COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS 6 VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2 (33-22-7, 73 PTS)

Recap: The Golden Knights were looking to avoid a three game skid with a victory in Columbus. The Blue Jackets jumped out to an early lead and followed up with a second goal seven minutes later. Vegas fought back late in the period to score two goals in less than a minute. First Mason Morelli recorded his third goal of the season and William Karlsson added his 22nd. The two teams were locked in a 2-2 tie going into the first intermission.

Late in the period Columbus broke the tie to take a 3-2 edge. In his return to the lineup Jack Eichel took four shots on net through 40 minutes.

The home team doubled their lead 3:23 into the final frame. Chandler Stephenson got Vegas within one but Columbus answered right back a couple of shifts later. With time winding down the Blue Jackets sealed their victory with an empty net goal.

The Golden Knights record drops to 33-22-7 losing to the Blue Jackets 6-3. Vegas wrapped up their Eastern Conference road trip at 1-3-1 and will hit home ice on Thursday night. Puck drop against the first place Vancouver Canucks is scheduled for 7 PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: Another slow start left the Golden Knights once again staring at a deficit. Again, they got themselves out of it but again the same problems then cropped up again. Sloppy turnovers followed by goalies not being able to pick the team up. A miserable end to a miserable road trip. (Analysis by Ken)

I’m not going to contribute to what is going to be a bitch fest on here but as a fan I am completely on board with whatever the front office is going to do this week. They deserve the benefit of the doubt. If they want to give up s 1st, 2nd and Brisson for Guentzel then so be it. How can I not be confident that they will proceed with the right decisions this week.

In my opinion if I were running the team I would NOT give up future assets and go all in. I believe that the 2023-24 Vegas Golden Knights are not good enough. This is not a knee jerk over reaction to what has conspired on this road trip. This is from 4 months of sub par play. I was going to call it mediocrity but they have the 25th best record since November 5th so it’s been 4 bad months.

I’m not calling it the end of their competitive window but I believe this year it is not meant to be. I would like to go into the offseason with Pavel Dorofeyev, Brendan Brisson, David Edstrom and our 1st and 2nd round picks. Take a shot at it this year with the roster you already have and go for it again next year.

    • Tim

Rashaad in the other article you mentioned that a team has usually lottery protection in our acquiring Ottawa’s pick there was no condition because they were penalized so I don’t this there is maybe Ken could chime in. If it isn’t lottery protected that’s a valuable trade chip.

    • DeezNutz

I’m with you 100% Rashaad. Do not give up any picks for players because I don’t even think McDavid fixes this disaster. The team is fully cooked and they haven’t even looked consistently good since November.

      • NAM

If you want to be technical. They didn’t even look good before November. The big win streak to start the year was some pretty awful hockey, but as Bruce said they aren’t playing very good, but “they are finding a way to win”. Then after the streak they stopped finding a way to win. So point being is this 2023-24 team is not even close to the season before even from the beginning. The difference is no Kessel and no Reilly Smith. Not to mention a complete over haul in coaching staff. Doesn’t seem like much but the proof is in the results.

  2. EZE

I watch the Reno Ice Raiders up here in Northern Nevada. A single A hockey team that would give the VGK a run for their money. They don’t get paid and they have twice the hustle than the VGK. Too late to get my Knighttime subscription refunded?

    • SMH

By all means, please stay up there in the Nevada redneck boonies and pretend that your peewee team could compete with the defending Stanley Cup champions (who up until tonight have been playing without ~30% of their salary cap team). If you want to switch your allegiance to a closer geographic NHL team, I hear that the mighty San Jose Sharks are looking for fans who know very little about hockey!

    • TS

EZE, now, now, I realize Reno Has ALWAYS had an Inferiority complex VS Vegas. The envy and dislike for anything Vegas is decades- long. But, comparing Vgk to your ” Ice Raiders” is pretty absurd! The ONLY thing Reno beats Vegas in is Snow Sports like skiing, and that’s because there’s actual SNOW in the Reno/ Tahoe area! Vegas is the reason this state is so prosperous, and YOUR city is largely funded by state tax dollars( gaming taxes, esp.), 75% of which come from VEGAS! So STOP BASHING VEGAS, ALREADY! ( BTW, I’m from Reno, and have been embarrassed by the nasty attitudes that Reno folks have had toward Vegas…the Reno UNR Football fans used to attend Vegas games wearing shirts that said ” F…CK VEGAS”!! Nasty bunch of fans. Do YOU own one of those shirts, by chance??

      • TS

Forgot to mention the UNR Wolfpack…their teams give UNLV fits! But HOCKEY?? In your Ice Dreams, EZE!

    • niggles

Knighttime+ refund!? Hahahaha. What a cheapskate!!! You’re not a fan if you abandon ship and demand a refund. Piss off!

  3. former season ticket holder

As the song goes…. There’s something going on… this is beyond coincidence

  4. Rashaad

Just want to add that I am not an angry fan. Last year was a blast. Everything thankfully fell into place healthwise in the playoffs. Perhaps it was a bit too ambitious to think that they could just turn on a switch and become elite after a mushy middle of the season like they did last year. 2023 Stanley Cup Champions and nobody can take that away.

  5. DeezNutz

This is not a good team. GM needs to trade as many players a humanly possible this week and look to re-tool for the rest of Jack’s contract. Too many garbage performances and to be honest the team hasn’t been above average since early November minus a game here and there. This team doesn’t have scoring talent and now the defense and goaltending is trash. Too many complacent and lazy players this year that need to go. I would even trade Marchy at this point to make a statement plus he’s the only player that has any value to other teams. Martinez needs to go yesterday he’s a terrible hockey player now. Thanks for the cup I really appreciate it but it’s now time to go play for a bottom feeder while you collect your final paycheck. Also, signing both Hill and Barbashev to 5 million each per year was clearly a big mistake. I’m sick and tired of watching these guys

Not going to happen, they will go all in on another Cup run.
      Need:
      1 health
      2 legit scoring LW
      3 Defensive D

    • Rashaad

I usually disagree with you DeezNutz but when you say this is not a good team it’s hard for me to intelligently argue that point since they have been bad since November 5th. I always knew that scoring could dry up, power play could go bad, but I never thought that the defence core would be this bad.

However, I don’t think that they should trade players off their roster and rebuild and I am also not angry, just disappointed. I love this team and what they did, not just last year but since their inception.

For those of you who disagree with me, I respect that.

  6. Jim

can they trade mental mistakes? cuz THAT is what is beating them….. they are beating themselves, as the sheriff said.

they should trade in their gloves for silver platters, cuz that is what they are handing to the opponents.

one trade ain’t gonna fix this mess.

and ? the 6 dmen, who were a solid reason for the cup, but this season they are nothing but pylons and turnover machines.

and the goaltending is affected by it.

  7. knights fan in minny

struggle struggle struggle what the hell a goalie with 4 wins

  8. Tim

Well we showed the hockey world how to go from the Penthouse to the Outhouse. Guentzel I think is a bad move on an expiring contract. Web need more then one winner and not sure how Guentzel will perform without Crosby. Let’s hope management is smarter then us or were in trouble. We still have 20 games enough left time for a run but our pickups will be key.

  9. Richie-Rich

    Game 62 Analysis CBJ 6 VGK 3

In a must win situation the VGK continues to bleed out. There’s not much to cheer about right now. Overall, this team isn’t even a shadow of itself. Too slow, poor puck management, poor passing, poor turnovers and nothing at all seems to be going well. At one point Martinez was demoted and Hague promoted to D1.

Outskated, outplayed, outhustled. Those are the 3 stars of the game.

There are 20 games remaining in the season. Win half of them and that will get the VGK to 93 points and likely not going to be good enough to make the playoffs. Only 8 of those 20 games are against non-playoff teams. But that doesn’t even seem to matter. The BlueJackets are one of the worst teams in hockey (-45 gf/ga) and the Golden Knights simply got outplayed in almost every aspect of the game.

The front office is going to have to decide whether or not to be a buyer or a seller at the trade deadline.

While there is still hope, it’s fading fast. Next up is Vancouver at home on Thursday. The Predators and Kings could leapfrog the Knights tomorrow night pushing the Golden Knights down to the 2nd playoff spot. The Blues (W2) 67, Flames (W5) 65, and Wild (W1) 64 are trailing but coming on strong. Calgary has a game in hand at this point.

Don’t you just love when they change what you write it drives me bonkers you type something and they change what you write, I’m not into proof reading so sorry why some words don’t make sense.

  12. Earl the Replanted Transplant

This team needs a definite re-tool and not a re-build. Don’t use draft capital for this season. Might as well pull a Pittsburgh when they went for Lemieux, and play a lot of AHL players for the rest of the season and go for some more draft picks. Last year was great and they got the Cup in 6, but that team is done. Keep Karly, Eichel, Stephenson, and Roy. Kolesar, Cotter, Hague, Whitecloud, Marty, and a few others need to go. I also think Morelli is showing signs of a good 4th line guy. Stone should retire for his health and the team, can’t keep having the Captain on LTIR. Waiting for the Hate to come my way LOL.

    Just my stupid opinion.

    • Rashaad

Hey Earl the Replanted Transplant, looks like you and I are on the same page.

There is an old saying that the players dictate to the general manager what to do at the trade deadline. Crosby does not want his buddy Guentzel traded but their GM will move him because of the players performance. I believe that this teams performance over the last 4 months is telling Kelly McCrimmon to proceed with caution.

    • David T

Now, not stupid. Stone is getting old and his body is taking a beating. This year is toast for the VGK.

    • NAM

It’s no stupid-er than my realistically same opinion.

  13. knights fan in minny

congrats to wild bill 400 points

  14. David T

And the losses continue to pile on. VGK are playing with no heart. They are playing sloppy. Their chance of winning another Stanley Cup (back to back) are extremely unlikely. This is painful to watch.

  15. NHhell

Cotter to NY Rangers for Matt Rempe, the tough kid who will light a fire under the uninspired VGK and drag them into the fight.

    • Richie-Rich

Rangers aren’t selling. You need to look for pearls at the bottom of the NHL barrel on the east coast. Rangers are nowhere near the bottom of the barrel. The sellers will be teams like San Jose, Arizona, Anaheim, and Columbus.

Not much help, and the cost would be enormous.

After last night’s shit show, I’d be shedding the UFAs and getting what I can for them from eastern conference contenders. Yes, that includes:

      Stephenson
      Marchessault
      Amadio
      Froese
      Martinez
      Carrier

All the above are UFAs and at this point, in my humble opinion are expendable. I think that the VGK might get some excellent prospects that might help us this year, but certainly would be good for next year.

This team is sucking right now and all of the positivity was sucked out of the room by losing to one of the worst teams in the league last night. It was a piss poor effort, but not unexpected from a team that has been playing horrible hockey since early November.

I’d be looking for top prospects. A scoring winger, goaltender, and one or two defenseman along with scalable picks from teams that give up a higher pick if they make it to the SCF.

I am now firmly in the camp that a SCF repeat is not in reach, and making the playoffs is no longer guaranteed.

Selling is the absolutely the right move.

  16. Pathic and painful to watch. How something that was good could fall to their current level is sad to witness. They don’t seem to care until they get behind, then pour it on for a shift or two without results and fall right back. This game wasn’t much different than the ass kicking they got in Buffalo – in fact the third period came close to being identical. As a fan who supports this team but a realist in the same breath, I will be shocked if they even make the playoffs. Their mental attitude to win is lacking but what’s worse they don’t seem to care. Yes, they talk about it but actions not words are what is necessary and whether you like it or not Cassidy refuses to make excuses for them which I admire. He is not the problem; he has 20 plus guys who are just collecting a paycheck and definitely not earning one.

  17. ThG

best thing about today is the 9 to ZERO ruling putting to bed the far left lib tard garbage regarding insurrection on jan 6th, which the blue state SOSs tried to use to kick Trump off the ballot.

complete and utter failure by the morons on the left proving they don’t know how constitution works at all, and how much they hate our constitution, our elections, and our republic.

I piss and fart in their general direction. Colorado, Maine, Illinois all loser states with idiot SOSs.

  18. Hockeydiva

Way to go, guys. A complete meltdown right before playoffs provided we make the playoffs. Geez that game in Columbus was an abortion.

  19. Bobby

To go from beating the Leafs IN Toronto when they were virtually unstoppable, breaking their winning streak, to, ummm- this? Doesn’t make any sense. My only thought is the players are freaking out over the trade deadline. A self fulfilling prophecy I would suggest.

  20. Vic

Saddest part of this funk is we are cheated out of watching hockey as things have become unwatchable. Not testing an untested goalie with horrible numbers and allowing a guy who had 15 goals over six seasons score 3 made this the biggest horror show yet. On top of that, only 11 hits by the VGK while one of their guys had 8 himself. The pattern has been the VGK miss the easy goals and then you can see their heads down, and then an easy giveaway goal the other way. GM should consider all deals to shake things up without giving up the future. Aside from contracts and no-trade clauses, only three keepers…9, 71, and 27. Stone gets one more chance and then it could be the end. Thanks for the cup, but now sharpen the pencils and set things up for the future.

    • ThG

i think the team was dazzled by all the glittering lights, night clubs, and entertainment of down town columbus ! They were surely distracted.

it’s obvious the team is playing hurt now. pretty darn obvous.

let’s see how the FO handles this situation.

they certainly are short more than a few aces in their deck of cards to pull off a competitive deal

they are between a rock and Tim’s lazy boy, I mean , between a rock and a hard place. Doubt Tim’s chair is any where near being a “hard place” at his age !

  21. JV

Would not bring anyone in right now and waste assets. This is a one and done team in the playoffs. Might move a few out if possible. Martinez seems to have fallen off the cliff. Still oossible to get something for him.

  22. Tim

Bill Foley is from West Point he’s not going to give up on the season it’s not his mentality to quit. Now that being said who’s going and who’s staying that may upset a lot of fans but management isn’t concerned about how we feel. I personally could care less about our draft picks they usually don’t work out anyway. Payton Krebs and Cody Glass proved that. You draft kids that take a few years to make it to the NHL where as you trade your draft picks for players that have been through the minors or AHL and are NHL ready. Keep the few young good players we have to build on.

    • ThG

hey old man Glass had a hat trick the other nite, and he is still very young.

WAKE UP , get up off the floor !! You fell off your lazy boy yet again. The dog is yelping !

    • VGK Fan

      You nailed it Tim:

Glass 2 goals in 33 games excluding is recent hat trick.
Krebs 3 goals in 60 games.

Other than Suzuki no big players drafted by VGK.

I can see why people don’t mind seeing VGK move draft picks out.

  23. Perro

Where’s the ministry of propaganda to tell us how good we actually played tonight, and somehow spending a grip of cash on a trade deadline Acquisition will make us GREAT again?

I was told last game too bad….. so sad

    That is correct

Too bad…….. it IS too bad that the fans spend there HARD earned money on tickets, jerseys, meet and greets and its too bad the players can’t at least TRY HARD the ENTIRE game.

SO SAD……… yep!! Completely sad because we know how they CAN play when they really WANT to. You know. The whole Edmonton shut down and the Toronto game. Destroying the best players in the league Mc fuckface and Matthews..

Eichels back, things were supposed to be better…… oh waip…. the ENTIRE team been asleep at the wheel since the winter classic.

Anyone want to buy some amazing tickets to watch the rest of the year? I gotta figure out if im keeping season tickets , but I got glass seats at Enterprise in St Louis on the 25th and Nashville the next day. I paid more for tickets than I made in salary this year…. I woukd be HAPPY with the cost of them if the team tried hard and just lost cause they weren’t any good….. the fact that I’ve watched almost every game since inception, I KNOW what it looks like when they aren’t trying the entire game and it has me kinda bitter

  24. Tim

Everyone has been busting my balls this year about the shortcomings I saw in the Knights way back when and since everyone knows I’m a big baseball fan posters said go to your baseball and leave us hockey fans alone. Well the objectiveness on my Knight observations is what it is and now all of you realize this team has had problems for a large part of the season. The problem with fans is they lose rational with where there team is. A quote from Bill Parcells is so true ( You are what your record says you are ) that cuts through all the bull-shit.

comparing this slump to last major slump two years ago, when the team was decimated with injuries (just like it is now). PBD head was on the chopping block, yet
he managed to coach the team with game that were not complete wipe outs. Nearly every game was competitive. PBD’s team lost in last week of the schedule missing the playoffs. Many games went to OT or were one goal games. The whiner posters here, like Tim, were calling for the coach’s head on a pike.

Has Bruce lost the locker room ? The players sure are not responding like they did under PBD. Was sending no. 6 to the minors a major mistake?
Are no. 2 and no 23 playing hurt ?
Are the forwards mentally exhausted from last year’s play off run?
Are the goalies having eye problems, flinching at pucks with their
legs and gloves, which are not there?
Why have the d men all of a sudden stopped blocking shots ?

Vancouver up next, which team will show up, Jeckyll or Hyde ?

Will another player come off the IR.

The Canucks are chomping at the bit for this game. Look out !

    • Tim

Who’s calling for Cassidy’s head more bull-shit from the famous or infamous THG.
This guy who actually is intelligent for what ever reason being neglected in childhood, bullied in school, or just plain unhappy in life has to lash out at people I guess to feed his ego. Putting people down is just a sign of insecurity but you know were all Gods children and he didn’t make us all the same.

  28. Walt

The onus is on the veteran players for this mess. You know that Henderson guys are only stopgap measures with occasional bonus contributions like Morelli has provided.

But the veteran 6 dmen deserve plenty of blame for their pathetic performance, and the veteran forwards who have been there have been equally at fault.

when bottom feeder teams beat you to the puck, outmuscle you for the puck, and outhustle you for the puck, then only 2 things are possible, you are now too old and slow, or you are just not giving a max effort.

I see a combination of the 2 things, a team that is worn down and giving a halfass effort, and a team that is aging fast and the body is breaking down, aka all the injuries.

Last year is looking more like St Louis 2019, a one and done, and with a meager prospect pipeline to fall back on.

don’t forget, the Vgk have 2 of the guys who were part of that Blues cup win, 7 and 49.

    • ThG

“when bottom feeder teams beat you to the puck, outmuscle you for the puck, and outhustle you for the puck, then only 2 things are possible, you are now too old and slow, or you are just not giving a max effort.”

or a lot of players are playing hurt ?

  29. Richie-Rich

Let’s not forget that Hill was once a cast off and that the team also relied on Quick during last season’s run to the playoffs. Hill is a good goaltender, but not even an elite goalie is going to make a difference with the total shit show defense right now. The defense has to be better, period. Hutton? Where’s Hutton? A case can be made right now that Korczak, Hutton and Cormier could be better than McNabb, Martinez and Whitecloud.

  30. Duckboy

    Smells like spring 2022…..

    Playoffs?…you kidding me? playoffs?!?!?

  31. Walt

Another problem is that opposing teams have figured out the Cassidy rope a dope system, and they are just using speed and quick strike transition rushes to overcome the hang back and clog system, to beat it before it ever gets set up.

so, there are plenty of obstacles to overcome, but player effort, hustle and determination are not negotiable, and if it continues to be sluggish, no amount of tweaks are going to be successful.

and Mark Stone is the emotional leader of this team, and a very good player, and they are definitely weaker without him.

  32. Jim

    Marchessault after last night’s game——

Marchessault: “It’s on guys like us to bring your team to the next level and we’re not doing that right now.”

and he is exactly right, it is on the veteran players to step up, and they have been failing miserably.

    • DeezNutz

They haven’t done it all season. They’ve been average to bad since early November. The GM needs to unload every UFA contract and try to get some picks and look toward next season because this particular roster is shit and I’m sick of watching them embarrass themselves

  33. Jim

    Golden Knights’ Recent Struggles
In the opening 30 games of the season where the Golden Knights put together a 20-5-5 record, they had the second-best goals against average (GA/GP) in the league (2.40) and were eighth best in shots against (29.4). In their 32 games since then, they’ve allowed the eighth-most goals per-game (3.41), have given up the fifth-most shots per game (32.3), and their penalty kill is 25th in the league (73.4%).

The deeper analytics prove even further that the Golden Knights’ defense has been a huge problem. They’ve allowed high danger chances (HDCF/60) at a significantly higher rate in the second half of the season, dropping from fifth best in the league (10.3) in the opening 30 games to 25th (12.47) in the last 32.

While they’ve only played with their ideal defensive lineup for a small portion of the regular season, this recent nine game slump — where they’ve given 37 goals — has proven that it’s not just a personnel issue.

As much as the Golden Knights deserve criticism for their defensive efforts, they haven’t been getting the goaltending performances from Adin Hill and Logan Thompson they are accustomed to. Hill has lost four of his last five starts and is carrying an .883 save percentage (SV%) along with a 3.40 goals against average (GAA) in that stretch. After a strong start to the calendar year, Thompson has struggled with an .871 SV% with a 4.00 GAA in his last six games.

The dude has been getting beat up a lot on here lately, but I have to say Cotter needs to go. Likable guy, but he loses the puck constantly. If he carries the puck into the zone it gets taken from him 9 out of 10 times. For a player that isn’t scoring and isn’t a defensive master it starts to just make him a liability. Bruce keeps playing him on upper lines so I know I must be missing something positive, but I just don’t see it. He provides some good assists once in a while.

Another player who doesn’t get talked about negatively is Marchessault. The guy makes big plays darn near every game, but holy hell he loses the puck to the other team almost as much as Cotter. He gets taken off the puck or worse will just pass so bad it just goes to the other team.

Combine the puck losses of these two with shitty or lazy passing of others and sprinkle in random acts of whiffing on the puck (ie Theo and Kolesar) it makes for a team that doesn’t have the puck very much in their own end.

I am a salty fan, no doubt, but once you look for or start noticing these things its hard not to see them over an over. It’s all self inflicted and needs to be addressed IMO.

  35. Admittedly my optimism is not at an all time high currently but I have also not given up the ship either …I’m not sure that bringing in any players from other teams is an elixir as other gm’s will try to exact an arm and a leg from us…there are no magic answers in our farm system either at the moment…what I’d like for them to concentrate on is an overhaul to our defense crew.. let’s see if we can sell off at least Martinez and Mcnabb to teams seeking playoff veteran leadership.. while infusing Korczak and Cormier into our lineup with enough time to get up to speed for the playoff run…lastly I can guarantee that the jets and stars hope VGK turns it around as the last team they want to face in the first round are the reigning Stanley Cup champs!!

I have one question for the people. Why did Vegas implode the coaching staff after last season? Maybe Craig goes to HSK to get them inline with Cassidy’s teachings? That makes some kind of sense if that is why. Meh. However, the well liked Misha Donskov was sent packing (later picked up by Deboer). I am pretty sure there was another one or two kicked as well. This is just off the top of my head. Not a lot has changed between the two years, so it makes me question the coaching staff and then why do you fire your staff after an epic cup win?

H.K., I’ve said that along I agree with you our draft choices are basically worthless trading them instead of the few young guys we drafted is counter productive. Pull a Mike Ditka if your old enough to remember he trades all his picks for Ricky Bell. One stud for all our picks is well worth it. I know most will think I’m crazy but where we draft late in rounds isn’t working out. As I’ve said our Ottawa pick is special let’s use it to our advantage being it was a freebie to start with.
