Karlsson’s Best Comes Out In The Playoffs

To this day, William Karlsson continues to be one of the Golden Knights most underrated players. Since his magnificent 2017-18 season, the sixth-year Golden Knight has had to live up to his career year, leaving some fans to overlook his two-way impact. He was even given the nickname “Mild Bill” by some frustrated for more offense. Well, hopefully Karlsson won back some fans after his outstanding effort in the opening round of the playoffs.

William Karlsson vs WPG:

  • 5 Points (4 Goals, 1 Assist)
  • 11 SOG, 36.4% Shooting Percentage
  • 17:51 ATOI, 1:39 Shorthanded Minutes Per Game
  • 40 Face Off Wins, 55.6% Face Off Percentage
  • 2 PIM, +3

Karlsson was reliably effective in the offensive zone, but his tight coverage of the Jets weapons was what stood out. While he didn’t do it alone, VGK’s two-way warriors limited Pierre-Luc Dubois, Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele to 8 points in five games. That’s the lowest production for all three players per game this season. Jets coach Rick Bowness had nothing positive to say about his heavy hitters after the series ended in five games. On the other bench, coach Bruce Cassidy couldn’t say enough positive things about Karlsson throughout the quarterfinal series vs Winnipeg.

He’s been our most consistent guy. He’s got a lot of jump, for whatever reason. Been real good on both sides of the puck. I love the way he’s playing. -Bruce Cassidy

Without Karlsson’s offense, the Golden Knights would’ve averaged 3.0 goals per game as opposed to the 3.8 GPG in five contests against Vezina candidate Connor Hellebuyck. The Swedish center scored four times in the series, with each goal having significant influence. Karlsson broke up a shutout in Game 1, recorded the game-tying goal in Game 2 and extended the lead in Game’s 4 and 5. Along with Mark Stone and Chandler Stephenson, the 30-year-old center was a major problem for Winnipeg.

On the flip side, without #71’s defense Winnipeg likely would have averaged more than 2.8 goals per game.

His motor is impressive. You think it’s a 3-on-2 for them and he just appears. He brings it. He plays the middle of the ice as well as anyone. -Mark Stone

Vegas will need more execution from Karlsson next round against the Edmonton Oilers or LA Kings. Covering Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are a lot more challenging than Winnipeg’s top offensive players. In 18 career games vs. Vegas, McDavid has 24 points and in 19 career games vs. Vegas, Draisaitl also collected 24 points. That’s a combined average of 2.52 points per game against the Golden Knights. Without another strong 200-ft performance from Karlsson, the Oil’s stars could overwhelm VGK’s defense and goaltending. LA creates problems of their own as well.

Lastly, fans should expect Karlsson’s offense to continue to be a factor in the second round. In 22 career games vs Edmonton, #71 averages 0.72 points per game. However, his best offense will be his defense. Draisaitl, McDavid, Anze Kopitar and other matchups will be plenty to deal with. The good news, the top-six center is up for the task.

So many have been hard on Wild Bill since that break out VGK year 1! It’s nice to see him contributing more on the offensive side of the ice in round 1. Hoping to see that continue on as the playoffs progress!

          This is Satan.

Good evening knights fan in minny. Satan hopes you are doing well on this beautiful Minnesota evening. I believe the temperature is 50°F which is perfect for a nice walk with a light jacket. As you know, it just doesn’t get that cold in hell. I enjoy reading your posts. From what I have read, it seems that you enjoy and encourage the physicality part of the game. We are definitely on the same page on that one. I love this team but I do wish we were a bit tougher. Winnipeg did push us around a bit. Anyways, have a wonderful weekend.

Wild Bill does a lot of little things, great on face-offs, stays out of the penalty box, plays a 200 foot game, doesn’t make bad passes, whats not to like.

  7. THE hockey GOD

jason with yet another, in long line of, jinx articles

how about writing about players on other teams for once, broaden your myopic and limited writing sphere. Get out of the local bubble.

  8. Vic

Karlsson turned it around at the midpoint this season looking like he did in year 1. Felt like he lost his passion, but thank no doubt to the posts that he reads here, he decided to turn it around.

Kings having a rough time tonight with the Oil. If the Kings somehow win this series, the game plan is fairly simple. If it’s the Oil, then coach will need to come up with a plan to score 4-5 goals every game, stay out of the penalty box (the Oil scoring at greater than 50% on the PP), and somehow slow down the two stars who are playing out of their minds (even though there are others to worry about). Have to outscore them and their less than stellar goalie. Go Kings. Pull off the miracle…even though they have matched up well with the VGK (tired of watching the Edmonton Dynamic Duo).

  9. Jailbird

    Bring them f*ckers on!

  10. Karl

What is hockey god problem with Satan. Satan seems like a nice guy. Hasn’t said anything mean to anyone. Weird screen name though.

    • Arnold Rothstein

      Karl
The guy posting as the devil has posted as multiple other people. The others were trolls, including TS ALEX who relentless harassed TS, the woman who posts here. And harasses Hockey Fan in Minny.

He’s a piss of shit, and he / she / it is now mimicking the anti Hocky God poster. He thinks he is being funny, but he’s not fooling any of us who have been around here since day 1.

      • TS

Arnold, at least Satan is polite! He’s the best of all his personas, and he actually knows Hockey…I’ll pick him over the BS posted that has ZERO to do with Hockey ANY DAY!!

  11. Satan

    This Satan.

Mr. Boehlke, Satan is seeking an update on the status of Logan Thompson? Has he at least begun skating? Thank you and keep up the good work.

    Satan has spoken.
