The Rasmus trade should also be considered as insurance if Theo or Hanifin go out.
The 1st is the only valuable piece given up and its gonna be a low pick in the 1st round (even if he pans out that prospect wont contribute for 3+ years). A 29 YO average defensive D & a 2nd rounder, theyre a dime a dozen…..
SMH
Agree with this 100%. Without a clear, rock solid #1 defenseman like Pietrangelo, it’s much better to have three #2 type defensemen than only two. Cassidy can now play match-ups better, and as you say, it builds in some injury insurance. The 3 assets that VGK gave up (low 1st, low 2nd, Whitecloud) will most likely equal 3 average (at best) NHL players. Andersson is far above average. The only real questions are (1) was it the best use of those trade assets to acquire a very good defenseman instead of a scoring forward, and (2) will the upcoming long term & pretty expensive commitment to Andersson (I would estimate 8 yrs @ $8.5M per year) be a good use of the salary cap space?
Emmanuel
All three are #1 D (top 32).
SMH
I disagree, because I don’t think there are 32 true / classic #1 defensemen in the NHL right now. I’m talking about a guy who can play 24+ minutes on a good team, who you want out there against the opponent’s best line, who also drives offense, and can play both the PP & PK well. In my opinion, Pietrangelo was such a player, and our current 3 are a half-step below that level. One clue is their salaries – Theo & Hanifin are around $7.5M, which is not the level you would have to pay a true #1 D-man. Andersson is sub $5M currently, though clearly will get a big raise on his next contract, but probably still will be below #1 D-man salary territory after you factor in the huge recent rise in the salary cap. Do we now have 3 of the top 32 defensemen in the NHL? Yeah, possibly. But are any of them true #1 defensemen? Not in my opinion.

Shane Wright available…..Krak want a scoring W in return.
Theyre giving up too early on him.

Personally I think the acquisition of Anderson was a big mistake, in that way too much was given back in return, along with the cost of a prospective new contract.
Did VGK find itself in a bidding war for his services and is that why I feel we were fleeced? I recognize our #1 draft picks haven’t exactly been stellar, but it seems we could have offered Whitecloud along with that 2nd round pick to acquire a player the Flames were hoping to move anyway.
Speaking of #1 picks, there have been various forums discussing the possibility of Connelly being moved at the Deadline. I know he has spent much time being sidelined which no doubt is hindering his growth and maturation, as a player that had character issues helping him fall down the draft board, he obviously has hockey talent, so maybe in this case let’s wait and see what he’s got.

it was widely reported that the Boston Bruins were the frontrunners and were very close to trading for Andersson, but they hesitated a bit when he said that he wouldn’t immediately sign a contract extension (with any team), and that gave VGK the chance to swoop in. The Bruins trade offer is unknown, but was said to be “a haul” for Calgary. So yes, what we gave up was likely neccessary to get the deal done. Also, keep in mind that we also got Calgary to retain half of Andersson’s salary for the rest of this season, which definitely helps us in terms of maximizing our cap space and potentially allowing for another move(s) closer to the trade deadline. That salary rentention piece is not done for free by Calgary, so a portion of what we gave up was for that bit.

I saw Rondjberg was recalled today, I have NEVER been in his corner, but it seems he has matured and learned how to score, so now I am officially hoping he cracks the lineup and becomes a mainstay.
I also saw Holtz throw 2 really solid body checks against the Flyers, I wonder if he is trying to reinvent himself and make an impression on the coaches that way?

Tuff back to back and our new guy still not cleared by immigration ? What’s up with that? Need at least one of these games next two days!

It does appear he could/can play during the Canadian trip.
However, that leaves not much, if any, practice time, especially if he plays Friday.

During the post game on Monday it sounded insinuated that Rasmus ‘could’ be available for the Canadian games.
