Recap: The Golden Knights were looking to start off their four-game road trip with a victory over the New York Rangers. Both teams were feeling each other out in the opening period until Vegas drew a late-period power play. Jack Eichel gave the Golden Knights the opening lead of the game with his 17th goal of 2024-25.
New York immediately evened the score 78 seconds into the middle frame. However, Eichel ripped another puck into the Rangers net to regain the Golden Knights lead.
The Rangers tied the game five minutes into the final period on the power play. The home team took a 3-2 lead six minutes later. Vegas committed a late hooking penalty which New York took advantage of doubled their advantage.
The Golden Knights record drops to 31-16-6 falling to the Rangers 4-2 at Madison Square Garden. Vegas will remain in the Empire State as they prepare to face the New York Islanders on Tuesday. Puck drop against the Islanders is scheduled for 4:30 PM. (Recap by Jason)
Analysis: Vegas’ offense dried up in a hurry at Madison Square Garden on a Sunday afternoon. They came out looking quite dangerous and all four lines were generating, but as the game went on the chances became fewer and further between. An Eichel goal on the power play and another off the rush were the only goals against Jonathan Quick. With New York off the back-to-back, this is a really poor loss. (Recap by Ken)

NYR when trailing entering 3rd: 1-20-1
VGK facing backup goalie: 18-2-0
VGK facing team on 2nd of B2B: 8-1-0

VGK's PK has been picked apart tonight. A beautiful passing play ends up on Panarin's stick. That will never end well.
— SinBin.vegas (@SinBinVegas) February 3, 2025
Eichel tried to do too much with that clearance. Was looking to make something happen on the break the other way and it ends up in the net. I'm not gonna blame Eichel tonight though. 2-2

I want to start out by saying we are all SAAD that the VGK dropped another game. Jonathan Quick picks up his 400th victory with the win today.
Since I want to stay positive, Eichel once again was the standout. That’s about as positive as I can get. Petro has been pretty sketchy during this stretch.
The Rangers, on a back to back night, outshot the VGK 12-7 in the 3rd period.
There are 29 games remaining. That’s 58 points on the board. Raking in 5 out of every 20 points obviously isn’t going to get the job done. That gives the VGK 15 to 20 points and a season ending total of 83 to 88 points.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier. Three more games before the break.

Hill is getting repeatedly beat short side high blocker. The book is out. LT would look pretty good is a VGK uniform right now. On the bright side Lavoie looked good. Between him and Schwindt, VGK is nailing the waiver wire.

I agree with the coach after this game. Don’t be frustrated. Better to get pissed off. Team appears passive at long stretches and seems already on break. I’m thinking it’s time for a team meeting. Closed door meeting. Players only. Stone, earn your C. Do it now. All of you are together on the road. Waiting for the next three road games and see what happens after the break may be too late. Shouldn’t have to say anything. Check your record of late and the current standings. It says it all.

When you can’t post something positive it’s probably better not to post anything at all. Guess there is nothing positive – they are in trouble. Maybe Tuesday night will be kind to them – let’s hope so.

Quicker teams are lighting them up like a Roman Candle.
Play “Rope a Dope” to wear the bigger team down, then press, for the kill.

As Barkley might say….Charles and not Gnarls….TURRIBLE TURRIBLE TURRIBLE!!
From playing such a dangerous offensive first period to letting the rangers take over so much play as the game progressed and on a B2B and with their backup goalie…just simply unacceptable.
Unlike Ken…..Eichel does not get a pass from me (no pun intended) in not clearing the zone ‘and looking for a break’….he had already been out with Stone for 40 seconds…even if there had been a break they were out of gas….the only play is to ice the puck and get fresh legs out there!
On to the 2 worst parts of the night as far as VGK is concerned….I dont know what the story is with Pietrangelo…i give him props for being a warrior….but dammit his overall play is really hampering us…he is slow…error prone and if presented an opportunity misses the net wide…and i mean WIDE almost every time…the best thing I could see right now is a trip to LTIR which would free up that indigestable salary he is paid so we could bring someone in at the deadline.
Next….the goalie…..I have been on his side and defended Hill all year…but that has come to an unfortunate screeching halt….he is flopping around like a beached fish….sooooo far out of position far toooo often….and when is needed to make a save does not come through….that puck squeezing between his legs is a prime example.
On the positive side Saad did not look too far out of place in his first game….Lavoie had prime scoring chances which unfortunately he couldnt put one in but hope it helps his confidence…and thank you Jack for listening….and shooting the damn puck!!
I am not one to whine over a loss and that the sky is falling …but and its a big but…
TURRIBLE TURRIBLE TURRIBLE!!
larry
On the even more cheery note….a look ahead to the month of april finds the %$^&*( oilers playing the sharks 3 times….and we end the season on the road and on a back to back….huh!!!!

Spot on Larry. Unfortunately I couldnt agree more with your take on things.

Foley must be fuming right about now.
One thing is for sure…this current roster is cannon fodder in the first round, IF they are able to back into the playoffs.

I notice all the it’s just January crowd has disappeared. This team has numerous red flags. Petras speed and mistakes and general team slowness. Inconsistent goal tending. The fact you have to put a 4th line grinder
On yout top line to even up lines. Tells you how desperate they are for a top line winger
. Problem is they don’t have any capital to trade. The positive is Lavoie keeps getting better. I like his speed and strength. Also Saad will add speed and depth. Trades are needed but running out of bullets. Losing Thompson was a major error and got nothing for him.

So 4GH struck again. (That’s 4 goal hill). Our D so overrated and weak in front of net. I still think we have some good talent, but we just aren’t playing with any urgency/heart/enthusiasm! Not a SC contender, at the moment.

Yeh, but who wants to pay the price for playoff tickets to see this bunch?
Butch Cassidy
I wouldn’t. 2 years ago I decided to skip all playoffs until the Stanley Cup. Thankfully I bought tickets for game 5 and I saw them lift the cup.
This year, they are getting bounced first round.
The Stanley Cup win was ultimately lucky like the Carolina and St Louis wins, facing worn down injured teams but they still count even if you win in off years

Had the game in control up to the point of giving up the PP goals. Saad looks like he’ll work out. Speedy, strong on the puck, good on the boards/forechecker, knows how to score, should fill that hole on the 3rd line and leaves option
open to Cassidy to play on the top line if Barbashev continues to be unable to find the back of the net.
This team needs the February break to regroup and come back fresh which has worked before. Meanwhile I am not giving up all hope for these next three games. If they can just stay healthy including getting Karlsson back for the playoffs. Health is most important for the playoffs like 2023.

Story here is BIG HIT on petrangelo, and no one mentions it. Says all you need to know. Coach puts entire team in a blender, and expects instant results ? Pretty obvious some of these line combinations didn’t work with players running into each other, or going to same spot on the ice. Saad was no factor, evidently bringing in veteran didn’t result in immediate “return” on the goods on the ice. There is a reason the Blues couldn’t deal him. Hope it was for salary constraints. This is future of VGK if they are stuck in similar situation in future. No return on investments is no way to run a franchise. But that is how bettman runs his socialistic NHL. Good teams are punished and left holding their nuts in their hand.
Now back to hit on no. 7. Was that justified ? No. Hague’s response was correct. The team did not respond. That is sick.
Meanwhile Trump is throwing out the trash. The federal government is being gutted like Argentina. Canada and MExico need to step up and stop flooding USA with drugs. Only the drug addicts here could possibly be against this move.

Coaching move reeks of desperation. No finishers on the team. Need to start playing as team, hard to do so when coaching staff keeps putting bottom feeders on top lines.

Art of deal , or art of steal ?
Well, that didn’t take long. Just one day after President Trump slapped tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, the financial fallout has already begun. On Saturday, Canada’s dollar sank to its lowest level since 2003, while Mexico’s peso took a 2% dive, sending shockwaves through their economies.
The numbers are brutal:
The Canadian dollar dropped 1.4% to roughly C$1.47 per U.S. dollar.
The Mexican peso fell over 2% to 21.15 per U.S. dollar.
If you listen to the so-called “experts,” Mexico is on the verge of economic collapse. Gabriela Siller, chief economist at Banco Base, warned that if Trump’s tariffs stay in place, Mexico could enter a “profound recession” that might take years to recover from. And you know what? That’s the point.

and the coach said it recently….the goaltending is simply not good enough.

The VGK are not playing their game, this is not the same team from the beginning of the season. I have to wonder how many are limping to the break. Time to scratch some players; Petro, Roy, and Barbie come to mind. They were a better team prior to Roy and Barbie coming back. Not going to even get into the goaltending; it is sloppy at best. We may have another long summer of high heat and less hockey.
