Recap: The Golden Knights welcomed the lowly Montreal Canadiens to T-Mobile Arena and jumped all over them right from puck drop. It took a bit to finally break through but then Shea Theodore opened the scoring and Ivan Barbashev tallied his first VGK goal.
The Golden Knights continued pummelling the Habs into the 2nd frame and got a quintessential Misfit goal from Reilly Smith on a 2-on-1 feed from William Karlsson.
Things went a little haywire in the 3rd as the Habs broke the shutout then started to make a real comeback. Ivan Barbashev’s chin helped him score Vegas’ fourth goal and give them a 4-1 lead but a pair of Montreal goals in less than a minute made things interesting. Jonathan Quick held strong down the stretch and the Golden Knights took home the victory.
The Golden Knights’ record improves to 37-19-6 defeating the Canadiens 4-3. Vegas now head to the road for a lengthly and difficult five-game swing. The first of the trip is in Florida on Tuesday. Puck drop against the Canadiens is scheduled for 4 PM. (Recap by Ken)
Analysis: For the first 40 minutes of the game it looked exactly like you’d expect from a 1st place team against a last place one. But the 3rd period was a bit of a mess and kinda marred Jonathan Quick’s debut. Wouldn ‘t take too much from that game though. (Analysis by Ken)

This actually very funny stuff probably would be more humorous if it were French considering we just played Montreal.
TS
LOL, But who knows French? In Vegas, Spanish is practically a 2nd language…guess I should open that language app…..

12-7-0 = 106 pts
Barbashev 2 G/3 A in four games. That’s more like the 26 G/36 A player we saw last year.
First two periods I’m thinking Quick is the Renaissance man now I’m thinking the plan all along is to bring up Patera if any period like that third period happened.
Pistol Pete
Patera is having his best HSK season so far despite the poor W/L:
GAA 2.66—SV% .916
Pistol Pete
Marginal W/L is a better description:
12–13-1

Up 3 we quit playing. Not much help for Quick in third. I thought he played well. Very quick in the crease, kind of like MAF. Got the two points. Hit the road and see against some good teams. Back on top in WC!

oints in the w column quick was okay good to get the win in your debut loved the effort by blueger wreaking havoc in front of the net on sheas goal bluges and barber fitting in just fine

didn’t break , bend a little, against weak Habs team.
49 is turning out to be a good pick up, good game
The color announcer for Habs is a real bonehead. He couldn’t stand it when Martinez stood up for Cotter at key junction in game. Hey bozo, that is what you do when you want a momentum change in game ! He got his panties in a wad after that cotter hit. Then he lost it again a bit later, when Habs player fell along the boards and he was yelling “that is a trip, that is a trip, where’ the ref”. Umm, no it wasn’t WATCH THE REPLaY bozo. What a putz.
TS
…and Martinez’ response is what the team has needed— support for each other at times like that. I recall Stone getting pummeled a couple of times, but NO ONE came to his defense!
We’ll get run over until we have an answer to it…Thanks, Martinez, for answering! ( Marchy also knows the answer, not afraid to step up!)

Solid win!

Ken – unless you have some inside info they are playing the Panthers not the Canadians in Florida on Tuesday not Monday.

Solid 2 periods then VGK let their foot up off their throats and almost let them back in it. 12 rows from Quick in period 2 and he cross checks a Hab in front of the net hard! That Quick has some unique goaltending strategies. Still has some skills too.
Bobby
That cross check was my favorite play of the afternoon lol.

funny thing, I watched the TSN2, CANADIAN BROADCAST. They were dropping accolade after accolade on Quick. Pre Game, first period, second period. Then half way through the third period they started trash talking him, putting up his LA stats, and said a bunch of brutal stuff. I said to myself, these guys are clowns. One of worst broadcasting crews in NHL. Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvine would be gagging at this horse spit.
Pistol Pete
I’ll admit that’s basically what I did. I may be wrong.
Bobby
Strong two periods, strong goaltending. Third period- When the team gets complacent, it effects all the way down the line. Plus the Habs had nothing to lose in the third, but to come out and attack.
THE hockey GOD
bobby, three games in row with strong, wicked PK

Now that I had a chance to review the three goals against in period three (I was at the game) defending could have been more of an issue than it seemed at the time. Not sure to be honest. I want to say Hill might have allowed two not three. Quick’s last eight games with LA, his stats were awful.
GAA: 17/5 = 3.40
SV% = 75/92 = .815
Scary.
Management figured reasonably imo that Quick could create a Renaissance for himself and probably knew there was a decent chance it would not happen but took a chance on it just the same. I’ll leave it to the real experts to decide how soft that third period actually was.
This game:
GAA: 3.0
SV%: 25/28 = .893
Not great.
Pistol Pete
Last five games with LA that was, not eight.
This season including the game in Vegas:
GAA: 3.50
SV%: .876
Not good. We knew this it’s just that was/is a renaissance possible?
Cody
Stats are averages. You have eyes. Judge the situations. First game for a new team after your first ever trade in a 15year career the game after the guy you’re trying to overtake has the best game of his career because you showed up. First two periods you couldn’t ask for more. First goal was on the dman for skating across the goalie as the shot came. Then the nerves set in. Dude is human. Why whine so hard about 3 goals against, the same amount given up by Hill last game? A couple of those had a stink on them too. What matters is winning the game and he got a gamesaver at the end and battled it out. Quit trying to see the bad in everything.
Pistol Pete
I admit based on his stats this year I was expecting the floodgates to open after not allowing a goal in the first two periods. Of course I’ll defer to Cassidy who will always be a far better judge than I can ever hope to be. All goals were good per him. The Quick potential renaissance lives on. Let’s see what he can do on the road! I like having him in the room and with NcNabb and Martinez playing in front of him. That goes way back.
TS
Pp, the team let down their guard, allowed the Canadiens back in. If we had been pressing/ defending like we did 1st 2 periods, we would have won a pretty easy game. Complacency, maybe. Like Cassidy says, the guys need to start putting 60 competitive minutes together.
stats
love the hitting and physical play of Cotter. He just runs right over big guys, even when he is carrying the puck. sort of a straightline forward version of the Peter Forsberg reverse hit.
Edmundson is one of the biggest guys in the league, 6’5 and 221, and Cotter just ran him over.
TS
Stats, he’s a STEAMROLLER!! LOVE THE GUY’S NO- FEAR ATTITUDE!! CARRIER 2.0!!

Nice to see Dorofeyev recalled to the VGK. My top forward prospect. 45 goals in 119 AHL games, an NHL 82 game pace of 31. Turning 23 in October. Listed on the roster @ 194 lbs. vs. 176 at Elite Prospects.

Let’s see some mentoring from fellow Russian Ivan Barbashev.

That scoring pass from behind the goal line from Blueger to Theodore is exactly what you want from a 4th line center. Fast skater excellent movement. Very intelligent hockey player. English is excellent. Also speaks his native Latvian, Russian and French.

Good stick I should have added.
