Dominique Ducharme next assistant coach?

The former interim turned full-time head coach of the Montreal Canadiens is rumored to be on the verge of taking a job as an assistant with a Western Conference team. Per a few reports in French out of Montreal (see below), the former conference champion head coach could be coming to Vegas.

Of course, the Golden Knights are looking to fill not one but two assistant coach jobs with both Ryan Craig and Misha Donskov departing the VGK bench this summer.

Ducharme served as head coach of the Habs for 83 regular season games and 22 playoff games. His teams struggled mightily in the regular season posting just a .361 points percentage but were excellent on the run to the Stanley Cup Final that included beating the Golden Knights.

If the rumors are true and Ducharme does come to Las Vegas, it would mean three former NHL head coaches will stand behind the bench for the Golden Knights. It’s happened a few times before, but it’s certainly rare.

Las Vegas bidding to host World Juniors

KSDK news in St. Louis reported today that the Blues and the St. Louis Sports Commission have put in a bid to host the 2026 World Junior championship. TSN’s Gord Miller followed up by tweeting that Las Vegas, Seattle, and Tampa are also interested.

The tournament takes place in late December into January, typically utilizing two stadiums.

The 2024 version of the tournament will take place in Sweden while a location has not been announced for 2025.

ECHL heading to Lake Tahoe

The 29th franchise in the ECHL has been awarded to Lake Tahoe via an ownership group including former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow.

The team, which has not been named, will play at the brand new Tahoe Blue Event Center starting in the 2024-25 season.

The Golden Knights’ current affiliation with the Savannah Ghost Pirates began in 2022. At the time of the announcement, no details on the length of the agreement were released.

Most teams are not located anywhere near their ECHL affiliate, however, there are a handful of AHL affiliates close to their ECHL partners. It would make logical sense for the Golden and Silver Knights to look at an affiliation with Lake Tahoe when the team begins play in two years.
