The 2026 Winter Olympics are here, and for the first time since the Golden Knights became a franchise, NHL players will participate for one of sports’ most coveted prizes. Here’s a little rundown of everything you need to know about the tournament and VGK’s participation.

Tournament Format

12 teams have been drawn into three groups of four.

Group A – Canada, Switzerland, Czechia, France
Group B – Finland, Sweden, Slovakia, Italy
Group C – USA, Germany, Latvia, Denmark

The winner of each group, along with the best 2nd place finisher, will automatically advance to the quarterfinals. The remaining eight teams will be ranked 5-12 based on position in the group, highest number of points, goal difference, number of goals scored, and 2020 IIHF ranking, in that order. These teams will play in the first round of the playoff with matchups of 5v12, 6v11, 7v10, and 8v9.

The four automatic qualifiers will be ranked 1-4 using the same criteria to determine who they will play in the quarterfinals. 1v8/9, 2v7/10, 3v6/11, 4v5/12.

In the semifinals, teams will be reseeded so that the highest remaining team plays the lowest and the middle two play each other.

The highest-seeded team is always designated as the home team.

The tournament uses a three-point system.
3 points = Regulation win
2 points = Overtime win
1 point = Overtime loss
0 points = Regulation loss

Group stage games that end tied will go to a 5-minute 3-on-3 followed by a shootout. Playoff games prior to the gold medal match, will go to a 10-minute 3-on-3 followed by a shootout. And the gold medal match is 3-on-3 until a goal is scored.

Cassidy Looking For Rasmus Andersson To Help Unlock VGK’s Transition Offense

A lot has happened in Rasmus Andersson’s first two games in a Golden Knights jersey, and even with a goal and an assist, it hasn’t really been about him. Friday night in Toronto was obviously all about Mitch Marner, and Sunday in Ottawa, the Golden Knights were on the wrong side of a beatdown.

He’s played a little more than 40 minutes so far, and yet there hasn’t really been a chance to see his impact on the roster.

As he gets more and more games under his belt and settles into the Vegas system, his strengths should start to shine through a lot more. Bruce Cassidy believes the natural parts of his game will complement this Golden Knights team nicely.

What Andersson brings with his skill set is an attack mentality with the puck, and we need a little bit more of that. He’s a good first pass guy, has a lot of composure, got a little swagger to him. -Cassidy

There’s one particular area of the game in which Cassidy believes Andersson’s impact will be immense.

The Golden Knights are at it again. They’ve pulled off yet another blockbuster trade, bringing in defenseman Rasmus Andersson in exchange for Zach Whitecloud, a 1st round pick, a conditional 2nd round pick, and prospect Abram Wiebe.

At first glance, it appears to be a major upgrade on the blue line in Vegas. Andersson has scored 10 goals and posted 30 assists this season, while playing a massive minute load of 24:14 per night. Over the past five seasons, he’s scored 45 goals and racked up 199 points, which blows Whitecloud’s 21 goals and 65 points out of the water.

Andersson is a +3 this season, while Whiecloud sits as a -8. He’s attempted 112 shots to Whitecloud’s just 33, and he has more blocks (90-63), more takeaways (18-9), and his 6.1 point shares blows away Whitecloud’s 1.3.

Changing teams can change the equation, though. In Calgary, Andersson was a #1 do-it-all defenseman for a team that’s limited on the blue line. He currently leads all Flames defensemen in total ice-time, penalty kill, 6-on-5, and 3-on-3 ice time, and is second in both even-strength and 5-on-6 ice-time. In other words, he’s the go-to guy in every situation, and it’s been that way for a few years now.

In Vegas, that’s not going to be the case.

According to multiple reports, first reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Golden Knights have acquired defenseman Rasmus Andersson in exchange for Zach Whitecloud, 2027 1st round pick, 2028 2nd round pick (which turns into a 1st round pick if VGK win the 2026 Stanley Cup), and prospect Abram Wiebe. 50% of Andersson’s salary is being retained by the Flames.

Andersson is a pending free agent and the deal reportedly does not include a contract extension at this time.
