VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3 TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 2 (30-21-4 64 PTS) – SO (1-0)

The Golden Knights couldn’t stay out of the box in the 1st period taking three uncharacteristic penalties. Schmidt (0 on season), Karlsson (5 on season), and Smith (3 on season) each took a penalty. Tampa Bay scored on one of them. The Golden Knights got a PP of their own and squandered it not getting even a single shot. The Golden Knights battled through multiple penalty kills to eventually tie the game at two. Valentin Zykov scored the tying goal. Vegas had a power play to end regulation and one to end OT but couldn’t get one to go. Alex Tuch came up huge in the shootout recording the only goal.

Best game from Deryk Engelland as a Golden Knight.. Too bad we just can’t retain him as the designated penalty killer. The boys intensity increased after the goal overturn and the Carpenter non-call. They certainly felt Gallant’s anger, and were flying around the ice the rest of the way with sharp passing and defense. Good call on Zykov.

  2. Joe

The defensive player initiated the contact. The problem isn’t the call, it is the consistency. I’m still mad about the OT game against the Sharks back in May. Marchessault was pushed into the goalie. Should not have been interference. Miller pushed Joseph into the Fleury. Not interference. I’ve said it on here before, if a defending player pushes the offensive player into the goalie, no interference; if the offensive play pushes the defending player into the goalie, interference. It should be easy.
I am back and forth on the hit on Carpenter. It was just plain scary to see him try to skate off the ice. Do not rush him back. It was from the side, not from behind. The end result is the issue. I have no idea what or if the DPS will do anything, and not sure if they should. I want to see the hit again. If it was way, way after the puck left, then they should.
PK was massive tonight against that power play. Not taking 5 penalties against Tampa would also have made it easier.
Not sure you can praise both goalies enough. So I won’t try.
The Knights are at their best when they can just throw wave after wave of speed at you.
Detroit is not good, need to get at least one point to salvage the road trip.
