Are The Kings An Actual Threat To The Golden Knights Repeat?

Sound the alarms the Golden Knights dropped another game. Even worse, they lost to a second Pacific Division team. So far this week the Stanley Cup champions dreadfully lost back-to-back games for the first time since losing Game’s 4 & 5 of the Western Conference finals. It’s time to sarcastically panic.

Last night’s 4-1 loss to the LA Kings was not exactly an upset. Of course, the Golden Knights were favored and held a better record but their counterparts from Los Angeles have been storming to keep it tight in the division. Entering the game, LA was riding a three-game win streak and points in six straight games. While the Golden Knights have stolen most of the headlines coming out of Pacific this season, the Kings have quietly made history of their own. After Wednesday’s game, LA became the eighth team to win their first seven road games. In reality, the two teams are closer than some expected.

Golden Knights Have Stymied Top Players Deep Into Each Series

The Golden Knights have faced their fair share of offensive superstars this postseason and they’re about to see a few more.

Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson, Pierre-Luc Dubois, and now Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov.

As with any playoff series, the biggest names dominate the conversation before it begins. Then, as it wears on, the winning team usually finds a way to slow them down.

Vegas has struggled against opposing stars early in series. In Game 1 against Winnipeg, Dubois and Connor each scored to give the Jets a 2-0 lead. Draisaitl scored four in the opening game of the second round and then added another pair in Game 2. And Game 1 of the series against Dallas saw both Hintz and Robertson hit the back of the net.

However, the impact of the best players for the other team dwindled as the series got deeper and deeper.

Deal With Blue Jackets Likely; VGK Would Get CBJ’s 1st Round Pick

NHL rosters freeze at noon today, and all of the Original 30 must submit their protection lists to the league by 2 PM. But before all that, there’s been a quick rush of rumors, including one, in particular, that could be very lucrative for the Golden Knights.

The Jackets are believed to be trading this year’s first-round draft pick (No. 24 overall) and a prospect (not Pierre-Luc Dubois or Sonny Milano) to Vegas for assurances that the Golden Knights will select either left wing Matt Calvert, center William Karlsson or defenseman Ryan Murray. –Aaron Portzline, Columbus Dispatch

That means, don’t touch young guys like Joonas KorpisaloAlexander Wennberg, and Josh Anderson, and also stay away from Jack Johnson and David Savard. In return, George McPhee gets a golden ticket, another first round pick.

It’s unclear if this deal includes the Golden Knights taking David Clarkson‘s contract off Columbus’ hands. (He’s on long-term IR, but is still owed $5.25M per year until 2020).

That’s not it for the first round picks either…
