VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5 TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 4 (34-18-4, 72 PTS)

Recap:  The Golden Knights hosted the Tampa Bay Lightning trying to extend their winning streak to five games. The Lighting got on the board first but seven seconds later Brett Howden evened the score. Tampa took a 2-1 lead minutes later on the power play but again Vegas and Jonathan Marchessault answered right back. The Golden Knights offense continued to pressure the Lightning and rattled off three straight goals. After the opening 20 minutes Vegas held a 4-2 advantage over Tampa.

Tampa got closer in the middle frame, but Vegas tightly held on to their lead. After 40 minutes of action, the Golden Knights lead 4-3.

Up by one the Golden Knights kept pushing the Lightning in the final period limiting the visiting team to only a handful of shots. Nic Roy iced the game with an empty-net goal with minutes remaining in the game. Tampa got one back but wouldn’t get any closer.

The Golden Knights’ record improves to 34-18-4 defeating the Lightning 5-4. Vegas will look to continue their five-game winning streak on Tuesday in Chicago. Puck drop against the Blackhawks is set for 5:30 PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: It was a frantic start to the game with VGK falling behind twice in the 1st, but they answered quickly and furiously to not only stay in the game but take a two goal lead into the break. The 2nd was a bit of a scary one as the Golden Knights tried to just hang on and nearly gave up the lead. The 3rd was a masterclass in shutting down a good team’s attack. VGK kept everything to the outside and had excellent sticks when passes were attempted through the middle. Fantastic win against a terrific opponent.(Analysis by Ken)

Would have liked 1-2 more saves from Hill but luckily Vasy was having a bad night also. Defense was on point like a pyramid and the offense showed up too. Marchy back? Let’s fucking goooooo!

  2. Sorvino

Tampa is the best team of our era and I would call them a dynasty. In a cap era where there is so much parity they have stood above the rest. Vegas had a big test tonight and I am absolutely disgusted by the performance. What a horrible embarrassment of a game by the VGK. This was a complete shit show.

Shea Theodore and Jonathan Marchessault, in particular were the two worst players on the ice. I think the only way to save their pitiful seasons, are position changes. I am intrigued to see what Marchessault would be like as a defenseman and Theodore as a winger.

I still don’t see how it’s possible that this team will qualify for the playoffs.

The VGK were clearly not prepared tonight to put out an effort and a positive performance. Cassidy please wake these guys up. I don’t care where Chicago is in the standings, but if Vegas plays the same way that they have played the past five games then Chicago is going to obliterate them.

I sense this is an attempt at parody. Can’t for the life of me understand it though….

      • Sorvino

Bwood101, I can explain. I’m mocking 85% of the people who comment in this forum who are always ultra negative and deep down actually want the team to perform badly so they can comment on it.

If you stick around long enough, you’ll see what I mean. When the next three game losing streak comes along and it will because every single team goes through it, the negative comments will go through the roof.

After a win there are about 15 to 25 comments and after a loss it gets upwards to about 80 comments. And whiners will say stuff like they are objective, and calling it like it but they get their silent and don’t feel like calling it what it is when they win five in a row.

  3. Sorvino – you are even a sicker nut than the looney Thg. Yes l know you are just kidding but why bother. If you have nothing to say of consequences why bother. Hard to believe you don’t have better use of your time.

  4. Hockey nuts

What was the puck possession time for each team? TB seemed to have the puck non-stop in the 2nd and 3rd.

  5. Pistol Pete

First period was unbelievable. This game showed that Vegas is a good team even without Stone. Cotter has really stepped up in his elevated role and as long as Howden stays healthy I can see him in the top six one day. Btw the VGK prospect pool is underrated. Example: did anyone predict #115 Cotter would be the player he appears to have become? It’s called great amateur scouting identifying NHL caliber talent after the first and second rounds. The next couple years we’ll see some future NHL players coming up to Henderson.

The Cassidy way: defend first and the offense will come. Great defending in the third period against one of the best teams in the league.

    16-8-2 = 106 pts

  7. Emmanuel

Where’s Jack? OK defensively but a zero on offense.

  8. Jailbird

Another two points , 5 in a row. All the other contending teams in the division won also. Going to be a dog fight, got to keep getting points. We can do this!

TBL pulled goalie too early, costing them a goal. In hindsight the tying goal came afterwards, but that is drawback of pulling goalie too early without complete
puck control in the o zone.

  12. Sorvino

Watching the Minnesota Wild put on a bit of a clinic on the Nashville Predators this afternoon . They are hanging onto a playoff spot and look like they are making a bit of a run. Also, they are completely committed to not using mark Andre Fleury as Filip Gustavsson has gotten all of the starts lately. That means they are serious about winning.

Just bringing this up because they could be a potential first round match up for Vegas.

wild need more talent the word around here is guerin is not saying much flower will be back

    Interesting

  14. Sorvino

Looks like Jonathan Toews will not be traded. Team announced that he is taking some time off as he is suffering from complications from Long Covid.

Detroit is in a playoff spot right now, so Bertuzzi and Larkin are off the board for now.

Maybe Timo Meier is the guy we gotta get. In the past I thought that vegas shouldn’t go all in and mortgage the future too much but I’m thinking that maybe they should just because they are in the Western Conference and the path to the finals is definitely easier than the Eastern conference. It looks like there’s some opportunity here. Colorado is the best, but not as dominant as last year. I feel the Dallas Edmonton and Vegas are all in the same class.

  15. Richie-Rich

I was at the game last night. Last night’s game against a very good team was reminiscent of year 1. I would have to say it was the best game I have seen them play in a long long time. Everyone keeps calling for a so-called quality top tier goaltender. HOGWASH!

    The goaltending is fine.

Getting 4 goals and an empty net against the Lightning? Awesome.

Eichel still doesn’t deserve $10/yr. He should give a chunk of that pay to Carrier and Cotter.

    Solid play all around.

The 2023 NHL Trade Deadline is March 3 at 3 p.m. ET.

    Here are players to watch,

    FORWARDS
    Tyler Bertuzzi, Detroit Red Wings

The 27-year-old is a pending unrestricted free agent.

    Brock Boeser, Vancouver Canucks

. The 25-year-old has two years remaining on his contract

    Nick Bonino, San Jose Sharks

He can become a UFA after the season.

    Max Domi, Chicago Blackhawks

Domi, 27, who is among the Blackhawks’ leading scorers this season, is a pending UFA.

    Lars Eller, Washington Capitals

he has the highest face-off winning percentage on Capitals this season, more than 54 percent. He is a pending UFA.

    Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks

Kane has a no movement clause and would have to approve any trade. The 34-year-old, who is a pending UFA, hat trick today vs loser leafs and o really. Hater of Eichel.

    Timo Meier, San Jose Sharks

The 26-year-old is a pending UFA

    Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks

The 34-year-old center is a pending UFA took himself out of picture due to covid related lingering issues?!

    James van Riemsdyk, Philadelphia Flyers

Van Riemsdyk would be a nice fit for any team looking for forward depth. The 33-year-old is a pending UFA

    DEFENSEMEN
    Justin Braun, Philadelphia Flyers

The 36-year-old stay-at-home defenseman is a pending UFA.

    Jakob Chychrun, Arizona Coyotes

Chychrun has been held out of the lineup for the Coyotes for “trade-related reasons” since Feb. 11. The 24-year-old, who requested a trade last season, has 28 points (seven goals, 21 assists) in 36 games this season and leads the Coyotes in ice time per game (23:16). He has two years remaining on his contract.

    Matt Dumba, Minnesota Wild

The 28-year-old is a pending UFA, can provide physicality and grit.

    Vladislav Gavrikov, Columbus Blue Jackets

Like Chychrun, Gavrikov has been out for “trade-related reasons” since Feb. 14. The 27-year-old has played a key role for the Blue Jackets since Zach Werenski sustained a season-ending shoulder injury in November. Gavrikov can become a UFA after the season.

    Shayne Gostisbehere, Arizona Coyotes
The 29-year-old, who is a pending UFA, can also quarterback the power play.

    Erik Karlsson, San Jose Sharks

Karlsson is closing in on what would be his best NHL season. his salary cap charge ($11.5 million average annual value for the next four seasons after this one). The 32-year-old would make any team better, but how much are teams willing to give up for his services?

    John Klingberg, Anaheim Ducks

Klingberg was not moved at the deadline last season and signed a one-year contract with the Ducks in the offseason. With Anaheim out of the playoff mix, the 30-year-old could be on the move again. Klingberg averages more than 20 minutes of ice time per game and can play in all situations.

    Luke Schenn, Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks already traded captain Bo Horvat, and Schenn is likely on the move too. The 33-year-old leads the NHL in hits and Vancouver in blocked shots. Schenn, who can play on the second or third pair, is a pending UFA with more than 900 regular-season games of experience and a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning (2020, 2021).

    GOALIES
    John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks

The 29-year-old has been a workhorse for the Ducks . Gibson, who would help any team in need of a goalie, has four seasons remaining on his contract.

    James Reimer, San Jose Sharks

The 34-year-old has been both a starter and a backup over the course of his NHL career and has played in the postseason for three teams, the last coming in 2020 with the Carolina Hurricanes. Reimer is a pending UFA who has made at least 21 starts in each of his 13 NHL seasons.

    Semyon Varlamov, New York Islanders

Varlamov, 34, hasn’t been called upon quite as much this season with the emergence of Ilya Sorokin, but he’s been solid when called upon. A pending UFA, Varlamov helped New York reached the third round of the playoffs in 2020 and 2021 and could be on the move if the Islanders fall further out of the wild card race. He has started 58 playoff games in his NHL career.

    Karel Vejmelka, Arizona Coyotes

The 26-year-old has two seasons remaining on his contract.

  17. Pistol Pete

Meirer will be a pending UFA after next season but is said to be in play this deadline. Meier only makes sense for Vegas imo if Stone’s career is over. Signing or renting him would cost something like two prospects, a first and a third. I am beginning to hope Stone had an artificial disc replacement (ADR) although that is just a hope. Possibly it’s the same disc as the last procedure, however that was the lower back (lumbar) and it’s not clear if Eichel’s surgeon who Stone is reputed to have seen for this last procedure does lumbar ADR’s if in fact my hunch is correct. An ADR could have Stone skating as early as this week and contact the second week of April in time to finish the regular season.

I do not recommend renting Meier and don’t believe McCrimmon and McPhee would do that. No move for Meier would be an indicator they expect Stone back no later than to start next season.

I’m sure they are considering Ivan Barbashev a 27 year old C or RW (6’ 1” 195) who is in the last year of his contract with the Blues ($2.25m—pending UFA). Last year he had a career year (26 G/34 A) but has fallen off this season. Smith-Karlsson-Barbashev. Scratch Amadio. I really admire the effort applied by Amadio but Barbashev’s career has been way more productive.
