The Golden Knights have stepped outside the box with their lineup decisions in the last two games. Both in Utah against the Hockey Club and in Vegas against the Capitals, VGK opted to dress seven defensemen instead of bringing up a 12th forward from Henderson.
Fielding a lineup with 11 forwards and seven defensemen is not all that uncommon in the NHL, what is unusual is asking one of those seven defensemen to step onto the 4th line and play forward for the entire 1st period.
On Friday in Salt Lake City, Kaedan Korczak played six shifts in the opening frame as a forward alongside Tanner Pearson and Cole Schwindt. Then last night, Ben Hutton took the reins, forcing Pearson to his off-side, playing four shifts as a forward before having to leave the game due to an injury.
A little bit on Friday was that it was the Father’s Trip so getting Korczak and Hutton both in was very important for us. We wanted to keep our guys involved. Sometimes it can work out for you, sometimes it doesn’t. It gives forwards more ice time. -Bruce Cassidy
In Cassidy’s 211 games behind the Vegas bench, Friday and Sunday were the 2nd and 3rd times he’s ever deployed a lineup with an extra defenseman. The only other time was a road game against the Colorado Avalanche in which VGK’s roster was without William Karlsson, William Carrier, Shea Theodore, and Ben Hutton, and Michael Amadio was ruled out late due to an illness. They had recently claimed Tobias Bjornfot off waivers, Whitecloud was returning to the ice after an injury, and Lukas Cormier had just been called up to replace Korczak.
That time felt like it happened out of necessity, there wasn’t a better option, so for one night they went with the unconventional lineup. It didn’t work, they got smoked 3-0, but without five regular starters and both goalies (Jiri Patera started), it’s hard to blame the extra defenseman. Also, all seven defensemen exclusively played as defensemen in that game, unlike these last two.
That’s what makes these last two games so peculiar. Playing as a defenseman, Korczak eventually assisted on the game-winning goal in the 3rd period in Utah, but his 1st period was an experience unlike any he’s had in his pro hockey career.
Different for sure. I honestly don’t remember the last time I was up front. There’s a reason I’m on the back end for sure. It’s a lot different going up there, kind of a mind-boggle a little bit. -Korczak
Cassidy has been steadfast in his explanations of lineup decisions that he’s always looking to put players in positions to succeed. Instead of playing a young defenseman in a place he’s certainly uncomfortable with, why not call up another forward from the AHL? Vegas did for the game in Anaheim, bringing Grigori Denisenko. He was eventually benched after a penalty in the 2nd period and Cassidy later said he “didn’t think Denisenko was ready.” Maybe the timing wasn’t right to make something else happen for Friday’s game, but there’s no excuse for Sunday at home.
One of the theories floating around is that Vegas is trying to save salary cap by keeping the roster thin. For much of the season (save for a few games while Victor Olofsson was on LTIR), they have been accruing cap space which will allow them a bit more flexibility at the trade deadline. However, using Hutton and Korczak as forwards in the last two games as opposed to calling up a player like Tanner Laczynski or Jonas Rondbjerg saved Vegas about $4,000 per night. That’s worth a bit more at the trade deadline, but almost certainly not enough to alter VGK’s plans.
The father’s trip line of reasoning is peculiar as well. With Nic Hague sidelined, either Hutton or Korczak was in line to get the call for the first game of the trip in Anaheim, which ended up being Hutton. Then, in the second game, they could have easily put Korczak in the lineup allowing both guys a chance to play in front of their father.
Nonetheless, the odd experiment appears to be over as the Golden Knights head East for a five-game road trip.
We’re going to travel with 12, maybe 13 forwards. We leave Tuesday, so let’s see where the health with the other guys are. I can’t tell you when we’re going to get a forward back from our roster. They are skating but I don’t know how close they are. We’ll look at guys in Henderson and see who is the best fit for us. We have some centermen that can move to the wing. We will certainly be more conventional typically. This was a little bit the exception to the rule the last couple of games. I would anticipate we’ll be 12 and six in Toronto. -Cassidy
Mark Stone’s status will be a driving force in the lineup decisions on this road trip, but even if he’s not ready to go for Wednesday’s game, the weird saga of 11 forwards and one defenseman playing up front is history, and that’s probably for the best.

The only D man that should see time at forward is Shea. While we’re looking at the lineup choices….a little Monday morning QB time here….With Hill playing much better the past few starts, I thought he would be in there versus the Caps. Might not have mattered, but there would have been plenty of time to rest for the next game. One more thing….Eichel should not be killing penalties as there are other guys able to do that. His face off win is 47%, and he rarely touches the puck when on the PK. He’s good at forcing the play in a certain direction, but the value is not there on the PK. Save his legs for offense.

I agree. I’ve thought for a few years that Shea should be a forward where he could excel. He is not a great D. He turns over the puck way too often, and he is not very physical. I said on here last summer that I was hoping Theodore would be traded to Carolina for Martin Necas who has been on fire this year, but they ended up re-signing him for 2 years at $6.5M/year. And of course Theodore ended up being resigned for 7 years @ $7.4M/year. Oh well.
ThG
Vic , I agree he should see, but I don’t see it happening. A dman playing forward opens up to more hits by the opposing side. That is why Hutton got hurt because d men are not used to being hit at same intensity and angles as forwards are.
Hertyl and Karly are face off guys, Eichel is streaky in face offs. I don’t see him on PK unless coach wants to see him take a puck to the bread basket.

how come tanner lyschin is not getting a shot had a pretty good preseason
NAM
I thought the same thing, but it’s not the first time weird decisions are made around call ups. I will leave it as, probably some reason I don’t understand with cap or contracts or maybe even a pig headed GM. I did think the kid earned some playing time in the bigs, though, through his preseason play.
JB
It’s clear that the McGMs know we will need some major help come trade time. I’m ok with playing with the cap to give us more ammo there. But, we DO have to make the playoffs or it’s all wasted. This will be a tuff roady and we need 5-6 points min out of it.
Tim
Leave no Stone unturned referring to Mark Stone our second best player MIA again. He’s killing our lines effectiveness and all we do is rotate guys hoping something works. His 9.5 million is killing us and I just think his back issues have made him a albatross around our neck. It’s a shame but it’s time to move on BUT How?
ThG
TIM , STONE IS INJURED WAKE UP CALL !!
Did your ” I FELL DOWN AND CAN’T GET UP” button not work today ? Maybe when you are watching the games with volume up to highest level your HEARING AIDS ARE TURNED OFF and you miss on the pre game, in game, post game TV announcers repeatedly telling the VIEWERS that STONE IS ON THE IR>??
BTW Stone was skating today Butch said he may go on the long trip. Wait for it.

At this point in time I would suggest the following, as I know Cassidy loves to juggle lines, there are 2 lines that should be set:
Eichel…Barbashev….Howden….Howden has played with Eichel before so there is an established chemistry
Karlsson…Hertl….Dorofeyev
Roy-Kolesar-Shwindt….they have been effective as a unit…leave em alone
4th line…hope and prayer…mish and mash…glue and tape
Emmanuel
Howden is not a………you know nevermind……..

Yes once again, you are taking the best defensive center and moving him to position he is not as good at. Why? Offense? Christ you are giving up 4 or 5 goals a game. You need more defense, not even less. On top of that Hertl isn’t good 5×5 so why boat anchor your 2nd best forward and a guy that can own the top guys on the other team? Just because you know how to move people around randomly in your mind to make a line doesn’t mean you should.
Emmanuel
This (bad defense from F’s) cant be fixed by juggling lines. Too many defensively questionable F’s and their two best are buried on the 3rd line (WK) even though he can score and the other one (Stone) is so banged up for years Ive noticed his defense slipping.
Instead of Superstars id pick up a couple of decent 2 way wingers at the dealine.
NAM
Yeah it is one of those things though. We knew all off-season that we were in trouble this year. Still sucks when you see it happening though.
Eric
Choosing to travel last week without an extra forward adds to the mystery and absent any info from the team (which I doubt we’ll never get) is related to whatever had GMKM thinking 11/7 was the way to go. It’s also painfully obvious they are not high on Brisson despite making the team out of camp.
Larry
NAM… actually it was a simple lack of communication as far as what was intended and what you interpreted…I listed the centers first as could be noticed Eichel Karlsson Roy… I would never think to take a player as good as Karly is out of his best position … I was simply giving him 2 wingers that could hopefully produce offense in the interim.
NAM
Gotcha. That makes more sense. Yeah I think Hertl is hard to hide. I was hoping it was just last year, being new to the team and off injury, but so far not looking that way. I hope it works out. A long season still left. The dude is a legit positive for our power play. Just needs to come around 5×5.
larry
NAM…Hertl as a winger makes more sense at this stage of his career…that big body can muck in the corners…keep the puck alive…and help to facilitate offensive opportunities and then plant himself in front of the net…while lessening his defensive responsibilities thru the neutral zone.
NAM
I like the concept larry. It can’t hurt anything to try at this point. I do agree with Emmanuel that line shuffling isn’t going to fix this, but if we can find something that minimizes the bigger problems it is a start.

Ben Hutton has been placed on LTIR.

That sucks. Maybe not a wise decision to use him as a forward.

maybe we could move one of our goalies to the power play unit ?
