VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2 ST. LOUIS BLUES 1 (39-25-7, 85 PTS) – OT

Recap: The Golden Knights were looking to separate themselves from the rest of the Wild Card hopefuls with a victory in St. Louis. Pavel Dorofeyev picked up his 11th goal of the season 5:59 into the opening period. Vegas’ goaltender Logan Thompson turned away 13 St. Louis shots in the period to hold a 1-0 advantage.

Both teams traded chances in the middle period but the puck wouldn’t find the back of the net. After 40 minutes the Golden Knights held on to their one goal advantage.

Thompson made some key stops in the final frame and continued to frustrate St. Louis. With five minutes remaining the home team tied the game 1-1 and forced overtime. Vegas’ goalie made a game saving stop on a St. Louis penalty shot and Jonathan Marchessault heroically ended sudden death with his 39th of the season.

The Golden Knights record improves to 39-25-7 defeating the Blues in overtime. Vegas will get back on the ice tomorrow evening in Nashville. Puck drop against the Predators is scheduled for 5PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: For the first 40 minutes the Golden Knights put on a defensive masterclass. Their exits were wonderful, the neutral zone support was terrific, and the forecheck constantly hounded the Blues into giveaways. Everything was going as perfectly as it could have been until the 3rd. It all unravelled but luckily Logan Thompson came up with a bundle of massive stops including a penalty shot save in OT. And, as always, Jonathan Marchessault comes through with the clutch winner. (Analysis by Ken)

The first two periods were brilliant, considering that they were playing against a team playing for their season in their home arena. Scoring is hard to come by making this another grind. They made Logan‘s night easy in the first two periods, and then Thompson rewarded them with the brilliant third period.

    Mission accomplished!

  2. Emmanuel

The D has really tightened up lately.

  3. JB

Big two points! LT was amazing!

  4. Jose

Anthony Mantha is becoming more comfortable with this team,

    • Earl the Replanted Transplant

I think a part that we all ignored about Mantha is the fact of the home turmoil. A lot of us, me included, bash the dude hard w/o considering he had to pick up and leave his pregnant wife and baby girl. His dad has to take his dog for now, we as fans can be total douches at times. Hopefully he gets in a groove and becomes an asset.

      • ThG

        earl
mantha has been playing ok, only the morons on this board, which there are many , make their usual inane comments. They know nothing about hockey.
Or how to watch a game. One comment is constantly falling out of their chair watching game upside down, thinking they are watching baseball. Another has ratshit for brains, another fell off their bike hitting their head, and another has a blow gun pointing from one ear to other ear praising Cotter all the time.

        • Wingenter

Which one of those morons said that Jonathan Marchessault should be a healthy scratch in the playoffs?

          • ThG

no one here ! Moe ron !

I believe the comment at that POINT IN TIME was that no. 81 was playing like shit. So take your bull shit some place else it won’t fly here.

Stats tell you where you have been not where you are going. WAKE UP CALL !!

  5. DeezNutz

Scoring on ly 1 goal after playing that good is pathetic. Can anyone on this team score on a breakaway? Absolutely brutal just missing chance after chance after chance until the other team starts surging. They need to score like minny mouse in a hotel 5 if they want to make the playoffs.

  6. Pistol Pete

    LT was great.

All VGK needs is 6-5 (6/11 = .545) for 97. Blues need 10-2 for 96 which will be hard to do.

Still some work left to do to get those six wins though. Will have to beat some contenders to do it.

    Game 71 Analysis VGK 2, STL 1

    VGK improves to 39-25-7, 85pts .599, +19 GF/GA

The VGK (85pts) extended their lead to 5 points over the Blues (80pts) with a game in hand, and 8 points ahead of the Wild (77pts). This game was 60 minutes of playoff hockey. Binnington and Thompson, along with his goal posts, were the stars of this game. To be honest, I believe the Knights had many more good opportunities than the Blues throughout the game. The Blues only began making a major push in the 3rd period, and once again the VGK gave up a key goal in the final period pushing the game to OT. LT had to stop a penalty shot, and the two misfits finished the game in OT with Karlsson causing a turnover deep in the Blues zone behind the goaltender. Marchy took it and rifled a shot past Binnington for the OT winner. McNabb gave several Blues a beating this evening including laying some haymakers on the Blues Captain. This was exactly the sort of effort the VGK needed to gain some confidence that has been lacking lately.

Dorofeyev is definitely a keeper. Marchy goes nowhere in the offseason. He needs to remain a Golden Knight for the rest of his NHL career.

    1st Star – Thompson
    2nd Star – Marchessault
    3rd Star – Dorofeyev

There are 11 games left in the season. The VGK must go 6-5 in order to reach 97 points. The Golden Knights remain in control of their own destiny. However, the road ahead is filled with playoff teams. Next up are the red hot Predators 42-25-4 (88pts) .620 and +25 GF/GA who have won 5 straight and are 8-0-2 in their last 10 games. The VGK can get back to within 1 point of Nashville with a win tomorrow night. The question is who will be in goal on this back-to-back schedule? The obvious choice is Jiri Patera.

Loving the progression of the defense. That was their bread and butter last year and has really started to improve the last few games. However two games in a row I feel like vegas has it locked down but can’t take advantage of it and score any goals. I am just waiting for the other team to score and flip the momentum. CBJ couldn’t do it, but STL did tonight. LT said FU St Louis and put the team on his back. Satisfying win even though we only gained a point.

  9. Vic

Logan and McNabb the stars of the show, Completely different feel to this game as the VGK played very hard. Glad Marchy scored because it was his error that led to the Blues score. Well earned two points, and the Preds must be happy our side had to go all out tonight.

Coach….can you please let Logan play again tomorrow. He’s a young guy and he can take it. Goalies feed off of action and staying sharp. Roll the dice and forget the unwritten rule that the same goalie can’t play a back to back.

    • ThG

yes Vic, no. 81 muffed the puck, and no 27 failed to cover his man on his side. So one thing let to another.

Plus LT bailed them out, despite a very poorly officiated game. One of the worst games this year as far as refs were concerned. Even the home fans were chanting refs suck , ref suck. Plus the Blues hit the iron TWICE and MISSED on a penalty shot ! VGK were extremely lucky to win this game. Smashville is another story. They hit hard, and often, don’t match up well with VGK.

  10. Martin

Very disappointed that I couldn’t watch this game. I have YouTube tv and ESPN plus. The game apparently was on NHL network only. Same thing recently when they played the Kraken., only on Root TV for Christ sake. I’m in Alaska and they freaking black out all Kraken games 3,000 miles away and no NHL Network on Utube Tv. Anyone else have these frustrations.

    • Barb

I am a big VGK (lived in Vegas til 2019) and now in Texas. Like you, I have U-Tube and ESPN+. When NHL grabs the feed it’s me and my streaming the FoxLV radio on my phone. Dan and Gary do a pretty good job calling the game

    • TS

Martin, you’re a Vgk from.Alaska?? Wow, that’s awesome! You’ve got a lot of dedication to TRYING to get the games! GO KNIGHTS!

  11. TS

Battle of the Goalies!! LT had his best game as a Knight– I marveled at each spectacular save! ( the acrobatic cartwheel save was a Fleury- like move– loved it!) The guys earned this one. Marchy, as always, came through when it counted. Liked Hague’s game, for a change. Mcnabb was a surprise scrapper– where did THAT come from?
Great effort overall, against an elite G in Bennington. LT is gonna be just fine!

  12. RR, the obvious choice to be in net is only 1 guy and his name is Logan Thompson, without a doubt he will be our goalie tomorrow as VGK stops yet another long winning streak, it was done to the oilers and now its payback time for the beating they put on us….and our Captain…last month at The Fortress.

  13. Tim

McNabb in my opinion had a great game. Talk about putting the fear of the Lord in them he was banging taking no prisoners. I can see Logan Thompson as the #1 star but not recognizing what kind of game McNabb played is beyond me.

  14. Pistol Pete

I have mocked by some here for spending what appears to be an inordinate amount of time on the Pav/Cotter derby but this is only because I recognized immediately after Reilly Smith was traded that effectively one of the two would need to replace him in order to help perpetuate the Cup-winning roster. It took most of the season, a lot of it with Cotter floundering defensively, before the case was settled. With Pav scoring three games in a row, 6 of the last 10, and sitting +8 for the season compared to Cotter’s -10 it’s pretty obvious who the more worthy player is at this point. Pav is defensively responsible which is very important on this team.

Why was I enthusiastic about Pav early on? When a 20 year-old Russian comes to North American ice and scores at an 82 game pace of 31 in the AHL that turns heads in the skill evaluation department just as it did mine. His 18 NHL goals in 56 games = 82 game rate of 26. Hopefully the more games he plays the more impactful he’ll become. Stronger on the puck, better puck management. Encouraging.

    • ThG

popgun you talk and switch side so often people need a score card to keep up with your waivering and nonsense posts.

Nice to root for someone, but going way over the top.

      • Pistol Pete

The Hockey God do you ever have anything nice to say to anybody ever? Lol. And stop stereotyping everybody when it comes to everything!

        P. S. Please try every once in a while to contribute something substantive when it comes to the hockey discussion. Make your handle proud!

        • Jose

Pistol Pete, he did say that Jonathan Marchessault so should be a healthy scratch in the playoffs. I’m sure that made his handle proud.

          • Pistol Pete

I think because it was under his old handle The Hockey God he may have tried to claim it was not him (or her) lol. Pretty sleazy if you ask me but most important a jackoff for supporting the poster who claimed Marchessault should be scratched. A jackoff can be somebody who is contrarian for the sake of being contrarian i.e., they don’t actually believe what they are purporting.

          • ThG

i am ThG try to get it right, and stop spinning JOSE
the comment was no. 81 was playing like shit !

And he was at that POINT in time, stop cherry picking.

        • ThG

Pop gun i am ThG, don’t you know there was many people here posting as the Hockey GOD

“do you ever have anything nice….” blah blah blah, yes when they are worthy comments, and not same ole bull shit or people starting their posts with “I have been mocked….” well you deserved to be mocked , you even recognize it yourself. So get a clue, when you say something of value, I will be first to let you know.

          until then . zzzz

  15. Pistol Pete

    Jack’s 24 goals in 52 games = 82 game rate of 38.

    • Vic

So much more than just goals… Two-way play, setting up people every game multiple times, taking the puck from the d zone to the o zone in a flash, endless zone entries, attitude, leadership, helped Marchy win an MVP, was a key to winning the cup and hopefully we’ll get to see that again.

  16. LVsc

the addition of Noah Hanifin, and the return of Ben Hutton, has solidified the d corps.

Notice that Petro and Martinez both out and yet the shots against go way down several games in a row. more mobility provided by 15 and 17, and the TEAM defensive structure has returned closer to the level of late last season. iow, the forwards are beginning to wake up to their 200 foot defensive responsibilities.

still, a couple of things to see more from the forwards……go NORTH with the puck in the neutral zone, and dump it in deep, and stop the east west giveaways in the NZ.

and cycle the puck deep behind the opponent net more, and stop forcing the puck back toward the point so often, which just feeds the breakaways and transition game of the opponents, as it did when Carrier made the soft pass back toward McNabb that ended up in a breakaway and only a great save by LT bailed them out of that disaster.

  17. JB

Tonight will be a tuff one to win. I’m hoping we somehow can get a point. Myself I would throw Piri out there and see if he catches some magic. Let LT get ready for more winnable games coming.

  18. Henderson Knights

on the Moneypuck website the Vgk playoff chances have gone from 80% last week to now 90.8% today.

Wild are at 6.7 and Blues are at 4.3

However, the chart last night showed that the Vgk have the toughest schedule of all the teams remaining.

  19. ThG

“Before her fourth season as the full-time public-address announcer for the Baltimore Orioles begins on Thursday, Adrienne Roberson brought her voice to the NHL.”

bah, another woke broke, unqualified, identity politics “diversity” hire taking away a job from a real qualified person who actually played the game and knows what is going on. Our nation is going down the shit hole fast with all this nonsense and bullshit.

Just what NHL needs an unqualified, loud mouthed, PA announcer. What a joke, no wonder the ducks suck.

    • Pistol Pete

More of the same tired old cliches from you The Hockey God!

      • Wingenter

Yup Pistol Pete, same shit and so predictable. Hates people, especially women. Think that any opinion that differs from his is moronic.

        • ThG

wingenter, did I say anything about women ?? NOPE. So take your bull shit post elsewhere, I said “bah, another woke broke, unqualified, identity politics “diversity” hire taking away a job from a real qualified person who actually played the game and knows what is going on. Our nation is going down the shit hole fast with all this nonsense and bullshit.”

no gender is mentioned any where, learn to read moron

        • Pistol Pete

Don’t think he likes Blacks and Jews either. The root of his anti-“woke”-ism. I hate the stupid “identity politics” label too. Stupid. My deceased father a lifelong Republican would be aghast.

          • Rashaad

Pistol Pete, he is really stupid. A few days ago he called me woke and keeps thinking I’m a Democrat annd ant the end of the post calling me a loser leaf fan. I don’t even know what that means. Am I supposed to start calling him a loser avalanche fan or loser hurricanes fan. He just makes up shit as he goes.

  20. NAM

NSH physically beat the shit out of VGK the last game they played. Not crazy about seeing them now on the road trip and on the 2nd of a back to back. Still one of the more beatable teams out of the next 4. Need the win.

  21. Rashaad

Pistol Pete, I still like Paul Cotter. He’s had a tough season, a little snake bit and bad luck scoring goals, and then lost some confidence. I don’t think the Paul Cotter story is done, but he should definitely not be in the lineup over anybody at this moment.

As for Dorofeyev, he has pure sniping ability which is lacking on this roster.

    • ThG

@ratshiitte, Cotter is victim of circumstance, it’s called sophomore jinx. I would give him one more year.

      • Rashaad

ThG, when I post an opinion, I am more than happy to converse and agree or disagree with anybody in this forum other than yourself. I don’t try to engage in any hockey conversation with someone who thinks that Jonathan Marchessault should have been a healthy scratch in the playoffs.

I’m not debating Paul Cotter with you. lol

    • Pistol Pete

Dorofeyev certainly does go to the net every chance he get both to shoot and get set up. Good anticipation getting up ice in transition and getting back into his end. High hockey IQ. Agree have not heard the last from Cotter.

  22. Rashaad

ThG, you’re a loser and a piece of shit of a human being and nobody likes you, but what is your issue with Pistol Pete. He is a class act and very polite and doesn’t insult anybody. It seems like you are trying to get a rise out of him. Good luck with that! Is it because you are so miserable that you need a new challenge?

At least with me I get it since I called you out for saying that Jonathan Marchesault should be a healthy scratch in the playoffs. Fuck you’re stupid and so incredibly predictable now as well. Let me guess, another Gene Scott video post coming on Sunday afternoon. Oooooh I can’t wait, the suspense is killing me.

    • Pistol Pete

Rashaad appreciate your kind remarks! As for ThG only he can decide if he wants to start being nice to people here. I’ll leave it at that!

Here’s to a solid 60 minutes tonight. We can beat this team!

  23. Rashaad

ThG, I’ll make it clear in case I have not already. I’m more than happy to insult you because all you do is insult everyone else.

In regards to hockey, I don’t respect you enough to discuss it with you. So you can reply to any of my hockey posts, but I won’t respond back to those. I can’t see anybody who would actually want to debate or discuss hockey with anyone who thinks that their opinion is always correct and everyone else is a moron.

If you want my attention, and I know you do, it’s best to just insult me rather than talk hockey.

Can’t wait until Sunday afternoon for the next Dr. Gene Scott sermon. 120ish hours away.

  24. knights fan in minny

logan slammed the door and the d is improving

  25. Great win and they fortunately pulled it out. You would think by now they would realize you can’t just play well for 40 minutes and expect to win. Why they thought they could coast in the third is hard to accept let alone understand. I am sure it drive Cassidy nuts. They were like two different teams. Let hope tonight they remember it’s a 60 minute effort that’s essential.
