It’s unlikely the Trump administration can definitively discredit the Russia investigation by claiming an attempted coup, based on available evidence and widespread consensus among intelligence agencies and bipartisan Congressional investigations.
Here’s why:
Intelligence Community Findings:
Multiple US intelligence agencies concluded in a 2017 assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help Trump’s campaign. While a recent CIA review, ordered by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, found flaws in the production of that assessment, it did not dispute the core conclusion that Russia’s efforts aimed to benefit Trump’s candidacy.
Congressional Investigations:
A bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report in 2020 also found that Russia had tried to influence the election to help Trump’s campaign. Now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio, then a Republican senator, co-signed that report.
Mueller Report:
Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation found that Russia interfered in the election in a “sweeping and systematic fashion,” although it didn’t find sufficient evidence to establish a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
Durham Report:
A subsequent special counsel inquiry, the Durham report, found the original FBI probe had lacked “analytical rigor” and relied on “raw, unanalysed and uncorroborated intelligence”. However, this didn’t fundamentally alter the conclusion that Russia had interfered.
Obama Administration’s Stance:
Barack Obama’s office released a statement calling the Trump administration’s “treason” claims “bizarre” and a “weak attempt at distraction”. They emphasized that recent documents released by the Trump administration do not undercut the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the election.
While the Trump administration, particularly through Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, continues to assert that the Obama administration “manufactured and politicized intelligence” to launch a “coup” against President Trump, these claims lack support from the intelligence community and bipartisan Congressional investigations. Gabbard has even indicated she has pressed the Department of Justice for criminal charges against Obama, but the efficacy of such a referral is questionable given the evidence presented.

Bannon advised him not to fire the FBI Director warning him they’d get a special counsel if he did.
More than anything the Mueller Investigation was what cast a spell on his first term. He could have just been a man about it. As for extending Eichel the negotiations may be complicated by #16 also on an expiring contract. If he is $6m that leaves only about $1.11m in cap space if Eichel is $12.5m. So Pav’s contract will determine how much above $12.5m they can afford to pay Eichel. If I’m right once McCrimmon has a number for Pav he can do Eichel and Eichel and his agent are aware of this.
As for McDavid that would require not extending Eichel and clearing out maybe another $5m. If Eichel and Marner are really good together we can probably forget about McDavid who may want to stay up there anyways.
