The Golden Knights’ 9th season has been a bit bumpier than most of the previous eight. The team still sits in 1st place mainly because the Pacific Division is as bad as it has been since Vegas entered the league (which is really saying something), but the simple fact that they once again have more losses than wins will inevitably cause fans concerns.
In hockey, when a team is performing worse than expected, the blame always tends to fall on the shoulders of two people.
First, the head coach.
Earlier this year, Dean Evason took the fall in Columbus. In Los Angeles, there are calls for Jim Hiller’s head nightly. And fans of teams in Nashville, Vancouver, St. Louis, Toronto, and Ottawa are all asking questions of the man standing behind the bench.
Here in Vegas, that has cropped up a little bit, especially during the recent losing streak, but the winning streak that followed directly after quelled most of it, and for good reason, as the Golden Knights have a Top 5, if not the best, coach in the NHL.
So, onto the second guy, the goalie.
Boy, are the pitchforks out in Vegas for Adin Hill.
Looking at the numbers, it makes sense. In his four games since returning from injury, Hill has allowed 17 goals in four starts while posting a .825 save percentage. His last start that generated better than a .900 save percentage was in mid-October, and the advanced stats have plummeted with Hill now carrying a -9.8 goals saved above expected number, 83rd out of 90 in the NHL.
However, as much as hockey fans don’t want to admit it, keeping the puck out of the net is a team game. There’s no better example of it than last night in Ottawa. Two goals went in off Golden Knights players, two were deflections on shots from the blue line, and the other three were shots from directly in front of the goal. VGK turned the puck over at an alarming rate, they were weak in stick battles, and got outskated by a team playing on the second night of a back-to-back.
Could Adin Hill have done better last night? Sure. But, even if he had the best game in the history of NHL goaltending, VGK still would have lost the game by multiple goals because they didn’t score for the first 55 minutes of the game.
The game is a microcosm of the season for VGK goalies, and while their performances as a collective group may not truly deserve the advocacy they’re about to get, the outward hate towards Vegas netminders, and Adin Hill in particular, this season has grown to a fever pitch that deserves opposition.
The Golden Knights roster has changed a lot in the last few seasons, and nowhere is it more noticeable than on defense. Shea Theodore has stepped into the 1A role, taking over for Alex Pietrangelo. Noah Hanifin is playing big minutes, replacing Alec Martinez. Kaedan Korczak, Jeremy Lauzon, and Ben Hutton are filling the roles formerly occupied by Zach Whitecloud and Nic Hague. The collective group has essentially changed one through six, and the new unit is much more offensive-minded than the previous one. This is only going to be exacerbated by the addition of Rasmus Andersson as well.
Up front, VGK have also lost a number of their most important defensive forwards. Chandler Stephenson, Michael Amadio, Nic Roy, and William Carrier are all gone, and an injury to William Karlsson has kept him off the ice for most of the season.
Simply put, the group in front of the goaltenders is nowhere near as defensively sound as the one that helped lead the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup.
It’s easy to watch the puck go into the net and blame the goaltender, but when it happens to every goalie that goes into the net, it should make logical sense to start looking outward.
Adin Hill is the constant, not the variable. He was the one in the net when the Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup, he was the one in the goal for 50 starts last season, and he has been between the pipes for 30 of the last 34 playoff games. He has shown, time and time again, that he is capable of putting up stellar goaltending performances when the play in front of him is at a championship level.
Now, this season, when it hasn’t, it makes little to no sense to place all of the blame at his feet.
It’s not hard to admit that he, along with Akira Schmid, Carter Hart, and Carl Lindbom, could have played better in the Vegas net. But the difference this year is not standing in the crease. If the new look skater group gets back to defending the way VGK did in 2023, this collection of goaltenders will get the job done far more often than not.
Goalies should never be completely free from blame. Every time the puck goes in the net, the last line of defense failed. However, when assessing why it’s happening over and over again with four different goalies in the net, including one that has won a Stanley Cup, blame should lie at the skates of the variable, not the constant.

Just for curiosity, how many times has Hill let in a goal on the first shot of the game?
Sirgoomba
Nov 26th vs Sens at TMobile
Schmid goal on 1st shot
Nov 29th vs Sharks at TMobile
Lindblom goal on 3rd shot
Dec 2nd vs Blackhawks at TMobile
At 18:37 of fist period score 1 – 1
Hart 1 Save
Night 0 Save
January 19th vs Flyers at TMobile
Hill goal on 1st shot
I attend every game at TMobile and take a photo of scoreboard when opposition scores their 1st goal.
Appears to support SinBin as it has pretty much happened to every goalie.

Where was Hart?? He seems to have his act together. I was a big Hill fan, but he hasn’t played for squat since he came back. What I’ve seen of Hart has been spot right on.
Dean
Schmid plays with the same defense and has far better numbers than Hill. Now Im not saying Akira is a top NHL goalie….I only use this comparison to show how garbage Adin is. Unfortunately, we are stuck with him for years as he’s grossly overpaid and no one would trade for him (even if we ate half the contract)
Static
And that defense that played in front of Schmid, played well when he won and didnt play well when they lost. The actual point being made by this article.
Chris
The biggest change, loss and absence is Alex Pietrangelo. Say what you want about the times Pietro got dog-walked a couple of times last year (now apparently exposed as being related to a bad hinge). But he was the foundation of the defensive structure, a smart as nails D around whom the entire defensive structure could be built. Theodore is great as an offensive D; but he is not Pietro. Hanifin has many great qualities (although at times perhaps not having the greatest season); but he is not Pietro.
Because of the load that he carried and fact that he was not as publicly engaging off of the ice, we as a fanbase very likely underappreciated the value that he had for this team.
Emmanuel
“ The biggest change, loss and absence is Alex Pietrangelo.”
THIS!
TS
Chris, you nailed the core problem: we lost the best D player in VGK history. No one can replace his defensive acumen! Wiithout good D men, a goalie is a sitting duck. And, with Hill, he has been slow, clumsy, rusty since his return — and
he has gotten little help.
Leonard Wise
I think you proved your point Schmid isn’t a top NHL goalie and still has far better numbers than Hill. Ken needs some glasses he thinks Hill is goalie he used to be. I think he’s averaged 5 goals per game since coming back. The sooner they unload him the better.
Walt
exactly right. it wasn’t that long ago that I remember a column on sinbin about how the Vgk were near the top this year in allowing the fewest shots, and slot shots, and high danger shots.
so, it is complete bs to pretend that Hill is not a major factor in the Vegas problems.
and it is further bs to lump Schmid in with the names of the other 3. Schmid has far and away better stats than the others because, wait for it, he has PLAYED BETTER than they have…….. period. in goal with the same dmen.
Canada
Agree ,The first goal from Hill the first one last night was Bush league. You have to be ready to play and he was half asleep. We all have seen enough to know he is struggling whether injury or mental he dosent have it . Coments that he reminds us of Lehner are justified he’s flopping around usually out of position . He’s on his knees and he can’t get back in position. I’ve watched him since late last year and he is always leaning back trying to stretch his back . I don’t think he is leveling with the coach’s as to his health . His play would bear this out . Making the odd great save when your out of position on you ass won’t cut it .
Leonard Wise
I remember during the Championship year we played New Jersey a good offensive team he stopped 43 shots many high danger and won the game for us 2 to 1. I remember telling my wife that’s the only reason we won the game. He’d give up 7 or more today against that onslaught.
SMH
Thank you, Ken – very well said & explained. However, most fans (and especially posters on this board) will dismiss your logic out of hand, as it is much easier to just blame Hill for everything (and before him, Pietrangelo; and before him, Lehner; and before him “The Front Office”).
Emmanuel
They are 17th in goals against per game.
but
They are 2nd in shots against per game.
There is mos def an issue in the crease.
Nick Decorse
Sorry I have to respectfully disagree with the article. As can be seen with Hill’s playing of late and the beginning of the season, he is just not very good. His numbers tell a story that bears out in plain sight. He’s out of position constantly, slow laterally and is very weak glove side. Winning the cup was three years ago so we need to stop talking about it. After his injury he should have been sent to Henderson for rehab and play a few games. He’s not NHL ready and his play shows it. Could have Vegas survived a few games with just Schmid and Lindbom, I think so. But yes the defense if the team needs to improve.
DAK
Yes, a horrific game and Ken reported and wrote about how this game unfolded before his and all VGK fans tortured eyes. But behind the scenes i will guess and believe this team had one helluva celebration in Toronto after that game. So lets just rack this debacle in Ottawa up to the lingering effects of a tremendous team hangover. The team is in 1st place of their division and will get back to it in Montreal, eh.
Carmen Kyriakakis
Great point about the game and the part the goalies play. Sad to see how some of the GK fans ready to blame the goalie regardless of how is between the pipes but more so on Hill . My opinion and I stuck to it , HILL is a great goalie but he needs help from the rest of the team .

What are the free agent goalies out there For next year
Richie-Rich
Ken,
How does this “don’t scapegoat the goaltending” stand up when you consider the statistics on the VGK being above average to excellent in shots against and high danger chances given up? That would seem to indicate that the D is doing a very good job to me.
SHS
RR – I feel the same way. You can’t scapegoat the defense when the goalie is not good.
Whitecloud has been with VGK until the last three games, so Ken should not use him as an example either. And Nic Hague, an aging Alec Martinez and Whitecloud are no different than Lauzon, Korczak and Hutton. Yes, Pietro had made a difference, but he wasn’t playing 60 minutes per game so that doesn’t explain the difference as much as goaltending does.
The constant is that the stats show Cassidy’s defensive system working just well this year, other than the goaltending.
DJ
This article pretends as if goalies are asked to make difficult saves every game. Simple fact is, if you watch the games, the better goalie is usually on the other team. This is true of Hill, Schmid, or whoever. This organization continually backs the wrong goalie. Lehner or Fluery and Hill or Thompson
Richie-Rich
Mentioning The Flower will send ThG (if he is still listening) into a foaming at the mouth rage. Don’t do it. LOL.

The Wild are probably going to end up trading one of their goalies but they want a good peace in return A Center
Tim
Hangover from the Toronto game is that the reason they have a losing record? Mark my words nothing lasts for ever. UNLV basketball from 1974 – 1991 was rocking and now who except for a few diehards even watch the game. This town doesn’t support losers believe me and like I’ve said we are long long time Las Vegans so Bill Foley were the same age and you keep fucking around your 1.5 billion franchise will be in the shitter with a half filled area.
Vic
Foley spent $500 million and now the franchise is approaching $2.2 billion. Everything the guy touches is golden…..get it.
TS
Tim, I, too, remember the UNLV glory days under Tark the Shark. The entire city got behind the team as they became Champs for the 1st time. But, post Tark, interest faded as mediocrity set in through the years, and the UNLV sports programs faded.
But, a miracle hpnd recently– the football program has risen from the bottom and is showing signs of success actually winning games!
Overall, Vegas fans have always been fickle, short attention spans. They support a team as long as it’s a winner. Stop winning, and fans move on to the next shiny object. Which was the VGK. Same fate could very well be in store for the Knights. If the VGK become mediocre, the support will fade, and so will the franchise. Just hate the thought, but i’m realistic.
DAK
Tim since you are that old put your readers on. I was referring specifically to the Ottawa game. I was BAR here and loved the Tark teams but how many National Championships did they win from ’74-91′ again??? How many Final Fours did they make??? Knights in 7-1/2 yrs. Stanley cup, Finals twice, playoffs 6 out of 7 years. And with a current losing record in first place of their division. Take your heart meds, calm down and let the season play out. We had a banged up line up against the Avalanche in CO and still hung with them. I reserve judgement till after the Olympics and a healthier deeper lineup.
NAM
I agree that when this team’s defense sucks it can make the goalies look bad. I agree that last night wasn’t all on Hill and it wasn’t Hills fault we lost. BUT I also think Hill is a shitty goalie. Two separate thoughts. The difference between a good goalie and Hill is that a good goalie will actually elevate his team when they aren’t playing well. He will steal a period or two when his team is playing like dog shit. Motivate them, allow them to get their legs or give them some time to right the ship. Hill is only as good as the team in front of them and often times is worse. No goalie can save a team that played as bad as last night, but a good goalie can elevate a team, not just co exist. If AHL’ers and your starting goalie have similar if not better stats then you need a new starter.
SHS
This is 100%, NAM!!!
Dr. Larry
Petro will be in the Hall of Fame and VGK fans should be forever grateful, but he was aging and last year was basically a third pair defenseman due to lack of speed. I also agree it is not all on the goalies, as I think our bottom six without Scissons, Howden, et al. is deficient (which either Wild Bill returning or a trade will remedy) and we need another sniper as we have great players but not enough snipers. However, that said, I go to almost all of the games at TMobile and the eye test tells me our goaltending is subpar. If we are to compete for the Cup, either Hill or Hart need to step up – for Hill I suspect lack of focus. Schmid is OK as a backup, but I don’t think his ceiling is higher than what I’ve seen. It sure is frustrating to go to games and watch VGK fall behind almost every game.
hdbiker7851
Ken – call it what you may – it really makes no difference VEGAS goalies, in fact all goalies as only as good as the entire team in front of them – yes some are better than others but unfortunately, Hill falls into the other category. Hill is not the same poor goalie he was when the Cup was won – he got his retirement package and now VGK are living with the consequences. The Ottawa game is just the latest example of how really bad he is. His attitude in goal says it all. Hopefully the team gets their shit together for the game tomorrow night regardless who’s in goal. They certainly are a better team than what we all witnessed Sunday afternoon.
Emmanuel
Yup, all the G have played so-so (Akira) to terrible (the other 3).
My gut feeling is that the high danger chances are under- counted (its a subjective stat).
I dont believe there is a G out there that will “be better”, I would go with Akira & hope he gets “hot” (which is a term used to descibe fluctuation in play).
Larry
I’m not here to blame Hill for yesterday or for any prior games either, he was off for 3 months and apparently he is what he is.
My issue has been stated here before, in that he was given 2 very juicy contracts .
The first one I understood as he was a Stanley Cup winning goaltender, a hot commodity who would likely have ended up with the $&)&@ oilers had we not signed him for those 2 years, the term was excellent, money not so excellent.
The contract signed last year was wonderful for Adin Hill, but not for the long term health of the organization, the term and money was obscene in my opinion, and now we are living with and through the aftermath of that Front Office decision.
If Hart hadn’t suffered that injury, there was a small possibility we could have off-loaded Hill to the goalie starved Rangers, but that will not be happening. Being a trade is unlikely, something is still telling me our 2 goalies when the playoffs start will be Schmid and Lindbom, at this point none of us can see that as a stone cold asset!
Rene
The team as a whole just stinks.
The Chosen One
It was a mistake to let Logan Thompson go.. we should have made sure that he stays our #1 goalie and just get a backup for him!!!
vgk21
Look at the Nhl goalie stats=
Schmid rates #22 ———–near the top guys
Hart #64
Hill #70 —— near the bottom
and Lindbom #73
NAM
For eye test I actually think Hart is the best of the bunch. He moves really well, has agility, etc, but he has been out of the game too long. He needed reps, conditioning, practice, coach time, etc to peak later this season. Instead got hurt and that probably is the end of his season. Of course fans don’t get to know shit about injuries so who knows. It looked bad, but so did Hill’s injury and he is back.
Holger
I get it, they pay over 6 Million a year to Hill, while e.g Schmid only gets 1.75. So they have to put him to “work”. After returning from injury, Hill should have played a few games with Henderson, that would not end up in a nightmare with Hill like we have it currently. I visit every Knights game at T-Mobile and everyone knows, when Hill is in goal we will lose.
joe manch
this is a weird hill to die on fellas
team having other problems doesn’t mean goaltending ain’t scuffed
Ken Boehlke
This is the point. Team having other problems is largely ignored in favor of “this goalie sucks and it’s all his fault.”
Just read the comments on this article. I’m not suggesting anyone is fully immune from blame, or that Adin Hill is playing very well, he isn’t. I’m saying, there’s much more to it than just the goalie.
