Recap: The Golden Knights were looking to take a 3-2 series lead with a Game 5 victory over the Utah Mammoth at T-Mobile Arena. Utah struck first with under three minutes left in the opening frame. With :41 remaining Pavel Dorofeyev evened the score with a late power play score.
Utah took a 2-1 lead midway through the middle period. Five Minutes later Dorofeyev responded with his second game-tying goal of the night.
Vegas held momentum after killing off a four-minute high-sticking penalty. However, the Mammoth evened the score on a two-on-one breakout through the Golden Knights defense. On another odd-man rush Utah took the lead with seven minutes left in the match. With under a minute remaining in Game 5, Dorofeyev completed his hat trick and evened the score once again. For the second straight game, overtime was needed for a decision.
Ivan Barbashev drew a penalty in OT to set up a game winning power play. Utah killed it off and forced a second overtime period. Vegas eventually won in double overtime with a shorthanded goal by Brett Howden.
The Golden Knights take a 3-2 series edge by defeating the Mammoth 5-4 in 2OT. The two teams will travel back to Utah for Game 6 on Friday night. Vegas will have a chance to eliminate Utah and advance to the second round with a win. Puck drop is scheduled for 7PM PT.(Recap by Jason)
Analysis: It’s a story as old as time with the 25-26 Golden Knights. They fell into a deficit in the 1st period, and rescued it. They fell into another deficit in the 2nd period, and not only rescued it but took the lead. Then, the best 3rd period team in the league didn’t look like themselves and they gave up the lead and looked in serious trouble. But, in VGK fashion, they rescued it yet again, for the 7th time in 5 games. In double OT, the story of the series came through yet again, the penalty kill. Eichel had a chance, stopped, then Howden had a chance, bang. VGK have won consecutive games and now have a 3-2 lead in the series. Brett Howden also has his third career playoff OT goal. One more baby!
Henderson One
What a great game that was. I thought they would lose it after the poor power play in the first overtime.
Hey guys help me. Why did the VGK change their method of entering the offensive zone in the Power Play in the first overtime? It resulted in a putrid effort and every attempt to enter the offensive zone was a failure.
Larry
Utah is taking away the back pass, primarily to Eichel and the build up of speed entering the zone, credit to them for doing so and VGK will have to adapt and take advantage of it.
Henderson One
Thank you for the explaination. I think they need to adjust as they were unable to enter the offensive zone using their current approach.
Larry
Regardless to the fact they are I believe 3-19 on the Power Play, it is beyond futilely putrid right now and is a major liability, regardless to the lucky one they scored on yesterday due to a fortunate bounce.
Power Play #4 was an abject failure in regulation as Utah possessed the puck nearly as long as we did and we were fortunate was not a solid short handed opportunity.
Last time I will mention the fix, Hertl off the first unit and Andersson in, problems solved!
Larry
Bye bye $&)($ oilers… good riddance’m

Doro + Howdy = Resilient victory
cardiac kids take us to the brink every time.
let’s end it Friday with a conventional get a lead and keep it victory.

Man u wanted to come on here and bitch about so many things but that Howden OT winner took me back. Hertl is a concern but he’s right fucking there I can feel it (pause) As long as the rest of the team just keeps pushing forward I believe Hertl will arrive at the right time. Hart is mid until he’s absolutely clutch like I can’t even explain it. He sometimes let’s ones get past him that you want saved in a playoff game but then keeps your team in a game in the most intense situations and I think with even more reps and playoff games he will eventually elevate his game but they need to close out in 6 or 7 for us to find out. This Utah team is too pesky I hate them just go away already.

Wow nutz Are you Sybil’s twin

Guess that begins to answer some questions about Pav in the playoffs. Two games in a row where Marner’s strength on the puck sets up a Howden shortie. Way to go Howie a rare SHG OT winner! Now let’s close this thing out in Salt Lake Friday GKG!!!
Jerry
Is it just me or does Brett Howden look just like the dread pirate roberts in The princess bride movie ?

From NHL.com:
NOTES: Howden became the second player to score a short-handed winner in a game that required multiple overtimes (since 1933-34 when goals by type began being tracked), following teammate Tomas Hertl, who did so in Game 6 of the 2019 First Round against the Golden Knights while he was a member of the San Jose Sharks. … Dorofeyev became the fourth player in franchise history with a playoff hat trick, following Mark Stone (Game 5 of 2023 Stanley Cup Final and Game 3 of 2019 First Found), Jonathan Marchessault (Game 6 of 2023 Second Round and Game 4 of 2021 Second Round) and Mattias Janmark (Game 7 of 2021 First Round). He also became the fourth player in NHL history to score three game-tying goals in a playoff contest, following Dale Hunter (Game 2 of 1993 DSF), Dirk Graham (Game 4 of 1992 SCF) and Michel Goulet (Game 3 of 1985 DF). … Eichel became the fastest American player to reach 40 career playoff assists (45 games), eclipsing Brian Leetch (48).
Me thinks Pav could be the long term answer to the Eichel line.

Great stats,Pp!!
I think we’re witnessing the resurrection of the VGK’s success! Torts is looking like a GENIUS! He benches Doro one game, and Doro explodes as a result! Howden steps up and carries the team to the OT victory— you can’t script this crazy game!
This takes the pressure off the entire team, knowing they have all their sharp- shooters hitting the Net again!
We’ve got the edge and momentum going back to Utah– fans there will be desperate and LOUD. But it’s now tipped our way, a very good place to be. Funny that the TNT guys aren’t surprised at yet another comeback– they have more confidence in our team than many of us have had recently. They see the whole picture, and it looks pretty dang good right now!!

PP,
Thanks for the great info.
When I look back and see what we are paying Howden and the years left on his contract I just keep thinking what a great deal this is for VGK. Now get Doro extended and the fourth liners.
Jake
Great Marner assist, brings pain to Toronto.

I can’t really jump out of my chair, but I sure tried when we tied it with 52 seconds left! I had to wait and watch the second OT until this morning. It was a cool wake-up !

It was good to see something that was needed around here especially for the fans they are very loyal through the good times and the bad times the building was always sold out They match up pretty well against the Avalanche I have a sneaking suspicion the loser oilers around draft time will come knocking on the wild door Unavailability of a goaltender

Availability of a goaltender not with it today Too much late night hockey

Crazy but true: Exactly one year ago (yesterday) Brett Howden scores the OT winner in game 5 of the first round (against MN). Cue the Twilight Zone music…..
I was at the game and my heart rate was spiking. This morning I have no voice. That game was a classic.

Great win – that said the knights need to figure out away to avoid playing from behind – yes they won again but that kind of stuff is not substantable, it just isn’t. Time to put Utah to sleep Friday night and erase this coming from behind situation once and for all. Go knights go let’s see a series win in six.

Strong on the wall strong on the puck howdy with a fantastic play for the big game winner man two overtime games nerve racking hart With two big saves that could have been the game the breakaway and the save right after that

R1 G5 Analysis VGK 5, UTA 4 2OT
Wow, talk about a rollercoaster set of emotions! The inconsistency of this team is absolutely maddening and frustrating. Imagine the team being booed loudly in a playoff game on home ice because the power play was complete shit. Credit the Mammoth. Shame on the fans, but just maybe they got a message.
This team is much better than having to fight back from multiple game deficits, but for some reason the inconsistency creates fan base panic attacks. Several times during this contest, and throughout the series we have seen the VGK completely dominate, and other times it looks as though they forgot how to even play the game.
Carter’s an upgrade in net, but isn’t much better than Hill on breakaways. The best we had in that category was Fleury.
Pavel is going to need to be paid. He’s just 25 and is going to be a Golden Knight for years to come. Howden? What can be said? Clutch.! Marner? Opportunistic!
If this team can lose the inconsistency, and if Hertl and Barbashev can start producing more then this team is a Cup contender. Also, watching closely to see if Wild Bill will return in R2 (if we actually make it).
knights fan in minny
Barbashev is producing just fine What are you getting at
VGK Fan
Is there a chance Wild Bill is back for this years Stanley Cup Playoffs? If so who would come out of the lineup?
Pete Turner
I know it is easy to bash on Hertl right now but you guys need to appreciate that no player has been bashed more by the opposing team than #48 because he is willing to stand near the blue paint and receive all that abuse. Moreover despite 16min TOI, he managed to get an assist on one of Pavel’s hat trick. Instead of focusing on the negative, let’s celebrate the fact that last night’s game was the first one where we did not concede an own goal. Tomorrow’s game will be chippy and difficult. Lets focus on scoring, forechecks and not taking stupid penalties. Keep things simple guys.
Go Knights Go!
