Pietrangelo Carries Tradition Of Elite Cup-Winning Defenseman

Much has been said about the Stanley Cup-winning Golden Knights’ defensive unit. Throughout the 82-game regular season, four playoff rounds, and five finals games, VGK’s blue line was a major reason for the team’s championship run. In fact, Vegas’ defensive wealth compares to past Stanley Cup winners. Each team over the past dozen or so years has had one of the league’s elite defensemen anchoring their backend. The Golden Knights were blessed with one D-man that will be etched into silver twice.

After the Golden Knights were eliminated by the Dallas Stars in the 2020 Western Conference Finals, the organization made a bevy of transactions. Center Paul Stastny and defenseman Nate Schmidt were jettisoned for cap room making way for one of the worst-kept secrets in team history. While the moves felt controversial at the time, the front office arguably overbid but got their man. Without publicly acknowledging it, Vegas’ front office successfully ripped Pietrangelo from the heart of the St. Louis Blues organization. It’s not a coincidence that the Blues have only one playoff series win since losing their former captain.

He was the captain of the team and been a real good player for a number of years for the Blues, won a Cup and he was a big part of it for sure. But that’s the game and people move on. -Craig Berube, STL November, 2020

Vegas was ultimately unbeatable in the 2023 postseason and their defense made way for a successful season run. A unit that was led by the player the Golden Knights transformed their roster for. Since Pietrangelo’s arrival he’s been the defensive leader in playoff minutes (24:14), shots (120), even-strength goals (5), power play points (5), game-winning goals (1), and penalty minutes (47). He was bought for the postseason and after three go-arounds with the Golden Knights, he proved to be worth every penny.

I don’t think anyone needs motivation to win the Stanley Cup. That’s why we’re all here. Every year that goes by and you don’t win you see someone else win and it makes you even more hungry. I talk about my experiences but a part from that I’m here to win here. That’s my job. There are a lot of hard days in this business. You make it to the conference finals, you lose in the first round, you lose in the second round. It’s easy to get discouraged. When you go through the trenches with guys, especially in the playoffs, that’s when you become close. – Alex Pietrangelo, Feb. 2022

There’s an argument that Pietrangelo is the most important acquisition in franchise history. Of course, plucking Mark Stone from the Ottawa Senators in 2019 was a club-altering deal as well. Sure, add Jack Eichel to the discussion and Alec Marinez to a lesser extent. Along with Stone, the Golden Knights were under the umbrella of Pietrangelo’s experience and leadership. His 2019 Cup run with the Blues was the main reason The Creator and company targeted the prized free agent defenseman in 2020. Along with Martinez and Chandler Stephenson, the 2020-21 Golden Knights had several champions in their nightly lineup.

Pietrangelo is a different type of leader than Stone, Martinez, Reilly Smith, and everyone else with a locker room voice. He’s more comparable to a Fortune 500 chief operating officer than a rah-rah cheerleading-type alternate captain. The 33-year-old defenseman led by example on and off the ice and his influence earned the Golden Knights franchise their first Stanley Cup.

After three seasons with Vegas, it’s clear that Pietrangelo is a businessman, family man, and one heck of a d-man.

    except when he “iced”
the puck into the crowd in last 30 seconds of game.

No. 27 had clearly played better, especially with that save on puck that got behind Hill.

    • Petro fan

You are absolutely tripping!!! Pietrangelo and Martinez are the top pair!!! You disrespecting Petro big time!!! You should be grateful he’s with us!!!

  2. Jailbird

Petro is not one of my favorite players. My main complaint is, as. Big d-man, his lack of use of that big body. I have just always saw him as kind of a wimp.

You disrespecting Petro big time!!! This dude is a Hall of Famer!!! Watch urself

    FO really sucks

    • Pistol Pete

Best GM in the NHL. Met him briefly by chance. Nice humble man.

      • Pistol Pete

The “shiny toys” Stone, Petro, Eichel have all been validated. Adin Hill, and Ivan Barbashev two more very smart moves. Just a well managed team, good organization from top to bottom pure and simple.

“If Vegas hires Bruce, they’ll win the Stanley Cup next year,” Bergeron purportedly said.

I’m a big Pietrangelo fan. I think he is worth the 8.8 million cap hit for now. He is going to obviously decline with age and the last two years could look sketchy.

I’m very curious to see how the goaltending situation will play out next year. I have complete trust in the best front office in the league. It would be nice to see Adin Hill back, but I would be completely fine with Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit if it makes sense financially and fitting everyone of the cap. We all get caught up with recency bias. Adin Hill had a tremendous playoff and was actually pretty good in the regular season as well. No one can take that away from him. However, we can’t forget that Logan Thompson is an all-star and has been great ever since he came into the league. We also can’t forget that Laurent Brossoit was good as well, including playing very well against Winnipeg in the playoffs.

Sorvino, IDK if just ” good” is enough to win championships with. Hill was not just good, he was phenomenal. Best of the Playoffs. LIGHTS OUT. Can LB give us that?, .he seems prone to injury. LT was promising when we needed him, but also got injured. ( Have other goalies elsewhere been injured like our own goalies have?)Hill seems to have durability. He is definitely NOT a China doll out there. TOUGH AND STRONG.
I feel Hill IS Vegas Hockey,– we NEED him!!

      • Sorvino

Great points TS. In the end, and I think you would agree, I trust with the front office will do.

      • Howard

It’s a matter of biz and Hill doesn’t fit into a hard capped NHL world. Hill deservedly will get over $4M per and VGK FO isn’t going to pay him that when they have LT under contract for cheap. If you want VGK to continue their run and a chance for the Cup again next year, then signing Hill would be a mistake.

    • Pistol Pete

Alec Martinez looks good for 35 so I’m optimistic Petro will @ 37 (the age he turns his last contract year). He’s that kind of athlete. Well conditioned, watches his diet, he’ll be good to the end.

breaking- pervert agenda raises its sick/twisted ant humanity agenda at dodger stadium

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ “Pride Night”( known in real world as pervert night) arrived on Friday, with the protester and police presence you would expect after weeks of controversy stirred up around the guests invited to the event.

The Dodgers received criticism from Catholic and conservative figures when they announced they would be giving an award to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group of people who dress in drag as nuns who were among the first people to **rest of sentence deleted as it as feeble attempt to marginalize and normalize their agenda **

The team reacted to the backlash by uninviting the Sisters from Pervert Night, leading to an opposing backlash from its other Pervert Night partners. It eventually apologized and re-invited the Sisters, drawing further condemnation from the likes of former vice president Mike Pence and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.

Many, including the Dodgers’ longtime ace Clayton Kershaw, criticized the Sisters for supposedly mocking Catholicism, which includes dressing up as nuns, an act the organization does as a protest against the church’s treatment of the LG ** rest of sentence deleted as another attempt at marginalization and twist/spin.

The end result of the controversy was a “prayerful procession” held at a parking lot outside Dodger Stadium before the “Pride Night”** game, which ended up shutting down the main gate into the stadium. ** fancy name for sick / twisted agenda, no pride at all in this agenda.

Be wary, the perverts are infiltrating our culture 24/7

Eventually dinosaurs like you will die off.

Rather than spend your remaining years stewing in bitterness and hate, why not enjoy life?

The Vegas Golden Knights just won the Stanley Cup. This is a place to enjoy that win, not a place for foaming at the mouth hate filled rants.

Enjoy life because it is passing you by.

      • THE hockey GOD

no we will not die off or succumb to the perverted agenda, like you have.

        get a clue.

  7. Jailbird

I think most would prefer keeping Hill and hopefully we can, but it’s all about numbers. They won’t sign both Hill and LB. Also, we need to find a way to keep Barby and Howden. We’ll see. Parade tonight! (Ps – if you have the ability to watch ESPN+, great behind the scenes look of the playoff and lots on the Knights, it’s very good)

    • TS

Jb, HILL is superior to LB, I feel. Seems like a clear choice, providing cap $$$ is there. No contest, in my view.

It’s all Quest for the Stanley Cup

  9. knights fan in minny

not allowing a power play goal is unheard of or did they get one in game 5 cant remember.

  10. Jailbird

Nope, we shut their ass out. 0-15 or something like that. That is amazing! No one talks about that much, but big factor in our win!

  11. THE hockey GOD

    going to parade

got a seat in the FRONT ROW

    !!!

  12. Jailbird

Not gonna lie. I want to go, but not able to work out traffic and a place to view. Plus my wif is a little under the weather. Not going to submit her to 4-5 hours of shoulder to shoulder humanity. Great coverage on local channel #13 and the NHL channel. 20 years younger and I would say hell with it, I’m in. But reality is what it is. It’s fine I’ll enjoy anyway! Good luck with those front row seats, 50 people back!

  13. Jailbird

I’m sure it’s on numerous channels, to a degree, but the Knights official coverage is on channel 13 starting at 6:00 pm.
