NOAH HANIFIN (D) ACQUIRED BY GOLDEN KNIGHTS FROM CALGARY FLAMES

According to multiple insiders (Dreger, Johnston, Friedman), the Golden Knights have acquired defenseman Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames. The Golden Knights gave up a 1st round pick, a conditional 3rd round pick, a 5th round pick and Daniil Miromanov. The 3rd round pick becomes a 2nd if the Golden Knights win one playoff round.

The 27-year-old defenseman has scored 11 goals and record 35 points in 61 games this season. He is a puck-moving D-man who also is a trusted penalty killer.

Hanifin’s contract is expiring at the end of the season with a $4.95 million cap hit. Calgary is retaining half of Hanifin’s salary and Philadelphia is retaining half of that half, which means VGK are on the hook for 25%, or $1.2375 million.

There are conflicting reports about an extension coming with the trade.

Hanifin now that was a nice pickup. 29 versus Martinez 36 just keep getting younger. If Mancha can play up to his potential that’s going to be a big help. Were hearing there trying to do something with Guentzel the talk shows are going to be buzzing tomorrow. If we finish as a wild card some higher seated team that will have to play us is going to have a coronary.

    • ThG

      Mantha, not Mancha.

Maybe you should call him macho ?

  8. Pistol Pete

Hanifin should make a fine partner for an aging but still highly effective Petro. What a move by McCrimmon. A third party could increase the salary retention to 75% hopefully leaving enough cap space for Guentzel or Buchnevich.

kelly doing his magic keep it rolling

    • Tim

Pistol Pete your an avid fan and I usually like your posts but as I told you the other day don’t get crazy and sell the farm for any player including Guentzel. Hanifin was highway robbery for what we gave Calgary who cares about our draft picks same with Mantha’s second and a fifth. I’m sure there going tp resign Hanifin and we replace Martinez at 36 with Hanifin at 27 you just got to love our management team. Like I said the team with a much better record and if were a wild card team is going to shit to have to play us in the first round. It’s going to be fun I’m born again after the last 3 months of mediocre hockey at best. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

    • ThG

i’d like to see him paired with whitey, move hague up with petro

  9. Jim

The Golden Knights, who are still finalizing a massive trade to land top-pairing defender Noah Hanifin and have already added winger Anthony Mantha for added scoring depth this week, have also demonstrated interest in Toffoli, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports.

  10. Pistol Pete

Btw the Hanifin deal is inter-divisional. Thank you Flames. Now if you could just bow out of the wild card race we would appreciate it .

    • knights fan in minny

the boys still have to win games

      • David T

So true. I miss most games on TV, so I listen to the games on the car radio while working. So I’m not up on all the players, etc. What I have noticed though, is they always fall asleep for a period before getting it in gear. By the time they get it together, it’s too little, too late.

  11. Jim

8:31 p.m.: Eric Francis of Sportsnet reports that the trade has not yet been registered with the league due to complications involving a third party offering additional salary retention in the deal. Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg adds that “it could still be a little bit” before the full details of the trade are announced.

  12. Jim

    elliot Friedman—

Hanifin return isn’t finalized as third-party involvement is still being finalized. But it includes D Daniil Miromanov and a first-round pick.

  13. Jim

The Vegas Golden Knights have acquired defenceman Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenceman Daniil Miromanov, a first-round pick and a conditional third-round pick, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

    • Jim

The conditional pick upgrades to the second round if the Golden Knights win a playoff round and the Philadelphia Flyers will also retain some of Hanifin’s salary in the deal.

Dreger also reports that a contract extension is in the works for Hanifin.

  14. Bobby

Great work by Kelly. More trades please!

  15. Henderson Knights

Capfriendly says that VGK now have $3.8 M in deadline cap space…to acquire another winger I hope.

  16. goldenwrangler

I don’t mean to cause trouble I am trying to learn the game but why don’t the VGK defenseman seem to score anymore like they used to under DeBoer?

    • Emilio

DeBoer activates his Dmen a lot more. Join an active offensive play. Cassidy not so much. He looks to keep his Dmen in position and ready to set up the forwards for offense but done through a more defensive structure.

    • knights fan in minny

      fair question

  17. Pistol Pete

Vegas still has their 2024 1st as the Hanifin trade is a 2025 1st. Clearly McCrimmon is saving ammo to acquire either Guentzel or Buchnevich. Furthermore there is speculation Martinez goes on LTIR with a broken foot freeing up more cap space. If they pick up Guentzel I would expect McCrimmon to extend him along with Hanifin. I would be aghast if he spends all this for rentals. Sadly, signing Guentzel and Hanifin will leave not enough room for Marchy but this is what it takes to keep the roster vital: acquiring elite veteran talent at key times. Guentzel and Hanifin would be around $17m leaving around $4m to sign the other UFA’s and RFA’s. May end up being bye bye to Stephenson as well moving Roy up into the top nine. Buchnevich is a different story. Land him and there will be enough room to extend Hanifin and Marchy but not much left over for Stephenson. Actually, if he gets Buchnevich with 50% retention (2024-25 cap hit = $2.9m) that should leave enough to extend Stephenson as well!

    • TS

Pp, broken foot? I missed Marty’s injury..
Is that a REAL injury, or a Cap space move?

    • vgk21

they won’t trade the 2024 1st pick because the draft is in Vegas in June

    • VGK Fan

They only have 19 million in cap space next year provided Lehner remains on LTIR. With 17 players signed for next season they can’t shell out 17 million for 2 players without moving some large contracts out. I like Guentzel but he cost to much to resign next year Buchnevich makes more sense.

  18. Pistol Pete

Btw Hanifin (6’3″ 207-#5 pick)) is the same draft year as Eichel.

  19. knights fan in minny

day 2 what does kelly have up his sleeve

  20. ThG

i would rate hanifin trade for VGK as grade A, note VGK picks are conditional meaning they could move them around.

I would rate the Mantha trade as C+ or B-, coach is going to extract some
    performance out of it.

    sez me

  21. Jim

The Vegas Golden Knights have announced the full trade package – sending a 2025 first-round pick, a conditional 2025 third-round pick, and defenseman Daniil Miromanov to the Flames. The first-round pick carries top-10 protection, while the third-round pick will upgrade to a 2024 second-round pick if Vegas advances to the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Vegas also sent a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers to broker the deal. Calgary retained 25 percent of Hanifin’s $4.95MM cap hit, while Philadelphia retained 50 percent, meaning he’ll only count towards $1.2375MM of Vegas’ salary cap. Philadelphia sent the rights to 27-year-old centerman Mikhail Vorobyov to Vegas to facilitate the salary retention.

  22. knights fan in minny

thats big on the salary save

  23. Tim

Toffoli a good player but at his age not sure I’d chase him. Guentzel is a definite no his quote of I’m not resigning I’m strictly a rental kind of turned me off on him. For what Pittsburgh wants for him I hope everyone backs off and the greedy Penguins get left holding the bag. There’s other teams and players who needs there bullshit plus he has a upper body injury so I wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole. Kelly keep doing what your doing first excitement from the Knights in 3 months.

Canucks Expected To Sign Phil Kessel
    MARCH 7, 2024

The Canucks are expected to sign free-agent winger Phil Kessel through the remainder of the season before tomorrow’s trade deadline, Chris Johnston of The Athletic and TSN reports.

Kessel, 36, had been linked to the Canucks as far back as last summer. It became apparent last month that Vancouver would be his next NHL home after Canucks GM Patrik Allvin announced Kessel had traveled to the area and would be skating with their AHL affiliate in Abbotsford.

Vancouver must sign Kessel by 2 p.m. CT on Friday to make him eligible to play in the postseason. Players not on their team’s reserve list at the trade deadline are ineligible to play in the playoffs.

A three-time Stanley Cup winner, including just last season with the Golden Knights, Kessel still carries value as a depth winger with decent scoring ability. While he was a healthy scratch for most of Vegas’ playoff run, he appeared in all 82 regular-season games, continuing his league-record streak of 1,064 consecutive games played.

    @frank_seravalli

Guentzel update: Not definitive, but sounds like teams in mix are CAR, FLA, NYR, VAN and VGK.

Unless something changes, belief is FLA + VAN have made strong push but don’t have goods to pull it off.

Of note: VGK could potentially create more cap room if Martinez goes on LTIR.

  26. ThG

    VGK got another russian

cAlso, #Flyers sent rights to reserve list player Mikhail Vorobyov to #VGK to complete the paper part of the deal.
