VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3 NEW YORK ISLANDERS 2 (28-14-6, 62 PTS)

Recap: The Golden Knights suited up for a back-to-back on the road. Vegas took the opening lead for the second straight night 11:52 into the 1st period. Ivan Barbashev picked up his 12th goal and Alex Pietrangelo recorded his 18th assist of the season. The reigning Stanley Cup champions took a 1-0 lead into the 1st intermission.

The scoring picked up in the middle frame with each team lighting the lamp. First New York evened the score 3:35 into the period but Vegas quickly responded. Sheldon Rempal regained the Golden Knights lead with his first career NHL goal and a couple of shifts later Nic Roy extended it to 3-1.

The Islanders tightened the score with a shorthanded goal midway through the final frame. Vegas held off a late 6-on-5 to secure a 3-2 victory.

The Golden Knights record improves to 28-14-6 defeating the Islanders 3-2 in New York. Vegas will continue their road trip on Friday against the New York Rangers. Puck drop from Madison Square Garden is scheduled for 4 PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: After a defensive game that upset Bruce Cassidy, the Golden Knights responded with a much better defensive effort in this one. They allowed a bundle of shots but they were excellent at boxing out in front and keeping the Isles out of the dangerous areas. Offensively they capitalized on a few blunders from New York and made it hold up. (Analysis by Ken)

Hilly 41 saves. That some sums up the game. Ok, also, Butch spoke, the boys listened. Big 2 points.

  2. Niggles

Nice ‘W’ tonight and congrats to Hill with 42 saves on his first night back. Keep rolling!

  3. Pistol Pete

Ahead of last year’s All-Star break pace which is pretty impressive considering the injuries are deeper this year.

Last year: 62 pts (51 games)

This year (with 2 games left): 62 pts (48 games)

Great effort Hilly and congrats to Rempal for becoming the umpteenth Knight to score their first VGK goal.

    Game 48 Analysis VGK 3, NYI 2

There are 34 games remaining in the season and 2 left until the all-star break. The VGK have racked up 3 of the total 8 points on this road trip so far. I think the VGK is going to turn Cassidy’s hair gray or it’s going to start falling out. Untimely penalties and almost give up two shorties on the same power play. Poor decision after poor decision passing the puck to the other team and turning it over. Very frustrating, but despite all of it they come away with the victory.

Aidin Hill? Outstanding play stopping 43 shots on goal.

    My 3 stars:
***Sheldon Rempal gets a Star for his first NHL goal in 13 total games
    ** Nic Roy
    * Hill with the #1 Star

Getting Hill back is a huge plus. Hope to keep both healthy going forward.

The VGK are tied for 5th in the league with 62 points with the Stars. Edmonton keeps on rolling with their 13th victory in a row. Vancouver is now on a 3 game winning streak and sits on top of the league with 68 points.

Next up is the Rangers on Friday (game 49) and Detroit (game 50) on Saturday. It will be interesting to see who starts in net on Friday. I am thinking Hill plays against New York and Thompson against Detroit.

  6. Pistol Pete

Nice move by Cassidy scratching Brisson for Rempal!

a little more size from remp that was a hell of shot for his goal i would like to see him get some more time this week

  7. Vic

Out shot, out hit, but not out scored. Several guys stepping up going all out.

Very sad to see the rink desecrated with rainbow ads, but this is the NHL.

  8. As i suggested…the defense played much better…i guess there was nowhere but up after the devils game lol……loads of shots and saves for Hill…welcome back Adin!!….but the high danger chances were virtually non-existent as opposed to all the slot shots the devils had…let us all remember this as far as the overall defense is concerned…when we have our players…our healthy players….we roll 4 lines out there…we generate scoring chances…we forecheck heavily….we maintain the puck..control the puck…our 4 lines take the heat off the defense…it also allows the D-men to pinch in..try and create because there is the knowledge that one of the forwards is knowlegably covering their spot…once we come out of the all star break…we end the oilers 15 game winning streak and then have a relatively light schedule the rest of the month of february!!

  9. Tim

In hockey it’s all about the goalie and Hill was up to the task.

    where is the love ?

  11. JB

Happy for the kid! Works hard, has been a good scorer with the silver boys.

  12. Jim

Great job by Hill. Now you know how the Vgk won the cup.

the Vgk effort in the 3rd period was simply disappointing. 3 dumb penalties by vets who should know better, and they spent the entire period in their own zone, playing rope a dope, instead of dumping it deep and forechecking in the Islander zone.

64 shots by NY, 42 on goal, 40 saves by Hill.

the PP nearly handed the game to NY with that shorthanded goal.

No, they won this game because of Hill, but that is how injuries to goalies happen, by them being overtaxed, under siege, and under unnecessary pressure all game long.

Happy they won, but the formula is simply not sustainable, as the previous game demonstrated very clearly.

  13. Henderson's Finest

I see on CapFriendly that Isiah Saville is listed as “Set to Roster”. I have never seem that before. Can someone help out with what that means?

    • Not sure entirely what that distinction means. However, I can tell you that he was called up under emergency conditions and then returned when Hill came back.

  14. Jose

Thank you thank you. Good things come to those who wait and finally you have come through for me again.

What I would do to have the opportunity to do illegal things to her.
