“4 Nations Was One Of The Greatest Experiences Of My Life”

For the first time since the Golden Knights were a franchise, VGK fans got a chance to experience the thrills of true best-on-best international hockey. Mark Stone, Shea Theodore, and Adin Hill suited up for Team Canada and Noah Hanifin and Jack Eichel took the ice for Team USA.

The tournament could have been viewed as a bit of a letdown for Vegas fans. First, before it even started, Alex Pietrangelo and William Karlsson had to pull out due to lingering issues. Then, Shea Theodore was injured in the 1st period of the first game and eventually missed significant time for VGK, finally, Adin Hill never saw the net for Canada.

The players who were able to participate, though, made it abundantly clear that it was an unbelievable opportunity, and fans were treated to a magnificent couple of weeks of hockey along the way.

4 Nations was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I had a great time with it. Fortunate that we were able to get the win and got to play with the best players of all time really for the first time in my life. So that was something I’ll remember forever. -Mark Stone

To a man, each of the players who spoke about it during the season and after made it clear it helped them become better players for the Golden Knights.

Anytime you have an opportunity to represent your country, as an athlete in general, it’s special. It was a really cool experience to be a part of that this year. I think it helps everyone that’s involved in that. It helps you grow as a player. -Noah Hanifin

Next year, the focus shifts towards the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan. Each player that spoke about it though maintained a clear focus on helping the Golden Knights first.

Going into next year, of course, I want to be on the Olympic team, want to make the Olympic team. But as far as personal goals, it’s for me is mainly to be available and make sure that I’m in the best shape I can be to help this team. -Mark Stone

4 Nations was a great experience for me. It makes me want to be able to go to Italy next year. But at the same time, I have a responsibility to be here next year and win with this team. So we’re going to try and do that. So I think if I just kind of focus on what I’m doing here in Vegas and have a good start to the season, the rest will take care of itself. -Adin Hill

It’s an incredible honour to represent your country, but, first and foremost, you want to play good hockey here and build something and whatever comes after, you handle that. -Shea Theodore

Bruce Cassidy made it clear after the season that he didn’t believe the 4 Nations tournament impacted his team negatively in the playoffs. Hopefully for the Golden Knights that’s the case once again next year because they could have as many as eight players representing their countries in Italy.

Losing Shea Theodore Is Awful, But Best-On-Best International Hockey Is Too Important To Be Selfish About It

The fear that everyone had coming in happened, and Vegas are the first who will be forced to live with the fallout.

In the very first game of the 4 Nations Faceoff, Shea Theodore suffered an injury to his hand and/or wrist that quickly ruled him out for the rest of the game and subsequently the remainder of the tournament. The Golden Knights have since announced that he’s out week-to-week. Without question, this exact scenario is what had Golden Knights fans hesitant to truly throw their support, attention, or desire towards the first best-on-best tournament since the franchise’s inception.

There’s no way around it, what happened to Shea sucks. As the head coach of Team Canada said, “it’s a big blow,” “it’s heartbreaking for the kid,” and “a tough one to swallow.”

But this outcome should not condemn the tournament. The play in which Theodore was injured was as normal of a hockey play as you’ll find in any game during the preseason, regular season, playoffs, or even the Stanley Cup Final. It could have happened last week in VGK’s last game before the break or it could have happened the first game when the team comes back. The fact that it happened while Theodore was not wearing a Golden Knights jersey cannot be the sole reason to make a sweeping and selfish generalization on the event as a whole.

And the reason for this is because of what was on display in that game. The level of hockey, the emotion, the pride, and the spectacle of it all was incredible. It wasn’t an exhibition game. It wasn’t meaningless. It was a highly skilled battle between two sets of elite players competing because it’s what is best for the sport. Games like these will hook people to hockey. New fans and more importantly new players will rise the tides of all hockey ships.

And it’s not even like Golden Knights fans were robbed of what came with that game. Sidney Crosby, the league’s best player for nearly a decade, made an incredible pass to Vegas’ captain, and he fired one home to give his country a two goal lead.

In sports that are played by people around the globe, international events are vital to the success and future of a sport. National pride is seductive because there’s no choosing of teams. No matter who you are, you know which group you support. It brings people together in ways league sports cannot. The sense of pride is unmatched, and it was on right there on the television to be seen in last night’s game.

This tournament does not have history. The trophy is not a relic. But, it has to start somewhere. For nine years hockey went without an event that pitted the best players in the world competing against each other for national dominance. Now, we have something. It’s not perfect for so many different reasons, but it’s the beginning of what can and probably will become a massive part of the landscape of the sport.

This time, the Golden Knights are on the wrong end of the necessary side-effects that come with such an event. What we got to watch last night was bigger and better than any game that has been played this season. This tournament and what it will pave the way for in the future is great for hockey, and thus, in turn, will be great for the Vegas Golden Knights. Be sad, be mad, be disappointed, but don’t be selfish enough to let it overshadow the bigger picture. The game itself is why we are all such fanatics about it, and the game deserves the best. International hockey is a part of that and just because it hasn’t been during the time Vegas has existed as part of it, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t.

Jack Eichel Ready To Prove USA Has “Closed The Gap” Behind Canada

(Photo Credit: SinBin.vegas Photographer Brandon Andreasen)

Well, it’s official, Golden Knights star center Jack Eichel is among the best players in the world and arguably the best American in the sport. Sure, it’s debatable but Eichel will be a main focus for Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off. The Massachusetts native will represent his home country for the league’s 2026 Olympic warmup this February and likely Italy a year later. Either way, the fourth-year Golden Knight has high expectations for his countrymen when they don the red, white, and blue jerseys.

With the way the U.S. National Development Program has been producing players lately, and where we feel we are as a country, you look at the talent pool in the last however many years in the NHL, and I think for a while it was Canada on a pedestal by themselves. I think for us, we feel like we’ve closed that gap, and I think this is a great opportunity for us to prove that. -Jack Eichel

This will be VGK’s top playmaker’s first time playing for Team USA in a best-on-best setting. So, he would like him and his teammates to get off to a strong start to the 4 Nations Face-Off. Team USA’s roster is just as dangerous as the other three countries but there hasn’t been much to show for the Americans over years past. Along with Auston Matthews, Brady, and Matthew Tkachuk, Eichel hopes to prove that Team USA has closed the gap and is prepared to tackle Goliath in February.

Eichel mentioned the abundance of developed players coming out of the United States over the years. The US junior team was crowned champions in the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2021 and 2024. However, the American-born players on the IIHF senior circuit have come up short every summer since 1960. Team Canada has ten IIHF World Championships in that time span, including three titles in the Golden Knights era. So, sure, it’s understandable why Eichel and other Americans are fed up with continuously coming up short.

Seven Golden Knights Will Represent Their Country At 4 Nations

The Golden Knights will be sending the second most players of any team to the 4 Nations tournament in February.  Vegas’ seven representatives are behind only Florida’s eight for the most in the NHL. No other team has more than five players set to participate in the event.

William Karlsson will represent Team Sweden.

Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin will represent Team USA.

Mark Stone, Shea Theodore, Alex Pietrangelo, and Adin Hill will represent Team Canada.

The tournament begins on February 12th with Canada taking on Sweden. The US play their first game on February 13th against Finland. The tournament is a round-robin in which each team plays the other three teams, the two teams with the best record advance to the final. The 4 Nations Championship takes place on February 20th.
