Kaedan Korczak Has VGK Staring At An Abundance Of Defensemen

(Photo Credit: SinBin.vegas Photographer Brandon Andreasen)

The Golden Knights defense corps is stacked. But is it too stacked?

Since the addition of Noah Hanifin, there’s a strong argument that Vegas boasts the strongest and deepest blue line in the NHL.

Hanifin and Alex Pietrangelo are the best top pair in team history. Brayden McNabb and Shea Theodore have played together for more than 500 games with great success the entire way. And Zach Whitecloud and Nic Hague were lauded as the best third pair in the league during VGK’s run to the Cup less than a year ago.

Another guy is knocking at the door though.

(Kaedan) Korczak I thought did a really good job for us. He added some pace to our blue line in terms of his ability to move pucks and skating ability. He’ll push for a job next year. I fully anticipate that. -Bruce Cassidy

The 23-year-old former 2nd round pick got a taste of the NHL this season, playing 26 games and adding nine points. He proved he’s already an NHL-caliber defenseman and with more experience he’ll only get better.

Finding him a place to play is the tougher job at the moment though. It took an injury to Whitecloud to get him into the lineup the first time, then he needed injuries to Theodore, Ben Hutton, and Tobias Bjornfot to get his second chance, and once Hanifin came along he wasn’t even participating in practices with the team in the playoffs until Hague’s injury.

The Golden Knights know though, if he’s good enough to play, they’re best served getting him in the lineup night in and night out.

We want to infuse some youth into our lineup if they’re ready, but we’re not putting them in if they’re not ready. Every good organization that’s how it happens. The more you can push guys the stronger your organization is because now you have other assets that maybe you can improve other areas of your team. -Cassidy

As it stands, there’s a logjam that doesn’t benefit the team in the long term. Sure, it’s nice to have eight useable defensemen to deal with the inevitable injuries the team will face in the regular season, but that extra player could help the Golden Knights solve some of the depth issues at forward that will arise when the dust settles on free agency.

The team’s belief in Korczak has a chance to drive the biggest offseason move of the year.

Biggest off-season move – trading Theo for a 1st rd pick in 25 or 26, plus more. Money has to go out to sign forwards. His $5.2M will go a long way, given KK is his likely replacement (or Hutton). Neither Zach nor Nic have contract amounts worth trading simply to save cap space – both of them combined are less than Theo makes and the return wouldn’t be much.

Marty’s salary ending is $2M less than what Hanifin’s contract adds. And Hertl’s $6.75M cap hit is a locked-in constraint on money available for forwards.

    • NAM

I agree Mike. I think this HAS to be the move this offseason and I think KK showed he could handle that spot and/or Hutton too. I never like seeing the misfits go, but this is the move to make with what the team currently dealing with.

  2. Richie-Rich

Korczak is a very good chess piece for Kelly to work with. I’m for keeping him and window shopping Whitecloud. Cormier is also a great puck handler and quarterback himself. If he improves on the defensive side Theodore might also be in that window with Whitecloud.

  3. ThG

maybe move Theo to wing, his d abilities went way down after returning from IR

    • ThG

at his point in time it looks like the Sharks fleeced VGK FO in hertyl deal, subject to change should hertyl somehow not get injured all the time and regain some of his skating ability. And Mantha also. But everyone here who knows anything about hockey is likely thinking the same thing.

what does FO have left in their magic bag of tricks ?? Brisson, KK, no. 40 (!) pavel, Vikman the goalie ?

    • JB

That’s really what he has been anyway. I always thought of him as a winger with defensive responsibilities. He’s such a soft player though, not much help along the boards!

      • JB

Was talking about Theo there. As far as Hertl, everyone is so quick to judge after a few games, just coming off the surgery. He has been a good player for a long time. That will not just disappear!

        • Totally agree JB, and Ive stated it here before too. Hertl was coming off of knee surgery with no real reason to push himself in rehab as he wasnt going to return to the sharks lineup the rest of the season, suddenly he is traded to VGK and tries to speed up the process, which if anyone has gone through any type of surgery it takes time to heal and be recovered. without suitable practice time, without suitable game time, without a suitable spot in the lineup, without suitable linemates to practice and jell with, thats the Hertl we saw in Round 1, but that will NOT be the Hertl we see once the 2024-2025 season commences!!

    • Richie-Rich

Have you seen Theo on the forecheck or backcheck? It’s not his forte. At best he’d be a 4th line winger, something that the VGK does not need.

  4. ThG

Here’s the Vegas Hockey Now List of Their Top Five Prospects

    1. LEFT WING/RIGHT WING BRENDAN BRISSON (DRAFTED 29TH OVERALL IN 2020)
With eight points in 15 games, Brisson, 22, has proven he can contribute at the NHL level. That’s a 44-point pace. When the roster reshaping is done next fall, Brisson may have a place on their third line.

The Golden Knights asked Brisson to improve his all around game this season, and he worked on it for Henderson in the American Hockey League. He is trying to become a more effective forechecker and a.stingier defensive forward.

Vegas coaches need Brisson to be ready for next season because salary cap concerns could leave their forward depth thin.

    2. GOALIE CARL LINDBOM (DRAFTED 222ND IN 2021)
Swedish puckstopper Carl Lindbom, 20, made more progress than any other Golden Knights prospect this season. He was given consideration for No. 1.

This year, Lindbom enjoyed a memorable season for Farjestads BK Karlstad, posting a 17-7-0 record with a .911 save percentage in the Swedish Hockey League. He played four games for the Swedish National Team, posting 4-0 shutout against Finland in an exhibition game last month.

Lindbom was drafted in the seventh round, third from the bottom, in the 2021 NHL draft. He has developed impressively since then. He will need AHL seasoning, but there’s every indication he is headed to the NHL.

    3. DEFENSEMAN LUKAS CORMIER (DRAFTED 68TH IN 2020)
If the Golden Knights move a veteran defensman to open up cap space, Cormier may be first in line. Cormier, 22, has logged 120 games of American Hockey League experience.

He’s a creative offensive defenseman who competes hard. Cormier is under six feet. He needs a coach who trusts his offensive instincts and believes in his all around game. He’s probably going to be a No. 4 defenseman or a third pairing guy.

The former Quebec Major Junior Hockey standout can run a power play.

    4. CENTER MATYAS SAPOVALIV (DRAFTED 48TH IN 2022)
The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder Matyas Sapovaliv can be the big center every NHL coach wants. The Czech standout posted 62 points in 54 games for the Saginaw Spirit in the Ontario Hockey League.

He’s already a decent all-around player, effective in the faceoff circle and always mindful of his defensive responsibility.

Sapovaliv is more of a project than a finished product. But he is intriguing.

    5. FORWARD MATHIEU CATAFORD (DRAFTED 77TH OVERALL IN 2023)
After registering 90 points in 65 games this season for the Halifax Mooseheads, Cataford picked up a pair of assists for the Silver Knights. He can shoot, pass and battle.

Cataford, 19, isn’t going to develop into a first-line performer, but he should be able to produce offense at the NHL level. But it will be a while before we see him in Vegas.

  5. Emmanuel

They need to move forward from a lot of signed players.
Im still not convinced some of the NMC guys wont be moved.
They have a right to veto it, but they have egos and a “ill show you” mindset.

my guess is a big draft day deal as theyre hosting and their pick is pretty low
And they pretty much HAVE TO move bodies.

Teams like Chicago and Utah could use a Theo.

Many of the big names in Southern Gospel were smokers and drinkers. A friend of mine played drums and piano for a well known SG trio. He got invited on to the Florida Boys bus. He said the refrigerator was full of beer.

Re: Big Chief. I hate to belabor the Elvis connections yet again, but I think that it must be noted that Elvis was, by his own admission HEAVILY influenced by both Jake Hess and by Big Chief. Elvis not only borrowed Chief’s hiccuping bass delivery, but Chief was also known for his near-scandalous hip-wiggling at times, well before Elvis or Rock N Roll. If you watch carefully in the older 1950s clips, Chief can barely contain his legs from “getting the Spirit.” Hovie also did his patented hair-flop and piano-bench kick-out 5 years before Jerry Lee Lewis did those moves. The Statesmen invented Rock N Roll!

Sadly, people remember the song and “Get on the phone!” but most have not a clue why it was played and why the phone calls were asked for. Giving was and still is the most neglected subject in Christianity, the most abused, the most misunderstood, the most disrespected by the world, and the one treated the most dishonestly in most churches. And it is the most essential for a life of faith in Christ.

The ironic fact of that was that Jake and Chris Hess were his singers in residence.

@Djm8520 Don’t know if it’s ironic; all those guys ended up out of the ministry (the Unband) in not too long a time. It took decades to find musicians who didn’t create problems.

@kennethbesselman5739 Want. Not need. That ministry has never run appealing on need, only on “I teach, you received God’s Word, you owe.”

@muddflappmohicann7639 – On the Dr.Gene Scott show was the first time I heard this song. I can’t find much of the Dr’s sermons and shows on video anywhere.

@joeysn7hvn Pastor Melissa Scott (Gene’s wife) several years back said that she would not show unedited Gene Scott teachings because in the past Gene Scott complained (frequently) about other pastors but had since made amends before he died. There is not much if any re-editing being done apparently to take out sections where he bad mouthed other preachers. She said that making those old ones available without the comments removed would re-open rifts that had been repaired. It’s my personal opinion that the classic euGene Scott would be more popular than what she had put out herself. All kinds of stuff like UFOs, reading Bullinger’s Witness to the Stars, The pyramid decoded, bird’s nest soup. Many others gone by the wayside. The other thing was that if Dr Gene Scott read or talked about anyone else’s content (like other authors) then Pastor Melissa Scott would have to pay the author’s organizations some money by Dr Gene Scott redistributing original material from the original authors. It appears that even DeloresPress doesn’t sell much of the stuff you might expect. If it wasn’t original material from Gene Scott, it’s been purged from the public. I’ve searched by title and by code like S-4344 Christmas is a heathen mixture. not found

The Statesmen – I Wanna Know

            01

            {Intro}
…but here they are from Atlanta, Georgia, those fellas that everybody loves: The Statesmen Quartet and Hovie Lister, for the next 15 minutes!

            {Chorus}
I want to know that my Jesus (He) will welcome me there
I do not want to be denied
I want to live in that city so fair
That’s enough for me to know
I want to know that my Jesus (He) will welcome me there
I do not want to be denied
Let me live in that city so fair
That’s enough for me to know

            {Verse: Big Chief}
I do not know the day my Savior will call
I must be prepared to go
Here from earth I know he’ll call me, o Lord
That’s enough for me to know

            {Chorus}
I want to know that my Jesus (He) will welcome me there
I do not want to be denied
Let me live in that city so fair
That’s enough for me to know
I want to know that He will welcome me there
I do not want to be denied
I want to live in that city so fair
That’s enough for me to know

I want to know that my Jesus (He) will welcome me there
I do not want to be denied
I want to live in that city so fair
That’s enough for me to know
I want to know that He will welcome me there
I do not want to be denied
I want to live in that city so fair

For SG lovers of that time, they probably didn’t care, they just wanted to hear Big Chief get those low notes. Using Jesus to hype the crowd, awful. I got that sense from nearly everything from the Statesmen, and from most of the Blackwood Brothers songs too – although the Blackwoods found themselves in an uncontrollable praise break when they sang “The Old Country Church” in Long Beach, captured on one of their live albums.

Thq, you poor, lonely, sick man. I feel sorry for you. You obviously can’t control yourself. You have never learned the lessons of life. What is appropriate, what is clearly NOT. You have zero insight or concern for others. A self- absorbed, self-appointed god. You think YOUR shit don’t STINK.
You’re the BIG HENRY of all Henries. You whine, bitch, attack the ” others” every damn day, then accuse others of the very shit that YOU pull !! Do you really play us all for idiots?? You’re just a mean, nasty, angry old man who gets off on attacking anyone who objects to your OWN crap!! I totally understand how you have no life, no friends, not even in your church
…that’s why you PREACH your BS here! You’re just really pissed at ME because i’ve DARED to call you out for your BS! STFU, HENRY!!

          • TS

….says the Resident NUTBAG. Here’s a suggestion: if VGK fans want to hear a daily sermon, we’ll actually go to church to hear a REAL pastor’s words,NOT the crap from a FAUX GOD!! None of us asked for this, especially your political HATE- MONGERING
No one WANTS to be continually blasted with your HENRY RAGE. You’re an unwanted ilk here. Your BS won’t you here any longer. Find your Q site, and blast away on THAT site, NOT here. What about HOCKEY is confusing you?? Pucks, sticks, goals…you know..
HOCKEY!! MY Freedom.of Speech says so!!

    • JB

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, etc…….. you must really have a sad lonely life!

      • TS

Jb, I’m about to blow a gasket over this fool. Again. He’s a HENRY of TRUMPIAN proportions. Is it possible to hate someone you’ve never met?? Yes. The answer is YES.

        • Richie-Rich

Drop the hatred. It’s not a good look. Don’t engage, skip past his posts. Democrats used to at least tolerate one another and look for common ground. I do agree that his posts are meant to be divisive and cause agitation. While I am voting for Trump, my character is still rooted in good values. I was raised to treat others the way I would like to be treated, even in disagreement. Unfortunately, the lies being spewed by both sides are fanning the flames of hatred and division. At least we all have the commonality of hockey and the Golden Knights.

          • TS

Rr, please explain this to THQ! The guy is, and always has been, an angry, hate- filled sorry excuse for a decent human being
. He prides himself on being the DISRUPTER on this site. Stop HIM, and the entire nasty business STOPS. He doesn’t bother fellow Repubs, as others continually let him attack Dems. But there are at least 50% of us that he intentionally targets with his political attacks. The religious BS is annoying. The political attacks cross the lines of DECENCY. See, I ALSO am politically- minded, but, unlike THQ, I don’t shove MY beliefs down your throat, crucifying anyone who thinks differently.

          • TS

Rr, ” drop the hatred”? Tell that to THQ, who accuses others of the most hate- filled, vile things..easy for you to say, since you’re of his “ilk”.if he constantly blasted YOUR politics on this site, would you be so reasonable?? Funny how you chastise ME, when THQ has been attacking for YEARS…where has your voice been all this time??

  7. Pistol Pete

Oilers looked very good in game 1 including Skinner. If he can keep it up one has to like their chances in this series. IMO both teams have taken a page out of Vegas’ book: roll four lines, play to a five man defensive structure tending to the details. Was wondering when more GM’s would catch onto the importance of defending. Like Gretzky says “defending and goaltending wins Cups”. A coaching change has made a world of difference in Edmonton plus Paul Coffey is the D coach.

    • Pistol Pete

I see Coffey is the assistant coach. I thought one of the TNT commentators called him the D coach. He might as well be, being in the top three D’s of all time. Second to Bourque in points but over a point a game (Bourque was not). Logically he could help the head coach orchestrate the Oilers’ five man D structure. That is what will win them a Cup if they can pull it off.

  8. RR….and speaking of hockey…the more I watch of these playoffs it doesnt lessen but further increases my rock solid belief that VGK could be there…should be there defending and advancing…sigh!!!

  9. Richie-Rich

larry, Florida looks very intimidating out there this year. They’re playing 200ft hockey. The Rangers were lucky to win that game last night. Dallas has a very good defense.

Right now, based on what I am seeing, it will be Dallas vs Florida in the Cup Final. But, that could change with just 1 mistake or a lucky bounce.

If Stone was healthy and Hertl had more time to heal and gel with the team, I would agree with you. The VGK wasn’t quite right throughout the year with all the injuries, Stone back on LTIR. Losing Reilly Smith may also have been a contributing factor as no one really was able to fill his spot and function on the roster. Then, add in the numerous injuries to both goaltenders during this season!

It’s a credit to the VGK and their Coach that they pushed Dallas to 7 games. Sad that they could not leverage off of the 2-0 quick start in round 1.

  10. RR…while luck is often the residue of design…fortuitous bounces that favor the opposition…pucks bouncing there rather than here…pucks that miss by inches…pucks that seem to have a mind of its own…that was the razor thin margin that helped to send us to the sidelines…not to mention the shortened season…which any team will gladly accept lol…the injuries…the lack of chemistry caused by them…which i understand can be construed as excuses…it was bad enough Stone and Hertl were nowhere near playoff game shape…but not having Karlsson anywhere close to his normal self was a huge detriment…i know Cassidy likes to tinker with lines even within a game or period..and has had success doing so…but in that wonderful tool known as hindsight…perhaps it would have been better to try and forge chemistry with what he had rather than trying to recreate the wheel.
