VGK Completely Out Of Answers For Slow Starts

This is about the 10th article I’ve written about the Golden Knights’ recurring early game problems. It’s happened so much that I’ve literally run out of different ways to express it, despite it being my job as a writer to come up with a new way every time.

For the third game in a row, the Golden Knights fell into a three-goal hole, failed to climb out, and lost in regulation. In each of the last seven regulation losses, Vegas has allowed not just the game’s first goal, but the first two. And, as shared on the VGK home broadcast last night, all but one of the 19 regulation losses this season have seen the Golden Knights behind by multiple goals at some point.

Everyone agrees, this team absolutely must find a way to start better so they can take advantage of their biggest strength, dominating in the 3rd period.

Unfortunately, like my issue of running out of creative ways to start articles about this topic, the Golden Knights are out of answers as well.

It’s a really fair question and one I wish we could say we had a better answer for but I’m not entirely sure. I don’t have a great explanation for it. If we did, we’d probably do what we could to try to prevent it from happening. –Kelly McCrimmon on VGK Insider Show

From players to coaches to front office, the solution to VGK’s chronic problem is fleeting, and the best answer seems to be blind faith.

I’m still optimistic that we are going to prevent it from happening as much through the final stretch of our season as it has been over the course of the games so far. It really seems to be a trait of our team that we wish we could do a better job of. –McCrimmon on VGK Insider Show

McCrimmon did go out and make a trade last night, adding 30-year-old Cole Smith from Nashville in exchange for a 3rd round pick and Christoffer Sedoff. Smith’s player profile, though, is that of a 4th line grinder who plays about 14 minutes a night and rarely generates offense. He’s likely to step into the lineup in place of Cole Reinhardt, an extremely similar player. Smith adds a bit of depth as a penalty killer, which could lessen the PK load on players like Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, and Mark Stone, but Smith’s presence is certainly not a true solution to VGK’s early game problems.

Maybe there is some other magical answer in the works before Friday’s deadline, but more than likely, hoping against hope seems to be the chosen route.

It’s beyond frustrating. Injuries happen and guys go in and out of the lineup, but to me what kind of stands out is just a lack of energy to start games. It’s not just one player but no one seems to have the Wild Bill energy of the continuous motor when he’s available, and sounds like he may not be walking through that door

one answer that seems plausible is to see who on the other 31 teams scores most of his goals in the 1st period, and then acquire a couple of those players.

    • vgk21

I looked it up, and most of the top 25 in first period scoring are the usual top guys, who are unavailable, and Pavel Dorofeyev who is 10th on the list.

but a couple who might be available are Mika Zibanejad of NYR and Drake Batherson of Ottawa and Evan Rodrigues of the Fla Panthers

      • Emmanuel

Batherson is 27YO and a steady 25G/35A RW, but we are overflowing with RW’s. The Sens FO can be had, they ALWAYS make bad trades.

Not that I really think they are considering a coaching change but anything IS possible.

Bruce Cassidy is facing scrutiny, with some questioning if the team has tuned him out due to a significant performance downturn and, specifically, issues with maintaining leads. While his 2023 Stanley Cup success is noted, current struggles, including poor third-period play, have led to speculation about his future.

Key details regarding the current situation:

Performance Issues: The team has struggled with consistency, often failing to hold leads and having poor starts, with Cassidy explicitly calling out a lack of player preparation.

Lineup Changes: Constant tinkering with line combinations has raised concerns about team stability.

Injuries and Fatigue: Injuries to key players, particularly on defense, and potential Olympic fatigue have been cited as factors in the team’s struggles.

Accountability: Cassidy has emphasized that players must take responsibility for their performance, while some observers question if his coaching style is still effective for this group.

Despite these challenges, the team has maintained a presence in the playoff picture, and some believe it is too early to make a definitive judgment on his tenure.

Actually the poor third period play assessment above is not accurate though there have been two recent games where entering the third trailing by one they were not able to score (WSH and BUF). It’s been the first period mostly followed by the second period. Third period goals is in fact near or at the very top of the league. The above is the response from Gemini when asked could the players be having trouble playing for Cassidy. As I noted above I don’t know that is happening but that has been known to happen with a coach possibly even a very successful one. It’s just a thought nothing more. Trying to cover some bases. Anything is possible though I tend to doubt Cassidy is on the way out. Have just been such a good third period team. Go figure on period one.

    • Henderson One

Cassidy has a taxi on speed dial.

  4. Bruce can’t lace up the skates, he’s not coaching 10 year olds, he has a overly veteran group who by this time should have internally and collectively taken accountability among themselves and started playing as capably as many of us expect them to.

One aspect I do agree on is the constant shuffling of lines, good lines have continuity and chemistry, and this is not achieved in the heat of the moment. It is best done at practice, and given the condensed schedule this is not available to physically tax the players, but at least video sessions should be available to review and be discussed.

More than anything it’s the slow first period starts followed by mediocre results from Hill. First period I just don’t get it. They come out hard every time but can’t score. Third periods have been strong come from behind into OT so many times.

Another good one coming from Jeremy Tingley from NHL Trade rumors Vegas has been in contact with the Blues and Panthers for Goaltending help

    And away we go!

    Golden Knights projected lineup:

Ivan Barbashev — Jack Eichel — Raphael Lavoie

Pavel Dorofeyev — Mitch Marner — Reilly Smith

Braeden Bowman — Tomas Hertl — Keegan Kolesar

Brandon Saad — Colton Sissons — Cole Reinhardt

    Jeremy Lauzon — Shea Theodore

    Noah Hanifin — Rasmus Andersson

    Brayden McNabb — Kaedan Korczak

    Adin Hill

    Akira Schmid

Scratched: Alexander Holtz, Ben Hutton, Cole Smith

    • Emmanuel

Why is Lauzon, a career 3rd pair guy on our 1st pair?

Why is 2/3 of our 2nd line playing out of position?

Why havent we acquired a budget checking C that would allow Hertl to C the 2nd line?

      • NAM

Lauzon/Theo have played well together when McNabb was hurt. McNabb and Korczak played well together when Theo was hurt. Lauzon and Korczak weren’t as effective together as the other combos.

There is no 2nd line and 3rd line this year. This is part of the major problem(s) this team has. No one outside of Marner has cemented themself in the 2nd line. Hertz and Doro are/were shitty 5×5 even with elite Marner. Personally I though Smith/Marner were two of the better combos put together this year, but then even that faded.

Hertl was 27% on faceoffs last game, way worse than even “not a center” Marner. In fact i am going to be as bold as saying Hertl is one of the problems with this team in general. Him and Doro are PP darlings then super sketchy 5×5. So wanting him to be L2 center, meh.

This team, knowing Karl was going to be out most of the year and then Howden a lot of it still didn’t bring in a center and the L4 center that was good enough to play L2 when needed is now in TOR so that we could buy one more season of future old man Marner. Just add this to the list of why McCrimmon fucked up this team. Happy to talk about the dysfunction.

I thought for sure I read Ralphie got sent back Henderson Colton Parayko To the sabers Save

      • Emmanuel

Its as if the young Buff D flipped a switch all at once and became really good.

Colton will beef up their PK.

  7. I cannot be convinced that having Lacyzinsky as a center, putting Marner back on the wing and putting Saad on the bench is not a better way to go moving forward.

    • Emmanuel

Laughton would sure look good in gold…… $3.5M/y, C’s the 3rd line, Hertl moves up to 2C, Marner to 1RW & Doro slides back to 2RW……..

  11. Ruthless babe

McCrimmon is on the hot seat, imo, over the next few days.

if he fails to improve and remake the team for a successful finish at the deadline, then he should be “relieved of his duties”, as they say.

and for those who say he has no decent trade chips or cap space, well HE created that problem.

and for those who want a new coach, well that would be decided by the new GM.

    • Emmanuel

      Theres trade chips……

They dont need a star they need a checkling C or a 2 way (modestly offensive) LW.

  12. DO NOT TRADE CONNELY!!

  13. NAM

I think at this point you you ship Andersson (6 team no trade list) to a contender willing to give you back what you lost. Andersson can still make somebody better, just not us. He still has good value.

  14. vgk21

    Barbashev – Eichel – Bowman
    Smith – Marner – Dorofeyev
    Saad – Hertl – Reinhardt
    Smith – Sissons – Kolesar

    McNabb – Theodore
    Hanifin – Korczak
    Lauzon – Andersson

    Hill

    • vgk21

notice the changes in d pairs. McNabb back with Theodore, and Anderssom not with Hanifin.

and the new guy Smith on the 4th line, and Reinhardt replacing Kolesar on the 3rd

  15. Ruthless babe

Hill sucks, plain and simple. if he is still a Vgk after friday, KM should be fired immediately.
