Recap: The Golden Knights were looking for their third straight with a victory over the New York Islanders. Midway through the opening period defenseman Noah Hanifin snapped the scoreless tie. Minutes later Mitch Marner scored his sixth of the season off a rebound. With time winding down the Islanders cut Vegas’ lead to 2-1.
New York tied the game quickly in the middle frame with a deflection near the net. Ten minutes later the Islanders took a 3-2 edge.
Ivan Barbashev immediately tied the game with an acrobatic diving backhand. New York regained their one goal advantage on the power play. Vegas’ Pavel Dorofeyev forced overtime with the net empty and seconds remaining.
After an uneventful overtime the game was decided in a shootout. The Islanders won the game with one shootout goal.
The Golden Knights record drops to 14-6-9 falling to the Islanders 5-4 in OT. Next up, Vegas will face the Flyers on Thursday night in Philadelphia. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 PM. (Recap by Jason)
Analysis: It was a rare high-event 1st period in a VGK/NYI game but the Golden Knights came out on the right side of it. Both teams had a bunch of offensive looks and VGK capitalized. The 2nd was another slog for the Golden Knights and it put them in a hole they had to chase in the 3rd. They tied it quickly early and then again late playing some of their best hockey of the game down the stretch. Couldn’t take advantage of the PP in OT and then the shootout was a trainwreck. Pretty good effort tonight , So glad we have a NHL calibre Goalie, Like Cassidy said i hope he isn’t playing over his head , he handles the puck so well i think our guys are starting to loosen up a bit knowing we have a professional in net. Second thought If someone was to tally all the wasted time Jack Eichel takes on the pp and 3 on three without really creating opportunities i think we would all be surprised . I wish he would take a afternoon and watch Mcdavid tapes and how he moves on the pp and creates so many more scoring opportunity’s . On the shoot out i am tired of watching Eichel shoot on the goalies pads at 1/2 speed . if he is going to shoot he needs to come in at warp speed that’s his strength, let give Bowman a try maybe even Hannifin . Final comment. Foley should petion the NHL to change the game to have 4th periods that’s how this team wants to win games or maybe omit the second period , sheesh .

VGK is now halfway to tying the record for most OT losses of 18. With 12 of the 29 games so far going to overtime, they are on pace to have 20 more OT games.. They’ll be lots of chances to break the record! With the way Eichel dominates the puck in OT without really doing anything, and the poor history of success of the entire team in the shootout, it is almost assured they will break the record.
JB
Just remember, these OT “losses” as you say, are worth one point. Very important in regular season!
TS
JB, All and all, considering they haven’t played their best hockey thus far, 2nd in the Pacific is a pretty good spot, and as you said, getting those OT points add up. I believe they will get better through the season , barring major injuries, of course.
The best is yet to come!
JB
Fortunate to get a point. Good first, crappy second (again), tied late n third, then, totally wasted a 4 on 3 in OT. I agree on Jack, just a mystery on how he plays sometime. On to Philly.
Vic
Team played pretty well and a point was recorded versus a team getting tougher to play against. Usually very smart McNabb changed the rhythm of the game with the late hit on the superstar kid which woke up the Isles. Then the dreaded late period goal. Would love to see Schmid keep the net as #1 until he loses it.
DL
Another pitiful OT and SO. Nothing burger on the PP opportunity and shootout attempts. Do they practice this at all or is it just left to pure luck. Cuz it looks so discombobulated. Maybe if they did it would look much better, be more organized and increase their chances at winning more games. At this point, those extra points could mean the difference of making the playoffs or not.
Emmanuel
It would take an Irwin Allen production for this team to miss the playoffs…….
question is how far can they advance past the first round?
Leonard Wise
Yes, I,m tired of overtime but in reality it would help if we were good enough to win these in regulation. The problem with this team is poor decision making by management in acquiring depth. Scissons, Smith,Lazon, Saad just don’t produce. I know Lazon is injured but he only played 20 games last year. Ken is right this is not how a championship team plays. Bring people up or trade. Bowman is a good first start but would prefer a shooter like Marchy on that line and move Bowman into Saads/Smith position. I think they used Hart tonight since Philadelphia would have been problematic.
Emmanuel
Great summary.
I would add that a Smith/Karlsson/Stone 3rd line would be brutal to play against, especially in the playoffs, well at least try it & stick with it if they produce enough middle 6 offense.
NAM
…but stone, marner, howden are producing now, why would you break that up? Marner back with Hertl/Doro isn’t better and didn’t pop before. Instead make Smith/Karl and I guess Kolesar (I don’t like it, but he isn’t going any where) your 4th line. That is a pretty good 4 line rotation. Then trade deadline moves then are to shore up either Eichels wing or Hertls wing or both.
Emmanuel
Or Marner/Karlsson/Stone (dayummmm) lotsa options.
Howdens not a top 6er IMHO, use him as a Swiss Army Knife.
Richie-Rich
There’s some excellent talent ready for a try out. I’ve seen enough of the bottom 6. Kolesar and Smith still bring some good defense and board work. Sissons, Saad are two the VGK can do without.

#55…..29 games and not one friggin goal.
the Vgk 4th line is pathetically bad. it is the reason that the top guys are overextended to score late and just to lose all these OT and SO games….and then the Olympic weariness and travel on top of that?
I figure that the Vgk top guys will have very little left in the tank come playoff time, and that can be placed on the failure of the F.O. to provide the depth that is necessary to “roll 4 lines”
Emmanuel
“Roll 4 lines”……ROFL!
Larry
Besides my obvious obsession with being rid of Saad once and for all, my next target is a fan favorite, great teammate and seemingly all-around good guy, but I think when Karlsson returns it’s time to healthy scratch Kolesar and build around Sissons(for now anyway) and Reinhardt ( for now anyway) and Howden, just a thought.
Pistol Pete
Tying it up with 12 seconds left was a point well-earned imo. Would have been nice to catch a break in OT or the SO and get another point. In any case these OTL points add up and it shows in the points pace: 37/29 x 82 =104.621
We’ll get the bottom six figured out when Karlsson returns. Still think scratch Sissons for Howden is a viable option.

I am on travel vacation to Florida. I’ve been watching the games. Carter Hart seems to be the guy to beat out in goal! Maybe the FO finally has solved this ongoing problem!
Discredit to Korczak for being out of position on this one leaving his side wide open. I get what he was attempting to do, but it failed. Otherwise, the VGK looked great to me, and bonus with Dorofeyev finally netting a goal after 11 games. Good omen?
Philadelphia is going to be a tough game.

OTL:
VGK: 9
LAK: 8
COL: 7
PIT: 7
STL: 7
I’ll take the points. Don’t forget all those posts, crossbars and stand on his head saves by the opposing goalie.
