Missed Chances And Lack Of Crunch Time Goals Caused VGK’s Second Round Exit

(Photo Credit: SinBin.vegas Photographer Brandon Andreasen)

The Golden Knights have now been shut out seven times in their playoff history. As we are all painfully aware, in the final two games of the Second Round against the Edmonton Oilers. That’s 28% of their entire postseason droughts in one short series. Obviously, Vegas struggled to score in the final two contests but looking back at their offseason and deadline decisions, should fans be surprised?

I wouldn’t overreact to the fact that we didn’t score enough goals. It wasn’t a chronic issue that you would have expected to be our demise in the postseason.” -McCrimmon

This season the Golden Knights scored 11 more goals than they did last season and allowed 39 fewer. It should be considered a major success. Based on the final standings and seasonal statistics, Vegas looked to be in a better position to make a deeper run than they were a year ago. Unfortunately, neither of the last two rosters qualified for the final four. When only two years prior, the Golden Knights were the last club standing.

Unfortunately, we lost too many close games. That was the difference. We didn’t score the last two games. That’s the difference. – William Karlsson

In 2023, Vegas had a true blend of balance on defense, goaltending, and offense. This postseason, there was a significant imbalance. Especially against the Oilers in the Second Round. Against Edmonton, Vegas’ inefficiencies on offense were a glaring problem. Of course, the Golden Knights blue liners had problems of their own, but they didn’t lose in five due to poor defense. It was VGK’s 12 forwards that earned the lion’s share of the blame. In key moments, the goals didn’t come.

VGK’s Missed Shots vs. Edmonton

  • Ivan Barbashev: 8 Missed Shots (7 Missed Wide, 0% Shooting Percentage)
  • William Karlsson: 7 Missed Shots (5 Missed Wide, 1 Missed Short, 1 Post, 28.6% Shooting Percentage)
  • Victor Olofsson: 7 Missed Shots (7 Missed Wide, 20% Shooting Percentage)
  • Brett Howden: 7 Missed Shots (7 Missed Wide, 0% Shooting Percentage)
  • Jack Eichel: 6 Missed Shots (3 Missed Wide, 2 Missed Over, 1 Crossbar, 0% Shooting Percentage)
  • Nic Roy: 6 Missed Shots (6 Missed Wide, 25% Shooting Percentage)
  • Brandon Saad: 5 Missed Shots (5 Missed Wide, 0% Shooting Percentage)
  • Shea Theodore: 5 Missed Shots (5 Missed Wide, 0% Shooting Percentage)

On top of the constant shots missing wide from the Golden Knights, they were also hampered by the Oilers’ willingness to block shots. Edmonton recorded 104 blocked shots in five games against Vegas. That combined with VGK’s elevated missed shot total, and it’s no surprise they went scoreless for the final six periods of the series.

It feels like a wasted year. -William Karlsson

It’s easy to pick on them now, just a few days after being eliminated from the playoffs. However, when it came down to big moments in the Second Round series,  the Golden Knights didn’t do what they were built to do. According to the front office, the 2024-25 Golden Knights had the depth, offensive weapons, and skill to compete for a second Stanley Cup. Several of those extended players were absent on the scoresheet.

It’s a game plan that everyone knows that it’s going to the net. Now you have to build that in, it doesn’t happen overnight, especially if you have guys who like to hang onto pucks and make plays. It’s personnel-driven too. We have to start looking at that as an avenue to create offense when things aren’t going well. When the going gets tough, this is a way to generate. -Bruce Cassidy

Defensemen Noah Hanifin and Shea Theodore are paid handsomely for their offensive abilities, sadly they combined for 3 points in five games. With the exception of a few superb defensive stands, both were severely limited. It looks much worse when you add in Theodore’s -7 for the series.

Offense is tough at this time of year. It’s not about scoring six or seven goals, it’s about scoring one more than your opponent. And scoring big goals. I think that’s where it comes down to, we weren’t able to get the overtime winner. You look at the Minnesota series we did. It’s more or less just getting the big goal, and we weren’t able to get it. – Mark Stone

Stone opened up about the team’s lack of offense, or more specifically, getting that one important goal. The elusive key scoring play that changed a game or the series. Reilly Smith had one in overtime of Game 3, but his club couldn’t build off of that potentially series-shifting score. Stone himself was part of the problem. After registering the first two goals of the series, the top-line winger went quiet.

Middle six skaters like Ivan Barbashev, Pavel Dorofeyev, and Brett Howden failed to provide any offense in the second round after playing major offensive factors in the Golden Knights regular season and in the previous round. Unfortunately, it was more missed wide shots and not enough quality chances.

Going into the next season, Vegas will need to find or identify that one confident weapon that will score in desperate situations. They’re tough to come by, and dare I remind everyone that VGK’s front office let one walk 320 days ago.

We need a top scorer/sniper and some tuff players. We need physicality period. Right now we are push overs. We need more crazy toughness, fights, a couple nut jobs that can still play. We need a Tom Wilson type. Trade Petro, Theo. Do SOMETHING to bring life and desire to this team!

    • Richie-Rich

Neither Petro or Theo are going anywhere. Take a look at their contracts.

    • knights fan in minny

Nick Ealers and Trent Frederick would be a start

    • Don Moore

we have top SCORERS… THEY WENT FLAT ,,,,,IT HAPPENS look at Jets…look at Boston back a couple of years ago,, look and the Leafs…. Look how many times we beat OILERS… THAT IS WHAT MAKES the playoffs so cool…You just want to make it in and if your team can go hot….YOU HAVE A CUP…. Look at the 2023 season we where hot….thats the Playoffs. you get them next year

      • ThG

we had eichel feeding marchy, this year we had eichel feeding no one. And very spotty goal tending. In 2023 our goalie was lights out.

        • Frank

This! Lack of scoring and inconsistent defense and goaltending let us down… Big time.

      • TS

Don, did you watch TOR / FLA game 7 last night? TOR got man- handled at home, horrible game for them. Any team can suffer a loss like that, even the BEST teams. Their loss somehow makes me feel better about OUR team…

  2. Richie-Rich

Wow, a total of 51 missed shot attempts and a total of 1 crossbar and 1 post. That’s pathetic. Definitely need fresh wingers.

  3. Richie-Rich

#14 Nicholas Hague is a restricted free agent (RFA). The Golden Knights must make him an offer by June 25th in order to retain his rights. This is important because if another team offers Hague a salary that the Golden Knights are unwilling to match the VGK would get compensatory draft picks based on the AAV that Hague receives from the new team. The Golden Knights can also choose to match the offer and prevent Hague from moving at all.

I think Korczak is ready to be a full time NHL player. Hague has been a defensive third liner. There is a lot of upside to letting Hague walk. Offer him what he is currently getting or choose not to match an offer.

I know Hague is a fan favorite and he isn’t a bad D3. But, in this case its best to take advantage of the situation.

    • Emmanuel

Youre right on both Korczak & Hague.

Its funny that almost every player is called a “fan favorite” & why is that always used as an excuse for not trading them or loudly asking for them to be re-acquired?

Pretty much every players been called a “fan favorite” except for Tatar & Mantha!

    • ThG

hague is best fighter in league, if he’s gone then VGK will be pussy whipped more than they are now

They have all these different awards they should have one for best passer Eichel would win hands down. He’s a player that isn’t using the talent God gave him. Am I the only one who goes bonkers on how many shots he passes up. Theadore may be tradable if we can keep bullshitting everyone how good he is. We all know he has more turnovers then anyone, Unfortunately Stone and Petro aren’t going anywhere.

    • Emmanuel

To be fair almost all Offensive D have tons of turnovers. It should be balanced with zone exits.

Coincidentally Eichels giveaways/takeaways went from 60/42 last season to 28/90 this season! BIG red flag.

      • Emmanuel

I flipped the take/give stats so to be clear he tookaway 28/gaveaway 90. Maybe too much trying to skate singlehandedly thru the other team?………The team certainly has to look into that.

        • Anthony Fagiana

There is no “maybe” about him often trying to singlehandedly take the puck into the zone. I was yelling at the TV all the time whenever he tried it and inevitably gave the puck away to the 3 defenders on the other team who had him surrounded. It was frustrating to watch.

Many of the forwards had career years—Eichel, Barbashev, Hertl, Dorofyev, Howden and Kolesar. Many were based on a strong offensive binge at the beginning of the series or on the PP. Neither correlate with playoff scoring. Unfortunately it is unlikely those players will match those totals next year.

    • Emmanuel

Id be shocked if Doro ever matches this years goal total BUT his shooting % has reamined steady thru his NHL career, he just got more playing time so he could surprise. Scouts are rarely wrong and he dropped to the 3rd round, maybe hes “just” a pure sniper and will be shaky defensively and as a passer. If youre only going to do one thing well thats it!

Youre right about Howden its a career year, Kolesar got way more TOI so it accounts for his points jump. The other 3 guys are all over the place stats wise every season.

You can’t even spell a player on your own team. Take the cock out your mouth faggot.

Tyler, you’re a real man, aren’t you? Your comments through time are the same: uncalled for, crass, dirty. Closet gay, maybe?. Woman- hater, no doubt? Be proud, it’s who you are.

  7. TS

Kfim, Could it be Hertyl HAS been playing somewhat hurt(still?), but toughed it out and finished the season? His play/ production dropped off at season’s end..

    • knights fan in minny

      Very possible

    • Personally I believe that all of our ‘hurt’ players were in fact playing with lingering injuries from the ones they sustained during the year.

Barbashev was lights out until his injury and then produced very little thereafter.

Theodore ,with very few exceptions played poorly especially defensively after his return.

Hertl was quite obviously affected by being smashed from behind into the boards….which btw was met with a shrug of their collective shoulders from his teammates…. which is another story for another day , but still needs to be addressed and remedied by bringing in players with grit.

Eichel was most definitely not the same elite player he was after suffering the late season injury.

It just seemed like the entirety of the team were gripping their sticks too tightly for too long, afraid to make a mistake, but sadly for every mistake made there was not an answer to offset it and make things right.

I’d like to believe the FO will take few days off in searching for the answers to the question marks that surround the team, and make them a more complete squad come October and more importantly in May and June.

      • Emmanuel

        1. The Oil were much improved in playoff experience.
        2. They were hungry after last years close shave.
        3. Drai is WAY WAY WAY better defensively.
        4. They have the best Oil blueline by far in decades.

        We barely survived the Wild.

      • TS

Larry, absolutely! And as you wrote, it wasn’t just Hertyl who was likely playing hurt
..Thanks for pointing the others out, as well. These players’ production dropped a BUNCH, and here we are now.
On to next season, maybe a few fresh faces and fresh hope for a better year…

        • Thanks TS…unfortunately the proof was in the pudding by the results we saw on the ice….it definitely wasn’t pretty…. all we can do is wait and see how and in what ways the Front Office approaches the off season to improve the team.

  9. The hockey God

Listening to GMKM statements today, he is missing a few facts if he thinks this team is ready to make final four next year without some major changes. Like big forwards to play in front of net, and another winger than can play with Eichel (and Stone is only one close). PAvel, nope, not ready. Marchy was a great winger able to play and handle Eichel’s quick passes. No one else other than Stone is close.

    • Emmanuel

VGK are roughly in the 5-10 best team in the NHL group, that translates to winning 1 round and having an outside chance for the Cup. They played as expected.

      • Frank

Agreed. They need a legit scoring winger or two and consistent goaltending to push them over the top.

  10. Bob K

My take on the Oilers series came down to Perry, Kane, and Janmark inflicting punishment at every opportunity with little response. The Knights as a so-called heavy team were manhandled. Kelly McCrimmon needs to pay attention to the “toughness” of this team. I expect a lot of changes to this year’s roster.

    • They have been called a heavy team,,,a big team…a physical team for so long by the talking heads of the NHL Network and TNT as well….it has long been a misnomer or mis-classification as all they have are tall and weighty players…that does not translate into being physical unfortunately.

When Cassidy was signed on as coach, one of the very first thoughts I had was he would turn Hague into a tough physical defenseman to make opposing forwards pay a price….you cant invent size but when you have it it must be utilized!

      • TS

Re: Hague: i was told that Hague was indeed a fighter in the lower leagues.. yet he seemed hesitant to “get tough” when we were getting pummeled. He did step up in the Playoffs more, wish he had shown that during the season. I’ve been hoping for a tougher team.for years, as we repeatedly got played/ pummeled by other teams, yet offered no response to it again and again.
Yes, it hurts to hit. But it hurts a helluva lot MORE to BE HIT. The team needs to toughen up, man up and start countering all the battering they receive!!

        • TS

Coach is a Defensive-minded guy. But isn’t countering these attacks by opposing players part of that concept??

          • Emmanuel

            Tougher=more penalties=more opponent goals+more injuries

            Theres ALWAYS a trade off.

        • TS…. Couldn’t agree more about the lack of physicality….im not as concerned about it during the regular season but certainly hoped and felt it would be amped up come playoff time but simply never materialized .

  11. Personally though I hold the stars just a notch above the }?*&^% oilers in the pantheon of teams I loathe and wish to see lose, I am very happy it is the stars that advanced as I believe they will emerge victorious in their quest to reach the Finals and send the %$#$%} oilers packing.

Tomorrow night I expect the panthers to beat the leafs as they looked like the better overall team, and will advance to the Eastern finals,

    • TS

Leafs are still in it! Good for them to not fold when backs were against the wall… i like a team that doesn’t fold when in a hole…

      • First 10 minutes of the game is all panthers, leafs fortunate to be in a scoreless game.

    • 10 minutes to go in the second period and it’s 3-0 quite obviously my opinion has not changed lol

      • TS

Larry, THAT was a really poor game by TOR…and here i was, thinking they were tough to not fold. But they DID fold in game 7…I’d hate to be a TOR fan right now…

        • TS, outside of the fact they panthers didn’t score in the first 10 minutes, their utter domination and offensive zone presence took me back to a happier time….namely Game 5 and the greatest 5 minutes VGK has ever played!!

Tax relief is finally coming to middle-class Americans.

Democrats are fuming over who gets what.

And House Republicans just unveiled a tax package that has average Americans smiling all the way to the bank.

Official report shows major tax cuts for average Americans
The nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation dropped a bombshell report that confirms House Republicans’ tax plan would deliver double-digit tax cuts for average Americans.

The analysis shows Americans making between $30,000 and $80,000 would see their tax bills slashed by around 15 percent in 2027. Even more impressive, taxpayers earning between $15,000 and $30,000 would enjoy an even bigger 21 percent cut in what they owe Uncle Sam.

This comes as Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee push forward their $4 trillion tax cut package paired with $1.5 trillion in spending reductions.

“Do you think billionaires are financing their cars?” asked Rep. Aaron Bean (R-Fla.) during a contentious committee meeting. “Do you really think Elon Musk is working for tips?”

Bean’s comments came as Democrats repeatedly tried to frame the tax package as a giveaway to the wealthy, despite clear evidence that middle and lower-income Americans would see the largest percentage reductions.

Democrats can’t accept tax relief for working Americans
Even with official numbers showing substantial tax cuts for ordinary Americans, Democrats continued their attacks.

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) claimed the plan is “a trick” because some provisions helping families would expire in 2028, while provisions like estate tax relief would be permanent.

“You do it temporarily so you can get through the 2026 election,” Moore argued, “and then these benefits for children and elders and workers disappear, while the tax benefits for the ultra-wealthy soar.”

Democrats have focused their talking points on the total dollar amounts going to different income brackets rather than the percentage cuts each group would receive. According to the report, people earning over $500,000 would see an aggregate tax cut of about $170 billion in 2027, compared to $59 billion for those earning between $30,000 and $80,000.

What Democrats fail to mention is that high-income Americans pay far more in taxes to begin with, so even smaller percentage cuts translate to larger dollar amounts.

Republican plan focuses on families, workers, and seniors
Republicans have designed their tax package to deliver relief where it’s needed most. The plan would:

    Expand the Child Tax Credit to support families raising children;
    Increase the standard deduction, putting more money in Americans’ pockets;
    Create new tax breaks for tips and overtime pay, helping service workers and hourly employees;
Provide special breaks for seniors living on fixed incomes; and
Deliver relief for Americans paying car loan interest.
These targeted provisions are specifically designed to benefit working and middle-class Americans, retirees, and families – not the billionaires Democrats keep invoking.

The battle over winners and losers continues
The JCT report is likely to intensify the partisan battle over the tax package as it moves through Congress. Republicans can point to concrete evidence that their plan delivers substantial percentage cuts to average Americans, while Democrats will continue focusing on dollar amounts to claim the wealthy benefit more.

What’s clear is that Americans across income brackets would see tax relief under the Republican plan. Even those making over $1 million would see their tax bills drop by 8.6 percent – significantly less than the 15 percent cut for middle-income earners and the 21 percent reduction for lower-income Americans.

The committee analysis doesn’t include every aspect of the Republican plan. It omits potential increases to the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap beyond the proposed $30,000 limit, which would primarily benefit upper-income households in high-tax states.

It also doesn’t account for spending reductions Republicans are planning that could affect programs like Medicaid, which Democrats argue would disproportionately impact lower-income Americans.

As the battle over tax cuts continues, ordinary Americans are watching closely to see if Washington, D.C. will finally deliver much-needed relief to their wallets after years of crushing inflation.

  14. Pistol Pete

I would say marginal health affected our postseason results including Saad out, Stone gone for game five, McNabb playing with a blatant injury and Hertl, Barbashev and even Eichel may have had lingering effects. Besides health the postseason struggles are tied to better defensive structures than we saw in the 2023 run including the Wild. Seems teams have been taking notes over what Cassidy has been doing and it’s working for them. Time for Bruce to make some adjustments plus time for McCrimmon to replace Barbashev with a higher priced power winger. It’s what Jack needs plus Jack has said he will work on shooting the puck more himself.

I like this team’s chances to make the playoffs the next two years bridging the gap to when Stone’s and Petro’s terms will be up freeing ip $18.3m. They may not have a deep run until they retool but at least they will still be a good team.

    • Emmanuel

      Im all about probability.

“They may not have a deep run until they retool but at least they will still be a good team”

That is the most probable outcome unless a Pacific team suddenly makes a BIG jump in the standings and only 3 Pacific teams make the playoffs, that is my only worry.

  15. Pistol Pete

Not sure what happens with Smith, Saad and Olofsson but Korczak easily replaces Hague. Steer clear of Barbashev’s eight no trade teams and you get picks and/or ELC prospects freeing up around $5m bringing the cap space to over $15m.

    • ThG

Barby’s buddy is on team, unlikely to be moved, unless both get moved to same team.

As he pointed to in the past, center depth (Eichel/Hertl/Karlsson/Roy) is excellent as is the D corp and that includes replacing Hague with Korczak. At issue are the top six wingers as the only constants pending free agency are Barbashev, Stone, Dorofeyev (Smith, Saad, Olofsson UFA’s)

    Projected 2025-26 cap space: $10.54m
    Minus Barbashev: $15.54m
    Minus Hague/add Korczak: $17m
    Boeser @ $8.5m leaves $8.5m Smith/Saad/Olofsson

That’s fine just wish Barby would be a more consistent goal scorer and points producer. He’s just not in Boeser’s class. If McCrimmon can swing it it’s worth the upgrade. I also think Pav would work on that line as LW. He’d keep improving with those two for sure.

    If Boeser enters free agency:

    AI Overview
    +7
There are rumors circulating about Brock Boeser’s potential departure from the Vancouver Canucks, and the Vegas Golden Knights (VGK) are among the teams mentioned as possible destinations if he becomes a free agent. Boeser has expressed uncertainty about his future with the Canucks, and the 28-year-old is a highly sought-after free agent.
Here’s a more detailed look at the situation:
    Boeser’s Uncertainty:
Brock Boeser has stated that it’s “unlikely” he will return to the Canucks next season, indicating a potential departure.
    Free Agency:
Boeser is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, which means he can sign with any team.
    VGK Mentioned:
Some sources have mentioned the Vegas Golden Knights as a potential landing spot for Boeser, suggesting interest from the team.
    Other Potential Destinations:
Other teams have also been linked to Boeser, including the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild.
    Contract Negotiations:
Boeser’s contract talks with the Canucks have been ongoing, with the Canucks reportedly offering a 5-year deal and Boeser seeking a longer term agreement.
    Trade Possibilities:
There have also been rumors about the Canucks potentially trading Boeser, though they ultimately opted to keep him for the season.
    Boeser’s Performance:
Boeser has had a solid season with the Canucks, recording 25 goals and 50 points in 75 games. He also set a career-high with 40 goals and 73 points in the previous season.
In conclusion, while there’s no confirmation of Boeser’s departure or a specific destination, the Vegas Golden Knights are among the teams being discussed as potential suitors if he becomes a free agent.

Boeser’s career stats are nearly identical to Marchy slightly higher actually but just a little. He’s 4” taller and more than 30 lbs. heavier. I’d rather him with Eichel than Marner because he’s a pure goal scorer plus he’s at least $4m cheaper.
