Misery Loves Company: VGK Not Only Team To Experience Four Straight 3-0 Deficits

(Photo Credit: SinBin.vegas Photographer Brandon Andreasen)

The Golden Knights found themselves in a three-goal hole late in the 1st period against the Blues. It felt like the sky was falling until Vegas stormed back to win the game 5-4 in overtime.

Three nights later, once again, Vegas saw 3-0 on the scoreboard, this time against Pittsburgh. Back-to-back games falling behind by three felt improbable, yet once again they stormed back only to come up a bit short.

A couple nights later, it happened again! 3-0 turned to 4-0 against the LA Kings and it’s officially reached epidemic levels.

Then, Saturday. 1-0 in the 1st. 2-0 in the 2nd, and what do you know in the 3rd, 3-0 again for the fourth straight game.

All we could do was shout things that Jackie Chiles would say. “That’s deplorable, unfathomable, improbable!”

Here at SinBin.vegas, our first thought was, this has to be historic. 3-0, four games in a row, there’s no way anyone else has done this in a decade. Wrong!

In fact, a team currently residing in 1st place in the Pacific Division did it just two months ago.

The Calgary Flames fell behind 3-0 against the Coyotes, Golden Knights, Avalanche, and Blue in four straight games from November 16th to the 21st.

Falling behind 3-0 in a game isn’t nearly as rare as it would seem. Every single team in the NHL has done it at least once, and 24 of the 31 teams have done it at least three times this season.

There have been 706 games played thus far this season and in 143 of them a team has jumped out to a 3-0 lead. That’s 20% or one in every five games!

In only nine of the 143, the trailing team came back to win as the Golden Knights did against St. Louis.

It’s not just bad teams this happens to either. Calgary has fallen behind 3-0 on 10 separate occasions this year. Washington has seen it happen to them seven times, Carolina seven, Dallas six, and Winnipeg, Philadelphia, and the New York Islanders each five.

Vegas has found themselves in the now familiar 3-0 hole six times. The only difference for the Golden Knights is that they have been doing it at home. Five of the six occurrences have happened at T-Mobile Arena. Of the 143 total, only 58 happened to the home team for 41%.

Aside from the Flames and Golden Knights, no other team has fallen behind 3-0 more than twice in a row. There are 15 times in which teams have done it in back-to-back games however.

I’m not really sure what any of this means other than that Jason and I have way too much time on our hands looking this up. Maybe you’ll sleep easier knowing the Flames stink too? Or you can just go back to more Jackie Chiles-isms…

It’s outrageous, egregious, preposterous!

Always enjoy when you “dig” in to things Ken. My concerns aren’t necessarily the 3-0 deficits but more about that they came at home and against a bottom feeder on a back to back night and against a team basically starting it’s AHL roster. I’m very concerned about their woe’s at T Mobile. I have this feeling that you will start seeing massive visiting team crowds again as local ticket holders decide to sell off tickets rather than pay premium prices to watch your team sleepwalk through a game. I honestly think this homestand and especially those last 2 losses cost them any chance of winning the division this year

  2. DOC Williams

Yes! Too much time, spent on, yet again, stats!!!!! 🙂 How about using some of that time writing down meaningful questions to ask Gallant? Still love ya Ken.

    • Give me a list of questions you want asked to him.

      • DOC Williams

Well Ken ….. Here’s one suggestion of a questions that most of us would like answered: WHY !!!!! When Gallant says we just didn’t skate tonight or We were like playing in sand or We didn’t get off to a good start (again) etc…. Ask him WHY is that coach. WHY are these things REPEATEDLY happening. WHY >>> WHY >>> WHY !!!!! OR WHAT are YOU going to do about it!!!!!!!!! We are just tired of his standard answers, with no one calling him out about it!!! (Oh, regarding the ridiculous ticket prices. Knights just announced a 13% INCREASE for next season).

I feel the Knights have priced the original sth out of the arena .the ones that got them the hockey team .even friends that have six fig.jobs are feeling the pinch and pretty soon will be replaced by corporate companies buying their tickets .That’s disturbing to me .what happened to caring about the real fans

Ken you usually have good points this article isn’t one of them. I could care less what teams fell into the same deep hole I’m only concerned about us trying to climb out of that deep dark hole. The fact is their paid professionals and theirs always an excuse no sense visiting all the excuses were all aware of the. =Here’s a fact I’ve lived in Las Vegas since my army discharge in 1965 and I’ve seen Vegas burnout with losers. When Tark was here the place was packed since 1991 he’s been gone check out basketball attendees. College football started here in 1968 and has never done well. When they first started the talk was oh we’ll be in the Pack 10 in 5 years well 50 years later there still a bottom feeder in the Mountain West. George and Kelly better wise up these full houses with outrageous pricing will go the way of the dinosaur.
I’m only interested in seeing the team play hard win or lose but this years version of the Knights are like children always with an excuse. My wife and I start watching all the games we get down two or three who in there right mind are going to continue watching the onslaught. Time to flip the channel to a movie because we don’t have the fire power to come back.

  4. Tim – spoken like a true military man – no BS – their well paid professionals just do what you are being paid to do – play hard win or lose no excuses.

More often than not the less said the better.

Right or wrong ….. Gallant is gone. Very shocking!!! But at least, no more BS answers at pressers hopefully!!!! Replaced by the guy Gallant called an idiot (or something like that), last year. Ironic indeed!
