TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 5 VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3 (36-25-7, 79 PTS)

Recap: The Golden Knights hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning for an out-of-conference battle from The Fortress. Vegas jumped out in the lead immediately out of the gates. Jonathan Marchessault recorded his 38th goal of the season 1:14 into the game. Six minutes after the Lightning evened the score and added the go-ahead goal a few shifts later.

Vegas forward Brett Howden scored the only goal in the 2nd period to make it 2-2 going into the second intermission.

Tampa took a 3-2 lead to open the final frame but Ben Hutton found the equalizer moments later. Down the stretch, the Lightning regained their lead, added an empty net goal and held on to win 5-3.

The Golden Knights record drops to 36-25-7 losing 5-3 to the Lightning. Vegas’ next game is on Thursday night against Seattle Kraken. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: This was one of VGK’s best forechecking games of the season. They were causing all sorts of problems in the Tampa end and it eventually led to a bundle of dangerous chances. They were able to get three but that wasn’t enough as Adin Hill put up what was likely his worst game of the year. (Analysis by Ken)

Adin Hill should not be given anymore starts this season he has completely dragged this team down. Stick with LT moving forward and who gives a fuck about playoffs when your goalie can’t stop a fucking beach ball. That contract is pure garbage.

  2. Barbasol

Anthony Mantha was an absolute terrible trade. What a waste of space. Cotter would kill to have his skill set. Mantha could care less outside of collecting his paycheck.

I wish NHL contracts were like NFL contracts. These bums need to be shown the door

  3. I am so disgusted…speechless. I was one of those stating clearly that Logan should have started. Period.!

I slammed the remote down in disgust ad turned the tv off, and told the wife I simply can’t watch fucking Hill in the net right now.

I will sum it up how I feel and what my eyes see, i feel I am watching Subban back between the pipes and grin and bear every shot on net, and that my friends says a lot!!

  4. A sad state of affairs – the last two goals showed just how slow Vegas is – they were out hustled big time. Hill was pathetic as Vegas as a whole played pretty well. The door is closing much to my dismay.

    • TS

I was awake for 1st and 3rd periods. Saw a short- handed Tampa goal and yet ANOTHER empty netter against us. Where is the REAL HILL?? Where the hell did the “Cup Hill” go?? And WHERE is our WINNING TEAM???

Guess I should be grateful I missed the rest.

  5. Jim Burke

Lots of experts on here I’ve been Looking at for years… So I’m sure I’ll get all kinds of expert reviews…
But, very simple. This team is in trouble, and any team that keeps giving up 2 to 3 goals in the 3rd period is going nowhere. The 3rd period goal differential is the most telling stat… trust me.. these guys are done..

  6. ct

What is Hill thinking? His mind is not on the game. Been to every game this season and he has gotten worse with every puck drop. No motivation on this team and why bench Pav when we need the scoring? Bring the puck up go to the corner and here
comes the double and triple team. Hague should be in the AHL he turns the puck over every time plus he is a lousy defender. Totally disgusted with this team. The one bright spot is we’ll save a ton. of money on playoff tickets. This was the death nail tonight.

    • Mel Hallerman

Actually, Shea Theodore is a lousy, flatfooted defender. Good on offense but terrible on defense.

    • ThG

Pav couldn’t go, he wasn’t benched.

  7. DeezNutz

The moment the sports media started calling Adin Hill the best goalie in Canada and that he would potentially be Canada’s goalie at the Olympics he started to play like pure shit. This guy needs to keep his ass away from social media and all sports media and stop believing his own hype. Same with LT who turned into a pumpkin after being named an all star. This team can’t string wins together if their lives depended on it. They will miss the playoffs and be the laughing stock of the entire league plus not to mention the disrespect toward the FO and owner of this team for going all in and wasting future picks on a team that struggles with scoring, defending and making saves. There is no way Hanifin is signing a contract with a fringe playoff team that has shit goaltending and streaky offense. What a total waste of draft picks.

  8. Barb

The funniest thing I have seen in a hockey game: On Hutton’s goal there was 4 Lightening players (including the goalie) flat on the ice trying to protect the net and Ben just shot the puck over the top of all of them. GREAT GOAL!

  9. Rashaad

The problem with the goaltending is that Logan Thompson has not been great either.

    Since January 1st…..

    Logan Thompson in 15 games.
    7-6-2, .906 SV%, 2.84 GAA

    Adin Hill in 15 games.
    7-8-0, .898 SV%, 3.32 GAA

They clearly don’t trust Thompson which is why Hill has played the vast majority of games when he is healthy. Played five games in a row recently as they are trying to get him on a roll. They are running out of time waiting for Hill to regain his form. They may have to go with Thompson even though they don’t trust him.

    • Rashad – Just a question – what makes you think they don’t trust LT?. Based on Hill’s performance of late what would have you believe they trust him any more. He hasn’t been up to the Stanley Cup performance even from the start of the season

      • Rashaad

Hdbiker7851, I could be wrong as I making an assumption based on……

        1) Logan Thompson never plays 2 games in a row unless Hill is injured.
        2) Adin Hill has started 8 of the last 10 games including a string of 5 in a row.
        3) Adin Hill has performed suboptimally during that time but they keep putting him out there.

When I say that they don’t trust Logan, I mean that I don’t think that they believe Logan Thompson can be successful as the number one goalie in a playoff in the way that they believed in Adin Hill, Robin Lehner or Marc Andre Fluery.

Adin Hill has been so bad that they may have to use Logan Thompson more then they want to but it seems as though they want Adin Hill to figure it out and fix his game rather then turn to Logan.

        FOR NOW.

  10. Duckboy

    Went to the game
20 knights players seemed like they had finally gotten it together.
1 knights player was an absolute joke.
2 very bad penalty calls against us didn’t help as well.

    Problem is Thompson any better?

    Smells like spring 2022….

  11. Pistol Pete

Saw the game tonight again a pleasure to be with Richie-Rich. We both agreed the VGK played be
very well except for the PP including Eichel mishandling the puck leading to the SHG and some goaltending issues. The PP is an issue I will concede that and Hill. VGK forechecking was unbelievable and both teams defended well. VGK excellent on the rush. They really looked good other than the PP and Hill. Still in the driver’s seat for the second WC.

VGK needs 9-5 for 97 pts
MIN needs 10-3 for 96 pts
STL needs 11-2 for 95 pts

Play STL first game of the road trip and MIN the 4th game. Play MIN again at home.

  12. Pistol Pete

Hertl expected to skate as early as the end of the week or beginning on the road trip for sure.

    • Rashaad

Very excited to see Hertl, however if the goalies can’t make stops it unfortunately won’t matter.

  13. Tim

I’ve got a different take I thought we [played decent Hill not beat him up but we can’t trust him. I can live with this loss Tampa’s a pretty good team. What bothers me are all the games we’ve loss to bottom feeders that’s where we’ve lost the year not the Tampa game. There’s an old saying in sports you beat the teams you should beat and beat half the teams you shouldn’t beat.

    • ThG

you realize TB is not a bottom feeder, right ?

  14. Pistol Pete

    Barbashev-Eichel-Marchessault
    Stephenson-Hertl-Mantha
    Dorofeyev/Cotter-Karlsson-Amadio
    Carrier-Roy-Kolesar

    Hanafin-Pietrangelo
    McNabb-Theodore
    Hutton/Hague/Whitecloud/Korczak-Martinez

Mantha has been growing on me. Smart heads-up player imo.

  15. Rashaad

Further to my point that they don’t trust Logan, I also don’t as well. I don’t like his style and the way he loses his net so easily. Hill is better positionally and his style works if the team plays well in front of him. I can see why they feel like their guy has to be Hill. I wouldn’t be shocked if Hill gets the next start as well. Hill is .898 since January 1st and no team can win with that. Just look at what happened to New Jersey. They don’t have the luxury of bc an option C. I think Thompson should get a 3 or 4 game in a row look but I don’t think they try that yet.

Ran some numbers and since January 1st, among the 41 goalies that have played atleast 13 games, Logan Thompson ranks 20th in save percentage and Adin Hill is 28th. It’s bad.

  16. PP…what Mantha are you watching?? The Mantha i see is a soft ineffective player, I would have much preferred they had traded for DuClair.

    • Pistol Pete

He has 21 goals. He does not play heavy and he’s a huge guy but I am talking about finesse, playmaking and positioning. He moves fast enough when he has to. It’s our opinion compared to their scouting. I’ll take their scouting over us. Duclair may have worked but I am sure they considered that. Duclair is known for not being good away from the puck which does not work for Cassidy.

    • knights fan in minny

he should be planting that big ass in front of the net

  17. Im telling you, I see the second coming of Subban, and who could have predicted that 9 short months ago…sigh!

  18. Richie-Rich

    Game 68 Analysis TBL 5, VGK 3

    VGK falls to 36-25-7, 79pts .581, +14 GF/GA

The VGK (79pts) slips 2 additional points behind the Predators (84pts) for the 1st Wild Card spot with a game in hand, and drops 2 points behind the Kings (81pts) for 3rd place in the Pacific. There are 14 games remaining in the season.

In a game where the VGK played extremely well it turned out to be poor goaltending and a totally inept power play that was their undoing in this contest. The window for a postseason berth is still open, but it is closing and the Wild and Blues would love to beat us to it.

    3rd Star – Kolesar
    2nd Star – Marchy
    1st Star – Hutton

There are 14 games left in the season. The VGK must now go 9-5 in order to reach 97 points. The Golden Knights remain in control of their own destiny. Next game is at home vs the Seattle Kraken 28-27-12 (68pts) .507 -14 GF/GA and losers of three straight games. The VGK were defeated on New Years Day by Seattle and won in OT against them by a score 5-4 in the last contest. I have this game marked as CRITICAL MUST WIN.

The VGK remain 3pts in front of the Wild and 4pts in front of the Kraken with a game in hand. However, the VGK are 7-10-1 since the break and their record does not instill confidence in the fan base that they can maintain the last playoff spot. A record of 9-5 will likely get them in with 97 total points, and 8-6 record 95, 7-7 93, 6-7 92.

    Who misses Fleury???
    Lol
What did we get for him when we traded him?? Oh yeah I remember, NOTHING.

This team has an issue with net minders.

Who we let go that should have probably stayed.
    Fleury
    Brossoit
    Quick

Now we got that crazy snake boy Lehnor, Thompson. And Hill.
    Woooowwwwww

  20. Canada

Once again the knights don’t seem to have urgency they leave things to the end . Nice early goal and third period in between not so much , I haven’t forgot how many nights Hill saved our Ass so i’m not on the dump Hill wagon i think he will show up in the end but its time . I also think Cassidy is still tinkering and still hasn’t found his lines other than the first line . We did hit a few post had a couple bad breaks made some sloppy mistakes . With a sense of urgency from the drop of the puck to the buzzer we see could a different team . Maybe one ring is enough for these guys as fans we expect more .

    • TS

Canada, I sure hope Hill wakes up, cause he seems to have been asleep at the wheel the past couple months!

  21. ThG

anyone on hill’s case is clueless in watching the games, just like the people who think genocide joe is doing a good job ! He’s one train wreck after another.

Marty has had a terrible year, and no. 27 is now even worse. Ever since coming back from injury no. 27 is not skating well at all. Beat along the boards in nearly every game.

What is up with that ? Learn to watch what is really happening on the ice.

That non call on icing was pretty much the game too, VGK players let up. TB did not. What a horrible game changer.

Cassidy is holding on by a thread.

    • NHhell

exactly. where is the rightful bashing of the lazy loafing wonderboy, Theodore? that is 2 games in a row he has been the shittiest player on the ice when it comes to hustle and effort.

he is an obvious Vgk problem on the point on the PP, but the real kicker about him is his chickening out whenever a puck needs to be chased back into the Knight’s end, and he has a man chasing him, he just quits skating, slows up and GIVES the opponent the puck. That cost the Knights 2 goals. Yes, Hill was leaky, but Theodore was shitty because he basically refuses to hustle for his team.

yeah, he gets the occasional assist, but then gives it all back and more in his own end. He was minus 2 last night, and he is 16 goals worse than his d partner McNabb, +2 compared to +18 for McNabb. what that signifies is that in offensive situations when he is on the ice without McNabb, the team sucks.

Give me a hustling Hutton type player any day over a Theodore or Mantha loafer.

      • Pistol Pete

Another slew of nontruths from NewHampshireHell.

        • NHhell

how come they don’t play him on the PK, huh?

because he is shit defensively, that’s why.

I guess the coaching staff is full of “nontruths” too, huh?

everybody here just laughs at your fawning absurd worship over Dorofeyev.

          • ThG

ignore popgun pedro nhhell, he doesn’t know what he is watching on his small mobile cell phone, clueless babbling most of time mainly about cotter and pav.

  22. Bobby

Hanifin comes in at the deadline, and is instantly the team’s best defenseman, that says a lot. Gotta keep em at all costs.

  23. Mel Hallerman

Actually, Shea Theodore is a lousy, flatfooted defender. Good on offense but terrible on defense.

  24. Pistol Pete

“Actually, Shea Theodore is a lousy, flatfooted defender.”

Assessment by yet another armchair scout lol. +65 over his seven seasons with Vegas. I don’t care how many points you get you don’t get to +65 defending poorly.

    • ThG

stats tell you were you have been, not where you are going

      WAKE UP POPGUN PEDRO

      • Pistol Pete

This season he’s a point a game (33/33) and +2. Spin how you choose but Theo is an important piece and he’s good enough defensively on the average including moving into the future.

All the D’s +/- are down this season partly due to injuries, except McNabb who is rock but does not score very much. Petro plays monster minutes.

        • Pistol Pete

Seems too ThG per your comments to NHhell above re: me and Pav/Cotter it’s more clear than ever that you just can’t grasp the importance of one of them (pseudo) replacing Smith. Some things are just so simple.

  25. Vic

McPhee fired Cassidy once, and I have to believe it might happen again any day now. Might not be the correct decision in the long run, but not sure what else can wake up this bunch in the short run. You know the top brass is asking Cassidy WTF is going on, and he’s running out of excuses. Just the nature of the game and the business.

    • ThG

they will wait until after he misses the playoffs, if team indeed does miss playoffs to make a coaching change

funny how last time two years ago how the idiots on this forum wanted PDB head, yet the team was much much much more competitive and games were a lot closer and came down to one OT loss in last week of season

cassidy gets a pass, because he won the cup, yet it looks likely as if he has lost the locker room more and more every day.

      • Pistol Pete

Is that a definitive if they miss the playoffs Cassidy will be fired?

  26. Pistol Pete

    Shea Theodore: a combination 2-way/Transitional D.

    https://www.capfriendly.com/scouting-report/shea-theodore-123495

  27. Henderson One

Only good news is maybe we won’t have to pay those inflated Playoff ticket prices.

  28. Minny… I totally agree…seems best for him to be stationary though he may not like the feel of a body next to his!!

    • knights fan in minny

i would have rather had duclair he can flat out fly and score

  29. I have stated that before as well, and much cheaper too…credit though goes to Mantha and his agent for that apparent monster contract he was able to sign before, as his next one will be considerably less!

  30. Pistol Pete

Alert on the key positions of various posters!

    1. ThG, NHhell, and Mel Hallerman all believe Theodore is a lousy D who can’t defend including play the PK.

    2. ThG and NHhell belittle the all important concern of what young player (if any) in the organization can replace Smith, Cotter and Dorofeyev being the only two candidates, Again, looking at the most obvious lineup the Cotter/Dorofeyev consideration is integral and may play a part in the postseason success:

    Barbashev-Eichel-Marchessault
    Stephenson-Hertl-Mantha
    Cotter or Dorofeyev-Karlsson-Amadio
    Carrier-Roy-Kolesar

Should Stone return he goes on the Hertl line bumping Mantha down to the Karlsson line or could even put him, Amadio, Cotter and Dorofeyev all in play as far as who Karlsson’s wingers are. I would say Mantha and Amadio are the likely choices leaving Dorofeyev and Cotter out future injuries notwithstanding.

    3. ThG belives Cassidy could be fired.

So consideriong posters views above it will be interesting to see how the rest of this season plays out. Depending on what happens it could be fun to go back through and look at various claims in hindsight!!!

    • TS

Cassidy won’t be fired, even if we miss playoffs. He’ll get a pass. THIS season. If next season is a repeat of this one, I hate to say it, but Foley will probably fire him. I feel Cassidy is NOT the problem. The players are the problem. Is it chemistry? New guys? Hurt/ tired guys? Lack of, well, you name it right now…so many things lacking…

      • Pistol Pete

TS, Foley will go along with whatever McPhee and McCrimmon decide which for the foreseeable future does not include firing Cassidy. Personally I don’t think it’s very smart (not you) to even mention the possibility. He was integral to winning the Cup and has been beset this season by more than his fair share of injuries including that he remains without his captain. Without researching it I doubt many coaches have been fired so close to winning the Cup.

If you’d care to be specific I’ll respond.

“here is your buddy in action “a bad read by no. 27””

You mean on the breakaway, the one neither him nor the speedy Eichel could run down? Surprising how even the speediest skaters can’t catch up on those. Remember how the slow Stone was able to pull away in game 5? But yeah it looked like Theo was counting on Eichel to take possession and when he did not both him and Eichel were of out position. “Your buddy”? You mean he’s not yours? 15 pts in 13 games +1 since coming back from injury and he’s not your buddy too? Plus he set up goal #1 vs. TBL.

  31. Pistol Pete

    Theodore in VGK’s five postseasons:

    60 pts/87 games = .69 pts/game (+25)

Current status (per some “fans”): “Lousy D. Lazy. Can’t/unwilling to defend”. Lol.

My take: Injuries this season have made it tougher on the D’s. Whole lines from Henderson. Goalie injuries. Partly as a result, the D’s +/- are challenged.

    • ThG

“stats tell you where you have been
        not where you are going”

You mean as in since returning from injury 15 pts in 13 games +1? His partner McNabb who is +18 on the season was just +2 for that stretch which should tell you something. Bottom line Theo has been anything but poor.

        “WAKE UP !!”

Could be equally rude but will be nice (because I am) and won’t be.

“learn to watch hockey, get new eye glasses”

        See the latter.

“27 needs to turn things around, he has been playing very poor recently”

See stats above. Fact is Theo is probably if anything stronger on offense than defending but we should ask McNabb about it. You may not like his response.
In any case if “playing very poor recently’ includes setting up a goal on the game’s first shot we’d all like to see what playing great is. Overall not one of your favorite players on the roster looks like!
