Interview: Brandon Sun Beat Reporter Talks To SinBin.vegas About Kelly McCrimmon

Perry Bergson is the beat reporter who covers the Brandon Wheat Kings for the Brandon Sun newspaper. He’s been in Brandon for 25 years and has covered the team and McCrimmon for the past year.

Perry talks about McCrimmon’s fit in Las Vegas, how Brandon will recover, and how he expects the jump from the WHL to the NHL for the new assistant general manager. Also, we mix in a little talk about Nolan Patrick and the prospect of him reuniting with his former coach and playing in Vegas.

Assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon Hire Made Official

After being confirmed last night by The Creator, the hire of Kelly McCrimmon will be made official today with an announcement from the still yet to be named organization.

This news was floated around almost a week ago when Guy Flaming tweeted about a source saying McCrimmon was coming to Vegas. We received a few messages from The Creator over the past week basically saying the hire was coming but that he was unable to confirm it. That changed last night when we got a one word email saying, “Confirmed.” The Brandon Wheat Kings then sent out a press release at 2:08 PM.

The winningest coach in franchise history, who has spent the better part of the last three decades as the driving force behind the Wheat Kings, has confirmed that he will be joining the new National Hockey League franchise in Las Vegas as the team’s new Assistant General Manager. -Brandon Wheat Kings

McCrimmon was previously the owner, general manager, and coach of the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League in Canada. His teams were wildly successful both in tallying wins but also in developing NHL level players. Nolan Patrick, the consensus #1 pick in the next Entry Draft, has been with the Wheat Kings since 2013 and will play one final year before heading to the NHL next season.

He will remain the owner of the Wheat Kings during his time in Las Vegas.

Report: Kelly McCrimmon, Brandon Wheat Kings GM/Head Coach To Become Vegas Assistant GM

According to a tweet from Guy Flaming, Brandon Wheat Kings owner/GM/Head Coach Kelly McCrimmon is set to become the right hand man to new GM George McPhee in Las Vegas.

The Wheat Kings are one of the most recognizable teams in the Western Hockey League, the highest level in Canadian junior hockey. McCrimmon currently serves as the owner, general manager, and head coach of the team that won the championship a year ago and are the current home to Nolan Patrick, the likely 1st overall pick in next year’s Entry Draft.

McCrimmon was offered a position in the Toronto Maple Leafs front office a year ago but turned it down to see out the season with the Wheat Kings. His teams have been wildly successful winning over 60% of their games in the WHL making the playoffs 11 of the 12 seasons he’s served as head coach.

The Wheat Kings are widely recognized for their ability to churn out NHL talent which McCrimmon has not only scouted but also coached during his time in Brandon. Some notable alumni are Jordin Tootoo, Brayden SchennMatt Calvert, Jason Chimera, Mark Stone, and Dustin Byfuglien.

Multiple sources with the Las Vegas organization were NOT able to confirm the hire.

Can’t confirm at this point. –The Creator
