Golden Knights Hockey Card Checklist

Being stuck at home isn’t ideal but it does open up time to basically do just about anything. Some are working on loose handrails, others are taking up painting, Netflix binging, but in my case going through boxes and boxes of NHL common cards.

About six months ago my young son starting getting into hockey and baseball cards. It started with a Golden Knights team set, then grew to a few packs at Target, to eventually pulling singles from the local card shop. On one visit my four-year-old became overly excited when he pulled a random Roberto Luongo card. Valued at .65 cents, it’s become one of his favorite cards. No idea why, but it doesn’t matter.

With time in hand, the boy and I decided to do some inventory. Two full seasons and a paused one later, we found the Golden Knights are well represented in the hockey card world. From common cards like Nick Holden, Jon Merrill or William Carrier, to specially autographed and game-worn jersey inserts from your favorite stars.

According to Trading Card Database, there are a total of 3,811 separate Golden Knights hockey cards. Most are common cards you find in most packs, but there are plenty of insert cards available.

Autographed or signature inserts include; Shea Theodore, Reilly Smith, William Karlsson, Jonathan Marchessault, Alex Tuch, Cody Glass, Zach Whitecloud, Nic Roy. Not shocking, the most valuable auto-cards are Upper Deck’s Marc-Andre Fleury autographed, VGK jersey cards. Most range $175-$200 in value. Autograph cards are hard to find (1:276), as in one per every 276 individual packs.

My personal favorite inserts are game-worn jersey cards. They’re not as elusive as player signature cards. Beckett.com lists jersey cards as (1:40), or one per 40 packs. If you do get lucky, hopefully, it’s a card with value or has some sentiment. As cool as they are, most are overpriced. For instance, on eBay, you can buy an Upper Deck game-used Fleury jersey card for $2,669.99, and an Alex Tuch patch insert for $499.99. As well crafted as these cards are, there are plenty of them released so they don’t hold value. Consider them like a car. However, here are a few that could hold value.

Trading card companies don’t produce as many cards as they used to, so not every player is featured in a series. Also, companies sign contracts with younger players and develop entire lines of cards around those projected stars. Tuch has the most trading cards as a Golden Knight. Fleury would be second, but you’d be surprised who follows. Cody Glass has upwards of ten separate autograph/jersey cards, including several Draft Day autographed jersey cards. At the young age of 20, the 2017 sixth overall pick has 341 different trading cards, most being released before he played a game for Vegas. If Glass pans out like the organization expects his cards could hold and possibly gain value over time.

Upper Deck Vegas Golden Knights Team Set Now Available

Earlier this season, we posted Upper Deck’s new Young Guns insert set featuring Vegas forward Alex Tuch.

With a limited number of Vegas players printed, UD explained to us that more VGK cards would be produced as the year went on. Well, the waiting is over. Upper Deck hooked up local fans with a 2018 Golden Knights Inaugural Season 15-player team set.

Oscar Dansk, Cody Eakin, Deryk Engelland, Erik Haula (twice), William Karlsson, Brendan Leipsic, Oscar Lindberg, Brayden McNabb, Colin Miller, Tomas Nosek, David Perron, Luca Sbisa, Nate Schmidt, Malcolm Subban, and Shea Theodore all made Upper Deck’s Inaugural Images commemorative set. Unfortunately, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare didn’t make the cut.

I mentioned Haula has two cards in the set, which is sort of true. The new UD Golden Knights commemorative set even comes with an error card. How awesome is that? Those of us who collected cards in the late 80’s all remember the highly coveted Billy Ripken error card.

Alex Tuch Is An Upper Deck Young Gun

Took a minute, but finally, the Golden Knights are starting to appear on trading cards.

Our friends at Upper Deck sent us a preview of VGK forward Alex Tuch’s newest trading cards. Tuch is featured on one of Upper Deck’s Young Guns insert cards. Nico Hischier, Brock Boeser, Josh Ho-Sang, Charlie McAvoy, Alexander Nylander, and Adrian Kempe are some of the other young players with UD Series 1 cards, which release on November 9th. Check out Tuch’s cards.

Upper Deck may print more VGK cards this season, but we’ll find out later this season when UD Series 2 is released. Earlier UD revealed a Marc-Andre Fleury card that’s now available.

If you notice, Brendan Leipsic made a cameo in one of Tuch’s cards, which technically means three Golden Knights are on new Upper Deck cards. This is what you’ve made us do Upper Deck. We want more, we want more!

These two are pretty sweet though.

Upper Deck Ignores VGK In First 2017-18 NHL Card Set

About a week ago, I found some old hockey cards getting dusty in my closet. As I sorted through, I noticed a handful of Golden Knight players. I found old Cody Eakin, Deryk Engelland, Marc-Andre Fleury, and multiple James Neal cards.

After trading VGK players with my one-year-old, I thought, screw these old cards. We need the 2017-18 Golden Knights player cards. It was time to reach out to Upper Deck, the crown jewel of trading cards. Player artwork, autographs, jersey swatches, and stick inserts are what UD excels in. In fact, this Upper Deck card got me amped for an eventual Erik Brannstrom Rookie Profile card.

I learned a lot about the trading card industry. It’s a slow but advanced process. I get it, we’re working with artists. For some reason, there is never enough time between seasons for trading card companies. For instance, players that relocate during the offseason usually get stuck in a previous team’s jersey on their new card. For example, Neal’s first Golden Knight’s card would likely be a picture of the forward in Predators yellow. So, that’s what I expected. Unfortunately, I was deeply disappointed.

When Upper Deck released their 2017-18 NHL MVP series checklist, the Golden Knights were completely invisible. Not one Vegas card was printed by Upper Deck for their first released series. It doesn’t end with UD, it’s possible other Golden Knight trading cards (O-pee-chee, Panini, Topps) won’t be available to start the season either. Here’s the Upper Deck team checklist, take a look.
