Recap: The Golden Knights unbeaten record at home was on the line with the high-powered Carolina Hurricanes in town. Less than five minutes into the game Carolina took the opening lead. Later in the frame the Hurricanes doubled the score and took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Carolina scored their 3rd and 4th unanswered goals in the opening minutes of the middle period. The undefeated on home ice Golden Knights trailed 4-0 after 40 minutes of action.
Jack Eichel snapped the Hurricanes’ shutout in the final frame with his 5th goal of 2024-25. With minutes remaining Carolina iced the game with an empty net score. Ivan Barbashev netted a power play goal late.
The Golden Knights record drops to 9-4-2 falling 5-2 to the Hurricanes for their first home loss of the season. Vegas will look to bounce back on Wednesday night in Anaheim. Puck drop against the Ducks is scheduled for 7 PM. (Recap by Jason)
Analysis: Absolute train wreck from the Golden Knights. Could not do much of any thing right and it manifested in a butt whipping by a very good opponent. So far, this team just does not look the same without Mark Stone. They have a lot of figuring out to do if he’s going to be out for any stretch of time. Hopefully the dads can help them out on this upcoming trip. (Analysis by Ken)

VGK are clearly frustrated with their own performance tonight. There have been more angry stick slams into the boards tonight than the rest of the home schedule combined.

Caroline came to play and win – Vegas wondered why they were even there. Hill was pathetic and the balance of the team joined him. Certainly nothing positive despite what the announcers tried to relay otherwise. Can’t win them all the last couple of games hopefully reminds them what’s necessary to win
TS
Hill is one of the ” stars”? Is that a joke?? Gotta be a joke…
I couldn’t watch this trainwreck tonight!
Richie-Rich
I agree, Hill did not deserve star. His season has been rather pedestrian so far this season. It’s quite apparent that without the Captain that this team isn’t top tier. There’s just no substitute for him on that top line. By the way, did anyone see Burns toss Dorofeyev to the ice like a rag doll in the Canes OZ?
My big take away from this game is that the team lacks the ability to take the physicality to the next level when challenged. The CANES physical play and constant pressure was relentless in that first period and it showed in shots on goal, offensive zone time and goals scored (4).
I believe a timeout would have been very appropriate for Cassidy to call after that 3rd goal giveaway by Theodore.
TS
RR, agreed on the lack of agressive physical play— i’ve felt that since Reaves was traded. We play weaker teams out West, then are shocked when we get pummeled by the Beasts in the REST of the league! As most agree, Kolesar is NO fighter(boxing lessons might help). We have big bodies, so why don’t we USE them? Intimidation is a real thing! Maroon is one guy who even intimidates the fans! I watch him and cringe when he makes contact.
The boys need to pack on some extra pads and stop being patsies for other teams!

Though Eichel has to close a 16 point gap to become a career point a game player he is one here (183 pts in 179 games).
Pistol Pete
And Stone is nearly one since coming here (277 pts in 287 games).
In Vegas:
Stone: +71 (287 games)
Eichel: +41 (179 games)
Richie-Rich
Divide Stone’s in half because he only plays half seasons.

Kings lost too and we still have two games in hand. I know. Too early to sweat the standings lol. Point is it’s a long season and even a make the playoffs record entails losing plenty of games along the way. No point in sweating any one loss per se. One night a team appears to come to play and the other does not. You just don’t have the level to win every game. Let the coach figure out the game to game because we can’t.

Carolina is probably a top five team in the league . It showed as we were out-classed in that first period. Now our homer broadcast crew can stop talking about the win streak at home. Two teams on the road we should beat coming up. If we don’t then I will start to worry!
ThG
Can’t win them all, especially when you leave your goalie out to dry . Not Hill’s fault, learn to watch the game.
“Some of our veteran guys didn’t have the ‘A’ game in terms of transition and execution. I thought they were fumbling some pucks,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “So they could have been better and would have needed to be better tonight. But again, I think it was a team loss, to be honest with you.”
Looking at you no. 27.
The hockey God
yep , two deflections, one giveaway, and rebound by player that Roy left go.
Richie-Rich
Just think how bad this score would have been if Hague was in the lineup.
NAM
Can’t stand the “not Hills fault” excuse. Is it all his fault? NO far from it, this team shit the bed, but if you are a fucking goalie you are the last line of defense. You can either stop shot to elevate the defense or absolutely provide nothing for the defense that is struggling. If your goalie is only ever as good as the defense plays in front of him then you need to find a new goalie. The guy needs to find a way to make some saves and help the team out. Schmid didn’t seem to have that problem. Hill let in 4 goals in less than a period and a half, but not his fault. He gets a pass.
DMR
YES, totally agree.
ThG
D in front of you shouldn’t put goalie in position to be “last line of defense”, maybe one of the first four goals was stoppable , the one in five hole on deflection- but it was a deflection and a screen by goal scorer ROBINSON who was left in front of net undefended. No. 15 left him and no. 7 didn’t pick him up, both were at fault for some of these goals, they don’t seem to partner well together in this game. The other shots were not stoppable. Go back and watch the replays.
On second goal Hill saved the shot, Roy was so far away from his man and rebound was there. Can’t ask much more from your goalie when KotKeinamen is left wide open in front of your net.
Third goal, no. 27 coughs up puck, Canes player again in front of net with no one. Shot is unstoppable.
Fourth goal was faceoff lost, another deflection. Hard to stop a puck that is ping ponging around.
Petro, Theo and Roy all -3s in game.
TS
Nam, one of the goals glided through Hill’s super-sized gap between his legs! Even I know ya gotta close that gap, already!
Richie-Rich
Theodore was definitely too complacent during that power play. He never anticipated a short handed forecheck like that. Definitely a goals against #27, but it will show up on Hill’s stat sheet.
Question: When was the last time Hill stopped a breakaway 1 on 1? This should be a goalie statistic.
The hockey God
he stopped a few in last three games, there were no breakaways leading to goals in this game; so what’s your point ?
a better question is how many times has VGK allowed breakaways, and why ?
Richie-Rich
The Theodore turnover happened quickly and he was not prepared in net. Whenever the puck is in his zone, the goal tender should always be alert and ready for this sort of stuff to happen. That shorty was 1 on 1. I am not expecting perfection, but someone needs to be tracking this goal tender statistic. The question I am posing has nothing to do with the D in front of the goaltender at all. I would just like to know how many is being stopped. That was a turnover and a point blank shot. Not a breakaway, but I would include it in the same statistical category. MAKE GOAL TENDING GREAT AGAIN.
ThG
the shot was unstoppable
Larry
As before I agree with you about Hill…the blame is not layed at his feet…deflections are like footballs that are fumbled as they can go in myriad directions… point blank snipes by goal scorers are just that…they are paid to score goals from prime goal scoring spots…the ‘funny’ thing about this game is if Howden had scored on his semi breakaway the whole game could have been different!
Larry
THG…. Agreed and agreed…as I’ve stated innumerable times Hill is not to blame!

At this point the VGK are in the mix as one of the B teams (injuries and what ifs aside). The A teams play heavier and faster, and have above average goaltending (in some cases way above). We know who the A teams are. Will some A teams become B teams and will some B teams become A teams? Probably yes. Meanwhile, perhaps more attention to the defensive parts of the game are in order for the VGK? Individual stats are nice, and goals will come, but things need to tighten up asap.
Frank
Hill is not having a great year…. 46th in goals against at 3.41 and 48th in save percentage at .875… Whether you like it or not, those are the stats. When Adin starts we need to score at least 4 to win (on average). Yes, some of the blame is on the defense, but that does not absolve hill of blame either. Case in point. Goal #1 last night… Poor stick positioning and shot goes in 5 hole. That’s a shot that needs to be stopped. Goal #2… Nothing much he could have done better. Goal #3… Would like to see a save there, but being a quick play off turnover, I’ll give him benefit of the doubt. Goal #4…. Deflection but also look at positioning. Thought Schmid fairly well after hill got the boot. There is no denying Hill has struggled this year, and the latter half of last season as well.
ThG
Funny thing Frank, is stats don’t lie. Going into season the Defense was supposed to be the strong point. Turns out the pundits have been wrong so far.
