Last night the Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers wrapped up their 2024-25 season series. With a 3-2 victory, Edmonton evened the series at two games apiece but Vegas still sits in the driver’s seat to win the Pacific. In all likelihood, the Golden Knights have enough of an arm’s length to hold off the Kings and Oilers for the division crown. Most Vegas fans aren’t surprised but a dozen or so certified NHL experts are.
For the 7th time in 8 seasons, the Vegas Golden Knights are going to the postseason.
The playoffs officially begin on April 19th. Due to building constraints surrounding WrestleMania, VGK are expected to play Game 1 on Easter Sunday, April 20th.

Prior to Opening Night, Sportsnet released its league-wide predictions. Look, we’ve been there; you can’t get them all right. However, the most notable was their overwhelming choice for Pacific Division champion.

Yes, Sportsnet is a Canadian media outlet. Yes, the Oilers are the reigning Western Conference champions. And yes, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid play for Edmonton. But come on, only one out of 20 analysts correctly predicted Vegas? What else must Bruce Cassidy, Jack Eichel, and Adin Hill do to convince our Northern neighbors?
Not only will Vegas capture their fourth divisional flag but they continue to pile up historic numbers against the Pacific. After another fine season, the Golden Knights have pulled way ahead of the others in production since 2017.

Annually, the Golden Knights run through their division. Vegas also is accustomed to finishing first and are in a championship window. How was that ignored by Sportsnet’s analysts? It was also lost that Stanley Cup participants rarely win the division the following season. The Golden Knights are a great example.
After their memorable 2018 run to the Stanley Cup Finals, Vegas finished the next season in third place. Following their 2023 Stanley Cup championship, the Golden Knights landed in the fourth spot in the Pacific Division and eighth overall in the Western Conference.

Did anyone listen to Ken’s post-game? I thought he had an interesting idea in moving Howden up to the Hertl-Dorofeyev line. Howden has some success in the playoffs but then so does Saad and Saad has significantly stronger career stats (including +/- +44 compared to Howden -12) in fact he’s 55/103 over half a point a game in the playoffs and Howden is just 12/32. Interesting idea though. We’ll see what Cassidy does.
