TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 5 VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4 (21-8-5, 47 PTS)

Recap: The Golden Knights continued on their East Coast road trip to Tampa for a faceoff against the Lightning. The game took some time to settle in until Jonathan Marchessault opened the scoring with his 16th goal of the season. Ivan Barbashev doubled Vegas’ lead five minutes later with his 9th goal of 2023-24.

Trailing 2-0, the home team’s offense began to generate in the middle frame. Beginning at the 8:25 mark of the period, Tampa rattled off four straight goals taking a 4-2 advantage into the second intermission.

Vegas came out firing in the final period and tied the game 4-4. Marchessault scored on the power play and then Paul Cotter tied the game. With time winding down the home team scored to win in regulation, leaving the Golden Knights empty-handed.

The Golden Knights record drops to 21-8-5 losing to the Lightning 5-4. Next up Vegas will travel across the state for a Stanley Cup rematch with the Florida Panthers. Puck drop for Saturday’s game is set for Noon. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: When these two teams hook up we are used to getting pretty crazy games. This one was no different as both teams held multi-goal advantages that were erased. VGK’s penalty kill couldn’t bail them out in the 2nd and they allowed a few too many dangerous looks, especially off the rush. Tough loss but a super exciting game. (Analysis by Ken)

Well, that was a blast. It hurts not to at least get a point out of that one but I love the championship pedigree displayed by coming back in the third period. This was a battle of what I believe are the two best franchises in the league in the past 6 1/2 seasons. That Jiri Patera rebound on the winning goal was basically like passing it to Nick Paul. Let’s face it, we are going to have AHL calibre goaltending for what could be the next 10+ games. We can possibly see an 8-8-3 type of run coming until Adin Hill or Logan Thompson come back and that’s perfectly fine as putting all of those points in the bank in the first half of the season will come in handy.

Lots of positives. Paul Cotter continues to evolve into a unique talent that I think will really come in handy in the postseason. In spite of what the scoreboard said, I do consider this a nice bounce back game from Tuesday in Carolina.

I’ll sit back and let Richie Rich provide his post game analysis.

Have a great evening fellow Knights fans.

    • Anand

Nice assessment Sorveno. Agree completely. Not ready to pigeon hole Patera as a career AHL goalie but that is what he is now. Stone made such a sweet pass to Karlsson in the end but he just could not get any wood on it.

what the hell is with this team and delay of game penalties so many the last 3 to 4 years

  3. DeezNutz

This team’s goaltending and defense has turned into complete dog shit. Once they figure it out the forwards will forget how to score. Couldn’t even hang on for the extra point and we have D-men out there who move like 65 year olds we need Theodore and our only good goalie back ASAP.

    • knights fan in minny

wow peter panic 47 points and lead the nhl

    • Rashaad

DeezNutz, respect your opinion, respect everyone’s opinion but disagree. I did not see a terrible defensive performance. Tampa capitalized on their power plays and the last goal was like a pass to Paul like Sorvino said. They still for the most part kept the shots to the perimeter and clogged up the middle. Lets have fun with this and learn a little bit about what Saville and Patera can bring.

      • TS

        Rashaad, great comment. Agreed!
It was almost comical, seeing 4 of our players in that Penalty Box together. Just how many players can fit in that Box, anyway? I think we damn near filled it to capacity!

    Game 34 Analysis
    VGK 4 FLA 5

Vancouver has an opportunity to jump to the top of the NHL points board and into 1st Place in the Pacific Division. As of this writing they were tied with the Stars 2-2 in the 3rd period.

VGK played a very good 1st and 3rd period. The difference in this one was a complete collapse in the 2nd period, giving up 4 goals. The VGK has several opportunities to tie it up at 5 with 6-on-5. Two very good chances with just 5 seconds left in the game. The last one got behind Vasy but he fell on it for the win in regulation.

I am not going to shit on Patera, he’s 3rd string. I expect a better performance defensively and it has to be a 60 minute commitment.

Next up is a rematch with the Cup finalist Panthers who were 1-4 losers on their home ice tonight to the Blues. Florida is 11th in the league in points with 38. The Golden Knights will be either 1st or 2nd in the league with 47 points. Note that the Bruins and the Kings have a better win percentage. Sam Reinhart is their points leader with 39.

Allowing 4 goals in the 2nd period was a disaster this evening.

    VGK 21-8-5 (47pts)
    FLA 18-11-2 (38pts)

    Stars of the game:
    *** Cotter
    ** Eichel
    * Marchy

  5. Pistol Pete

Eichel’s two assists extends his points streak to 12 games. Great game for Cotter (McCrimmon may just have himself a top nine forward signed through 2025-26 at entry level). Have not seen the game but guessing this was a win with Hill or LT. Too bad Patera could not hang in there and make it to OT where he did well last time including the SO.
Anyone want to see what Saville looks like?Tougher to win with both goalies down and your top scoring D out not to mention Kolesar.

  6. Sorvino

Well said Pistol Pete. In fact, I was a bit worried that the comments would be extremely negative and suicidal sounding after the second period but that championship pedigree to make it a game in the third period was nice to see. I was not surprised.

  7. Jose

An old tv analyst Harry Neale that I used to watch when I was a kid used to always say, ‘show me a good goalie and i will show you a good coach. Most of the coaches that have been fired this year have had horrible goaltending. Nashville’s Juse Saros has been on a big time hot streak lately and has saved Nashville’s season.

  8. Sorvino

Is it just me or is Brayden McNabb quietly having a very good season?

  9. TS

Saville doesn’t look old enough to drive a car, let alone play in the NHL! It has become a little dicey, when our now #2 goalie looks young enough to still be in high school . ( I realize he’s 23)
I fear the losses will continue until our starting G’s are back. I hope I’m wrong, but….0

  10. Pistol Pete

An interesting night around the league. First off the Stars keep the Canucks tied with the VGK by winning in OT. Blues crush the Panthers in Florida 4-1. Sabres obliterate the Leafs 9-3 and as of this writing OTT is up 4-3 against COL at the second intermission (was 4-2). Lots of parity in the NHL. Hard to win as the VGK have seen of late.

    • Richie-Rich

Officially the VGK and VAN are tied with 47 points on top of the league, but in reality we just slipped to 2nd in the Division and 2nd overall in the League.

Vancouver is the surprise of the season. I thought the Kings would be the major challenge, and they still may make a run.

Despite an offensive slump that lasted 10 games, and now a defensive one, the VGK remain atop the league with the Canucks with 47 points. You can still see the skill and the desire on this team.

      It’s a long season….

Strap in, we are almost at the half way point. Florida, Anaheim and the Kings remain in 2023.

      • Pistol Pete

Jack Eichel surprised the world by bringing his best game when it counted the most. To repeat we’ll need him to do it again.

    • Pistol Pete

Nope. Avs scored three in the third to beat the Senators 6-4. No upset that time. Better team wins.

  11. JB

That was a tuff one not to get a point, after great comeback. But a good game anyway. We just have to get thru this tuff stretch. A bashing of Florida would be a nice ending to this southern trip!

  12. JV

Only question I have is why was the makeshift 4th line of Carrier Howden Amadio on the ice the last 1:30 in a tie game? They were all -2 as well. I don’t recall an icing that would have forced them to stay on.

    • Danny Gallivan

exactly right. WTF was the 4th line doing on the ice vs Brayden Point and Kucherov in the last minute of a tied game???

Gee, somehow I don’t think Kopitar or Crosby or MacKinnon would be sitting on the bench in favor of effin Howden and Amadio in the last minute of a tied game.

I love the job that Cassidy has done here, but not last night.

  13. ThG

very sloppy game, VGK had this game in the bag until they started gooning it up; no 49 literally opened the door with a hit he had no reason to make. Then more goon play by Roy. This definitely woke up the Bolts. Goalie was too slow.

Now it’s only 3 days you know what ?
PS genocide Joe is worst president in last fifty years, the world is on fire.
USA is bleeding interest rates payments due to his green mandates causing

Thg, Have you been tested for Bi- Polarism?? You need to. You flip- flop like a beached fish!

    • Richie-Rich

I have two thoughts on the Barbashev hit. First, it was 100% clean. Did it fire up the Lightning? Yes it did. That hit was likely the trigger and main reason for this loss. The Hague dust up was a nothing burger.

Second thought. The VGK needs to play its game and not allow thuggery to get to them.

      Merry Christmas SinBin peeps.

      • JB

Nothing wrong at all with a Barbys hit. That’s his game. He’s not a fighter but held his own. We lost our composure during the 5 on 3 and 5 on 4. But TB has a very good PP. But battled back to tie. Should have had at least a point, but unfortunate bounce on the save, right to the guy.

An economist who focuses on consumer spending has issued a dire warning about the U.S. economy in the coming year.

“Since 2009, this has been 100 percent artificial, unprecedented money printing and deficits: $27 trillion over 15 years, to be exact,” economist Harry Dent told Fox Business on Dec. 19. “This is off the charts, 100 percent artificial, which means we’re in a dangerous state.

“I think 2024 is going to be the biggest single crash year we’ll see in our lifetime.

Trump will be the next President or our country is 100% f*cked. It’s probably already because both political parties pander to K Street lobbyists, Big Pharma, The Military Industrial Complex, and Big Tech globalists.

Do I give a sh*t? At this point no. I am debt free and I likely won’t see the end of it. In the meantime watch as the middle class is destroyed by both political parties.

The real fascists in this country are those who continue to support the FISA spying on Americans, massive annual $1 Trillion dollar deficits, and a massive interest payment on that debt that is unaffordable and unsustainable, open borders having allowed 8 million to come across illegally just since 2021, a world on the edge of World War III.

Yeah, be thankful for this Christmas because future generations of Americans are going to have to pay for all of this. The real fascists are Democrats and Establishment Republicans like McConnell.

      • Frank

If you have kids or grandkids, you should care. Someone is going to have to pay the piper for our current excesses….. Unfortunately, it may well be them. Exciting game last night tho…. scrappy effort by the knights to come back in the third. Bad goal on Patera in the last minute.

      • TS

…and like trump..the textbook definition.of the FASCIST he aspires to be… look up the definition— it describes Trump to a HUGE “T”…

        • TS

Fascism is the method of rule that DICTATORS use to suppress their citizens. Control the press( Trump would shut down all liberal press). Punish, jail their opponents ( Trump has promised to do exactly that). Strong- arm control over elections ( hasn’t trump been indicted for his failed attempts to control/ change the outcome of such an election?- he wanted the Military involved). Fascists use their militaries to control their o-w-n citizens ( Trump has tried to use our Military to suppress Americans and has promised to continue doing so.)
Fascism is the way Dictators( like Trump’s aspirations) contain contain, control and punish their opponents, with force, revenge and Retribution. I ask: Does that all sound like Biden or Trump?? Who again is the Fascist?

          • TS

Why is it that courts across America have convicted and punished alllllll those Trumpers who took part in Trump’s master plan to overturn his lost election? All his co- conspirators? All his attorneys? All the Jan 6 atrackers? Why are these people all guilty of the crimes,, collusion and incitement they committed against America??— because they are GUILTY!!

Exciting game fans got there monies worth 1;08 from getting a point but it wasn’t meant to be. Patera’s not great but in fairness the 5 on 3 goal and the one off a ricochet would be hard for anyone to stop. Off to Florida who has been playing well let’s hope we can scratch out a win. I’m looking forward to the Juniors tournament which starts on December 26th. Merry Christmas to all Ho Ho Ho.

  17. Since when does a hard clean check…which I wish was seen more these days…equate to gooning????…watching the game last night reminded me yet again how well we have always matched up against the Lightning…and another knot in the stomach that we somehow let that opportunity of beating the Canadians and advancing to the Finals that year against the Bolts who I’m firmly convinced we would have beaten in an exciting 7 game series!!

    • ThG

@ larry there are times to let a sleeping bear lie, and not poke them. Not a smart move to make, and he made other gaffes in game.

      • The more hitting the better…plants a seed for the next moment… the next encounter.. causes yips and turnovers …,all one ever has to do is look at Theodore and Schmidt as 2 who shudder at thought of a forechecking forward barreling in… I realize the game has evolved safety wise and player friendly wise… but it is still the game of hockey where every inch of ice must be claimed as one’s own!!

        • Richie-Rich

It wasn’t the hit that was responsible. It was a lack of focus and ability to defend. The hit was clean.

          • RR – Encouraging to read the comment of an individual who understands the game.

bolts maybe, the canes or bruins probably not- my strat replay series says vgk got perfect storm in facing the cats last year; would have probably lost to bruins. Canes would have been close. Everyone else in the EAST the vgk would have taken easily. Including the loser leafs and rangers.

  18. Nice first period and recovery from the Tuesday night fiasco –
Period two – wheels came off the bus 4 unanswered goals – not much more to say
Third period great come back after falling asleep in second – looked like another OT but an unfortunate goal by TB late. Vegas 6 on 5 provided some excitement with Eichel coming really close at the horn. On to the Panthers and an early one Saturday so the boys can get home before Christmas day. Still a chance at 2 points from the road trip.
