Tampa Facing Similar Situation As Vegas With Aging Star Point Producer

This offseason, the Tampa Bay Lighting are dealing with a similar situation that’s unfolding in Las Vegas. While Golden Knights captain Mark Stone enters training camp on an expiring contract, the Lightning have the same problem with their star wing Nikita Kucherov. Both clubs are trying to hold on to their highly productive forwards beyond next season, but both are in their mid-30’s and have fought through numerous injuries. So, Tampa and Vegas are trying to perform a balancing act of rewarding their franchise favorites but also keeping the future in mind.

Kucherov is now eligible to ink a contract extension with only one year remaining on his current deal at $9.5 million for the upcoming campaign. He’s almost certainly headed for a massive raise, but the question is, how big will it be? The NHL’s financial landscape is vastly different from what it was just a couple of months ago… something from which Kucherov is going to benefit greatly. It’s not as simple as the Lightning backing up the Brink’s truck for Kucherov. There are many factors Tampa has to consider when securing Kucherov to a long-term extension, which could complicate things for both parties. –Michael Amato on Sportsnet.ca

To be fair, we’re not comparing Kucherov and Stone’s production. Tampa’s star has recorded four straight 100+ point seasons and led the NHL in 2023-24 with 144 points. Stone has 140 in the last two seasons combined. When all is said and done, Kucherov will go down as one of the league’s best point producers in league history. Whereas Stone will go down as VGK’s most beloved captain. Either way, both will be wildly celebrated when they hang up their skates.

It’s plausible that we spend too much of our attention on VGK superstar Jack Eichel. Our answer is, why shouldn’t we? His unsigned extension is one of the bigger storylines around the league and he happened to be named one of the top players in the entire NHL. Even surpassing one of the game’s all-time greats.

Sportsnet’s 2025-26 Top Ten Players

  1. Connor McDavid
  2. Nathan MacKinnon
  3. Leon Draisaitl
  4. Cale Makar
  5. Nikita Kucherov
  6. Quinn Hughes
  7. Auston Matthews
  8. Kirill Kaprizov
  9. Jack Eichel
  10. Aleksander Barkov

Last season Eichel couldn’t crack the Top 20 as then 37-year-old Sidney Crosby remained among Sportsnet’s ten best. Surprisingly, Eichel was ranked 26th overall last season which was unfairly low. Now, Sportsnet super boosted the Golden Knights top center 17 spots higher. It appears Eichel’s high 2025-26 rankings were also an omission for placing him so low last year.

Sportsnet mentions Eichel’s top ten point total as well as his fifth-place finish for the Hart Trophy (5th Place) and Selke Award (5th) last season. Whereas in the past, the star center wouldn’t have received any praise for his two-way play. Now, there’s no doubting his high-end skill on both sides of the ice. Since his move to Vegas, many consider him a complete player.

MVP Nikita Kucherov Thinks His Friend, MVP Nikita Gusev, Will Do Well In NHL

As kids growing up in Russia, the pair of Nikita Gusev and Nikita Kucherov first played together at the age of 15 for a team called the White Bears. Both undersized players, coach Gennady Kurdin took them in and urged them to use their skating and passing to unlock defenses. Quickly, they became unstoppable.

They then moved on together to play for CSKA Moskow of the KHL. Kucherov eventually to the leap of faith heading across the Atlantic ocean to play in the QMJHL where he would become a 2nd round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft while Gusev stayed in Russia where he went from an undersized castoff to the best player in the KHL.

Following MVP campaigns in their respective league, this summer the pair reunited to play for Team Russia in the IIHL World Championships and lit the world on fire.

He’s a skilled player, smart player that can make plays. We played together as kids and it was nice to get back together and we had that chemistry back. He’s a fun guy to play with and a fun guy to be around. We’ve known each other for a long time and it’s easy to talk and easy to hang out with him. He’s just a great guy. -Kucherov

Kucherov and Gusev accounted for 10 goals, 32 points, and a +23 rating in six games together. They ranked #2 and #3 in scoring in the tournament and were the talk of the tournament.

This year, Gusev will try to match Kucherov’s success in the NHL playing his first year with the Golden Knights.

We’ll see what’s going to happen, but I wish him luck and I wish him the best. He’s my good friend and Vegas is going to be happy to have him. -Kucherov

Gusev said the reason he decided to leave his home country to come to North America was that he wanted to play against the best in the world. You would think in making that decision he would lean on his friend, the best player in that best league, for advice. But according to Kucherov, that wasn’t necessary.

He won the Olympic Gold Medal, I should be asking him for advice, not him asking me. -Kucherov

Hopefully, the skill levels translate for Vegas’ Nikita as well as it has for Tampa’s.
