How VGK Can Match Up With Each Of Five Different Teams In The First Round

(Photo Credit: SinBin.vegas Photographer Brandon Andreasen)

The Golden Knights have just two games left in the regular season. They are locked into at least 2nd place in the Pacific Division meaning the first round will begin at T-Mobile Arena. But, with less than a week left in the NHL season, there are still five possible opponents for the Golden Knights in the first round.

There are four teams the Golden Knights cannot play next week when the postseason gets underway. They are the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, and Edmonton Oilers. Everyone else still in the mix is a possibility. So, here’s what it takes for VGK to see each team and how I see each matchup for Vegas.

Remaining Schedules

VGK: vs SEA, at SEA
EDM: at COL, vs SJS
LAK: vs VAN, at ANA
SEA: at ARI, at VGK, vs VGK
CGY: vs NSH, vs SJS
COL: vs EDM, vs WPG, at NSH
WPG: vs SJS, at MIN, at COL
NSH: at CGY, vs MIN, vs COL

Winnipeg Jets
4 Points – VGK wins/COL loses
3 Points – VGK wins/EDM loses
3 Points – WPG wins/CGY loses
3 Points – WPG wins/NSH loses

The Golden Knights must hold off both Colorado and Edmonton. The simplest way for Vegas to do this is to win both games. If VGK drop one point, they must have Colorado lose a game in regulation (or two in OT), and Edmonton must lose a game in any fashion.

Winnipeg must gain three points in their final three games to clinch the second wild card. If they gain only two points, the winner of NSH at CGY cannot win their other remaining game(s).

Matchup: The Golden Knights handled the Jets in the regular season, beating them all three times including a 5-2 win at T-Mobile Arena in the first meeting. What makes this matchup look good for Vegas is Winnipeg’s suspect defense. They struggle to lock down the neutral zone which consistently allows opponents odd-man rushes. Vegas scored 13 times in three games against the Jets and we know when VGK score more than three, they are nearly impossible to beat. The only concern comes in goal for the Jets. Connor Hellebuyck is good, real good. He played just two of the games against Vegas. The Golden Knights touched him up for fice in one game, but he was tremendous in the other allowing just one in regulation on 48 Vegas shots.

Calgary Flames
4 Points – VGK wins/COL loses
3 Points – VGK wins/EDM loses
8 Points – CGY wins/WPG loses
5 Points – WPG wins/NSH loses

The Golden Knights must hold off both Colorado and Edmonton. The simplest way for Vegas to do this is to win both games. If VGK drop one point, they must have Colorado lose a game in regulation (or two in OT), and Edmonton must lose a game in any fashion.

The Flames would need a lot of help from Winnipeg to get into the playoffs. Out of 10 remaining available points between the two teams, Calgary needs eight of them to go their way. That means the Flames must win both of their games (which would clinch their spot ahead of Nashville) and have the Jets drop either two of their final three in regulation or lose all three with one in regulation.

Matchup: The Flames have been a mess all season, and even if they do get in it will be much more so due to the help of the Jets than anything they do themselves. So, the matchup should be fairly straightforward if they keep playing as they have all season. But, the Flames are a deep team if clicking on all cylinders. They play a style of game that will make scoring goals difficult on the Golden Knights and their coach has a track record of success in the playoffs. Still have to like VGK in this series because the chances of the Flames suddenly figuring it all out at the exact perfect moment are very low, but if they do, look out.

Nashville Predators
4 Points – VGK wins/COL loses
3 Points – VGK wins/EDM loses
10 Points – NSH wins/WPG loses
7 Points – NSH wins/CGY loses

The Golden Knights must hold off both Colorado and Edmonton. The simplest way for Vegas to do this is to win both games. If VGK drop one point, they must have Colorado lose a game in regulation (or two in OT), and Edmonton must lose a game in any fashion.

The Predators literally need every single game on the schedule to go their way. They must win all three of their games, then have Winnipeg lose both of their other games. To hold off Calgary, they’d just have to make sure they win the game against the Flames in regulation, or win both of their others in regulation.

Matchup: A potential matchup with the Predators looks really good for the Golden Knights. Nashville sold at the deadline which significantly hurt their depth both at forward and on defense, and they’re experiencing a ton of injuries. The Golden Knights are better in every area except in goal, but the discrepancies everywhere else should be enough to make sure Juuse Saros doesn’t win the series on his own.

Seattle Kraken
8 Points – COL wins/VGK loses
5 Points – LAK wins/SEA loses
3 Points – VGK wins/EDM loses
OR
7 Points – SEA wins/LAK loses
7 Points – EDM wins/VGK loses

Vegas vs Seattle could happen as either the 2v7 matchup or as the 2v3 Pacific Division matchup. If the Golden Knights win the division (by earning a combination of three points between VGK wins and EDM losses), Colorado must pass Vegas (by earning a combination of eight points between VGK wins and EDM losses), and Seattle must not pass Los Angeles by the Kings earning five points through a combination of LAK wins and SEA losses.

Or the Golden Knights could fall to 2nd in the Pacific by having Edmonton earn seven points between VGK losses and EDM wins, while Seattle pass Los Angeles by either winning out or having Los Angeles drop the same amount of points as the Kraken do.

Matchup: A battle of the two expansion teams would make for some great storylines, and it would come down to which team can play the games using their style longer. Vegas will want to wear down the Seattle defense by living in the offensive zone and clogging the NZ, while the Kraken will try to hem Vegas in with a tenacious forecheck. The Golden Knights have succumbed to strong forechecks before, but typically it doesn’t last for much more than a period or two. I’d expect both teams in win games, but the Golden Knights to eventually come out on top.

Los Angeles Kings
8 Points – COL wins/VGK loses
7 Points – SEA wins/LAK loses
3 Points – VGK wins/EDM loses
OR
7 Points – EDM wins/VGK loses
7 Points – LAK wins/SEA loses

Like Seattle, there are two ways the Kings and Golden Knights could matchup in the first round. It takes a lot for either to happen, but they are both definitely possible. For the 2v7 matchup to happen, the Golden Knights must finish below Colorado, but above Edmonton. Then Seattle would have to pass Los Angeles. Otherwise, Edmonton could pass Vegas for 1st and then the Kings would have to hold off the Kraken for 3rd.

Matchup: This is the toughest one to predict as the games between these two teams have been tight (except for the most recent one) and the rosters will have changed dramatically for the playoffs than what met each other in the regular season. The Golden Knights will have to consistently solve the Kings’ 1-3-1 neutral zone trap to generate offense. There have been times they’ve done it with ease and there have also been periods where it has been a slog. The forward depth is similar with VGK having a better defense, but the better goalies likely reside in LA. Very likely could be a seven-game series with the winner decided by a mistake.

Last Chance To Beat Up On A Tired Opponent

I can’t see how anybody can really disagree much with Ken’s assessment of the five potential matchups in the first round.

I think the most favourable matchup has to be Seattle. I think they can beat Seattle without Mark Stone, or Zach Whitecloud.

  2. Tyler Durden

Stupid Ken treating the last win vs. the Kings like it was their Stanley Cup. The Kings trashed the Knights even worse in January.

  3. Sorvino

Still hoping for this lineup in the playoffs.

    Dorofeyev—Eichel-Stone
    Smith—Karlsson—Marchessault
    Barbashev—Stephenson—Kessel
    Carrier—Roy—Kolesar

    Martinez—Pietrangelo
    Theodore—McNabb
    Hague—Whitecloud

    Blueger
    Howden
    Cotter
    Hutton

  4. Jailbird

It’s going to be the Kraken if we win the west or Kings if we don’t win the west.

    • Rashaad

      Kraken can catch the Kings

    • Blitz

It is definitely NOT the Kraken if we win the west. The only way we play the Kraken is if they overtake LA for 3rd in the pacific and we DON’T win the pacific. Also there is a chance the AVS can still overtake VGK and win the West and VGK still wins the Pacific. At this point we would get the top wildcard opponent. The winner of the west will get either WPG, CGY, or NSH. The runner up div winner will get Kraken or possibly the Kings if SEA can over take them. Clear as mud? 🙂

  5. Arnold Rothstein

“Eichel, Theodore and Whitecloud all won’t play tomorrow for Vegas.”

odds are slim on the good guys for winning this one with three key players out of line up. Expect Pachal or Korczak to draw in. My preference is the former.

    Expect Broissant in the nets.

  6. Tim

As Al Davis once said ( Just Win Baby ). Take care of Seattle tomorrow one game at a time.

  7. Rob S.

Unicorns and rainbows are nice, but you people are on drugs if you think Mark Stone is going to have a positive impact in the playoffs. Do none of you remember him gliding around the ice last year after being hurried back from surgery unable to reach, to stretch, to use his stick, and to bat the puck in the net from right in front? Moreover, if he gets hurt being rushed back (two back surgeries in nine months? Really?) and is unable to ever play again, how is that good for the franchise? Let him heal and be ready to go next year.

I don’t think this is the year, but Go Knights Go!

    • TS

Rob, my feeling, too. I know Stone would love to contribute to the playoffs , but surely his doctors will know if and when his back is ready for him to return . Can’t imagine he’s going to play anytime soon

      • Pistol Pete

Don’t really think the doctors would allow him to even practice if being cleared to play is not on the horizon. I attended the practice and he was basically doing it all except contact.

        • TS

Pp, really glad he’s skating again! Hope he’s back in the game for playoffs! Fingers crossed….

  8. Pistol Pete

Flames are out. Winnepeg and Nashville each have to play MIN and COL. For Preds to make the playoffs they have to win both and Jets lose both. Looks like the Jets are in.

    • Pistol Pete

One OTL and Jets clinch with RW tiebreaker even if Preds win. Almost impossible for Preds playing MIN and COL even though Jets have to as well!

  9. Pistol Pete

Now if Vegas can beat SEA at home and EDM loses to COL at COL the division is ours. To clinch the conference seed we have to beat SEA in the season finale.

  10. Pistol Pete

Interesting WC race in the East. Penguins get to 94 and earn a berth with wins over CHI and CBJ (nearly certain one would think). Panthers get to 94 and earn a berth with win over Canes. Islanders screwed themselsves by losing 5-2 to Caps on Monday and can now only reach 93 with a win over MTL and can only earn a berth with a loss by FLA or PIT (their best shot is probably FLA losing to CAR although who knows PIT could lose to either CHI or CBJ: stranger things have happened!).

    • VGK fan

      PP,

I hope you are correct about the Pens but this season they have been so up and down who knows.

    Jesus Saves
    Jesus Saves
    Jesus Saves.

I remember when I was down and out, living on the streets of LA. I still had one goalie pad left, I used to rest my tired head on it and stow it away in a secret place away from the elements. Without not a single dime in my pocket, I searched for solace and meaning. Then I would walk by the 912 Hill STreet, LA, the old United Artists Theater. Converted into University Cathedral, for more than a decade. Now it is the ACE hotel. I would walk by that building, look up and see the red sign. JESUS SAVES, lit 24/7. A glimmer of hope would enter my being. Then one day the protests began. A group on one side chanting:

    JESUS SAVES
    JESUS SAVES
    JESUS SAVES.

Carrying those iconic black lettering on white background with the same words. The signed moving up and down.

Then on other side of the street. Evil reigned with chants of

and ESPO SCORES ON THE REBOUND
    ESPOSITO SCORES ON THE REBOUND

It was a never ending struggle, with no seeming end in sight.

A pastor of church took me in and consoled me. That was beginning of turn around of my life. It was a long struggle. But the demons are long gone.

    True story.

    sez me.

  12. Jailbird

It’s all in OUR hands. Win 2 games and we win it all in West. Can’t ask anymore than that.

  13. Tim

A lot of good posts minus concerning Mark Stone. He’s missed half the season but I think skating is encouraging. I don’t believe management or Cassidy will play him if he’s not ready to contribute. Whitecloud’s injury looks bad I don’t see him coming back and Theadore none of us know his status but the 17th is right around the corner and if he’s not skating yet I’d say he’s probably out too. With 3 good players out and shakey goaltending it’s going to be an uphill climb. One step at a time beating Seattle tonight is the first order of business.

    • Sorvino

Tim, from everything I have heard, Zach!Whitecloud’s injury is not long-term. Could be ready for game one of the first round.

The Bible is, without question, the most seminal text of western civilization. It was banned from schools in 1963 by the left.

A truce, perhaps, not to promote ideology

The Left broke that truce. It now pushes its own ideology broadly and without remorse.

    Let us not forget it

  16. Satan

This is Satan. Some of you are going to be sorry that I am still here. The very reasonable terms for my extinction from this site unfortunately were not met.

Satanism advocates practicing a modified form of the Golden Rule. Our interpretation of this rule is: “Do unto others as they do unto you”; because if you “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” and they, in turn, treat you badly, it goes against human nature to continue to treat them with consideration. You should do unto others as you would have them do unto you, but if your courtesy is not returned, they should be treated with the wrath they deserve.

The person who takes every opportunity to “pick on” others is often mistakenly called “sadistic”. In reality, this person is a misdirected masochist who is working towards his own destruction. The reason a person viciously strikes out against you is because they are afraid of you or what you represent, or are resentful of your happiness. They are weak, insecure, and on extremely shaky ground when you throw your curse, and they make ideal human sacrifices.

When a Satanist commits a wrong, he realizes that is it natural to make a mistake―and if he is truly sorry about what he has done, he will learn from it and take care not to do the same thing again. If he is not honestly sorry about what he has done, and knows he will do the same thing over and over, he has no business confessing and asking forgiveness in the first place.

There was acid being poured on my face. Everything and everywhere over my body seemed to burn. I could feel my skin getting charred. I could feel the acidic air enter my nostrils – dusty, dirty, stinking air. I could barely breathe.

A sharp bout of electricity seemed to gallop from my neck to my head. I could barely move my head to that side of the neck. It was sore. It hurt badly. I was sure there was a fracture. A major one.

Another bottle of acid was being poured on me. It burnt with the same ferocity. The air was stinking. I couldn’t move my body.

I tried to open my eyes. The place was a wreckage. A dilapidated wreckage.

However, it looked familiar. There were stacks of cartons towards the north west corner of the room. I had seen some of those cartons earlier. I had definitely been here before.

And then, in an instant, I realized that water was being poured on me. Not acid. Thank God!

I couldn’t move my hands. They were sore. They were tied behind me. I wanted to drink the water. I couldn’t.

I was starving. I was thirsty. I needed water. I needed food. I needed clean air. I needed some light.

I looked around. There were people everywhere. There were tyres and ropes everywhere. The last time I was there, the place looked so different.

I wondered what time of the day it was. Or what time of the night. Or how many days had been here for. I had no recollection.

“How are you feeling, Mr. Political Guy?”

His tone didn’t seem different. There was the same tinge of warmth and encouragement. He even wore the same formal outfit the last time I saw him in. He sat on a wooden table ahead of me. Flanking him were his key associates most of whom I had trusted at some point in time.

My phone started ringing. I didn’t realize that it was in his hand. He looked at the number and smiled. He held it up for me.

He, walked up a few paces and brought the phone to me. I saw the number. It was a pre-paid unknown number. I recognized it immediately.

He took the call and put the phone on speaker. I wanted to scream. But couldn’t. My mouth was stuffed with something. I couldn’t even groan.

    “The sun is setting.”

There was no reaction from my side. I was being asked to run to safety. He was instructing me to run to any place other than where I was. I knew the sun had set long while ago.

He started calling my name out. Not once. But again and again.

    There was no reaction.

He started to scream, “Are you okay? Just get away. They have found out about you.”

I tried to groan one final time before that. I couldn’t. I didn’t have any energy. I was losing the will to. I hoped he would locate me somehow.

The call was disconnected. He took out the SIM card and broke it. A woman emerged from the cabin behind him. She was carrying a set of files for him. Eleven files to be precise.

She looked at me from a distance. I knew her. She thought I would be surprised to see her. I wasn’t.

She smiled at me the same way. The same charming, enthusiastic, caring and warm smile. No change. She even asked me how I was feeling. She offered me a glass of water.

I couldn’t drink it. I wanted to but I couldn’t with the cloth stuffed in my mouth.

I looked closely at one of his men standing at the extreme right corner. He had a hammer in his left hand. Maybe the same hammer was used to hit me.

“Your stupid bitch was going to the cops. Had she kept quiet, I too would have kept quiet. Had you kept quiet, I too would have kept quiet.”

A Scottish trainer had once told me that everything in management consulting was in lots of three. Three key points. Three key slides. Three key stakeholders. Three key findings. Three main colors. Three main fonts. Three key skills. Three main industries.

There were three women who had played a pivotal role in my life over the last few years.

    Two Indian, one Thai.

One loyal, one a traitor and I am not sure of the third one till date.

One who helped me rise, one who resurrected me and one who proved fatal for me.

Two who loved me, most likely.

    Two who used me.

The three angels of Satan had shown me three different faces. It looked like I would be punished at least three times that night.

On Saturday night, I would see men lusting after half-naked girls dancing at the carnival, and on Sunday morning when I was playing organ for tent-show evangelists at the other end of the carnival lot, I would see these same men sitting in the pews with their wives and children, asking God to forgive them and purge them of carnal desires. And the next Saturday they’d be back at the carnival or some other place of indulgence. I knew then that the Christian church thrives on hypocrisy, and that man’s carnal nature will out no matter how much it is purged or scoured by any white-light religion.

Some religions actually go so far as to label anyone who belongs to a religious sect other than their own a heretic, even though the overall doctrines and impressions of godliness are nearly the same. For example: The Catholics believe the Protestants are doomed to Hell simply because they do not belong to the Catholic Church. In the same way, many splinter groups of the Christian faith, such as the evangelical or revivalist churches, believe the Catholics worship graven images. (Christ is depicted in the image that is most physiologically akin to the individual worshipping him, and yet the Christians criticize “heathens” for the worship of graven images.) And the Jews have always been given the Devil’s name.

The other exception to the rule regards dealings with masochists. A masochist derives pleasure from being hurt; so denying the masochist his pleasure through-pain hurts him just as much as actual physical pain hurts the non masochist. The story of the truly cruel sadist illustrates this point: The masochist says to the sadist, “beat me.” To which the merciless sadist replies, “NO!” If a person wants to be hurt and enjoys suffering, then there is no reason not to indulge him in his
    wont.

Satanism has been frequently misrepresented as “devil worship”, when in fact it constitutes a clear rejection of all forms of worship as a desirable component of the personality.

If she had lived, I know she would be ashamed of me. I’m trying to change that.
My mother adored her morning coffee. I imagine her in my espresso shop, quiet, unimposing, lifting her drink and winking at me the way she did when I was a little kid in Oregon. A few months back I started the place with her in mind. She would love the mahogany counters, the polished brass rails and gleaming Italian machinery, the rich aroma.
Black’s—that’s what I call my shop, in honor of the family name. Mom was always busy, they tell me. A dutiful housewife with a set jaw and silky, raven hair twisted back in a bun. She bore secrets no one should have to carry alone, and when at last she did seek support, she found only hostility and greed and a cup of conspiracy that spilled over into the lives of her family.
Dianne Lewis Black. Despite her weariness, her eyes sparkled. That much I remember and hold on to.
She’d still be with us if not for Uncle Wyatt’s mistake, and I still hate the carelessness that stole her life away. I was six when she died. I watched her fall, a stone’s throw away. For two decades, that one moment held me in its grip. I wallowed in its rage through my young adult years, courting violence and a nasty drug habit. I tattooed my cynicism onto my forearms.

It was almost three in the morning when she’d called, so I was outside her apartment house in fifteen minutes. I didn’t like the doorman eyeballing me more than once, but I didn’t see a way around it either. If he thought it was unusual for someone to be calling at that hour, he didn’t show it . . . just rang up and got the okay for me to enter the elevator.

She must have been right at the peephole–the door opened even as I raised my knuckles to rap. The rose lighting was back on. Otherwise, the place was shrouded. “Go sit down,” she told me, standing aside.

I gave up trying to solve the mystery of her three chairs and just took the middle one, letting her play any way she wanted.

She looked ghostly, floating across the room toward me. Barefoot, in a gauzy white robe that wrapped her body–a frame, not a cover. She took the nearest open chair, reached over, and pulled mine around so we were facing each other.

    “I believe you,” she said.

    “Which means . . . ?”

“I believe you wouldn’t . . . do what you said. I believe you . . . Oh, never mind. Look, here it is, okay? She . . . asked around. Like you said. I don’t know about this ‘theory’ of yours, but you’re right about one thing–they have the men who did that drive-by.”

    “Have them?”

“Found them, I should have said. They’re dead. And one of the people killed in the crowd–you were right about that too. The police think it was murder. I mean, deliberate murder. The rest was only for . . . what do you call it? Camouflage? I don’t know. But the cops say it was business. Professional business. They think they know who gave the order. That’s what you want, right?”

    “That’s what I want.”

“Well, I have it,” she said.

“But you want to play with it first? Or you want me to place a fucking bid? What?”

“Why are you so . . . hostile?” she asked softly. “I’ve been nice to you. It was fun . . . flirting, right? I know you liked it.”

I have done the best I can to help out here. This will be my very last post. I can’t keep retaliating to every the hockey god post. I was hoping that acting like a petulant child right back at someone who acts like a petulant child, could help them change. What I have proven is how selfish and immature the hockey god is. He knows that everybody hates his posts and don’t even reply to him. Yeah, he keeps posting politics in religious crap. For those of you who thought the hockey God was the same person as Satan, that was incorrect. Hockey god, vegas fan in, Arnold Rothstein, and more are the same person.

I would say that every single thing the hockey God accuses someone else of doing he is actually doing himself. He has multiple handles on this website, but accuses other people. He accuses people of saying hateful stuff when he is actually saying hateful stuff. TS is a very kind woman which can easily be seen by all of her posts. What kind of an animal, loser would say the terrible things that you said to her. You are not only a horrible person, but obviously a lonely loser, the type of person I would normally feel sorry for, but not in this circumstance.

      Satan, your supportive words
have been welcome! I’ve been battered with insults for awhile now, so it feels good to hear support from someone! Your attempts to STIFLE EDITH were admirable and quite ingenious, and I APPLAUD your efforts. I am grateful to you for both recognizing my own DECENCY, and trying to inspire POSITIVE CHANGE on Sinbin. I have newfound respect for you! THANKS FOR TRYING!!
