For eight seasons Shea Theodore has commanded respect from opponents in both the defensive and offensive zones. In November, Theodore was rewarded with his second long-term extension with the Golden Knights. By the end of that contract, he would be the longest-tenured player in team history.
Shea Theodore tonight:
— on-ice for 34 shot attempts for (8 against)
— on-ice for 18 shots for (3 against)
— on-ice for 2.4 expected goals for (0.21 against)When Shea was playing, Vegas was dominating. pic.twitter.com/cTpvkFLykj

As expected, Theodore is steadily putting together another fine, if not the finest, regular season of his career. Going into tonight, the 27-year-old is averaging 0.83 points per game. Last season Theodore averaged 0.89 points per game, however he only played in 47 games. The top six defenseman will pass that mark in the next five games.
Power play goal for Vegas!

Altogether, the offensive defenseman is on pace to pass his career highs in; points (52), assists (38), power play assists (15) and games played (71). Statistically, he’s the second most effective playmaker the Golden Knights have on their roster. Without Jack Eichel, Theodore would be leading his squad in assists, power play minutes per game, and second in points.
What’s most surprising, or unfairly surprising, is Theodore’s strong play in the defensive zone. He’s always been more of a weapon on offense but this season he’s been effective in getting the puck out of his zone, leading his team in takeaways and blocking 50+ shots in 42 games. So sure, we shouldn’t be shocked by his veteran, defensive presence in his own zone.

With only four goals through 42 games, it’s unlikely Theodore will reach his career high (14) which he recorded back in 2021-22. That season, #27 received multiple Norris Trophy Award votes. If he continues his consistent, two-way impact he will likely earn more.

Wait? So don’t trade Theodore for forward help? LOL

I think I am coming around to agree with Ken in that Id like to see Vegas Vic playing with Eichel and Stoney with Karlsson on the second line…it makes for a more balanced top 6.
Emmanuel
I always thought he was average defensively not below avg.
His only weaknessses, he gives up takeaways (but he carries the puck a LOT so its kinda excusable) & he has trouble receiving the puck when they are cycling.
Still that a VERY good player at that price point.

Im not too sure I can agree on that price point issue….in fact i was fairly stunned at the money and years that was given to him….but I do agree if he can be traded for a top 6 2 way forward bring it on!

The caps gone up from 37M over time so we kinda have to adjust. What I considered a 4.5M$ player in the 90s is roughly twice that, superstars that were paid $8M a year are now going for 12.5. Its not dollar for dollar, there are more players paid 2-5M nowadays, in the 90s all the money went to the star players.
Regarding Theo in my mind hes a 4.5M player but im thinking in 2010 terms. A player his caliber is roughly paid 7.5 nowadays.
Of course they are getting a no state tax discount at home games.
As a recent retiree I can tell you going from CA to NV shaved off roughly 10%, thats a BIG deal.

You make a valid case…not one I agree with but that’s ok too….can you make the same argument for the length of the contract… personally I think not!
