VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 7 MINNESOTA WILD 2 (43-28-8, 94 PTS)

Recap: It didn’t take long before the Golden Knights took control of the game. After taking an early penalty, Vegas’ penalty kill created a turnover and broke out to the Wild’s zone. Jack Eichel found Nic Roy for an easy tap in opening goal. Pavel Dorofeyev recorded his 13th goal of the season on then and Eichel tripled VGK’s lead with a power play goal. After 20 minutes the Golden Knights held a commanding 3-0 lead.

Minnesota picked up their first goal of the game at the 7:42 mark of the 2nd period. The Golden Knights were awarded a penalty which Jonathan Marchessault recorded his 42nd goal of the season. VGK went into the second intermission up 4-1.

Tomas Hertl picked up his first goal as a Golden Knight 2:27 into the final frame. The Wild picked up their second score five minutes later but William Karlsson regained Vegas’ four goal lead a couple of shifts later. VGK would add another late to cap off a 7-2 win and clinch a playoff berth.

The Golden Knights record improves 43-28-8 crushing the Wild 7-2 at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas will face the Colorado Avalanche for a matinee matchup on Sunday. Puck drop against the Avalanche is scheduled for 12:30 PM. (Recap by Jason)

Analysis: Coming in needing a win to clinch a playoff berth, VGK came out with a killer attitude and buried a bunch of their earlier chances. Eichel and Roy finished a break, Dorofeyev sniped one shortside, and Eichel buried one on the power play. Once they got the big lead, they could basically just coast to the finish line and officially punch their ticket to the postseason. (Analysis by Ken)

    That’s more like it!!!!!!!

How bout that! The boys CAN play a complete game!! And when they DO, good things happen!
I really felt sorry for MAF…7 diff scorers pounded him all game. He was pret-ty upset. I think i heard chants of ” Fleury” in the crowd, made me smile at the memories…hey, JB, WE’RE IN!!” My confidence is restored!!

  2. DeezNutz

That one was for Allan Walsh

  3. Pistol Pete

Not a lot to not like about that one!

VGK makes the playoffs for the 6th time in 7 seasons.

Tomas Hertl gets his first as a Golden Knight and at his first home game.

Eichel makes another 30 goal season.

Pavel Dorofeyev has a multi-point game and is back at half a point a game for the season.

Two PP goals and a shortie.

    Sevens goals by seven scorers.

    Petro close to returning.

Mark Stone waiting in the wings.

Now let’s see the Champions run the table on this season ending homestand beginning with the Avs on Sunday!

Does Dallas really want to play this team in the opening round? I don’t think so!

    • Pistol Pete

I forgot something. Paul Cotter the warrior gets an assist!

      • Pistol Pete

Should have mentioned it was Roy who got the shortie his first game back from injury.

Oh and Kolesar scores in back-to-back games!

Love that smile and enthusiasm that is Tomas Hertl.

One more thing. Don’t look to Theo getting traded. With Hanifin we now have two young puck moving offensive defensemen. Part of McCrimmon’s long term strategy.

        • Pistol Pete

Two assists for Hanifin, one for Theo.

          • Pistol Pete

            Let’s not overlook Stevie’s four!

          • TS

Yeah, WHO says Theo is done in Vegas? Not me!

          • TS

Pp, Hertl got a HUGE ovation at one point– he is already appreciated by the fans. Great future here in Vegas for him, I hope!

    • NAM

No mention of Hutton from you or any one else on here. C’mon? We are 6-0-1 with Hutton playing with Petra out. 0-3 with no Hutton and Petra out.

Why is Petro close to returning? I don’t remember Cassidy saying that when talking about him in the presser. Maybe I am not remembering correctly.

  4. niggles

    Hell yeah!!!! Go Knights Go!!!

Time to buy your playoff tickets boys!!!

  5. Excellent all around effort. Hertal looks like he’s starting to come around. Colorado game will be a good measuring stick. The question remains can they develop enough chemistry in time to beat a tough first round opponent?

  6. Pistol Pete

Two five-on-five goals by the Stephenson-Hertl-Dorofeyev line (three of the seven goals were special team). I was hoping Cassidy would try Pav with Hertl. Stone will be Hertl’s RW for sure. Will be interesting to see who the LW is. Interesting Cassidy scratched Amadio for Cotter this game.

If Carrier makes it back with Stone there will be 15 forwards on the roster.

    Barbashev-Eichel-Marchessault
    Stephenson-Hertl-Stone
    Dorofeyev-Karlsson-Mantha
    Carrier-Roy-Kolesar

    Scratch Cotter, Howden and Amadio.

Assuming Carrier is effective returning from his injury, you have Dorofeyev, Amadio, Howden and Cotter competing for the slot at Karlsson’s LW. This is decent depth. As one can see I have Dorofeyev in the slot but of course it would be up in the air especially given Amadio and Howden’s experience and performance in the playoffs last year. VGK is deep.

    • Emmanuel

Amadio should crack the 4th line on the wing. Definately above
Kolesar and Carrier is unlikely to be the Carrier weve known.

      Cotter/Roy/Amadio would be a killer 4th line also…..

    • NAM

From the Cassidy presser, I am not convinced that Doro has a guaranteed spot in the lineup for the playoffs. Cassidy was asked that question and he struggled to say yes. He is a tell it like it is guy (which is awesome) and so when he sugar coats and fumbles with an answer I tend to believe he thinks opposite, but doesn’t want to be a dick. Or maybe didn’t want to set expectations. Totally my take, but also I think match ups and health of players has a ton of influence on the decision here too.

  7. Jake

A motivated and healthy Vegas is very good!

Not the “easy” first round opponent the best teams relish!

  8. JB

Knights CLINCH! I told ya so! Add in Stoney and Petro, this team CAN win the cup again! Now they have 3 games to fine tune the lines and see which goalie will start first PO game!

    • TS

JB, yes, you did! HOO- RAH, the boys remembered how to play a complete game, and it sure paid off! (So glad brains have a memory!)

Hopefully the VGK from the first 10 games show up. It’s been a long bumpy road this season. We shall see.

Can’t deny that Tomas Hertl has an infectious smile. I hope to see a lot more of him smiling in the near future.

I still hope they do well, but their inconsistent play this season gives me pause.

Stone being back on the ice with the boys definitely helps. Even if he isn’t cleared to play, him being around the guys is a huge plus.

Bring back the locker room motivator Phil the Thrill for the run. Hot dogs and straight talk to the room. <- waiting for someone to take this seriously and write a novel about how stupid it is.

ThG, we agree on one thing and that is everything regarding Marc Andre Fluery.

  12. vgk21

a Good Knight all around. Blues lose, Vgk wins big, and several players get going.

the health and rust of Stone and 7 are questions to be answered.

and the big question is the ROAD games. The graphic said it all. The Vgk are second in the league in home save %, but they are way down near the bottom on the road. and that is because the team has too often played like shit on the road this season. Will the Vgk play strong on the road like they did last year? or will they play shitty like they did way too often this year in the later stages of the season, and in recent games?

The one break they get is that they are 3-0 vs Dallas this season, so they may be able to get going in round 1 if they play Dallas. Let LA face Edm for the 3rd year in a row.

People have to realize that it was way different last year having games 1 and 2, and games 5 and 7 if necessary in your own home arena. Now it will be reversed this season, and that makes it a far bigger Hill to climb.

    • Pistol Pete

As far as home ice goes a really good team without it will win one of the first two games on the road giving them home ice advantage coming back home for game three. EDM did that to the VGK last year winning game two 5-1 but could not capitalize on it by winning game three when they returned home.

  13. NAM

Was a good game to watch. I would imagine that the wild got bit by the Las Vegas party bug last night. You roll into LV with nothing to gain playing a hockey game. You just want the season to end, but you still have games to show up for. What do you do? You have some cocktails and do a little gambling into the wee hours of the morning. Then you suffer thru a game. MIN was pretty bad last night, but the knights keep their shit together. Finally Hutton was in again and still looked damn good. He needs to be on starting roster going forward.

All and all a fun game to watch as a VGK fan, which was nice cause it was getting pretty dark with the way we were losing.

    • Rashaad

NAM, there was no Las Vegas bug. Marc Andre Fluery played. That was the difference between playing Minnesota this time and last time. Fluery stinks!

      • knights fan in minny

i would not go that far the milds bottom 6 should not even be in the league there junk

        • NAM

Honestly, they can’t afford any one. They still have to pay Sutter and Parise till like 2067. It has amazed me they have been able to be competitive the last couple of years.

          • knights fan in minny

its not pretty here the owner her is to afraid to tank a couple of years to get some talent he is afraid the fans will go away that wont happen the fans here are pretty loyal

          • NAM

Yeah I actually think MIN is a pretty great franchise. I actually think it took guts to get away from and pay the price on those two players, but man, I don’t know if you wanna end up like SJ getting it back to barebones. SJ have gotten rid of everyone, but I don’t see them winning for at least 3 years. So rough, no fans in the seats. Awful. If and when Vegas hits the bad years at least tourism will keep the seats half full until they pull the wheels up. It would be better to see them become a dynasty first.

      • NAM

You sound like an idiot and in the words of the hockey god you need to watch the game. I can give a fuck about your opinion of MAF. MIN had almost zero defense last night. They all played like they had the brown bag flu. BUT no it isn’t a team sport it is all about one guy, because you are still in shell shock from 3 years ago when your mentally challenged idol RL was ridiculed by VGK fans every where. Fucking get over it. It’s been years.

        • Rashaad

NAM, so what you are saying is that Fleury didn’t play like shit.

          Okay.

I think Fleury sucks. He looked drunk on the first goal, On the Dorofeyev goal all he had to do was cover the angle and he got beat on the short side. Fleury had no brown bag flu. He gave it everything he had. He sucks and that bothers you for some reason even though he plays for another team. I don’t know what RL has to do with Fleury being the worst goalie in the NHL right now and why you bring that up. Try to stay on point. If you don’t care about my opinion then why comment on it. I don’t care if you think that the current version of Fleury is a good goalie, that’s your opinion and you are entitled to it. From looking at Fleury’s recent body of work I feel that my opinion and case is validated. You sound upset. LOL. It’s weird to call someone an idiot simply because their opinion differs from yours.

          • NAM

I didn’t even mention Fleury until you commented on my post. I don’t think Fleury played well, but I also don’t think the entire wild team played well, especially the defense in front of Fleury. They were awful. I said the same thing about VGK against EDM. I didn’t blame it all on our goalie, but he was a part of it for sure. You on the other hand posted over and over throughout the comments about your thoughts on Fleury with almost no replys, but when you disregarded everything I said in my post to post, yet more shit about Fleury, I called you on it. I think you still sound like an idiot. It’s not a difference of opinion, I think you sound like an idiot. Which sounds truer? A team out of the playoffs that comes to vegas and plays really bad cause they don’t care and *probably* indulged a bit of what Vegas has to offer (just like all the rumors and stories from early VGK years) OR Fleury, it was Fleury, did you see his face, look at this link, I hate the guy, hey everyone look at Fleury he played shitty. Like a fucking child.

Game 79 Analysis VGK 7 MIN 2 WIN

    VGK records now stands at 43-28-8, 94pts .595, +22 GF/GA

With the Blues loss to the Hurricanes, the VGK have clinched a playoff spot! Quite a bit of other news this week with the $7million+ Hanifan contract, and Mark Stone returning to the ice in a red jersey for practice. There’s been a lot of discussion already about which free agents might be leaving us after the season. It is way too early to speculate, other than I’d like to see Marchy get a deal.

The Kings (95 pts) and Predators(97 pts) are both ahead of the Knights in the playoff standings. The Knights have closed the gap. Moving up in the standings might give the VGK some opportunities for home ice, possibly in the Conference Championship if they happen to get that far. There’s still 6 points available on the board and it would be nice to see them get them all. The question is whether or not to risk injury or not. Will Cassidy rest some of his players or will he try and overtake the Kings?

The race for the President’s Trophy looks to be between the Rangers (110 pts) and the Stars (109 pts). After the final game I will review my preseason predictions, which had the VGK finishing in 3rd place behind the Kings who I predicted would win the Pacific and the Oilers who I predicted would finish in 2nd place. Vancouver was the surprise this year, a team that traditionally underperformed. Out of all the teams in the west, I believe that the Oilers present the toughest challenge if the VGK are playing at its best. If the inconsistent play continues the VGK will likely be eliminated in the 1st round.

Fans across the NHL are crying foul over the recent return of Stone to practice in a no-contact red jersey. Medical opinions say that a spleen injury could take up to 3 months to heal. Stone was initially placed on IR then LTIR on 20 February. If 3 months is the healing time frame then one might assume that he wouldn’t be coming back to mid-May at the earliest. But, hey, fans are not doctors!

Stars, all original misfits just because…..

Stone may need more than a week or two to be Game- ready. His injury was both serious and needed lengthy recovery time. So he may not be ready for Playoffs yet,and he could take a bit longer to actually play in games. Having him at practice with the guys is a HUGE morale boost to the others, and pumps us FANS up, too!

  15. JB

Not having home ice doesn’t bother me at all. Remember we closed out the Edmonton and Dallas series in their buildings. Playoffs is a completely different animal. Sometimes more pressure on home team than road team!

  17. Rashaad

NAM, thank you for admitting that Fluery played like shit.

I will now consider the matter closed

    • TS

Rashaad, Fleury is past his expiration date, i’m afraid. When he got traded soon after WE traded him, his level of play had started to degrade…I really liked him in Vegas, but he really should have retired before now. He MUST realize this. Pro athletes have a hard time walking away from their games..only the wise ones retire with their records and reputations intact…

  18. Pistol Pete

    First 64 NHL games:

    Reilly Smith: 36 pts (14 G/22 A) = .56 pts/game (+1)

    Pavel Dorofeyev: 31 pts (20 G/11 A) = .48 pts/game (+12)

Do I think Pav fully replaces Smith at this point in his career? Absolutely not but think the potential is there. Like his goal scoring.
