VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 5 DETROIT RED WINGS 3 (34-23-7, 75 PTS)

Recap: The Golden Knights were looking to snap their four-game losing streak with a win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings. Pavel Dorofeyev opened the scoring for Vegas midway through the 1st period. Five minutes later, Jonathan Marchessault scored his 33rd goal of the season giving the Golden Knights a 2-0 advantage. With less than 30 seconds to go in the frame, Detroit cut Vegas’ lead in half.

Vegas outshot Detroit 12 to 6 in the middle frame but neither team could find the back of the net. The score remained 2-1 after 40 minutes of action.

The Golden Knights committed a costly hooking penalty less than a minute into the final frame which the Red Wings took advantage of. Detroit found the equalizer before their power play expired to even the score 2-2. Brayden McNabb regained Vegas’ lead with his third goal of 2023-24. However, seconds later the Red Wings tied the game 3-3. With under three minutes remaining, Vegas’ leading goal scorer added his second and third of the game to elevate his team to a late 5-3 victory.

The Golden Knights record improves to 34-23-7 defeating the Red Wings in Las Vegas. Vegas will try for back-to-back wins on Tuesday night in Seattle. Puck drop against the Kraken is scheduled for 7 PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: Need big goals? Call Jonathan Marchessault. Vegas was the much more active team in this game they just weren’t quite sharp in the offensive end. Fortunately, they were able to recover from blowing the two-goal lead with a good push back and then keep going even after allowing another game-tying goal. (Analysis by Ken)

SHOTS! Finally out shot an opponent. Great to see Hannifin getting some assist and Marchy getting a hattrick,.sign him now.

    • TS

      Earl, Marchy was listening!!

      • Earl the Replanted Transplant

It was good to see him taking shots; anyone correct me if I am wrong, but I remember several times where he (and others) hesitated and didn’t shoot. 100% of shots not taken don’t go in. I give credit to Pav for taking that shot instead of passing, and it opened the door. I can’t help but think that up until the trade deadline some players, including Marchy, were wondering if they would still be a Vegas Golden Knight, and if that doubt crept into their game.

        • Earl

Addendum, when I mention players not shooting it was before the Deteoit game.

        • TS

I’ll bet more than a few guys have been sweating it out. Starters haven’t been safe. No one is safe when they are losing games. I just hope the bleeding is over, and we’ll win a few… maybe make the Playoffs..

Finally ended the losing streak. Now off to Seattle. VGK needs to continue to come out of the gate, hot. They’re not that good at playing catch up.

  3. Pistol Pete

Nice to have Eichel the puck mover and controller back. Difference maker.

Can’t wait for this guy. VGK has never had a guy this hard to contain. Heavy and strong. Eiichel/Hertl/Karlsson/Roy: depth down the middle.

  4. Pistol Pete

Hanifin is a massive upgrade over the 36 year-old Alec Martinez. Very shrewd deadline move that took everybody by surprise and is absolutely correct.

  5. The positives…firstly that we didnt lose 3 players within a 4 minute span….Whitecloud was limping after the game….Eichel took a spill on the game winner but came back….Roy tripped over Kolesar and looked really hurt but came back next shift….Marchy…Eichel…Hanafin an instant upgrade on defense/offense….Hague defensively and surprisingly offensively….the negatives pretty much everything else…shot advantage was very misleading in my opinion…were not many Grade a’s thru 2…third period was horrendous until Marchy…plenty of skating space for the wings…we had no offensive rushes or thrusts into their end of the ice…and dont even get me started on every lost faceoff anywhere on the ice surface…having said that…Hanifin and Eichel had 1 more game under their belt and onto seatlle for a little payback from the ass thumping of the Winter Classic!!

    • TS

      Looked bad for Roy
. Huge fall. Hope he doesn’t have lasting problems..

  6. Pistol Pete

How are we liking the over half a point a game (2 G/5 A in 13 games) Brendan Brisson? -4 which suggests a bit of a defensive liability but one has to like his compete and being in the play performance. We don’t know what McCrimmon’s 2024-25 cap management plan is but it’s possible Brisson will need to slot in for somebody who can’t be extended, therefore the more games this season the better for the rookie.

  7. Pistol Pete

With the recent losses this has become an increasingly tough ask but because I’m stubborn and a bit prideful I’m sticking (for now) with an objective I set some number of games following the AS break:

    Goal: 46-27-9 (101 pts)
    Need: 12-4-2

Need for 95 pts (assumed benchmark to win a wild card berth):

    NSH: 9-8-0
    VGK: 10-8-0

    SEA: 14-4-0
    CGY: 14-4-0
    STL: 14-5-0
    MIN: 14-5-0

Would the VGK prefer overtaking the Kings and face EDM or be a wild card and play VAN, DAL, WPG or COL?

  8. JB

We needed a win, period. Let’s hope this gets us going!

  9. Tim

Wasn’t easy but we pulled it out. Hanifin looked good I hope we sign long term not just a rental. It will take a little time to get everyone accumulated to playing together but we’ll be fine. I’m excited about Hertl another scorer we desperately needed. We have star power any kid who’s a Knights fan enjoy the moment because it’s not very often in any sport you have this much star power on one team.

a win the boys needed sweet little move by pavel noah was real good who were the ones. Who wanted marchy gone.hilly was okay except for that weak ass back hand

    • TS

Minny, it was disturbing to hear talk of trading Marchy
      . ” He’s past his prime
He’s too old to compete with younger guys. Time to trade him.” Trade the Conn Smythe winner, the player who outhustles, outmuscles, is fearless at net, scores virtually EVERY game, incl many game- changing goals. He inspires the best from others by his superb play…he’s a keeper until he retires, in my view!

      • knights fan in minny

hopefully he wont want a giant raise he does deserve one

It’s amazing what a team can do with a $100 Million payroll.

        • Jose

          GW North is back!!!!

          Thanks bitch!!!

          Bahahahahahahahahahahaha

Wait till next year when we enter the playoffs. We’re going to do it with a $140 million payroll.

          Bahahahahahahahahah

Hey fellow fans of the Vegas Golden Knights Stanley Cup champions. Do we want Leon Draisaitl in two years or wait for three years and get Connor McDavid?

Or option C leave those bitches for Edmonton. Our players actually back check and know how to win in the playoffs.

Personally, I’m gonna go with option C.

          Bahahahahahahahahahaha

It’s amazing that the VGK has an owner willing to pay and not hoard the profits. Maybe the owners in communist Canada could learn from Bill?

“This and that: There is no such thing as salary cap circumvention. It’s a conspiracy theory invention. The CBA, agreed upon by ownership and the players, sets out the rules by which the NHL and the salary cap system are governed. There are no loopholes. They rules are clear and must be followed. They can’t be skirted or whatever specious verb one wants to apply.

All teams must follow the rules in the same manner. What does vary, from club to club, are the resources managers have at their disposal as well as the skill of a team’s cap management staff.

Owners determine how much money they are willing to spend on their team. Cap managers look for opportunities and ways to use the CBA to their advantage.

There are no convenient injuries in the NHL. The league can and does ask for injury information on a regular basis. The use of Long Term Injury Relief is closely monitored.

Unfortunately no one has sustained more injuries than the Golden Knights in the past three seasons. The CBA stipulates a team can replace injured players but must be cap compliant when they come off LTIR. So, for Shea Theodore, his 38 games missed happened earlier in the season. Vegas had to make sure they had cap room for him to return. Mark Stone’s lacerated spleen happened later in the season. Stone’s return from an internal organ injury is an unknown but certainly it won’t be in the regular season. So Vegas, within the constraints of the CBA, acted accordingly in replacing its captain who suffered a dangerous injury.

NHL ownership is a competitive club of billionaires. They all want to win and are used to winning. They have legions of lawyers. They don’t let anyone get over on them. It just doesn’t happen.” – Gary Lawless

bad news- barely against borderline WC team, hope more players
    are not hurt.

  12. Jim

Marchy to the rescue…and Jack is back.

It was a good Knight because LA, Edm, St Louis, and Calgary all lost, and the Vgk won. That needs to continue, especially the Vgk need to beat Seattle and Calgary Tues and Thurs

They need to put space between themselves and the 4 chasers at 67, Blues, Wild, Flames, Kraken.

  13. knights fan in minny

    its crunch time

  14. A big win but doesn’t guarantee much unless they can keep it going. Sorry, but that’s the reality of the situation. Hopefully they have turned the corner and can continue on. They are far from out of the woods where the playoffs are concerned so a total team effort is essential if they want to continue on or it will be early golf season for all of them. It’s a little frustrating they are in this poor position as they are a very good team when they put their mind to it. For whatever reason they haven’t played up to their potential as often as necessary – and yes I am well aware of the injury situation but that is not an excuse and shouldn’t be as all teams experience it in one way or another. Cassidy never gives any of them the opportunity to give that excuse as he approaches it right up front. Here’s to keeping it going and a win Tuesday on the road.

    • ThG

from a players’ prospective you can’t use excuses, never, that is mindset you have to have.

however, from a fans’ prospective, and FO prospective, and any non player prospective you can’t ignore all the injuries, it’s over the top to say every team has injuries that VGK have had; that is not a fair statement or close to realty

Roy and Whitecloud took a tumble. No. 2 took a shot to his lower body on wings third goal; he was helped into the dressing room. That is not a good look at all. Hope he just took a shot to nerve, we’ll see if he’s all right and hopefully doesn’t go on IR. He’s a steady D man. But seems to be cursed with one injury after another after another. Pray that he is well.

PS libs thinking yelling, gaslighting, and campaigning during a ‘state of union’ speech is a good look, people with brains see a yelling, slurring demented old man who seeming is given a pass for being demented when hording documents, but is now OK when gaslighting. The hypocrisy on the left abounds, but we true Americans see through it all. And where did he get the funds to build a needless port in GAZA for a bunch of terrorist, american hating anti Jewish scumbags? Talk about pandering to his terrorist political base. Congress surely did not approve funds for a needless port. Egypt has a port of entry to this small area already. Talk about a waste of our tax dollars, that is something the demopedophile party is good at, and why we are in hole and continue to be for the last four year. Out of control never ending spending.

    Game 64 Analysis VGK 4, DET 3
    34-23-7 .586 +16 GF/GA

Division: The VGK remain in 4th place in the Pacific behind the Kings by winning percentage, but are tied with them with 75 points each. The Kings, however, have a game in hand.

Playoff Picture: The VGK remain in 8th place, 2nd Wild Card with 75 points. Nashville is in the 7th (1st Wild Card) with 77 points, but the VGK has a game in hand. The VGK could leap back into the 6th playoff spot by overtaking the Kings. CGY, SEA, STL, & MIN are all tied for 9th in the playoff picture (not in) with 67 points. Both CGY and SEA have a game in hand on the VGK.

For Pistol Pete: To get to 101 points the VGK will need to win 13 of the remaining 18 games. That’s a .722 winning percentage. Come on Man! I get that you are a positive thinker, but let’s be realistic.

12 of 18 would be a .667 winning percentage and would get the VGK to 99
11 of 18 would be a .611 winning percentage and would get the VGK to 97
10 of 18 would be a .555 winning percentage and would get the VGK to 95

I haven’t seen VGK play this well since early in the season. The skating and passing was much improved. More importantly they pick up a much needed 2 points and break the home losing streak. It’s been a while since I have been to a game in my season ticket seats (11-M-13 & 14).

The first 2 minutes of the game looked to be more of the same as we won the game opening face off only to be pressured and turned the puck over to the Red Wings on an errant pass up along the boards.

I believe that Dorofeyev, Hanifan and Mantha have made a huge difference. I actually think Martinez will either go LTIR for the season or be a healthy scratch. Both Hague and Whitecloud have had their minutes reduced. It could be an opportunity for Korczak and Cormier to help with the CAP next season. I like Hague’s size, but it doesn’t seem to be an advantage for him. Whitecloud may be playing injured.

The Roy/Kolesar collision was ugly and turned into a Detroit rush and goal. Will have to see if there are any long term effects.

Untimely penalties and sketchy goaltending made this game a lot closer than it should have been. This was one of those games that could have easily slipped away.

All of the talk about Marchy not being re-signed in the offseason needs to stop immediately. He’s got 2 or 3 good seasons left in him if he takes care of his body.

    Finally My 3 Stars!

    #3 – Dorofeyev
    #2 – Eichel
    #1 – Marchy

They said he had surgery and then an illness. I pray that he did not get a serious infection from the procedure (which is VERY plausible) and that he returns to good health.

  17. For a myriad of reasons we have seen the last of Martinez in a Golden Knights regular season uniform …possibility still exists in a playoff run but still probably unlikely…a good day of practice and further familiarization for the new guys will hopefully lead to crisper passing and breakouts…and to a power play unit that can be a positive and not a detriment!

    • TS

Larry, is that tidbit on Martinez just your opinion, or is he benched as of now?

  18. TS it’s just my personal opinion as to what I see is best for the team moving forward.
