GAME 1 – EDMONTON OILERS 4 VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2 (EDM 1-0)

Recap: The Golden Knights were looking to get off to a good start to the second round of the playoffs with a victory at home over the Edmonton Oilers. Vegas was awarded an early four-minute power play and immediately took advantage. Captain Mark Stone opened the scoring for Vegas with his third goal of the postseason. Stone added his fourth later in the frame to give the Golden Knights a two goal edge. Late in the period the Oilers scored to cut VGK’s lead to 2-1.

Vegas committed multiple penalties in the middle period but their penalty kill units forced Edmonton to come up empty. Vegas held their 2-1 edge after 40 minutes.

The Oilers evened the score 0:57 seconds into the final frame. Later in the period Edmonton took the lead and extended it with under five minutes to play. The Golden Knights shockingly dropped Game 1 after leading the majority of the way.

The Golden Knights trail the series 1-0 after falling to the Oilers 4-2 in Game 1. Next game is scheduled for Thursday night. Puck drop for Game 1 is scheduled for 630PM PT(Recap by Jason)

Analysis: The Golden Knights looked like they had all the answers for what the Oilers offered in the 1st period. They got on the PP and buried one quickly, the top line was getting out in transition consistently against EDM’s top line, and the depth were generating enough to feel good. Then, the 1st period ended and it all ground to a complete halt. Edmonton’s top line scored another one then their depth made life quite difficult on VGK. The better team over 60 minutes won this game, and it wasn’t the good guys. VGK have some soul searching to do before Game 2, because this performance was far from enough to win 4 of the next 6.(Recap by Ken)

As Pietrangelo goes so goes VGK…….
Winning 4 out of the next 6 without their most important player, not likely.

  2. Jose

Great start for Vegas and Stone was awesome but that was a superb performance by the Oilers. You couldn’t play a game one road game any better than they did? Vegas had one even strength shot on net in the final 40 minutes.

  3. DeezNutz

Vegas just get absolutely MAN HANDLED for 45 minutes straight with no lube and no breather. Series will be over real quick if that’s all they got.

  4. Frank

1st period…. Really good. 2nd and 3rd…. Not so much. Need to get way more shots on pickard cause he’s vulnerable. Hill outstanding for 2 periods…. The third not so much…. And there is the difference in the game…. They beat us two out of three periods.

  5. Pistol Pete

Jumping out ahead 2-0 and four unanswered goals against is not a good start to the series. As has been discussed earlier in the season this is a deeper better defending EDM than the 2023 version. Can’t go up there down two.

    • Red Baron

      The loss is Stone’s fault.

His two quick goals had the Knights thinking the game was a cakewalk,
so they went to sleep for the rest of the game.

  6. Like I have been saying all year it was important this team won the division. Otherwise they would be eliminated in the first round. They took a step up in class and got embarrassed for 2 and a half periods. I was at the game and it was a horror show. This team maybe wins a game. What’s worse were stuck with this team and it’s only going to get worse. Coach was right they are just better than us it was obvious.

    • DeezNutz

I’ve been saying for 2 seasons now this team is pretty much stuck in mediocrity until the Stone and Petro’s contracts expire in 2 years. That’s not a jab at the GM and team that’s the unfortunate truth for any team signing big superstar contracts we all knew these contracts would handcuff us in the final 2-3 seasons but guess what? We also won a mother fucking Stanley cup so I wouldn’t change it for one bit those contracts were absolutely necessary to get the job done. My only fear is that we will likely waste a few seasons of peak Jack Eichel before we can re-tool and move forward with some youth, speed and scoring talent. I think Pastrnak or Rantanen (too late now) would have been perfect for this team but with the bullshit cap we just can’t make it work. Only reason the cap exists is to keep the poor communist Canadian teams afloat because no professional athlete wants to play in a socialist shit hole.

      • ulfy

@DeeNutz I’d let this slide but keep your anti-Canadian sentiments to yourself in your basement. But RE: the cap, guess again. Vegas ranks #18 in most profitable teams while the Oilers are #7. The worst earning teams are Florida (last cup winners even), Columbus, Buffalo and Utah/Arizona. Aside from supplying teams like Vegas with 50% of your players, Canada is consistently ranked higher than the US for life expectancy, quality of life, safety…all the major factors. Unless you’re one of the 1% that is scamming the rest of the population like your boy Trump is.

        • TS

Ulfy, despite Trump’s followers accepting his hate and brutatity, a huge swath of America detests the Corrupt One as much as Canada does
.Canada is( or WAS). our friendliest, most supportive ally, and the way he has TARGETED our friends from Canada is absolutely Anti- American, provocative, condenscending, destructive in so many ways. As a friend to Canada, i want to express my disgust at the entire Trump debacle, and apologize on behalf of Anericans who detest him as much as YOU do..We are reeling from his Chainsaw Massacre of our very Government, his targeted attacks on Dems everywhere.
Shock and pain, brutality IS the reason, and it is sickening.
Don’t give up, Trump.will be gone in a nano- second of History. Thank God.

        • knights fan in minny

          fuck off ulfy

        • condie

Leave Trump out of this, cause we could say just as much about your politicians who stole money from canadiens just like Biden did to America. . Stay on the hockey a subject you know about. Yes I will agree with you we don’t keep canadian teams afloat, Now that Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg and of course Edmonton are winning the fans are coming back big time. Great to see. Our problem is everyone says how great our defense is, they are not and if they don’t get it together Edmonton will win in four straight. Aside from a couple of our defensemen who stay at home and try to handle business. We saw what how one of our defenseman can’t stay with the Edmonton players he get’s beat consistently. happened several times in the last series. He needs to stop worrying about scoring and play defense. Any defenseman can play the point on a power play. I would rather see hannifin or saad play the point because of their speed.

      • Mister Mister

Let’s be honest, Vegas won a Stanley cup because Berman gave them a Stanley Cup. I remember the draft and the the bullsh*t. You don’t deserve to be proud of your cup. You did not earn it.

        • knights fan in minny

          fuck you stupid pistur pistur

        • VGK fan

Wait didn’t Seattle receive the same benefits as Vegas did?

        • The hockey God

his name isn’t BERMAN, it’s Gary, panty hose, Bettman. And Bettman didn’t make the picks the VGK FO did. And SEattle had the same rules, look at them. Try again , next time Near MIss.

  7. Ironmanfgo

You can’t expect a team that starts Keegan Kolesar on the second line, and finishes with Tanner Pearson on the first, to win a playoff series.
And what was up with the neutral zone? Vegas couldn’t possess the puck, but when they dumped it in, they couldn’t forecheck to get in back, the Oilers exited the zone with ease and skated right into the offense zone.
Here’s a good tip as well. Don’t ice the puck, because their big guns come right back out for the O zone face off and win nearly all of them.

    • Jim

exactly right about 55 and Pearson. they don’t belong on a top six line, and it is a farce that Boehlke gave 55 a star when he totally dragged down that Hertl line to zero offensive threat.

the Vgk played one good period, and then just collapsed in the last 2 periods..

1 friggin shot in the 2nd, and 3 goals allowed in the 3rd.

      • Watch the game again. Kolesar was one of the only players consistently holding the puck in the offensive zone. He’s constantly in front of the goal. He’s one of the few guys who forechecked. He’s not going to score a ton of goals, that’s not his game. He played his game very well last night, the rest of his linemates did not.

        • Richie-Rich

I agree, Kolesar did what he is supposed to do and did it very well. The problem was that he belongs on that 4th line with Roy and Pearson.

  8. knights fan in minny

    stormy is back

  9. JB

Total domination by oilers in 2nd & 3rd. But still, we were leading or in the game until late. The Knights have faced this before, playing awful and going down by a game, in a playoff series. We win game two and right back in it. Don’t write us out yet!

  10. culfy

BTW what’s with the huge number of fair-weather fans that were filing out of the arena after the Oilers’ 4th goal and 2 minutes left? Was there a show on somewhere? Lord help the GKs when they go through a rebuilding season like everyone does. Maybe a candidate to move.

  11. arnold rothstein

Coach has to dig in deep into his magic bag of tricks or 1- this series will be over before it starts 2- some coaching staff members will be in unemployment line sooner than they think.

VGK missed no. 16 on PP as his replacement just didn’t get job done.

LA KINGS fired their architect of several winning seasons. Rob Blake. Hill still holds coaching position, for now. No one is untouchable in this league !

The big odds on favoring the VGK in opening game was a big tell in this game showing the oddsmakers don’t know hockey in this town. They are repeatedly wrong at key situational moments.

  12. TS

Pietrangelo out yet again for undisclosed ilness…this has cocome a pattern with him— i wonder is it’s his child who is the ill one, as he has dealt with that for some time. Fingers crossed neither is ill enough to keep him off- ice. The team is NOT going to move on w/o him. We MUST stop the offensive pushes by these Oilers, or the series will be short. Complain about his age, his occasional blunders, but his EXPERIENCE is the key. Gotta have him back, and SOON, or ot’s already over

  13. Tim

I’m not here to criticize the Knights but first period ok then I watch the second period and one shot in 20 minutes is not what I call the mark of a Stanley Cup contender, After that debacle it was time to switch to something a little more entertaining. I guess the third period wasn’t much better. I get it your die hard fans but you all know I’m a baseball guy and in contrast yesterday my Guardians played a double header. First game we lose 10-9 second game we win 9 – 1 now win or lose I’m ok as long as it’s entertaining which those two games were. Then I watch the Knights and absolutely no entertainment value. I get it pavel and Petro didn’t p[lay but the Jets and Stars were missing two stars and they still won so I’m not much into excuses. As Al Davis used to say is Just Win and forget all the excuses.

    • The hockey God

Tim thinks watching grass grow, or cactus, is fun.

      • Tim

THG, Watching the Knights last night was painful but diehard fans will defend the there team and that’s a good thing. I remember back in the day when the NBA finals were a delayed telecast not live. I remember football was a minor sport to baseball and the first world championship not called the Super Bowl at the time didn’t sell out. So they learned there lesson people like excitement and basket ball and football went big time. Hockey is stuck and the only way to change it is more scoring and the only way to do that is widen the goal. Put some excitement in the game but the purist will prefer to keep it the same way and really not grow the product.

        • The hockey God

the nearly every night full capacity crowds say otherwise, but I agree that it needs a change, bigger goal ? No. BIgGER ICE RINKS ! YES. International play ! The players today are bigger , faster, more skilled than ever before. Let them shine on wider ice ! But no, the owners don’t want to lose seats.

Now get back to your watching the grass. Hey look there is a crabgrass trying to get a hold.

  14. ThG

Butch is losing the energy game here, matching up his top offensive players trying to play catch up with oilers top offensive pair is not a good thing for VGK scoring opportunities. That is why they got only one shot, in period two, and six in period three. Their depth players have to step up and allow VGK O players some energy to go on O. We’ll see if Cassidy can figure out a way to bring O zone energy back.

  15. ThG

Protests erupt in China after furious workers demand back pay as Trump’s tariffs on imports jolt economy..

China, instead of paying the tariffs has decided to shutter it’s economy in protest. The Chicom thug government won’t stand for protests too long, something has to give. It’s either the people or leadership. In the past, leadership has stomped on protestors, killing them. China owns this. They manipulate their currency for gains on trade prices, they also use child, prison, and minority group labor paying them relatively nothing. They also rule Hong Kong with an iron thumb.

How much longer will this last ? Meeting in Europe underway with Swiss and Chinese delegates.

In long run tariffs have cost the average tax paying American over $100,000 in last 20 years. That is enough for down payment on house, or college education. Time to end unfair taxation on American middle class.

  16. The hockey God

Bruce Cassidy not happy with ice, bad ice, soft ice, bouncing pucks in post game comments!! Did T mobile crew muck up the ice on purpose in attempt to slow down the faster oilers ?? It’s been known to happen before !

    Round 2 Game 1 Analysis

    VGK 2, EDM 4

Bottom line: Edmonton rolled 4 productive offensive and defensive lines. The VGK rolled 1 offensive line the entire game.

The bottom 9 need to actually step it up. They were completely invisible last night. When you hang Hill out to dry he’s not even a 50-50 goaltender, it’s more like 20-80. The team played rock solid defense in period 2, but the trade off was a single shot on goal and a very poor period 3.

Expect Cassidy to shake up the lines going into game 2. The bottom 9 needs help and unfortunately we have no idea when Dorofeyev, the top goal scorer this season, will be returning. Expect Karlsson to be back on line 3 with Smith in Game 2 and someone like either Howden or Oloffsson to replace him on the top line. Korczak is great defensively but the VGK could use that offensive punch and pinching that Pietrangelo provides on offense.

Guys who need to step it up? Barbashev for sure. He’s been quiet for too long. He had 1 goal and 1 assist in round 1 and is a -6 overall. This is pretty putrid for a guy who had 23G and 28A and a +26 during the season. There’s no reserve forward who is capable of replacing the production that he has provided this season. Maybe a switch back to the top line is in order.

This isn’t the first time in the playoffs where we have seen this great 16 minutes in period 1 evaporate into nothingness. It happened to them during the Minnesota series as well. A totally dominant start imploding into a collapse.

On a positive note. Edmonton didn’t look near as good an opponent as the Wild. This team has the talent and the coaching. The series is far from being out of hand. Expect a bounce back victory on Thursday.

  18. ID10T w/ a Ba1100n

Make sure you have a towel and don’t panic. Vegas will either get up, learn, and play their game, or they won’t. If they lose the series, then I get to watch the playoffs and Cup Final without edge of my seat, butthole puckered, heart-attack stress. If they get to their game like they did in ’23, then I get to enjoy the playoffs and maybe the Cup final with edge of my seat, butthole puckered, heart-attack stress. Either way, guess what, I am going to be a Vegas Golden Knight fan next season.

  19. PJT

The game unraveled for Vegas after Draisaitl’s fluky goal—an awkward bounce that slipped past Hill when he misplayed it trying to make a routine stop. It was a split-second lapse, the kind that happens in fast-paced games, but unfortunately, it seemed to shake Hill’s confidence. From that point on, every puck that beat him felt stoppable—not just by Hill, but arguably by any NHL-level goalie. This isn’t a knock on Hill; any goaltender who lets in a soft goal like that can struggle to mentally reset.

With hindsight, it’s clear we should’ve made a goalie change right after that goal—not as a punishment, but as a strategic move. Sometimes a short break is all a goalie needs to reset, regroup, and possibly re-enter the game stronger. Confidence is everything in net, and when it’s rattled, the ripple effect can be costly. This isn’t personal—it happens to the best. Remember Fleury’s infamous giveaway in the playoffs? These moments are part of the game.

Going forward, we need to acknowledge how critical goalie psychology is. Making a timely change doesn’t mean giving up on your starter—it means giving your team the best chance to win.

Learn from this and be better. Go Knights Go!

  20. Richie-Rich

    For Ken,

Cassidy confirmed that there were 5 icings on the Oilers that were called off. I can see one or maybe even two if they are questionable, but 5? Also, in the 3rd period Smith appeared to easily reach the red line and flipped the puck high and deep into the Oiler zone that was called icing. Did you see that one?

    • The hockey God

certainly changed complexion of game, you know they are canadian lines men and refs, they cheat on faceoffs too. Maybe they will go to automatic robot face offs like they are doing with balls and strikes in baseball. Bettman crowds up the ice with too many officials and refs. They should move them off ice.

  21. The last thing I wanted to be was right about the lines heading into last nights game, but sadly I was.

Practice however today saw the light at the end of the tunnel I had been hoping and searching for, now all that needs to be done is the positive result we all are seeking tomorrow night.

    Go Knights Go!!

    • Personally ‘the last thing’ I want to see or hear is someone saying ‘I told you so’, it’s a really annoying comment no matter what it relates to, however I must say in this case you happened to be correct, and I am also hoping for better things tonight.
