After years of teasing it, the NHL has finally released the advanced stats gathered from player and puck tracking data. All of the stats can be found at NHL.com/edge including team, skater, and goalie specific numbers.
One of the most interesting numbers tracked is distance travelled. Jack Eichel led all Golden Knights last season travelling the most distance in a single game. On March 3rd against New Jersey, Eichel skated almost four miles in his 23 minutes of ice time. He finished the game with a total distance of 3.89 miles travelled, almost a full mile more than the league average of 2.92 per game.
Eichel also led the team in distance travelled per 60 minutes played. Brett Howden was a close second and Paul Cotter leads the pack so far in 2023-24.
(Measured in miles) | 2022-23 | 2023-24 |

Another good piece of data is the hardest shot. Sine the data has begun beign tracked in 2021-22, the Golden Knights have seen two shots recorded at over 100 mph. One by Alec Martinez last year, and one by Nic Hague against Anaheim this season. Eichel, Dorofeyev, and Amadio recorded the hardest shots by forwards last season.
(Measured in mph) | 2022-23 | 2023-24 |
---|---|---|
Martinez | 100.31 | 96.52 |
Hague | 99.06 | 100.02 |
Pietrangelo | 99.03 | 81.64 |

Kolesar | 84.51 | 77.12 |
Stephenson | 83.47 | 83.01 |
Carrier | 80.85 | 83.24 |
Finally, there’s skating speed. The league tracks top speed measured at any point while a player is on the ice. Unsurprisingly, Vegas’ fastest skater is Eichel. It is a bit surprising that the fastest recorded this season is Paul Cotter.
(Measured in mph) | 2022-23 | 2023-24 |

Whitecloud | 21.65 | N/A |
Cotter | 22.45 | 22.96 |

McNabb | 19.70 | 18.67 |
There’s a lot of fun information on the new NHL.com/edge site. I highly recommend you check it out and see what you can find. Plus, get ready for a lot more articles referencing it all too.

Wow. Look at Mark Stone’s numbers. Slowest forward, and the least distance traveled.
Jailbird
Stoney is not a fast skater, we all know this. In fact sometimes he looks like he is skating, bent forward, using an old man’s walker for support. Ha. But he always seems to end up where he needs to be. Looking forward to tonight vs Philly. Could be an interesting game?

I’m not sure what this tells us. The speed is meaningless as their is at most around a 2MPH difference btw the F’s, considering the size of the rink that’s miniscule. Distance travel is more thought provoking. Would this make them a better PK F? Not sure of the distance means they actually did SOMETHING (like check or get in the way or hustle to retrieve the puck). Since the consensus ‘better’ and ‘worse’ skaters are spread all over the list i’m not sure how useful this is…

Stone is one of the top puck handlers in the league. He’s a master at it. Speed isn’t an issue for him. He’s not really a 200ft player. You will see him in the NZ and OZ but won’t very often see him skating 200ft.
Surprised about Cotter’s numbers. I am really excited about the future for both Cotter and Dorofeyev.

The stats are nice, but what is missing from the data is the most important thing (according to ESPN and Yahoo news)…..The Yotes D-man Dermott and his tape of choice. Now, something called the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition has agreed to ‘represent social causes and advocacy’ through stick tape.
NHL not happy enough with Bedard and nice ratings. I’m holding my breath so see how stupid the stick tape will look. So besides endless advertising and causes littering the ice, boards, and uniforms, now the stick tape mania begins.
Insanity out in the open. NHL is polluted like the other sports. Shame.

“NHL Player Inclusion Coalition has agreed to ‘represent social causes and advocacy’ through stick tape.”

Its a way for a very small % of the population to impose themselves on the majority. Its the same 6000 year old story, 1-2% of people controlling the 98-99%.

ok , the first comparison stats on VGK goalies against the other six goalies, in Strat the most important situation is when the other team’s player gets a game situation in o zone which leads to either an outside shot, inside shot, or rebound/breakaway chance. On the other team’s player card this can lead to a “goalie rating” , in which you roll two six die dice (2 -12) and then go to the defending goalie card. This accounts for about 1/3rd of scoring chances, but is a critical event in the game. So let’s see how strat rated the VGK goalies – thompson and hill, against the carolina goalies. Note the odds calculations are very similar to craps dice game.
Ironically both cards for VGK goalies are very similar, the stats are almost identical for the whole year. 91.4 % to 91,5% save %s. Just looking at goals dice rollls 2-12 which provides for 36 outcomes
LT – 2 Goal 1-7 , 8-20 faceoff {{ Hill has same only 1-9 goal with 10-20 faceoff on splits) which accounts for the 0.1% difference in save percentages. This provides a slightly less than 1 out of 36 chance of goal result, or more precisely accounting for the splits 0.35 out of 36 for LT and 0.45 out of 36 for Hill.
the both have seven as a goal !!!!!! six out of 36 chances for scoring a goal , in event of goalie rating.
they both have roll of three resulting in goal , for a 2 out of 36 chance
and they both have a roll of 11 resulting in goal for another 2 out of 36 chances.
So adding up all the chances LT is
>>>>>>10.35 and Hill is 10.45 out of 36 chances.
Other differences Hill give up more rebound changes with rebound on roll of 8 to LT s on a four. And on a roll of 12 (1 out of 36 chances) Hill gives his team a chance of a break away (13 out of 20) where as LT saves it.
Ok let’s move on to Carolina goalies Raanta (91% SV%) and Andersen (90.3 SV%).
Anderssen – Goal on roll of 3 with split 1-14 out of 20 for 1.7 / 36
goal on roll of 6 , 5/36
goal on roll of 7, 6/ 26
total 12.7 out of 36
Raanta
3 goal 1-12 out of 1 to 20, , for 1.6 / 36
6 goal, 5/ 36
8 goal , 5. 36.
total 11.6 / 36
So cards got it right, showing VGK goalies with clear edge.
NExt up we’ll look at Florida or Boston.
Will get into the forward and defense after the goalies comparisons.

Thg – you obviously have way too much time on your hands – better get a useful hobby or part time job to keep yourself occupied. LOL. Didn’t you say you were going to Cailfornia to live on a boat, or did that fall through? Not even sure what value the article has to begin with other than keep Ken busy.
THE hockey GOD
HD biker, Strat is a hobby, been playing it since it came out in 1960s !
in regard to the boat, I AM STILL WAITING !!!
Part time job ? What’s that ?
Rashaad
Hdbiker, That wasn’t very nice of you to insult the hockey God.
