VGK’s Shot Type Selection Huge Reason For Offensive Success

(Photo Credit: SinBin.vegas Photographer Brandon Andreasen)

This year the Golden Knights are in the top five in wins, points percentage, regulation wins, fewest regulation losses, goals scored, and goals scored per game. Vegas is having so much success offensively because of their high shooting percentage through 39 games. So, just how are all of those shots going in? And what type of shot are the Golden Knights slinging at opposing goaltenders?

VGK’s Goals By Shot Type (Shooting Percentage)

  • Goals Scored: 138 (11.6%)
  • Wrist Shot: 65 (11.7%)
  • Snap Shot: 33 (11.2%)
  • Backhand: 14 (13.3%)
  • Tip In: 12 (16.9%)
  • Slap Shot: 10 (7.5%)
  • Deflection: 2 (13.3%)
  • Wraparound: 2 (28.6%)

Vegas has scored the 5th most goals this season with 138 goals, 3.54 goals scored per game. Their success rate can be attributed to improving their accuracy and waiting for quality chances. The one shot the Golden Knights rely on the most is obviously the wrist shot. It’s by far and away the most attempted and most accurate attempt in hockey.

As a team, the Golden Knights have taken 557 wrist shots and have the 5th highest wrist shot percentage (11.7%) in the league. No surprise, Jack Eichel has let 62 wrist shots rip this season and six have struck an opponents’ nets. However, Ivan Barbashev and Brett Howden lead Vegas with 9 successful wrist shots a piece.

VGK’s Shot Selection Total

  • Wrist Shot: 557
  • Snapshot: 294
  • Slapshot: 134
  • Backhand Shot: 105
  • Tip In: 71
  • Wraparound: 7

One statistic you can simply glance at and quickly understand why Vegas is on a roll is the amount of snap shots taken. It’s a clear picture of how often the Golden Knights are in front of opponents’ nets causing havoc and creating chances. A snap shot usually comes off a rebound, up close, or on a breakaway. Most NHL’ers prefer using their slap or wrist shot from further distances. The Golden Knights’ heavy volume of snap shots highlights their net-front presence and the heavy pressure they put on defenders.

Along with wrist shot goals, Barbashev leads with four snap shot scores. Pavel Dorofeyev, Victor Olofsson, Tanner Pearson, and Mark Stone are all one behind with three. Howden stands alone with four backhand goals and tied with one wraparound goal.

VGK Goal Leaders By Shot Type

  • Backhand: Brett Howden (4)
  • Snap Shot: Ivan Barbashev (4)
  • Wrist Shot: Barbashev, Howden (4)
  • Slapshot: Pavel Dorofeyev (3)
  • Tip In: Mark Stone (2)
  • Deflection: Mark Stone (1)
  • Wraparound: Nic Hague, Howden (1)

As for Stone, he leads with goals typically around the net. The captain has two tip-in goals and one deflection. Stone earns those types of greasy goals because he’s a big body to clear out and causes enough traffic to deflect, screen, or tip a puck.

Like all teams, the Golden Knights will continue to have most of their success with wrist shots. It’s the most accurate, not to mention it’s the prettiest of all shots. Although, Vegas has seen the puck go in several ways using their balanced shot selection. Vegas is in the middle of the pack in most shot categories but are among the leaders in success.

this shot that shot throw it on net you never know

  2. JB

Goals come in the weirdest ways, once you get the puck on net.

    • Pistol Pete

That is true and as I mentioned in the last thread I like maintaining possession by cycling low to high. There is a variety of ways the puck can find the back of the net by way of a D from the point.

Can’t wait til Barbie comes back.

Trevor Connelly finished the World Juniors with 1 G/3 A in seven games. Two shots no points (+1) in the final vs. Finland.

What a luxury to have so many players that can play on any line.

I gotta go to one of those practices in Summerlin……

      • TS

Emmanuel, Practice is usually @ 11am..just call the arena early am to see if practice is that day. They last an hour. An inside look at Cassidy’ s mindset, and a fun look at the boys and their interactions with one another…

        • Emmanuel

Thx, I retired 5/30 havent had time to go will most certainly go ASAP.

          • Congrats on your retirement on May 30… wouldn’t that have given you ample time to make it out to your first practice??

Yo can also check Golden Knights twitter as they will update practice times and availability… and while you are there try the food upstairs at Mackenzie River… the food is really good… and no I am not an employee there lol

          • TS

Canada , the failed socialist state, is in mourning ! Their hockey team lost ! You can hear the wailing across the Great Lakes, from the Manitoba plains to the British Columbia seas. From Nova Scotia to PEO to Newfoundland to Yukeon to Letterkenny to Trailer Park Boys ( Team USA wins gold (making AMERICA GREAT AGAIN (in hockey)), and Trudeau the lib tard idiot , once black faced hypocrite neoFascist scum, RESIGNS ! Opening the door to becoming USA 51st state or territory. With Greenland on the board, it looks like game of RISK. With USA red pieces taking all of NORTH AMERICA ! The liberals are tearing the hair out. They can’t stand it. They are spiraling out of control. Speaking of SHOT BJ likes a shot to the head. The evil fuck still can’t live down his outrageous, mentally deranged posts here on this board. And sick twister ranter supports this human scumbag. Takes one to know one, I guess. As usual we have nothing of note here in comment section, as some posters await the next unheralded release of pervert Jack.

  8. The hockey God

Some of the low brow, low IQ posters here (you know who you are) thought Ken was talking about:

Shots to Order at a Bar

    Tequila Shot

    Vodka Shot

    Jägerbomb

    Kamikaze

    Lemon Drop

    B-52

    Irish Car Bomb

    Sambuca Shot

    Fireball Shot

  9. Tim

Annex Canada and purchase Greenland nothing like thinking big. Canadians aren’t all against the idea which is interesting. Like Trump or not it’s going to be one hell of a ride.

    • Tim just wondering and interested to know where you got the idea that Canadians aren’t all against the idea of annexing.

      • Bruce

Ya Tim, no offense, my friend, but that’s a really stupid thing to say. Not even close to the truth. Literally the exact opposite. I am Canadian, 57 years old, have had a wonderful life and continue to and not once did I want to be American. I like Americans very much, but I am Canadian. I don’t want Canada to become the 51st state more than you would want the United States to become the 11th province.

I live in Canada, work in Canada, spent Christmas and holidays with families and friends, and have dozens of work associates. I literally don’t know one single Canadian that wants to give up their sovereignty.

        • ThG

Hey leave Tim alone, there were quite a few social media posts saying Canadians were for it ! If you PEOPLE don’t walk around with your head up your butt all time you would know what’s really going on in the world.

          • Thg – Don’t tell me you believe all the social media BS. I addressed my question to Tim not to start an argument just curious so I would suggest you just leave it at that and not respond with your usual head up the butt garbage, or better yet not respond at all. I believe it’s referred to as mine your own business.

        • Tim

Bruce as strange as it sounds there are Canadians who wouldn’t mind the merger for economic reasons. I never thought the Berlin Wall would fall but it did.

          • Jose

Tim, the worst thing ever exported to Toronto from Cleveland was Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins running the the Toronto Blue Jays. Can we give them back to Cleveland please?

      • ThG

Hey butt head, Bruce responded too. So I wasn’t talking to you. I run into a lot of people also, as well as social media. Who think it’s a good idea. Maybe if you got out of your basement once a year you’d know what is going on in the real world.

        • In either case whoever you were responding to the same applies – keep your nose out of others business. “A lot of people as well” obviously not Canadians – just more of your BS. Talk about a basement dweller – you apparently live in one.

  10. I was a big Rangers fan growing up in the late 60’s to mid 80’s…in the late 70’s the Rangers acquired one of the biggest defensemen at that time in a trade with the old Colorado team…his name was Barry Beck and he had a howitzer of a shot from the blue line…but for whatever reason he was reluctant to let it fly….the analyst on the telecasts was Bill ‘The Big Whistle ‘ Chadwick…he was a former referee…and he would implore Beck at times…shoot the puck Barry!!….i understand the players see and understand angles and clearance better than I do…but I would rather the puck go towards the net rather than a seeing eye dipsy do pass whch would look great on the highlights show but in reality let the goalie play it or misplay it….or hit a defensemans skate and rebounds appear…i would especially like to see it on our suddenly impotent power player as it would get players moving and milling about rather than being in their ‘assigned ‘ stations

    • Emmanuel

Ive seen the Summit Series (on DVD) and a couple of documentaries, the Rangers guys on the Canadian team are more villanized than the Russians, always portrayed as selfish and not concerned with checking.
      Never understood that.
