On Thursday the Toronto Maple Leafs were the first NHL club this season to sign an undrafted college free agent. In the past, Vegas has taken advantage of the unique late-season addition. In 2018, the Golden Knights struck gold when they handed Zach Whitecloud an entry-level contract right out of Bemidji State. This year, several players could fill future VGK positions. While plenty of centermen are getting attention, other collegiate forwards could draw the attention of the 31st franchise. So, let’s keep the tradition alive and highlight college free agents that might fit the 31st franchise’s system. Or fill some needs.

Ryan Kirwan
Forward (6’2, 205 lbs)
Arizona State University

This season the Golden Knights have looked far and wide for reliable wingers. They plucked Brandon Saad off of waivers, traded for Reilly Smith, and still have question marks on the wing. Going into next year, Vegas would like to have more depth at the position for both the NHL and AHL clubs. ASU’s Ryan Kirwan is one of those players that could add depth, size, and a strong net-front presence.

The senior Sun Devil’s season came to an end yesterday and is now open to sign with any NHL club. Kirwan has been one of Arizona State’s most reliable forwards all season and deep into the conference finals. ASU fell short in the NCHC semifinals, but Kirwan scored his 26th goal of the season by scooping up a rebound untouched in front of the net. Remember, skill and size win the hearts of coaches and general managers across the league.
