Successful First Step, Much Steeper Climb Ahead For Tortorella’s Golden Knights

It wasn’t exactly the stark contrast the Golden Knights were hoping for in John Tortorella’s first game behind the bench in Vegas, but ultimately, they got the necessary result, and at this time of year, that’s what matters most.

We looked nervous in the 1st period, and we were slow. 2nd period was night and day. -John Tortorella

For the 44th time in 75 games, the Golden Knights conceded first, and it sucked the life out of the building. This time, though, it did not compound. They were able to get to the period break down just one goal. Then, like this year’s VGK have done many times in the past, they got up off the mat and got back to work.

It was the defensemen leading the charge offensively in the middle frame that decided the game. First, Rasmus Andersson activated off the weak side to arrive as an option for Tomas Hertl in the slot. Next, Shea Theodore jumped up into the rush, converting on a one-on-none breakaway created by Ivan Barbashev. Finally, Brayden McNabb sent a diagonal pass to the back door for an unguarded Reilly Smith to tap in.

We talked about trying to play up ice, trying to check forward, trying to get up the ice, and just not playing safe. We’ll look at some tape and continue to teach… an aggressive mindset of playing north and playing simple. -Tortorella

Tortorella continued to insist that there weren’t many, if any, true changes to the way the Golden Knights played. The points of emphasis were more reminders of concepts they’ve heard in the past rather than anything completely new.

And that’s where the opponent comes in.

The Vancouver Canucks are not only the worst team in the NHL, they are by far the worst team in the NHL. Their .342 points percentage is more than 100 basis points worse than the league’s 31st-best team. To put that in perspective, Chicago (.453), the team directly in front of Vancouver, is closer to catching the Golden Knights (.547) than they are to falling behind the Canucks.

This has happened before for these Golden Knights. Two weeks ago, they smashed the Blackhawks 4-0 at T-Mobile Arena after defeating the Crosby and Malkin-less Penguins two nights before, and some declared they had “turned the corner.” Heading into the Olympic break, VGK dominated Vancouver before scoring four goals on consecutive shots the following night against the Kings. Each of these instances happened within the last 20 games, and a coaching change was still necessary.

The season has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs that have mostly coincided with the strength of the schedule. Against lesser teams, the best aspects of Vegas’ game have come through, especially at the right times. It hasn’t worked as well against the league’s elites.

Tortorella’s job is to change that.

I just want them to relax. I want them to realize they’re just in a hockey game and allow themselves to play. I don’t want them to be afraid to make a mistake but the mistakes being made have to be done through aggression, not by sitting back. It’s a mindset and that’s what we’re trying to accomplish. -Tortorella

It’s one thing for the mindset to shine through for a 10-minute stretch in the 2nd period of a home game against the worst team in hockey, but that’s the team that was on the schedule in Tortorella’s first game in charge.

It needs to reappear Thursday against Calgary, then Saturday in Edmonton, then Tuesday in Vancouver, then Thursday in Seattle, and on and on and on through the playoffs.

There’s reason for hope and optimism after the Golden Knights fought through some of the same problems they’ve faced and came out the other side victorious. Now it’s time for the next step. Do it again, and again, and again. Step off the rollercoaster and hop on the elevator.

  1. And speaking of opponents…..

The Flames will be here Thursday, a team that got absolutely throttled last night by the Avs.

What team will show up tomorrow? A totally embarrassed and discombobulated team? Or a team with egg on their face and want to put forth a quality effort? Let’s remember they do have a bit of inside information from a certain defenseman.

And speaking of that defenseman, I expect a really nice video package for Whitecloud, and a thunderous standing ovation for him as well!!

    • Thats actually a really good point Larry, which Flames team shows up and even more which VGK team shows up, im hoping a day of practice under the new capo will bring out a better performance tomorrow.

And yes lets welcome back Zach cause he sure deserves it.

Ok so we have been plagued all year by slow starts only to come on later in the game, but last night wasn’t that. Last night “We looked nervous in the 1st period, and we were slow”. So the good news is the regular slow starts are gone, and last night it only happed because we were nervous. Well thank god.

  3. I am certain not everyone ( well I can think of one that might think so) is naive enough to believe they turned the corner. They barely beat the worst team in the NHL – hardly anything to write home about. Sorry it is difficult not to look at this situation realistically. It will be interesting going forward to see what happens – either a miracle or disaster are the potential outcomes. Anything less than that proves nothing. Must be getting difficult to sell seats as I noticed anyone buy for Thursday get a “Special” jersey. Jus to make some happy -here’s to a win Thursday evening .

    • Jose

The potential is there to turn the corner because of the quality of talent on the roster. Nothing in yesterday’s game or any of the 74 previous to that show that they will turn the corner. Just clinging to hope. For the 7000th time, thank God they play in the Pacific division.

    • Pistol Pete

      Blah blah blah

  4. Rrale

I think the important part last night was the VGK did not give up a trying third goal. I was surprisingly happy Hill did not give a third goal, as his usual. At least this year that has been the case.
Not sure I am a Hill hater, but I am not a fan of his. I doubt he will lose any sleep over what anyone here thinks of his play.
As far as turning a corner time will tell. Still too many passes that do not look like NHL passes. I was happy to see a couple passes back to trailing player(s) when it was time for a line change, way to keep possession of the puck.

    Pacific news:

    Rumor is Auston Matthews…..

……..will be traded this summer, to Anaheim, Los Angeles or Utah.

  6. JB

Makes sense. I’m sure he would like to play closer to his home!

  7. KnightWatch

You mean Matthews doesn’t want to play in Vegas with his buddy Mitch?
    Wild Bills replacement.
Oh wait, we’ve already over leveraged the house, all we had available was a coach.

    • knights fan in minny

How about Brady tkachuck Playing for Vegas good friends with the captain could be on the move

      • JB

I would certainly take Brady over Matthew’s! We won’t have the money to get anyone unless we unload some big pieces!

      • KnightWatch

        True. Wasn’t Stoney’s +1 the Cup at Brady’s wedding.

        • knights fan in minny

          If it was that’s hilarious

          • Emmanuel

JB, Brady is a very good to great player but Matthews is the best goal scorer since Ovie and yes “unloading pieces”/not signing Rasmus would be necessary. Bear in mind the article stated its gonna be a trade, I dont think we have the pieces unless Doro/Connelly goes the other way.

You just don’t get it It’s what have they done for you lately it’s what people are saying which sugarcoating everything People are tired of it

    • Pistol Pete

Speak for yourself kfim. What you need to realize is there are readers of mine who value my content and they never post they just go through the posts here from time to time or all the time. Besides this is not sugar coating. I list every good move I can think of they made and there is no doubt they have been very good. Posters can bash the FO if they want that is their choice but my readers appreciate me posting accurate information and in this case reminding all the readers this is a well-run organization from Day One.

      • knights fan in minny

Readers of yours what do you think this is your own site Pull your head out of your **** and get your own column Not everybody enjoys your rah rah rah rah Sounds like to me you think you’re better than everybody else and everybody else is wrong When they have something to say you sure like to correct everybody

        • Pistol Pete

So you don’t think anybody who reads this site values what I have to say? Just because you don’t should not mean you get to speak for the others.

      • knights fan in minny

So you can name all these people who appreciate what you write Get over yourself

  9. Pistol Pete

Forgot the acquisition of Pietrangelo another Cup-winning move. Chronologically he comes after Stone and after Gallant is fired so it should be:

Fired Gerard Gallant, acquired Alex Pietrangelo, acquired Jack Eichel, fired Pete DeBoer won the Cup year six.

  10. JB

Gonna have to rename this as the Pistol Pete blog? You talk about blah blah blah! My god!

  11. knights fan in minny

So you know all these people who appreciate what you write Get over yourself or get some new friends

  12. knights fan in minny

Maybe you should stop jamming the same old thing down people’s throats People would like you Over and over the same old thing

    • rb7

McCrimmon must be sending his resume to all his shills and bots to spread the Poppa-ganda.

He may need his resume if this latest CYA crashes and burns.

    • Pistol Pete

I can’t help myself sometimes kfim. It’s not fair, and this is not even my opinion it’s just the way it is, to bash the FO when they made so many good moves. Above was the first time anybody here listed in chronological order all the good moves. Nothing wrong with putting it up. If it rubs some the wrong way so be it.

I just effing knew starting with Ken if Torts won his first game they would downplay it with the “worst team in the league”. I was ready for it. I was even at the game. Canucks did not play like the worst team in the league even if they are. Just could not let it go.

“People would like you Over and over the same old thing”

Some here do like me. I do have my antagonists you among them. So be it.

“Over and over again” includes supporting the FO I would assume. Anything else?

      • Pistol Pete

kfim time to get over Pistol Pete and move on to greener pastures

      • TS

Kfim and Pp, this is ridiculous!! You two need to agree to disagree, for cryi ng out loud!! We ALL have opinions, and we don’t always agree. But the ONE constant is we are KNIGHTS FANS!! So, shake hands and let it go! We’re on the same side, guys!

  13. Tim

Let’s cut to the chase we have a star studded team that plays like shit. Will that change who knows but myself I have zero confidence we can beat any team on a given night. It’s going to be an interesting off season.

    • Pistol Pete

But Tim having a star-studded team that plays like shit is a correctable problem enter fire Cassidy and hire Torts. Whoops there I go against correcting somebody like I am Mr Know It All and always right never wrong. Just take me as a grain of salt very easy.

  14. Lets talk about the Front Office….yes we won the Cup and we all are forever grateful for that accomplishment.

Traded Suzuki and not Glass because Glass was their first ever pick and could ‘see the ice like no other’

Screwed up the goalie pool starting with turning a very good Subban into a sieve, then the Fleury/Lehner fiasco all the way into the Hill/Thompson/Schmid/ Hart

Whatever happened between the 2 sides of Thompson/FO should have been met with a compromise and a path going forward.

Whatever happened between the 2 sides of Marchessault/FO should have been met with a compromise and path going forward.

Long term contracts with no-move clauses are simply dumb and leave no wiggle room….no compromise and no path going forward.

Signing Theodore to THAT contract made no sense.

Signing Hanifin to THAT contract made even less sense….he is not a shutdown D….he is not an offensive threat….he is not a physically imposing D,,,,he had done nothing to prove himself when acquired but got locked up anyway.

Signing Hill….who needs to go into that one!

Mortgaging our future this past deadline was callous and lacked any foresight,,,,there simply is no justification for the moves that were made and for the assets given up.

  15. Tim

Pistol my man I love your loyalty and yes the Knights have accomplished more then what other teams can dream about. Toronto no cup since 1967, Buffalo no playoff for 14 years, so your right management has done a lot. People are spoiled me included we want to win losing is not an option and right now we are at a watcha gonna do moment. Are we going to revamp our third and fourth line bring in some younger talent or do the same thing even if it doesn’t work. Like I said big off season to straighten things out.

  16. Pistol Pete

Thanks Tim. You joined me as an early supporter of Pav. Now we have Trevor!

    • knights fan in minny

Do some more slurping Mr Know it all

      • Pistol Pete

What’s up all of sudden with this attack Pistol Pete? You’re getting as bad as that political guy who is no longer around.

        • JB

Pete, I know you are not political like that idiot was, but, he dominated this site with his many many long wired posts. So in that respect can you not see how you kind of took over that kind of thing? Just slow the hell down some. Just like that other guy, people just tend to start ignoring or discounting your posts when their are so many, and, constant repeating!
