preached and it been disheartening watching the Knights just go through the motions. Now the scare of not making the playoffs all of a sudden there playing with energy. John Tortorella has the right idea you don’t want to play hard you sit. I don’t care for excuses your getting paid X amount of dollars to perform if you don’t sit or send them off to Buffalo a fate worse then death. The fans pay good money to watch the game and to play the way we have at home is disrespectful to the fan base. Now all is well because were 9-2-1 in the last 12 games. I know your all hockey experts and I’m not but as long as I coached which was 30 years I never went into a game with the thought of losing.I never mention my baseball credentials but my professional career after my playing days consisted in coaching minor league baseball. I never made an excuse when I did lose unlike hockey there’s always an excuse. I’m happy the Knights are winning hopefully to the Stanley Cup.

  9. They played with the intensity their capable of and it paid off. The two new guys are getting into the swing of things each with a goal last night. Great win and effort all around. What was the most impressive they didn’t let up.

  10. knights fan in minny

solid effort by all the boys know its crunch time

  11. In my opinion there is no way a 34 year old Marchy will be signed for 7-8 million, regardless of what others are making.

Mr. Conn Smythe will accept that 6 million for 3 years in a classic hometown discount deal, perhaps with incentives to be realized as well.

    • knights fan in minny

we will see if the conn smythe winner has a big ego

      • Minny, his ego far outweighs his stature lol, but he also is a great teammate wiling to do whatever it takes to win, so it’s possible he will not want to uproot his family and can somehow survive on a paltry $6 million a year!! Lol

    NAM, above you wrote:

“Pete do you really think Marchessault is going to sign for 6 million? You keep throwing that number around like you are sure of it.”

It’s a hope and a prayer he’ll sign for that cuz it’s around all they’ll be able to offer. If you total the pre-trade deadline expiring contracts (Martinez, Marchessault, Stephenson, Carrier, Amadio and Dorofeyev) plus the $4m 2024-25 cap increase about $21m in cap space is created. Hertl is a new contract so that has to be deducted from the $21m leaving $14.25m to sign Hanifin, Mantha, Martinez, Marchessault, Stephenson, Carrier, Amadio and Dorofeyev. Take your pick. Mine are Hanifin (becaause they traded for him with the intent to sign him no matter what happens with Marchy and I agree), Marchessault and Dorofeyev. The others all have to walk.

If Hanifin will take $7m and Marchy $6m, that leaves $1.25m for Dorofeyev. I think they may trade Whitecloud bringing in Korczak which would free up a couple million in cap space. They’ll need Brisson and count him against the cap as well. It’s going to be tight. Fingers crossed Dorofeyev does not receive an offer sheet.

It will be interesting to see how the postseason goes and if Marchy puts the team’s interests ahead of his own. He might and besides perhaps they can structure a multi-year deal where the amount increases as the cap goes up. Could also work for a Hanifin deal? These guys understand the cap is tight so hopefully they work with the owner. Good owner. Hanifin has said he likes the winning culture here.

    • NAM

Thanks for the well thought out reply. I agree with you about Hanifin. I do think he would be a good long term d man in Vegas. He fits good in the system. He is at 4.95 million now. I assumed a bump in pay, but I am surprised by your 7 million dollar figure. I was thinking 5.5 to 6. So maybe a little more for Marchessault.

Doro is an interesting situation, that I don’t understand all that well. He is up for RFA with arbitration. He is running at half a point per game with 12 goals in 40 games this year. He had 7 goals in 18 games last year with the same half a point per game average. He doesn’t have to take a low ball offer from VGK and can go to arbitration. Not exactly sure what the value will be, but it is going to be more than 1.25 mil I would think. Again I have no clue. If SinBin does another pod cast all this salary junk would be a segment.

Thanks for your thoughts on Marchessault and answering my question. It would be amazing if he would sign for 6 mil to fit the cap. Personally, 6mil is where I feel he *should* be, but I will say this. If that was the magic number it would probably be done already. The leverage is definitely on his side at this point and going up as he continues scoring. I still hold to the between 7 to 8 million range is what they will settle on…or he walks. We will all find out soon enough.

      • Pistol Pete

NAM You could be right on the $7-8m for Marchy. I can really see Foley getting involved on his salary negotiations in order that he does not walk. The team’s historical success is tied to key trades and the crowding of the salary cap. Marchy would not have won his CS and Cup without it so he should be understanding of the situation including the need now to perpetuate the team’s viability by acquiring the younger Hanifin and Hertl (Hertl is older than Hanifin but younger than Marchy) . Ken has been saying Hanifin $7m for eight years. We’ll see.

I am not quite at the point where I see Theodore as a possible trade to create cap space. I am coming around a little to the notion he is nursing an injury but still with the number of assists he’s had since returning from injury I have trouble thinking he is not still a key piece in an excellent D corp.. If he is not quite himself he is still performing at a high enough level imo. If there is something going on with his health it should resolve.

  14. Who cares – they won and everyone contributed. Why bother to pick fly shit out of pepper. I know you’re an avid supporter of Dorofeyev but leave this to his agent to shove down everyone’s throat.

  15. Playing for and living in Vegas has great tax advantages which I am sure all concerned take into consideration. I am more interested in what they are capable of accomplishing this year versus worrying about next. You will all have plenty of time come July to configure next year team. I am confident none of you qualify nor have any real idea what the FO might or might not do. Your going thru the wishful thinking phase. Concentrate on this year and repeat winning the Stanley Cup again.

    • Pistol Pete

hdbiker I completely agree let’s focus on the here and now but when it comes to Marchy it’s tough not to speculate plus there is concern among fans whether he stays due to cap limitations but yeah let’s repeat first and worry about it during the summer! There will be some changes in the roster for sure though due to adding Hertl and Hanifin. Some players won’t be extended due to cap constraints. Will be interesting to see how the FO does it. For now though we have everybody plus hopefully Stone. At their best this team is hard to play against for ANY team. Personally I like the Hertl and Hanifin additions.

    • NAM

Not sure why the complaint? I guess we can’t just talk about other VGK things. Has to be the current game or the next game? We have to dwell on the same rehashed game data and lack of injury info etc until the end of the season? With 2 days between games and last game hashed over pretty well I don’t see why we can’t have discussion about any thing related to VGK, if it engages conversation. I read stuff on here all the time that seems dumb to me or I am not interested in, but I usually just go onto the next post or do something else. Not complain because other people are having a discussion that I have no interest in.

  16. After last night it would seem like my belief the oilers would catch the canucks was simply a pipe dream, and the seeming inevitability of VGK facing the oilers in the first round is a distinct probability, so now I will concentrate my thoughts on the Golden Knights overtaking the oilers for second place and home ice advantage!
