It may have taken the Golden Knights 85 minutes to win Game 5, but the signs for success were apparent from the initial puck drop. In the opening moments of Game 5, the Golden Knights decided to use their experience, force, and will to intimidate the less seasoned Mammoth. Beginning 24 seconds into the match, VGK’s Nic Dowd landed two brutal body checks, and Ivan Barbashev and Nick Howden each recorded one hit each. The quick flurry of hits slowed down the Mammoth’s preplanned fast start and shook one of their best offensive weapons. While it started over a week ago, Dowd hadn’t forgotten about his promise from Game 1.

Vegas’ early dedication to physicality frustrated Utah, which led to errant passes, missed shots, and poor body language. The Golden Knights brought back the hit parade later in the frame, and the Mammoth let their emotions get the best of them and took three straight penalties. The three minors committed weren’t for a haphazard high-stick, an unfortunate trip, or an overzealous hockey play. Nope, they were emotional, physical, and retaliatory types of infractions. Sure, Utah scored first, but their lead only held for two minutes.
It was widely known how much more experience the Golden Knights had over the Mammoth coming into the opening round of the playoffs. Through five games, Utah’s talent has found the back of the net in almost every game. The Mammoth’s Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther have five combined goals in five games this series, but they are also giving the puck away at a much higher clip than they did in the regular season and can’t avoid undisciplined penalties.
By the 25-minute mark, Cooley was a mess. The dynamic 21-year-old took two penalties and had no attempts or shots on net. Dowd and the Golden Knights have been trying to get under his skin by playing the long game, and it’s finally paying off.
While playoff experience aided the start of the game for Vegas, it also came into play late in regulation and then 25 minutes later in double overtime. Down one with under a minute remaining, the Golden Knights veterans calmly handled their 6-on-5 situation like it was a Wednesday in November. Their composure carried over with them into overtime and double overtime.
After failing to convert on a rare OT power play, Vegas shrugged it off and continued pressing Utah. The same occurred when Reilly Smith took a penalty in double overtime. It was anything but doom and gloom for the perennial postseason participant. Vegas nearly killed the entire penalty but didn’t need to. Experienced playoff goal scorer Brett Howden bailed Smith and the rest of his team out.
From Barbashev and Dowd’s early game physicality to the late game goal scoring ability from Howden, experience mattered in Game 5. Chances are, postseason exposure will likely come into play on Friday as the Golden Knights try to eliminate the immature Mammoth in Game 6. One team has been here before, many times, the other hasn’t, and it’s showing.

Utah very quick, play in a solid structure looking for open guys coming in waves and always thinking 2-3 passes ahead. They also have goal scorers, forecheck well and play the body and despite the miscues, they are a tough out. The VGK have taken the lead with heaviness, class and timely saves overcoming mental breakdowns. Onward and upward.

Well Tort has done a nice job 9 – 2 -1 in his 12 games. We aren’t the best team in the series but luck has been on our side. We were the better team but Montreal beat us to go to the finals and the infamous series with the 5 minute penalty on Cody E to snuffed out that years dreams. So I don’t feel bad if the worm has turned.
TS
Tim, you finally hv something to cheer about! We.ALL do!

Looking for WILD and especially the Ducks to close out their series tonight!

Cheap shot stars are out

We’ll see if Nix can find the cap space to re-sign Robertson (it’s reportedly tight after signing Rantanen). Anyways nice to see them lose in the first round perhaps Robertson will ask to be traded? Think if I was him I’d be pretty discouraged by this point that he’ll ever win a Cup in Dallas.
If we can close the Mammoth out the Ducks await. Nice to see the Oilers lose in round one too!
TS
I, too, didn’t want to face the Oilers. But those Quacks are a tough bunch— like the Mammoth, they are motivated and hungry!

If I was Torts I might scratch Kolesar for Bowman: Howden-Hertl-Bowman. Bowman has already shown he’s way more of a points producer than Kolesar will ever be and he’ll hit.

Spoke without first checking my bad. Bowman and Connelly both reassigned to Henderson for game one vs. Colorado. Makes sense.

Jesse Granger might just be onto something re: Eichel and Dorofeyev.

Jason Robertson is 34 pts over a point a game with an 38 goals per 82 games. As one might suspect for a point+/game player his assists outnumber his goals by a wide margin (213G/277A). He is currently #14 among active players with 1.07 pts/game. Some people think he’s overall better than Rantanen. And to think the VGK had two chances to draft him in round one and one in round two before the Stars finally grabbed him #39. VGK’s amateur scouting has always been good but in Robertson’s case he was a tough read probably mostly because his skating looked pretty average and I guess still does in some respects. The guy can really get get the puck in the net and assist teammates in doing so. Just a great player.

Career shots/game and (S%):
Eichel: 3.56 (10.9)
Robertson: 3.01 (15.3)
Dorofeyev: 2.69 (14.8)
Marner: 2.48 (13.4)
Stone: 2.14 (15.8)
The above is in descending order of shots/game. Whereas Eichel outshoots the others (even Robertson and especially Stone) his shooting % is by far the lowest (Stone is the highest). Safe to say Marner’s 2.48 shots/game is well above the league average. Eichel is a strong 32 goals/82 games owing to his high shot volume but just imagine if he could improve his S%!

Bye bye oilers! Ha ha

New to hockey, so forgive me. Is Utah known as a cheap shot team?
