A lot was expected of Mitch Marner in his first season in the desert, and he’s lived up to most of it to this point. It’s the unexpected that often defines seasons and sometimes careers, and Marner has delivered something not many, if any, saw coming when he first pulled on a Golden Knights uniform.
Mitch Marner has lined up as a center in 35 of his first 76 games in Las Vegas, including all of the last seven. He has played with seven different combinations of wingers, with the most common being Reilly Smith and Pavel Dorofeyev, and most recently with Ivan Barbashev and Mark Stone.
Even through the coaching change, Marner has remained in the middle, and it doesn’t appear like that’s going to change any time soon.
When we lost Karlsson, we got thin at center and we decided to try Mitch at center. Most real good hockey players have played center as young guys, but he never played center in Toronto. I don’t think he did in London (OHL). So we tried him at center and he’s been fantastic, and we want to keep him there. –George McPhee on NHL Wraparound Podcast
Marner’s skill set obviously fits nicely as a center. He’s defensively responsible, likes to carry the puck high in the zone near the blue line, and has excellent vision, allowing him to find wingers anywhere on the ice. That’s not to say he’s a perfect fit, though, as he’s limited as a forechecker, physically on the weaker side for NHL players, and has not had much success in the faceoff circle.
He’s going to be moved around. He’s too good a player to be locked into one line all the time. I’ll move some people into different positions depending on what’s going on, depending on the momentum of games. I’ve kind of explained that to Mitch already, and obviously players will never turn down ice time. -John Tortorella
The results have continued to roll individually for Marner, and recently, the team results have improved, so he’s understandably content.
I’m pretty comfortable playing all three positions. I’ve done them all three this year, so, yeah, whatever (Tortorella) feels best with throwing me out there on. I’m always good with it. Just trying to be smart with my shift. -Marner
Marner’s ability to play center has really filled a massive void for the Golden Knights. Of course, Jack Eichel remains the team’s first choice, but with Tomas Hertl struggling to generate offense recently and both Brett Howden and Colton Sissons thriving on the wing, Marner’s presence in the middle has stabilized not only the top-six but the entire forward group.
It isn’t very often when you can convert a winger to a center, that rarely happens in this league. He’s so clever and so intelligent defensively, stripping pucks, getting in the way of things. He’s probably been our most consistent player. He’s a number two center in the NHL right now. -McPhee
Marner has posted 18 points in his last 16 games, highlighted by the hat trick and five-point game at home against Calgary. He’s up to 77 points on the season and has posted an excellent +17 rating, the second-best mark on the team.
The playoffs will be an even tougher test for Marner as a matchup centerman, but so far, he’s handled every challenge, giving plenty of reason for optimism.

Emmanuel
He’s listed as 6’0 180.
He’s gonna line up against those goliath sized C’s in the playoffs?
I think the issue is they have 1 good LW, 3 good RW’s & 2 good C’s, so theyre trying to figure out how to feed those 3 RW’s while also having 3 scoring lines.
Pistol Pete
Not sure who your one good LW is. Barbashev I assume. I add Howden to that list. Is not a big points getter however he played with Stephenson and Stone on the Cup team and was just fine. R. Smith is another LW. He has been a really good LW in his prime but he’s older now and all the more streaky. Excellent chance we see Trevor Connelly 2026-27. He’s a LW.
Emmanuel
Granted LW is thin league wide but “fine” is not “good”.
Smith has tied last seasons goal total but his defense & assist totals have cratered, that’s a BIG red flag for a player his age as defense (-11) & passing were his strengths.
Howden has been dining out on his 22-5-5-10 Cup “performance”.
Pistol Pete
Howden is down from his 2024-25 best 40 pts in 80 games which was as a significant uptick over the year before which was the year after the Cup. He’s still just 28. Hopefully his best years are ahead of him. Decent PK’er right? Good forechecker. Fast skater big body.

Howdy has a good motor
Emmanuel
Prime years are 24-28 for NHL’ers.
Pistol Pete
I’m ok with Mitch’s forechecking in fact imo he’s very good. He’s technique for it is not big hitting, rather he ties you with body positioning and the use of his stick. However he does it he’s very good at gaining possession of the puck from behind the goal line.
Larry
PP I agree 100 percent with that, he’s definitely grown on me in that capacity and through the first year with the team.
JB
I don’t know why anyone would ever question Howie. He plays wherever they ask him and is nonstop go all the time. He may not be a top goal scorer but he is good in other ways. Love the guy!
DruBlu
Yeah, Howds is no-nonsense, always willing and able, tough, talented, and not mistake-prone. All good when Brettsky is on the ice.
And Mitch is so clever with his stick, it makes up for shortcomings in body size re forechecking. He’s opening up here. And in Vegas, you don’t have to have a 100-point season to be measured as a successful Mitch Marner.

Well said Jb
Emmanuel
Youre all describing an NHL 4th liner…….
He has the stats & analytics of a 4th liner.
This is not debatable.
Emmanuel
Career Lifetime:
484 games – 73 goals – 89 assists – 162 point (-18)
Per 82 games roughly 12G-15A!!!
13:33 avg TOI (this is VERY telling).
Corsi For 45.5 (this is BAD) Corsi For Relative (-7.6)
Fenwick 43.4 (this is VERY BAD) relative Fenwick (-7.8)
I couldnt find any stats for having a “good motor” or “being willing & able” or “being non stop go”.
Pistol Pete
4th liners don’t very often have a 23 goal season and half a point a game. That was 2025-25 this year he has 11 goals. Our
4th liners do not historically even get 11 goals. Nic Roy (15, 14, 13, 15) was our highest scoring 4th line forward though he played up too. The Cup year Carrier had 16 the only time he went over 10. With Howden one has to get past the modest points production and the stats. Ask the coaches and they’ll say he’s valuable on the roster. PK’er who can score clutch goals good forechecker. Have to like him being up
on the rush to bury that rebound of Eichel’s against the Oilers.
SHS
Howie has missed 24 games to injury this season. He was starting to roll just before he went down, and has been very good during our streak. He is undeniably one of our fastest skaters, which will be greatly important down the stretch. I like the guy.
Pistol Pete
Kings and Sharks are breathing down our neck. Both won today. We have to win four of five to clinch against either unless they lose a game.
JB
Got to keep winning. Certainly can’t fall down against the lowly Canucks tonight!
Larry
Interestingly and surprisingly enough, there is a team with a less than stellar playoff history ,that may be potentially setting up for a run similar to what the Blues did in 2019, if they in fact can even make the playoffs and that is Winnipeg, who were dead and buried most of the season but are now making a frantic push. VGK will have a say in the matter as the Jets are here for Game #81.
