OTTAWA SENATORS 4 VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3 (32-19-7, 71 PTS) – SO (1-0)

Recap: The Golden Knights kicked off their five-game road trip with a Hockey Night in Canada matchup against the Ottawa Senators. Jonathan Marchessault opened the scoring with his 30th goal of 2023-24. Goaltender Logan Thompson was sharp in net stopping all eight of the Senators’ shots to preserve Vegas’ one-goal edge.

Chandler Stephenson doubled the Golden Knights’ lead with an early 2nd period power play goal. It was Stephenson’s 11th goal of the season. The Senators began to heat up midway through the middle frame. Ottawa rattled off two goals before the break to even the score 2-2.

The Senators took their first lead of the game at the 5:48 mark of the final period. With under two minutes remaining Stephenson added his second goal of the game to force overtime. Ottawa would go on to win in a shootout 4-3.

The Golden Knights record drops to 32-19-7 losing to the Senators 4-3 in overtime. Vegas will take a short flight to Toronto for a rematch with the Maple Leafs on Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: Ottawa came in to play a simple game and the Golden Knights dealt with it very well for the first 30 minutes. But, a few failed exits gave the Sens life. The first empty-net goal of the year rescued a point but a poor OT and a scoreless shootout cost them the extra one. (Analysis by Ken)

Game 58 Analysis, OTT 4, VGK 3 OTL

An overtime loss to the Senators, one of the MUST WIN games on my list, but they do pick up a point. The VGK are 3-5 since the All Star Break. The next 2 games are against top tier teams in the league and the VGK will at least hopefully win one of these games.

The point guarantees that the VGK will remain in 2nd place in the Pacific. Edmonton plays later this evening. Vancouver picked up the win tonight against Boston in OT by a score of 3-2. Vancouver expands their Pacific Division lead to 11 points over the Golden Knights 82 to 71. Edmonton can pull within one point of taking over 2nd place with a win later this evening against Calgary

The Golden Knights played well in the first period, but fell back into bad habits in the 2nd period. The Senators scored 3 straight goals to take the lead. Stephenson tied it up with a late 6 on 5 goal in the 3rd period. In OT the Canucks outshot the Knights 6 to 3. The Golden Knights were shutout in the shootout with Roy, Marchessault and Theodore as shooters.

    Stars of the game?
Nope, just asteroids…..no stars do I have to give.

  2. Jose

We got a point. Chandler Stephenson came up big.

  3. DeezNutz

I shut it off after the failed breakaway and 2 missed open nets. I knew it was going to be one of those patented VGK make any goalie look like a Vezina winner kinda games. Adding Eichel, Carrier and Stone to this team does not fix their lack of scoring talent. The cup run was a fluke.

    • knights fan in minny

and your a fluke piece of clueless shit

      • Earl the Replanted Transplant

Hey Minni, Don’t get your BP up over a Troll who is probably from San Hoser.

      • Tyler Durden

Ken must be proud of you and THG the two biggest trolls on this blog.
You two turned this page into a huge pile of
(Along with most of the other ignorant hockey knowledge knights fans here)

        • knights fan in minny

another whiney little bitch has spoken thats you turden

        • TS

Tyler, it’s not necessary to blast the entire group here, just because of one or two posters! If you feel that way, just stop participating. I took a break because of all the BS, and my attitude improved. Maybe you should try the same.
          .

        • ThG

tyler can’t handle the truth, stop being so hard on yourself. Loser know nothing. You started this personal attack, now you are going to be a coward and run away ? ! LOSER.

  4. Earl the Replanted Transplant

Where is the hustle? I felt like the guys playing the hardest and really trying to hustle was Brisson and the 4th line. If there were any stars it was Morelli, Rempal, and Froese. They didn’t allow any goals on their shifts, they fought for some opportunities, and they were skating hard to the puck. At least the “kids” played hard and didn’t embarrass themselves.

  5. knights fan in minny

what was martini doing trying to clear that puck up the middle use the boards that play killed them kolsar is invisible he does not even play physical anymore roy was putting up points then they stick him with the 2 slugs cotter and kolly

  6. Barb

Much better. 1 pt better than none. The biggest mistake was not letting Cotter take a chance in the shoot out. His ‘signature’ shot with nobody roughing him up would have been a good way to boost some of his confidence

  7. Tim

I don’t get it you just lose 3 home games you should win and you go on the road and play a shitty Ottawa team and come away happy you got a point. Now if that isn’t a losers mentality I don’t know what is. Now were going to Toronto and Boston where they’ll had us our ass but boy at least we got one point in Ottawa.

  8. Pistol Pete

The Senators coming in 10-4-3 including a three goal second period to trounce the Stars 4-1 on Thursday, I was prepared for a close game even a regulation loss. They have a bunch of young guys who can score their weakness being goaltending and lack of defend first/offense second mentality. I’ll take the point.

I don’t recall the VGK ever losing five starting forwards to injury who in descending order of impact are: Eichel, Stone, Dorofeyev, Carrier, and Howden. Good to have the starting D corp however their job is tougher without two of the top two way players (Eichel and Stone). WithTHIS depleted roster it will take defending of the highest order to have anything more than a snowball’s chance in Hades against the Leafs and Bruins.

The return of Eichel and the acquisition of a scoring winger by the TD can’t come soon enough. With Stone reputedly out for the remainder of the regular season with a ruptured spleen McCrimmon has plenty of salary space to work with. Should be interesting.

  9. TS

Pp, good to hear from you again! I was afraid you left us, and you are a voice of knowledge and reason…we NEED that here! I was JUST thinking to send out a search party for you!!

  10. TS

Ist time this year we pulled our G, and 6-5 actually worked….wonder how many times we ATTEMPTED it this season, and it FAILED?
Maybe 15 times with ONE successful goal? I’m glad it worked. Once. But it’s the worst move we’ve made most of the time…

  11. JB

Pulling the goaltender and scoring late was exciting. Stevie could have ended it in style with a hat trick winning goal on that breakaway, but no dice. Cotter seems like an empty uniform right. I have been one of his backers but he is very disappointing lately. We just don’t have enough talent on the ice right now. Missing to much.

    • TS

Seems Cotter is a ( bad)comedy of errors. No matter what he attempts, it fails. Is he just trying g TOO hard?

  12. ThG

when AHLers play better than experienced NHLers (you know the guy that keeps missing pucks, maybe needs glasses, or makes a dumb penalty leading to SENS goal) then you know you have a lot of dead wood on the team. And you know what they say about dead wood ? IT floats to the top.

Now here is a tune for the whiners.

  13. Jim

so, the vaunted D corps has been together for 4 games this season, and they have lost every single one of them.

the OT performance was disappointing, with faceoff losses by Karlsson and 20 being a major factor.

and the shootout attempts were really weak sauce by Theo and Roy compared to their usual SO success.

Guentzel, Buchnevich, Smith, Vatrano, Laughton……one of these guys will be a Vgk by the trade deadline.

    • knights fan in minny

vatrano and buchnevich would be good guentzel wants to much dough jake needs to prove himself without sid

    • JB

I told my wife right before Theos turn exactly what he was going to do. Fake left and throw the backhand. He does it everytime, the same move. That info gets passed among the goalies. He needs to come up with something different!

  14. Earl the Replanted Transplant

They need to bring in a good old school goon to teach these boys how to retaliate. There is no way a McSorley or Probert would allow a hit like the one on Pav w/o dropping the gloves and issuing a pounding. Bring in Doug Smith for a fighting clinic.

    • TS

Earl, agreed! Bring on an Enforcer. (Not a dirty guy like Maroon, though.) A wary opponent is a vulnerable/beatable one!

      • Earl the Replanted Transplant

Agreed, nobody dirty, but someone to open a can of whoop ass against dirty play. e.g. the elbow to the head on Pav.

    • TS

Earl, btw: your name is fun- NY!
. It made me stop and think twice!

  15. NHhell

from Stanley cup champs to “at least we got a point” against the mighty Ottawa Senators, who we beat the previous 9 times.

face it, without Jack Eichel and Mark Stone, this team is no better than a middle of the pack team, scuffling to remain in the playoff race.

  16. JB

I’m sure we are now known as a soft team. No physically at all. Desire is tied to physical play. We have none of either right now.

  17. Yes i know the preds are only 7 points back of us and have an obviously winnable game today against the woeful and back-to-back ducks this afternoon…but again no need to panic.

We are a veteran laden team…of course a lot of those veterans could be performing better at the moment…. and hopefully they will start playing like it especially with the leafs and bruins on our near horizon.

Once Jack returns and gets into game shape it will have a ripple effect on our lineup…and as ive stated before a fully healthy Carrier will allow Roy to return to his natural spot on the 4th line and be that best 4th line in hockey.

Like a lot of others i was firmly in the Cotter camp especially vs Pavel…but thats a big reversal now as we need Pav back in the lineup…i cant understand why Cotter refuses to shoot the puck…a mystery!!

Whatever winger they may try to acquire before the deadline hopefully will help…other teams are not eagerly waiting by the phone hoping to help VGK out without extracting something more in return…not sure we actually have that more regardless unfortunately….lastly i think the FO has to make room for Korczak to return in a full time role!

  18. ThG

what is with the idiot TV announcer, one track , saying same thing over and over and over again. So bad had to change channels. “VGK is 10 and 0 against OTTAWA” “VGK record against OTTAWA is..” The guy needs new material, inane worthless stats pusher.

Where was Ashley ? No where.
Then the new guy on intermission and pre game.

VGK needs to up their game on TV. Woefully inadequate. Must have left their “let’s feed TV announcer more inane useless facts to bore the TV viewers” guy at home.

  19. Rashaad

We play Toronto on the road which means this time they have last line change and we can’t match Karlsson up against Matthews.

This will be a massive challenge. I will be at the game.

  20. JB

I still have my DVR recording of last years cup winning game. Think I will go back and watch that today. Maybe get some positive vibes going for myself. Why not, can’t hurt!

  21. JB

The thrill was still there as I watched the clinching game vs Florida. Even got some goose bumps again. I don’t know what the future is for the Knights, this season and beyond, but I DO know that no one can ever take away the thrill of us winning the Stanley Cup! It’s ours forever! And Toronto can beat up on us now in regular season while we are short handed , we won the Cup! They haven’t won it in 40 years or so!

    • Richie-Rich

      JB –

I think many of us are right there with you. No one can take away that Stanley Cup. Regardless of what happens this year, Vegas Fans can hold their heads high.

We’re all waiting to see what moves are going to be made! There’s still hope for this season.

    • TS

Jb, ABSOLUTELY!! The Unlv Runnin Rebs have a single Basketball Championship in 60+ years.
Vegas had nothing else to celebrate for DECADES. And the VGK, thanks to Foley, went against the odds and started a Hockey Dynasty here. What were the odds of winning the CUP this soon, if at ALL?? Yet, here we all are, still basking in the CUP glow, so very proud of the team. This season may be one to forget, but fans will NEVER forget our CUP season! MAGICAL!!!

      • Tim

TS, Don’t sell the Running Rebels short the Vegas Golden Knights have a long way to go to match there success. From 1974 to 1991 The Running Rebels were magical as you put it.

        • TS

Agreed, Tim on the Rebs. I was at UNLV then. Tark the Shark put the magic into the sport, i feel. T&M is the ‘ house that Tark built’.We had stifling D, and the quickest pace of ANY team then. We perfected and exploited the 3- pt rule when introduced, and literally ran the scores up into the 100’s! Tark was a hardwood Genius. Innovative. Really liked him, one of my dad’s clients, got some free tickets when they played at Convention Ctr..
          Fun days.

Others soon picked it up on their games, to keep up with us! This town was proud. The VGK have done the same, ignited the city, given us all real reason to cheer for the home team! Hey, even the Reb Football team woke up this past season, won a few
          Hope springs eternal!

  22. Guys theres not just hope….there are high hopes…keep the faith…the barrel has been bottomed…the near and immediate future is bright…the CUP still has to travel through Vegas!!

  23. NAM

It’s not a lot of fun being a fan in survival mode after being so dominating last year, but here we are. Get into the playoffs w/ some health should be our only goal right now. We definitely need a player or two from trades, IMO. I still maintain losing Smith was bigger than is obvious. Pre-barbashhev, VGK had 4 good lines and just needed to *strengthen* L1 so Barb was a great addition. However, giving up Smith for him only kept strength at L1, but killed Karl’s elite line and really the backbone line of this team for a number of years now. Smith was 3rd on the team last year in goals, 4th in points, and an elite defender. You could put Ammo or any one with Karl/Smith and it was an elite defensive line that can still score. Cassidy builds lines with pairs and all season so far it is only solo Karl with a new partner/line every game (injuries aside). I think we need Smith back *or* someone else with similar skills to pair with Karl for any kind of real playoff run.

    • Richie-Rich

Very good observation NAM. Agree 100%. I’d like to see a younger version of Smith, but bringing him back for a Cup run would be a huge boost to the team and the fan base. With the exception of Dorofeyev, I haven’t seen much promise out of our AHL affiliate. There’s still potential for Brisson and Cormier and a few others, but they are not NHL ready.

  24. I totally disagree on Smith…he had slowed down last year and it seems based on his production this year that aspect hasnt changed.

  25. I appreciate that TS…as with the 1973 Mets…Ya gotta believe’ and I do…the small…and gaping mistakes will be corrected and with a healthier team we become a deep team again…Go Knights Go!
