VGK’s Hard-Working Chip-And-Chase Line Key In Deciding Outcomes

It should come as no surprise that the most commonly used forward line for the Golden Knights this season is Ivan Barbashev, Jack Eichel, and Mark Stone. They’ve started 26 games together and have logged 305 minutes as a trio, making them the 14th most consistently used line in the entire NHL. What may come as a surprise though is which line ranks as the second most deployed line for VGK.

That would be Tanner Pearson, Nic Roy, and Keegan Kolesar.

The group first found themselves together early in the season against Los Angeles way back on October 22nd, Vegas’ 7th game of the season. It didn’t last long as William Karlsson’s season debut came two games later which broke them up. A few weeks later they were back together for a string of four games and then recently they’ve been together for seven of the last eight contests.

Their 13 games started and 131 minutes on ice together have them as the second most consistent forward line used by Bruce Cassidy this year. In fact, Vegas only have six lines who have seen more than 100 minutes together this year.

The stats will not jump off the page as they’ve been on the ice for five goals while surrendering just three, they are slightly positive in scoring chances created while slightly under 50% at shot attempts, shots on goal, and high-danger chances.

As a group though, they play an important role for a team constantly using a dominant top line. Pearson, Roy, and Kolesar have started just 32 of their 152 shifts in the offensive zone. They are expected to take shifts that begin either in the defensive or neutral zone, push the puck down to the other end, and give the line behind them a better situation to start in.

We have to have it and they have to be that line. They are the guys that have been there and done it, they’ve done it in a Stanley Cup run so they get it. In Dallas (last Friday), during that run at the end of the 2nd we needed that type of line. We need a couple of shifts to piggyback just to get the momentum back and get us off our heels and that’s what they are good at. -Bruce Cassidy

As a trio, they typically hold the keys for VGK success. When any of the three of Pearson, Roy, or Kolesar score, the Golden Knights are 13-2-2. That means they are 18-13-3 when they don’t.

In Sunday’s game against Florida, they combined for six points and contributed on three of Vegas’ four goals. Vegas beat the Panthers 4-1. Two nights later, they were held off the scoreboard completely and the Golden Knights lost in overtime.

We kept it simple. I think that was the message. Get pucks deep and try to make them make mistakes. -Nic Roy

We didn’t force too many plays. Played a chip-and-chase game and when we have our chances try to make plays then. -Tanner Pearson

A Pearson-Roy-Kolesar line is not going to strike fear in many opponents when they see the names on the page. Nor will it get the national media excited when they read the lineup sheet for the Golden Knights before a game. But, for this year’s team, which relies heavily on a top line and the power play, to have success that line must do their job and do it well. They do the dirty work, so Barbashev, Eichel, Stone, Hertl, Karlsson, Dorofeyev, and everyone else can do the fun stuff.

Well, can be no excuses tonight. We must play a complete 60 min. Game and put these chumps out early. With this tuff east coast roady coming up we need this win ….. period!

  2. I agree with the sentiments posed by Ken in this post…..HOWEVER and its a big HOWEVER…this is supposed to be our FOURTH line!!….much work needs to be done to have an adequate third line if we are going to go anywhere starting in late April!!

Here we go again….for 8 seasons VGK has called the 3rd line the 4th and used the teams worst/2nd worst skater on the “3rd line” which is REALLY the 4th line.

I have no idea why they do this……too many good C’s maybe?

  3. Pistol Pete

I always thought Pearson is a good replacement for Carrier on that line. He’s big enough and gets more points than Carrier. Question is who plays with Howden and Karlsson?

  4. Pistol Pete

Holtz could be/is looking iffy. Pick up the other Karlsson winger at the trade deadline? Sorry I did not think to include that thought in the preceding post.

who is the other karlsson what do you think about Richard rakkal of the penguins hearing he could be available

      • NAM

I am sure Reilly Smith is available. Just guessing, but maybe he would make a good partner for Karlsson.

    • NAM

Pete, 51 games into the season and Holtz still hasn’t figured anything out. Purhaps postpone your NAMBLA boy crush until future seasons? LOL

      • ThG

according to rotowire Holtz was sent down to HSK on Tuesday to make room for the French guy, but he didn’t play in last HSK, nor is he shown on THEAHL website for HSK. I guess the IT guy hasn’t updated the website yet ?

      • Pistol Pete

NAM that was no crush. You’re killing me. Did I ever predict he was going to ramp up? Look. When you have a 22 year-old (now 23) #7 who managed close to a point a game in close to a complete AHL season as an under-aged rookie, gets 16 goals in an NHL season there is some basis for optimism., nothing more. And after all show me another young player on the roster other than Dorofeyev with any real potential. Maybe I did keep harping on the subject but this is healthy fan optimism and nothing more. I don’t even like the player that much actually. I still hold out hope but nothing more. What is there to lose by being hopeful if it’s not delusion?

        • Pistol Pete

If you remember what McCrimmon said when he traded for Holtz that sometimes a change of scenery makes a difference. Like McCrimmon I was only hoping. I still don’t get why more fans don’t see a young prospect and HOPE vs. always having to see major results first. Some guys take more time. In any case it is not looking that great.

Where I get in hot water with some here is getting defensive when they are negative about a player. I reason they think they know better than the coaches and GM and want to belittle that. Better to just let it go.

          • PP, I see what my eyes see and what they see is a guy who is not a good stick handler nor possesses quickness and eludability…..cannot produce his own shot and the extremely few times he has gotten into prime scoring position cant find the back of the net….3 goals is all the proof i need to render my thoughts on him sad to say.

    • ThG

which one of your 1000 “preceeding posts” followed up by 100,120 revisions are you referring too ?

  5. I know there are those that remain hopeful on Holtz, myself not included unfortunately, I’d rather see a ‘tryout’ for Burke starting with tonight’s game.

    • Emmanuel

I think Holtz is a keeper.

Interestingly ive seen a couple of Youtube videos on each teams trade deadline needs. Both videos claimed VGKs 3rd pairing is the problem!
I was kinda shocked but the D does need to be addressed. Im not sure if the issue is Chief/theHauge I think its Hanifin.

      • Pistol Pete

My theory is Cassidy feels Howden-Karlsson is the best deployment for Holtz in order to help McCrimmon make a decision heading into the TD. That right wing position on the Karlsson third line is the only hole. You can still get someone at the TD and leave Holtz as a scratch. Scratching him at this point gives Cassidy a chance to take a look at Lavoie. Scratching him also gives Holtz something to think about in what is proving for him to be troublesome transition to the NHL. Holtz has way more credentials than Lavoie who is yet to log a point in 9 NHL games. Holtz is not showing up on the HSK roster. They already know what Holtz can do playing in the AHL which is a lot so there is no point in putting him there except on paper for cap purposes.

I still don’t understand why more fans don’t simply HOPE when it comes to situations like Holtz. Hope is just hope, you are not predicting a positive outcome. On the other hand negativity or even indifference leaves one open to getting some egg on their face. A recent example was losing HOPE when it came to Hertl.

    • Pistol Pete

Not being quick or a good stick handler is not Hotkz’s profile coming in. IMO Cassidy and McCrimmon are also at a loss to understand why Holtz’s game is not translating faster. He’ll end up somewhere though I doubt it will be the AHL. Another NHL team more than likely where he’ll grow into a solid depth player.

why not bring back Reilly Smith at half retained? that would be about $1.8 for a winger who we know already has chemistry with William Karlsson. they sent him away at 5, but could get him back for one last trial at 1.8, since he is a UFA and they can let him walk this summer if it does not work out. he has 10 goals, 15 assts, +1, 1ppg, 2 shg, and 2 gwg so far , which ain’t bad.

it would also help the PK, and also he was real popular with his teammates.

    • knights fan in minny

smitty and wild bill killing penalties was fun to watch

    • NAM

Dammit, I said the same thing above about Smith. You get a solid 200ft player that knows the system. You get near instant chemistry. He is not expensive cap-wise now. This is 1000 times better than picking up some Mantha or really some other B level player that has to figure out the system in a short amount of time. Last year they did the “home run” trade deadline and it didn’t work for shit. This year they need to fill the holes with role players to make a tough-to-play 4 line team.

  7. Smith is an interesting thought but I harken back to a thought I espoused at the beginning of the season.

He may be loathed in these parts, I for sure know he is by me, but if VGK could somehow coax Pavelski out of retirement to chase the Cup that has eluded him, POOF our third line center man magically appears.

Sign him after the last game before break, give him 2 weeks of practice time and let’s get ready for the last 30 games and playoffs.
